Repeated Kernel Panics on MBP17" after upgrading from SL (without anything else) to LION or MAVERICKS .

All  tentatives to upgrade from SL to LION or MAVERICKS on my MBP17" causes a KERNEL panic.
SL was reinstalled on several HDD and SSD WITHOUT anything else.
Any update to LiON or MAVERICKS will result in an immediate Kernel Panic.
Any clue?
Thanks

Thanks for your quick answer.
I am the only administrator of my personnal MAC (only one account)
I can't even start in safe mode, there is no firevault nor firmware password , nor RAID volume.
Therefore I had to format the disk and reinstall SL that works like a charm. No way to access the console ….
Any attempt to install LION or MAVERICKS results in a KERNEL PANIC during installation ...
There is no apps installed, no peripheral attached,
By chance I managed somehow to print a log report (see below)

    Hi,
I am upgrading a Design premium to elearning suite. The design premium has 2 years maintenance, but Adobehas told me that if I upgrade from design to anything else the maintenance is lost and I have to buy more.
    If this right  ?

  • Kernel panic when trying to upgrade from OS X 10.7.5

Running an intel imac with os x 10.7.5, I tried upgrading to mavericks. After downloading and try to restart, I get a persistent kernel panic. Have used disk utility from recovery HD to repair permissions and repair disk. Still get kernel panic screen on restart. What now?

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

As said, he performed the upgrade and now we can't start the DB, anybody that had the same issue?
We run on AIX 5.3 and from the unix side, nothing changed. After 7.5 we plan on going to 7.6 but that is in the stars I guess...
We posted a high message with SAP and since over 10 hours nobody picked the message up... we are getting kind of desperate... Any pointers are appreciated...
    thanks

    Hello Thomas,
-> If you run the database update using the database update tool, the permissions/ownership will be set correctly for the database software & the permissions/ownership of the database log files will be also changed correctly.
Please check the upgrade log in the /sapdb/data/wrk
-> Please check the ownership of the files in the database RUNDIRECTORY.
For example, if the database owner:group of your database is sdb:sdba, then
    -rw-rw----   1  sdb        sdba  u2026.     knltrace
-> Please update the thread with the output of the following commands :
               sdbregview -l
               xinstinfo SD3
               id sdb
              ls -l <runditectory>
< rundirectory is the database parameter value and by default is /sapdb/data/wrk/SD3 >
            more /etc/opt/sdb
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

  • 24" iMac repeatedly kernel panics when idle

I have recently been struck by repeated kernel panics on my 24" iMac. Until a few days ago, this happened when I woke it from sleep. Running Applejack showed up a corrupt Kensington MouseWorks pref file and removing that seems to have solved that problem. Now, however, I frequently come back to my iMac to find it kernel panicked. In other words, it panics without me doing anything. A recent example from panic.log is copied below. Is there an obvious fix? I have repaired permissions and checked memory. Thanks!

First, if your iMac has any third-party RAM, rather than the original Apple RAM, then I'd suggest that is the likely suspect. If so, that may not necessarily be shown in the results of the Apple Hardware Test. Best test of third party RAM is to remove it and replace with only the original Apple RAM, and see what the results of that are.
I don't know how or if Remy resolved his, but based on your above comment, I'd suggest you try the SMC reset, found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
If that doesn't resolve, I'd also try a PRAM reset.
    To reset the PRAM:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Start up the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination after the startup chord sounds, but before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
If that wouldn't help, then I suppose you'll have to proceed through the links in my above post.

  • Repeated kernel panic (seems related to ipw2200)

Since a few months I have been experiencing repeated kernel panics at seemingly random times (the system boots up fine).
Below is an example of the panic screen that shows up, it seems related to the network driver ipw2200.
What I have done so far:
    - I have set my router not to use N mode (only B and G) since the adapter does not support N, this did not resolve the situation.
    - I have run memtest86+ with no error messages.
    - I have reinstalled the kernel, to no avail
    - I have reinstalled grub, although I don't think that could be the problem, since bootup is fine.
Here is one of the panic screens that appears:
    (II) [KMS] Kernel modesetting enabled
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Any ideas how to resolve or further troubleshoot this?

graysky wrote:Is that driver included with the kernel package?  If so, how about running mainline from the AUR as a test.
I am using the standard linux kernel from the official repositories. The ipw2200 driver is included, but requires the ipw2200-fw firmware.
While creating the package for the mainline kernel, the ipw2200 driver also shows up, doesn't that mean that it is also included in that kernel?
Would it still be useful to test this kernel in that case? I'll try it anyway, I am making the package after booting from a 2011 archlinux CD,
after which I have not yet had a kernel panic occur.
Additional note: turning the wireless network adapter off completely still gives the same kernel panic at seemingly random intervals (from minutes to hours after boot)
Also the computer seems to heat up sometimes, the following message appears: temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled.
The kernel panic also appeared a few times while I was monitoring the temperature, which was at normal levels at those times.
    Any more ideas?

  • Repeat Kernel Panics

My wife's laptop is having repeat Kernel panics while using Safari. I don't have a recent message to display the info, but I've read this may be a memory issue. Other thoughts before I take it in to Apple?

As you mentioned a frequent cause of KP's is RAM related. These are fairly easy to troubleshoot by yourself if you want to. The causes can be:
    • Faulty RAM
    • RAM not seated
    • Incorrect RAM
I'm assuming if you are using the original RAM that came with the computer it's not Incorrect RAM, however if you have upgraded it that's the first thing I'd look at.
You mention this occurs when she is using Safari, Safari is a very stable product however all browsers tend to be RAM hogs, the longer they are left on and the more tabs or windows open the more RAM they use. Run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and you can get a fair idea how RAM and % CPU is being used.
That is where I'd start. In addition here are some very useful articles on trouble shooting Kernel Panics:

  • Kernel panic on startup after Software Update

My mother's iBook G4 is unable to startup due to a kernel panic that began after the last software update.
On boot, the computer goes to the kernel panic (You need to restart your computer) screen after a few seconds of the Apple logo screen. It cannot boot in Safe Mode or Single User mode (it hangs after reporting system uptime.)
It can boot into Target Disk mode.
The iBook updated its software (Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6, Security Update 2009-006, HP Printer Drivers Update 1.1.1 and Safari 4.0.4) yesterday, then restarted and kernel panicked.
This happened to my girlfriend's PowerBook right after an update too, and because she didn't have her system disks, I asked my Mom to send her copy of 10.5 to me from SF to Portland. Now, the same thing has happened while I was in SF, and the system disk is in Portland (meaning I don't have an OS disk.)
Is there some way to fix this? I have full access to the disk on the iBook through a FireWire cable and target disk mode on my MacBook Pro (but disk utility can't check permissions.) Seems that I should be able to fix it somehow. Ideas?

Install the combo update that you can download from the Apple download site at http://www.apple.com/downloads/ . Sometimes the software update function doesn't install the updates correctly, causing just odd behaviors. The combo update has all prior updates from that OS X version included. If possible, it's good to repair permissions before and after the combo update.

  • Intel HD3000 repeated kernel panics

I'm writing some software (an open-source microscope control system) that uses OpenGL, and I'm getting repeated kernel panics whenever I make even a minor mistake. That is, OpenGL is functional, but if I do something slightly wrong then my computer crashes. This makes debugging absurdly painful, as you can probably imagine.
The panic report log (pasted below) clearly implicates the HD3000 driver. My question is, what can I do about this? The program should crash if I do something wrong, absolutely, but it shouldn't take the computer with it. This is ruining my ability to get work done.
I suppose it's remotely possible that the card is at fault, but I was able to play a 3D game without any difficulty so I doubt that.
I'm running OSX 10.7.4 and Software Update says I'm fully up-to-date. Would it be possible to downgrade my graphics card drivers? Perhaps a previous version is more stable.

  • Lost Developer Toolbar after upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2

After upgrading from 4.1 to 4.2.1.00.08, we have lost the Developer Toolbar.
Have others run into this with the upgrade or fresh installation of 4.2.1?
If so, what suggestions are there for fixing, short of reinstallation mentioned in this other thread:
    {message:id=10692572}
Following the guidance there to look at the instance ID and other preference settings, I compared our three instances. The two that are not having the problem are both at 4.2.0.00.27.
Here are the preferences that exist on our other instances but are null on the problem instance:
    APEX_4_1_0_PATCH_12920544
    APEX_4_2_0_PATCH_14777994
    APP_EXPORT_TO_DB_ENABLED
    HPROF_DIRECTORY
    INSTANCE_ID
    MOBILE_DEVELOPMENT_ENABLED
    PRINT_SVR_HOST
    PRINT_SVR_PORT
PRINT_SVR_SCRIPTI have asked our support team to review the upgrade log. Re-installation from scratch is an option.
    Any advice is welcome.

    Thanks, Joel.
You inspired me to take a closer look, and look beyond the upgrade.
After the upgrade, my application passed a superficial checkout. Later, I exported my application and in the export file, the Instance ID was not NULL. I had not noticed any problems with how APEX was working.
The problems of the missing Developer Toolbar, Instance ID = NULL, and a new one, did not occur until I removed my application and tested a clean installation of the workspace and application. This is the sequence of events. The immediate triggering cause is clearly one of the following:
    1. Deinstall application (ID 820) from APEX 4.2.1.00.08 instance, running 11g (11.1.0.7.0).
    2. Remove workspace (PVA_AH9_R12)
    3. (drop the parsing schema, xxpva, and related tablespace)
    4. (create tablespace and schema user, xxpva)
    5. Import workspace (PVA_AH9_R12) from an APEX 4.2.0.00.27 instance.
    6. Import application (ID 820) including supporting objects from an APEX 4.2.0.00.27 instance, running 11g (11.2.0.1.0).
The next day I noticed the Developer Toolbar missing problem, and found that Instance ID is NULL.
Also, after Exporting an application in Database format, I cannot download the file from the Export Repository. When I click the filename link, I get 'Access Denied' instead of the normal download dialog.
Does this suggest anything else I should look into?
Do you think I should post this as a new problem/question with more detail about the sequence of events?

cn=XXX information is missing for the SSO Server (orasso) when going to http://servername:7777/pls/orasso/orasso.home. Is that causing the problem? If so, how can I resolve it?

  • Remote Desktop Connection stop working after upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1

I too could not connect to a W2K3 server with RDC 2.0.1 after upgrading from Mac OS X, 10.5.8 to 10.6/10.6.1. I have another Mac which is on 10.5.8 and connect fine with the same version of RDC 2.0.1 as well as other PC with Terminal Service Clients.
There is no change on the server side. I have uninstalled and reinstalled RDC 2.0.1 several time and it did not resolve the issue. To rule out firewall/network, I tested with another remote desktop application called CoRD (for Mac) on the same laptop running SL 10.6.1 and it connected to the same W2K3 server fine.
One thing that is worth mentioning (in my case), when it does not connect, RDC totally quit (not running anymore. Not minimize, no cannot connect error message, no little dot on the Dock for RDC, nothing) right after I put in the credential in. When looking at the log entries that are related to RDC in the Console application, I see the following
    machine 10.6.1. with RDC 2.0.1 (non-working)

One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
On the 10.5.8 machine with RDC 2.0.1 (working), I see the following entries

    Any help would be appreciated

Doing some more troubleshooting after my post above as I saw a couple of entries referencing Stop Light keep popping up in the log of the Console. I removed Stoplight and Cocoa Gesture (for good meausre) and RDC 2.0.1 started working. I think it is Stop Light which causes RDC stop working, but I don't have to time right now to put Cocoa Gesture back to confirm that. I might if I have the time or post here if you have Stop Light installed as well and removing it resolved the RDC issue for you.

  • ITunes Not Recognizing my iPod Touch after Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

After upgrading from Tiger (10.4.x) to Leopard (10.5.0=>10.5.6), my iPod Touch is no longer recognized by iTunes 8.0.2. The iPod Touch no longer appears in iTunes' "source list" (left side pane in iTunes' GUI).
Immediately prior to that upgrade, my iPod Touch was working great with Tiger (10.4.x). iTunes 8.0.2 recognized it (listed it in sources) and always synchronized with it successfully.''
My iPod Touch is also not shown in the Finder. However, it does show up as recognized in iPhoto.
Any ideas on how to get the iPod recognized again in iTunes under Leopard?

Thanks to a posting by Jim in a different Apple Discussions (forum), my problem is now resolved. Read on for the details.
iPods & Finder. Some other postings incorrectly lead me to believe that the iPod would show up in the "Finder". Jim's posting set me straight on this.
iTunes Not Recognizing iPod Touch. Prior to Jim's posting, I had already read the article that Jim referenced (to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service per article "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747").
Prior to Jim's posting, I had also read other articles in various "Apple Discussions" (forums) that suggested this recognition problem could be resolved by uninstalling/re-installing iTunes 8.0.2. Some implied that you could just re-install iTunes 8.0.2 right over the currently installed one without bothering to uninstall it.
Based on those postings, I "gambled" last night and simply downloaded and re-installed iTunes 8.0.2 (without uninstalling it first). I noticed during the installation that the Apple Mobile Device agent was also re-installed. Well, my gamble paid off! After the installation (and a reboot?), iTunes onces again RECOGNIZED my iPod Touch.
