Repeated Mountain Lion Reinstall

Hello:
I have a Mac Pro 2010, using the latest version of Mountain Lion, and twice in the past week the computer has frozen and required that I initiate a hard reboot.  On each reboot, however, the OSX Recovery Disk Assistant appeared. Thus, I had to reinstall OSX.  Fortunately, I have everything backed up to another external drive so it was relatively painless. If this had happened once, I would have moved on. But since this happened twice in one week, I'm trying to find out some possible causes. Now, I have Tech Tool Pro 7 and other utilties that check file integrity, repair permissions, and hard drive health, among other things. According to these various utilties, the hard drives are good shape. I have installed some software in the past few weeks, but this software has been running smoothly, so I doubt this is the cause.  In any event, I'm interested to hear any suggestions from those of you have experienced or heard about this type of problem.  Thanks

First, thanks, Linc. I went through all your instructions until I realized that, b/c I had gone through the reinstall of OSX I don't have the exact location of when the system became unresponsive and my reboot. So, I've had to estimate. I've tried to cull this down by, as you said, deleting duplicates but also deleting lines that referred to programs or features that I think aren't relevant. For example, there were references to Tech Tool Pro or Bluetooth.  Thus, what I've included begins with my boot time for last Saturday and ends with my approximation of when I began to reinstall OSX.  Aalso, there are no entries under "System Diagnostic Reports. Please let me know if this helps:

how can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, put another hd in, done command-r & sys reinstalled, but it wanted to update & now am stuck. I don't mind paying for mountain lion; it is too far to get to an apple store. but, i only have one mac, so i cannot download with another mac. lots of other apple, but only one mac.

You will need to do a network recovery:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HT4718 will i lose personal files with a mountain lion reinstall??

will i lose personal files with a mountain lion reinstall??

Not unless you go out of your way to erase the disk, first.
However, nothing is foolproof and the probability of something going wrong during the reinstall is inversely proportional to the number of backups you have.

  • ITunes freezes MacBook Pro after Mountain Lion reinstall

A bad sector on my Macbook Pro (synched to my iMac) occurred within days of my first Mountain Lion update. I reinstalled Mountain lion, and used migration assistant with time machine to reinstall everything else.
It was working for 8 hours when I decided to turn on iTunes. What resulted was the bouncing iTunes logo stopped bouncing, and Finder stopped working, until the whole computer seized up. After a hard reboot, I got the same behavior. Each time iTunes freezes, after 10 minutes, you get
"A required iTunes compoenent is not installed." Please reinstall iTunes (-42403).
Can you do this in Mountain Lion? And is this just a symptom of a larger problem?  Disk Utilities permissions doesn't help. And the hard drive is OK.

Did you ever have the WiFI card on your machine replaced ? Have you tried taking it to an Apple Store ?

  • Mountain Lion reinstall

I have purchased Mountain Lion and previous ones all through online and I do not have any copy
How would I reinstall or copy the app for future reformats?
    Thanks

Go to the App Store and click on the "Purchases" tab.
You should see a list of your purchases that will allow you to download your purchases again.

  • Mountain Lion Reinstall problems

I'm having trouble reinstalling my OS I'm running mountain lion and I've just erased my HDD. I've changed out the optical drive for another hard drive and mountain lion will boot into recovery mode but doesn't seem to want to install. Keeps telling me it can't verify something or validate something.
I've tried reformatting the drives, resetting the nvram and retrying it a few times.
    Any suggestions?

OK, then you can use Internet Recovery to get back, at least, the version of OS X that shipped with your MBP.
Hold down the Command, option and R keys whilst booting. It will take some time, depending on the speed of your Internet connection, to boot into Internet recovery mode. I would recommend using a physical Ethernet cable to your router rather than trying this over wifi. Once in the Recovery window you can choose to erase your boot drive using Disk Utility and then install the OS. If your computer shipped with Lion, you'll just have to upgrade from the previously purchased ML from the App Store.
Call back if this doesn't work - you may have one of the early 2011 MBPs that shipped with Snow Leopard.

  • Mountain Lion Reinstall has been stuck here for hours?

I decided to reinstall mountain look because my (mid-2009 MacBook Pro) has been a little sluggish. I erased the hard drive from recovery and started the reinstall. The installer said it would be at least 8 hours so I let it go over night. This morning when I woke up the installer was stuck on "Downloading additional components. Your computer will restart automatically." But the blue install bar is full (all blue) and the time says 14 hours and 36 minutes remaining. The computer itself is not frozen (there is no beach ball) what should I do? Thanks

Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM according to these instructions:

  • Mountain Lion reinstall isssue

The issue I am having is that I wanted to wip my SSD amd reinstall ML I get to the install page and it asks for my login info and it looks like it takes it but that is as far as it goes I have tried to click install over and over and each time is ask for my apple id but I keep going no where. Any jelp would be appreciated

    Replied to this on the thread mentioned above, same issue;
"I have had this problem today as well, I phoned Apple and they said it's a known issue that they don't know how to fix it at the moment. I can't get past the grey start up screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. I can get in to the recovery utility but can't download ML.
I went to a repair centre earlier today and they installed it from a disk they had made themselves and it booted twice after that and then died again.
I've booked in for them to call me tomorrow morning so I'll see what they have to say."

  • TextEdit acting differently since Mountain Lion reinstall

I hope this doesn't get posted twice.  I used to be able to type in textedit and it was all automatically modified like a database.  I would close the document and it would retain anything I had writen without hitting save.  I liked that (I think).  Now I have to hit save after prompting.  Any ideas?

  • What's the difference between choosing "reinstall mountain Lion" and erasing hard drive and booting from base system?

I would like to know what the difference would be with the following two scenarios, both starting from the command + R menu at startup:
    1. Chose the picture of the mountain lion "reinstall osx mountain lion
    2. Erase the main hard drive, and then boot from "OSX base system"
If someone upgraded my macbook to mountain lion, did that upgrade also include a recovery partition and is that what one of these options is?

  • Why don't pages and keynote work since mountain lion was reinstalled?

I just had Mountain Lion reinstalled to fix a problem with reading DVD's. That problem was fixed but now I can't use Pages or Keynote. When I try to open them I get a message saying "files that need iwork are missing" and it says to use the iwork installer to reinstall iwork. So I downloaded and installed iwork 9.2, but pages, numbers and keynote still don't work. Help! I need my documents for work!

Plus when I tried downloading updates to pages and keynote from the Apple support site, I got a message saying they couldn't be installed because they were from an unidentified developer, not approved by Apple. Huh?

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion does not to wake up from sleep

I just upgraded my Mac Book Pro mid 2009 from Lion to Mountain Lion. Everything is ok, but when I try to wake up it from a sleep, white dots fill, only last one remains grey and machine stay forever.
    I really appreciate any suggestions.
    Many thanks!
    Sandro

My suggestion is that you reinstall Mountain Lion:
Reinstalling Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

if theres anyone who can help me downgrade it back to Mountain Lion, id GREATLYYY appreciate it a lot.
    Thanks!

You don't need to downgrade. If it worked in Mountain Lion it will work in Mavericks. Do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • How to uninstall maverick back to mountain lion?

I have instaled maverick but have found that it does not support some programs so wish to revert back to mountin lion.  Is this possible and if it is can you give me a very basic explenation of how to do so.
    Many thanks

Another option too for those (kind of like me) who never did the time machine.
I just restored my computer back to Mountain Lion, and she's working perfect again, as I knew she would. E-mail popping into mailbox instantly as it should and did before the update, printer working fast as it was before update, no more freezing or glitches of any kind thankfully and finally. Here is the link that is through the Apple site to direct you on how to put your system back and get rid of Maverick's, that is assuming that is what you would like to do and also includes link for those wanting to try fixing the issue if that is your preference (most of this info is for those with mountain lion and some with the previousverisoin of OS X lion).
If you want to keep Maverick's here is a good post on the apple discussion board to help you out:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6161
If you just want to totally get rid of it and put back what you had before, this is the short version of how to do so:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
NOTE: This particular link has a lot of info on what to do for different situations, it is a bit lengthy, yet still very helpful.

OS X: About OS X Recovery (also from apple support directly and includes some instructions just the same as previous links above):

Just in case you aren't sure what it will all look like as you are doing things, this is a link to show you a few pics of what you will see  as you as you are going through the process, it can be helpful for those who aren't sure what they are doing or how to do things at all:

This is a way to download the Mountain Lion disk info from the server

I hope this helps someone, it was amazing for me and my system is working perfect again like it was, battery life is way better went from like 3 hours to like 5 (not on full charge by the way, after it sat for a while doing the online update which took a while so that's saying something alone, huge improvement). I plan to wait a while before attempting to reinstall Maverick's, long enough for them to fix the bugs.
