Repeated Request for Account Password

After months of no problems, I am suddenly asked to enter my account password because the POP server has rejected the password in my keychain. Some days I just enter in (the same) password and it logs in just fine.
Other days I am prompted repeatedly for the password until I just cancel. When this happens I restart Mail which sometimes works, or I then have to reboot the computer which sometimes fixes the problem on other occassions.
Or it just mysteriously fixes itself by chance.
Why does this continue to happen? I have not changed my passwords or settings since I began using the software.
Thanks.

Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, you may try removing the password entry from the keychain and letting Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.
Note, however, that Mail often doesn’t correctly report what the problem really is. If Mail can connect to the server but cannot log into your mail account for some reason, it’ll ask for your password regardless of whether that’s really the problem or not. Don’t keep entering the password every time, because that’s not the problem (click Cancel instead, and take the account back online afterwards).
Some ISPs refuse connection attempts if they are too frequent, for example, or limit the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed from the same IP address, or there may be too many messages on the server and Mail times out before the server responds, or there might be a problem with the network, or there might be a problem with the server...
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
What’s the time interval chosen in Mail > Preferences > General > Check for New Mail? If it’s set to Every minute, try changing it to Every 5 minutes.
Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.

  • Repeated requests for hotmail password

My son's new macbook is set up to get hotmail (paid account, POP settings), and it works just fine EXCEPT that mail.app asks for his password every few minutes or so. Does anyone know why, or how to make it stop?

    try these two things:
    1) in mail>preferences>general find out what option you have selected for checking mail, if every one minute, you may want to change to 5 minutes or longer, as the one minute change has been known to cause problems with asking/authenticating passwords.
    2) go to your Keychain Access and find out if you have more than one password created for that email account, if so, delete so that you have only one, hopefully the right one

Every now and then (months apart) msn asks me to fill in my email password on my MBP (Lion) every 2 seconds or so for hours at a time - then it usually stops at some point on it's own - and starts doing it again arbitrarily. Has anyone heard of this madness?  I have a 13" laptop from 2009.

    Hi Lutonpete,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are receiving repeated prompts for different “Local Items” keychain passwords and know how frustrating this situation can be. There is a solution to this issue however. Please use the steps and information in the attached article to resolve this issue.

Something keeps trying to download on my mac and I don't know what it is. It is not in the apple store and just comes out nowhere and request for my password to download something and I don't know what it is. How to make this stop? It pops up every single day.

    Erica,
I can, with 99.99% certainty, tell you that you are absolutely right in not wanting to download or install this "Helper," whatever it is (but we can be equally certain it would not "help" anything).
I cannot comment as to Oglethorpe's recommendation of 'adwaremedic'; I am unfamiliar with it.  His links to the Apple discussion and support pages warrant your time and attention.
It might be really simple -- Trying looking in your Downloads folder, trash anything that you don't know with certainty is something you want to keep, and then Secure Empty your Trash. Then remove the AdBlock extension, LastPass, and Web of Trust extensions to Safari and re-boot. If the issue goes away, still be extraordinarily careful in the future.
Unfortunately, it's probably not going to be that simple to get rid of, in which case I'd then try the line by line editing in HT203987.
I have no further suggestions (other than a complete wipe and re-install...but that's a pain because trying to restore from Time Machine would simply ... restore the Mal).
For the rest of us, please post when you find a solution.
         Best.

    Hello b.krushel,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
Any number of things could cause this issue, so I would recommend this article named iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3999.
    These sections in particular:
    General Troubleshooting
Make sure there are no current issues listed on the System Status that affect iCloud Calendar. The System Status is located on the iCloud Support webpage.
Make sure you have fully enabled iCloud Calendar for the client you are using (for more setup and troubleshooting information on iOS, OS X, Windows and iCloud.com, see the additional details below).
Check to see if the issue you are seeing is covered in iCloud Help. To search iCloud Help, visit help.apple.com/icloud.
Check your settings and preferences as something may not be set up correctly. For example, having incorrect date and time settings can cause issues which are easily resolved by entering the appropriate settings.
Troubleshooting Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion (iCal on OS X Lion)Note: For instructions on setting up iCloud Calendar with Calendar or iCal on your Mac, see iCloud Setup. If you are having trouble with Calendar or iCal on a Mac and you are using iCloud Calendar, try each of these steps, testing after each to see if the issue is resolved:
Make sure you are using OS X Lion v10.7.2 or later. Click here for help verifying the version of OS X you are using.
Make sure your computer is online. Attempt to view www.apple.com and iCloud.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud calendars and events will not update in iCal. Click here for more information about troubleshooting your Internet connection.
Verify that your iCloud member name is entered into the iCloud Preference pane in System Preferences. See iCloud Setup for more information about setting up iCloud on a Mac.
Make sure you enter and update calendar information in the iCloud section of Calendar or iCal. Only calendars and events in the iCloud section of the Calendar or iCal Calendar list will be pushed to iCloud. Both Calendar and iCal for the Mac support the display of and interaction with multiple accounts and datastores, for example, iCloud, On My Mac, Exchange, Google, and so on. This makes it easy to create or modify events or calendars in a section of  Calendar or iCal that may not be updating iCloud. Learn more about moving local calendars to iCloud.
In some cases, you may find that you have data duplicated in both the local On My Mac and the iCloud sections of Calendar or iCal. Learn more about resolving this issue.
You can make the iCloud calendar your default calendar for all new events. In Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion, choose Calendar > Preferences > General, or in OS X Lion, choose iCal > Preferences > Generaland under the Default Calendar heading, select one of the Calendars under the iCloud heading. Close the Preferences window to save this change.
If recent changes simply don't appear, try forcing Calendar or iCal to refresh by selecting Refresh All from theCalendar menu.
Make sure your account was successfully created in Calendar on your Mac (or iCal). After upgrading to iCloud Calendar, you may need to quit and reopen Calendar (or iCal). To confirm your account is configured correctly in iCal:
    Open Calendar (or iCal).
    Open Calendar (or iCal) Preferences.
Click Accounts. You should see an account with your iCloud member name entered.
Turn iCloud Calendars off and back on
    Quit Calendar (or iCal).
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Remove the checkmark in the checkbox next to Calendars.
Close System Preferences and wait about a minute.
Open System Preferences and choose iCloud.
Replace the checkmark next to Calendars.
    Close System Preferences.
Open Calendar (or iCal) and test to see if the issue has been resolved.
Restart your computer. This may sound simple, but it does reinitialize your network and application settings and can frequently resolve issues.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • ICal error "400" the request for account fail!!

iCal on my Macbook keeps on popping up with the following:
The server responded with an error.
The request for account “myemail (at) yahoo.com” failed.
    The server responded with
    “400”
    to operation CalDAVCalendarSplitDualTypeCalendarQueueableOperation.
I don't even have a calendar account with my yahoo account, since I use my gmail and iCloud calendar. I went into system preferences and made certain the "calendars" option was unchecked for my yahoo account in the Internet Accounts page. Nonetheless, iCal pops up with the same error message multiple times within the hour. I'm not sure why iCal is even requesting for my yahoo calendar, since I have never used it in iCal since day one. Any ideas?

Just out of curiosity, did you install FileZilla recently? The install comes with malware called Speedial. You may have noticed that your default search engine in all browsers is set to Yahoo, and furthermore impossible to override via the normal course of action.
Removing Yahoo from local apps is easier than resetting them. All I had to do was delete the (added without my consent) Yahoo account from System Preferences, and the iCal Yahoo calendar disappeared momentarily.
For resetting Safari, look here: Reset Safari Settings/Preferences

  • The request for account "iCloud" failed.  The server responded with "400" to operation CalDAVAddSubscriptionCalendarQueueableOperation

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?  Or even what the problem is?  I am trying to subscribe to a calendar and every time I do, it gives me this response:
The request for account “iCloud” failed.
    The server responded with
    “400”
    to operation CalDAVAddSubscriptionCalendarQueueableOperation
Any help would be fantastic.  This is a course calendar, and I really need it.
    Thank you!

Keep away from iCloud and keep away from iCal. This is the most reliable solution to these 403 issues.
The Mac cannot upload calendars and keeps popping up error messages with an insane frequency.

  • The request for account "iCloud" failed.

    I keep getting this message:
"The request for account “iCloud” failed.
    The server responded with
    “502”
    to operation CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation."
whenever iCal opens. It gives me the option to "Stay Offline" or "Go Online" but even when I click "Go Online" the message just pops up again.
    How can I fix it?!
    Thanks in advance.

    Try this first:
In iCal Preferences…, choose Accounts, then select the account that is giving you trouble. Uncheck the box labeled Enable this account. Wait a few seconds, then re-check the box. This should solve the problem.
