Repeatedly asked what program to oper PDF, Word, Wav, etc. despite defaults being set in tools, box checked

Despite setting defaults for PDF, Word Docs, Wav files and box being checked. I am asked EVERY time; "what program would you like Firefox to use."

Can you post an example link that is publicly accessible?
Sites can cause the download prompt to appear regardless of your settings, using one of two methods:
* Identifying the file as a generic MIME type using the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' header.
* Sending the ''Content-Disposition: attachment'' header.
You can check if that's the case by examining the response headers for the file request in question, using the Web Console (Ctrl+Shift+K).

  • In email, when I click on a "pdf" file, how do i get it to just open instead of being asked what program I want to use?

When I get a "pdf" in an email and I click on the "pdf" button, I am always asked what program I want to use. How do I get the file to just open automatically?

You can specify in Windows what program to use for a given extension, for instance Adobe Acrobat Reader, for files with PDF extension. How you can connect the program and the extension, is described in this article; [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default "Change which programs Windows uses by default"]
In Firefox PDF links get opened automatically with Acrobat reader. When clicking on PDF attachments in Thunderbird, however, you will need to associate the program and the extension as described in the above article.
    Hope it helps!

  • Trying to download a FIrefox and when I click on run it asks what program I want to use to open with so I cant finish install

I've been using FF for years and lately have been having issues with internet access. Worked through the troubleshooting suggestions and got it working, but last night FF couldn't connect to internet after something updated and my Norton anti virus was gone too and I couldn't fix it. The last resort was to delete my ff and download new, so I did. When I clicked on run I got a pop up asking what program I wanted to open it with and of course nothing worked. By then it was 1:30 am so I quit. Today I'm having the same issue and I'm at the end of my rope trying to figure out what to do. I'm so disgusted and can't stand it.

    # Run the installer you downloaded.

  • Firefox keeps asking me what program to use to open file types even though I have selected one and checked "do this for all files of this type" going foward

I am working in Windows and every time I open an attachment, Firefox asks what program to use to open files of this type. I always select the proper program and then check the box that says use this program for all future files of this type. In spite of that, the program continues to ask for every file. How do I turn off this feature and just have the program remember the correct program to use for each type of file extension?

Regardless of your download preferences, web servers can trigger a download prompt by sending either the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' or the ''Content-Disposition: attachment'' header. You can check if that's the case by examining the server response headers in the [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Tools/Web_Console Web Console].
For the latter problem install the InlineDisposition add-on and see if it helps.

If the problem persists, post back here with either an example link or a screenshot of the relevant response headers in the Web Console.

  • What program can search old typewriter documents (1980) which are being scanned as PDF?

What program can search old typewriter documents (1980) which are being scanned into PDF's?

Scanned documents are just images, but using OCR on them will turn them into text documents.  Adobe Acrobat Pro can do that.  After saving the OCR-ed document, it will be searchable by any PDF viewer.

  • Trying to install firefox. Computer asks what program do I want to open with? Don't know what to do.

Trying to install firefox for first time. Computer asks "what program do I want to open with". I have tried a few guesses, but nothing works. What program do I need to open with?
    Thanks

You can remove the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\) manually if you can't uninstall.

  • I downloaded itunessetup but when i open it it asks what program to run it with. but none of the programs listed would be a program to run a .exe program?

so i downloaded itunessetup but when i open it it asks what program to run it with. but none of the programs listed would be a program to run a .exe program? what should i do?

Maybe it didn't get the EXE extension.  If it does not have the extension, put one on it and see if that helps.
If it has a DMG extension, it is the Mac version of the software.

  • When i open firefox, i get asked what program i want to use to open this file.

when i open firefox, i get asked what program i want to use to open this file. i select firefox to open firefox, and it opens to - Index of file:///C:/Documents and Settings/HP_Administrator/- instead of my home page. this has been going on for months. today i updated my kaspersky intrnet security 2011 and since then fire fox will only open in firefox safe, even if i shut down kaspersky. IE opens with no problems.
    thanks

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • I downloaded the update and it asks what program to use to install it?

It downloads the update, then ask what program I want to use to install the download. It gives me the list of software; i.e., Adobe, Office, Notepad, etc.
So - what software do I use to install it since it is not automatically installing the update itself.
    Thanks, Pat

Sorry im new to this ,ive had a iphone but only used it for Calls/text/photos and Browsing/FB
    thanks

There are apps that support multiple document formats e.g. GoodReader 4 supports (read-only) PDFs, text files, images, and word and excel documents - from their help pages on their website, http://www.goodreader.com/gr-man-view-other.html :
For file types that are not covered by our own advanced viewing engines, we use standard built-in viewing engine, which should be familiar to you from your Safari application experience. When you open any file in Safari, you activate the same viewing engine that we use for the following file types: Microsoft Office files - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML files and Safariwebarchives, iWork files - Pages, Numbers, Keynote.
Please note that the built-in viewer doesn't support very large MS Office files. If your MS Office file crashes built-in viewing engine, we suggest to convert it to a PDF file. PDF files of huge sizes are easily handled by GoodReader using our own advanced viewing engine.
That app also allows you to create folders within it, so you can have separate folders for your areas.

Firefox updates automatically - see [[Updating Firefox]] - but if you want to update to the latest Firefox version (currently 9.0.1) by downloading the installer .dmg file, just save it to your computer then start the installation by double-clicking the .dmg file. See [[Installing Firefox on Mac]] if you need more help.

  • My computer just started asking what program to use to run firefox. what happened and how do I fix? Thanks

I just installed Firefox a few days ago and has been really good. Today my computer will not open Firefox, it keeps wanting to know what program to open in.
what do I do to fix this?
    Thanks

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

  • In what program was this PDF created from?

    Hi,
I hope someone can clue me in on how this PDF was made where I'm guessing if you have the regular Adobe Acrobat reader you can edit/interact with the file. I really love to know if there is a tutorial that can teach me how to create empty square text field for edits by other people. Here's the link
    http://www.sec.gov/about/forms/formd.pdf
I was thinking the document could have been done in Adobe InDesign or even Microsoft Word but I doubt it. And I think there might be some XML involves that I have never learn how to or know what it is.

There are any number of programs that can create a PDF form. Adobe has Acrobat, LiveCycle Designer, LiveCycle ES, InDesign. Third party providers inlcude Open Office Org and Nitro PDF. It is even possible to add form fields in a PS file and have Distiller create the form. You might want to look at the Acrobat Users Community for tutorials and eSeminars about creating forms.

  • What program to open PDF's

Right now, for some reason PDF files that I open from emails open in Photo Shop Elements.  Don't know why this program became the default for PDF's but it is very difficult to do anything with them in PSE.  How do I designate another program to open them automatically and what is the best program?
    iMac Intel, OS 10.8.3

To change the default application, right-click the PDF and choose "Get Info". Finally, under "Open with", choose Preview or the app you need. Read > http://www.macworld.com/article/1154861/changedefaultapp.html
