i have wanted a repeater for a long time, not because of 3g coverage, but my house has only about 1 bar!!!! i have never seen a repeater like the one that you show, the only ones i have seen are about $1000 so i have never tried one. i might have to look into something like you posted though
besides my desire to have one, i have heard good things, and you could always buy it, try it, if it doesn't make a difference 10min after you hook it up, put it back in the box and send it back, especially at amazon, they have great return policies.

How to boost router signal.........

Hi- I read through some postings but really didn't see an answer to my issue. Most of that is due to the fact that I really didn't understand what was being said so I thought I'd ask my own question, in my words and maybe I can get an answer or two and get a bit more educated about this issue.
I have a MBP, upstairs here in the living room. Down in the basement is the spaceship-shaped-Airport router (Apple) that we have that serves my MBP, my hubby's G4 and my son's Dell. Prior to the MBP I had a G4 desktop that connected just fine with a very stable signal from the Airport router. Not so with this MBP. It goes up and down way too often. I am wondering if there is something that I can set up on my desk here that would wirelessly connect to the router downstairs that would help boost the signal. I really don't want anything that plugs in- I am already finding the scarcity of USB ports on this machine frustrating. Or if anyone has any other ideas, I am open for suggestions! i guess we should clarify some information.
first, changing the channel (from 1 to 11) does not change the wireless power signal and shouldn't make any difference unless there is another wireless network near your's using the same channel. check if your computer detect any other wireless other than your's. if it does, you can do testing by switching from channel 1, 6 and 11. but again, this will should not change your wi-fi coverage.
as for the coppertrail's post, I beleive he is refering to a setting in the Airport Extreme. Some wireless router have a setting to adjust the wireless signal power. this setting is intended to those who live in small apartment buildings that deliberatly want to reduce their wireless coverage to avoid other people live near them to use their signal. I do not know either if the Airport Extreme have this setting, but you should verify and adjust this to 100% output power using the Airport Assistant. IF you do have this setting and IF it is adjusted lower than 100%, this may solve your issue.
finally, moving your Airport Extreme will change nothing to your setup. regardless of its location, it will need to be plugged into an electrical outlet as well as your modem. so, you need to move your modem as well and depending if you have a coax cable or a DSL internet provider, you will to have a phone plug or a coax cable near to plug your modem. _the idea is to have the Airport Express near the center of the area you want to use its signal._ consider that any wall, floor or solid material will reduce the wireless signal. the best location will be where there will be the less walls between the Airport and your computer.
finally, the Airport Express will only extend your wireless coverage. It will act as a repeater; i.e. it will receive the signal sent by the Airport Extreme and resend the signal. so, if you place it somewhere where the signal of the Extreme is still there but low, the Express will receive the low signal and resent it full power. Express can only extend the range of another Express or a Extreme Base Station but it should work with your Dell running Linux.
hope this clarify this a little. but the way I understand your setup; is that you have your router on the basement while you try to use it two stories higher. I beleive this is expecting a little bit too much of wireless coverage. unless there is a physical obstacle to place your modem and the Airport near where you use it, do it. It will improve your setup.

Yes, you can use a second 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) to extend the range of the first one.
Here are the basic steps to do so:
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

Boost network signal using AirPort Express without using WDS?

I want to boost the signal on my network using my airport express without setting up a WDS network, is this possible?
I had previously set up my Time Capsule as a WDS main and my airport express as a WDS remote, but this slowed the network down dramatically.

If you have an AirPort Express 802.11n, you can configure it to "extend a wireless network" and maintain "n" speeds on the network with a minimum of bandwidth loss.
Check the model number of your Express is you are not sure which version you have. Look on the side of the device for the Model Number. Model No. A 1264 is the "n" version.
Post back if you have this version and need more info on the "extend" setup.

Boost weak signal?

I have a PowerBook G4 titanium that is airport ready but has no airport card that I've been trying to get hooked up to a 2Wire wireless router/modem for wireless. I recently purchased a mac wireless pc card which FINALLY solved the problem (after some hair pulling and tons of patience to reconfigure the router wireless settings).
I can now get onto the internet but only when I am sitting right in front of the router in my Aunt's home office. When I go to my room, which is down the hall and only a few feet away, the signal is too weak and I get disconnected. Ugghhhh!!!
My question is what can I do to boost the signal so that I can have internet access in my room where I have a printer? . . Can I use the airport base station as a bridge to increase the signal? What about the airport extreme base station or airport express station, will these work with an older mac?
I read on one of the other forums that I could get a D-Link Wireless Range extender. But I saw a post from a consumer on a local retail site that says these were not compatible with the 2Wire router. This router also doesn't have the option of adding an antennae which was another suggestion.
I just want to know before I shell out any more money what is the cheapest option, since I'm only staying with my Aunt for the Summer. But I need to access the internet and my printer while I'm here. . .

If you are 20 feet from the router and only show a couple of "bars", either your router is not performing up to specifications or you have some wireless interference issues at your location.
An AirPort Express can extend the signal "deeper" but it won't make it stronger. It can only extend what it receives.
I suggest that you investigate your low signal strength issue before adding an AirPort Express. BTW, I assume that you are aware that the Express can only "extend" a signal from another Apple "n" router. It won't work with the products of other manufacturers for that purpose.

The signal in my apartment is mediocre at best and I wanted to use my time capsule to boost the signal in my apartment while keeping their Fios network intact upstairs. The only way to boost signal with apple products is to another apple product.
Or run ethernet or some other replacement for wireless. eg EOP (homeplug) adapters. These are not foolproof though.. they depend on circuits being wired via simple fuses and can at times not work.
Your other choice is to get an Airport Express.. plug it into the FIOS router and use that to establish a network.. it can also be used as a wireless bridge in the downstairs area but you can pick whichever works the best. If your wireless is reasonable at least in one location downstairs any wireless bridge could do the same thing.. and plug into the TC for your downstairs wireless.

Boost Wireless Signal with Airport Express

I bought the new airport express to boost the signal from my time capsule (in my house) to my garage office.
I have the AX set up but I don't see any difference in the signal.
What am I doing wrong?

Check the settings for both devices using AirPort Utility as follows:
1) For the Time Capsule, click on Manual Setup and then click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to display the wireless settings for your TC. Make sure there is a check mark next to "allow this network to be extended"
2) For the Express, click Manual Setup and click the Wireless tab. Wireless Mode should be "extend a wireless network" (Users often choose "join" by mistake when they are trying to extend the network). Make sure there is a check mark next to "allow wireless clients".

Express - "boosting" Netgear signal, and printing wirelessly?

A buddy of mine has asked me to ask the following for him (and I have similar issues myself). He's using WinXP Home with a Netgear dg834pn router. He's bought an AirPort Express to use when he's on the road, but he wants to know if he can use his AP Express at home to "boost" the signal he gets from his Netgear router. Is this possible, and what must he do?
Second, Giovanni would like to know whether or not he can print wirelessly (via the AP Express's USB port) if he is somehow able to get his AP Express to "boost" the Netgear router's signal. I told him I thought that he could do so only if he replaced the Netgear router with the AP Express altogether, but I'm not really sure. Hence, my questions.
Oh, and I assume that if he can get his AP Express to "boost" or "bridge" the Netgear signal, he should also be able to play his iTunes from his laptop, correct?

No this is not possible with a Netgear router.
You can not use an Airport Express to "boost" or "extend" a Netgear wireless network. It is possible to configure the Airport Express to join the network as a client.

In client mode, he can get the Airport Express to join the existing wireless network (as a client) and then he will be able to print via a shared printer and stream AirTunes from his iTunes.

I just read that the antennae are not removeable on the WRT54GV8. If this is the case, how do I go about boosting the signal on this wireless router?

I read the same thing about the ver8 router and dont know for sure if its true, if it is I would think about returning it for a router that you could add a better antenna to.

Boosting my signal with two airport extremes

I have a wirelessN airport extreme in my basement office. I get a wireless signal for my Tivo on the third floor, but it is around 35% signal strength. So I want to boost the signal to get a stronger signal. Which airport product should I use -- extreme or express? Will pairing these boost the signal?

You might want to consider all the options to get the best signal possible to the Tivo.
The absolute "best" way to do this would be to run an ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to the Tivo.
If it's not possible to run the ethernet cable, for the "next best" option, you might consider using a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the AC wiring in the home to transmit the ethernet signal. While not quite as solid as a formal ethernet cable connection, the latest generation of powerline adapters provide performance that is almost as good as a normal cable...and with faster and more reliable performance than wireless.
The last option would be wireless. It's possible for either the AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme to "extend" the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme. This would probably work OK for normal internet browsing and audio streaming, but an "extended" wireless network may or may not be able to adequately provide the extra bandwidth required to download movies or video, especially high definition sources.
If you decide to try the wireless route, you might want to understand the store's return policy, just in case things don't work out as well as expected.

Boosting 5ghz signal

Ok I have been having loads of problems in my new flat with my airport setup. It seems the walls are made of the same stuff the use for nuclear bunkers.
I have bought a new express to go with my extreme and want to run it at N 5ghz to get the extra bandwidth. It seems to run fine at 2.4ghz and both of them talk fine. As soon as you put it in to 5ghz the signal goes no were.
Although my walls are pretty bad it the signal is still pretty pathetic it only has to transmit about 6m. I could solve it buy spending another £65 and putting one half way between, but that is just pathetic. Is there any way I can boost the signal even with an antenna of sorts?

Did you get any farther on this? I'm playing around with the 2.4 vs. 5 GHz options, too, and finding various issues:
+ 5 GHz seems coverage seems to have trouble when the devices are not in the same room (line-of-sight).
+ 5 GHz works with two newer Apple laptops, but not with one slightly older model (1.5 years old).
+ Airport Express base station doesn't 'see' the 5 GHz wireless signal at all.
Is this consistent with what other people have seen?
Is there an FAQ somewhere that explains all this, or is it more of a trial-and-error thing...
