Repetitive permissions

After every startup, however frequent I get this same batch of Resourses/Admin permissions errors:
"Group differs on ./Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/Resources/pmTool, should be 80, group is 0
Owner and group corrected on ./Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/Resources/pmTool
Permissions corrected on ./Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/Resources/pmTool

Owner and group corrected on ./Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app/Contents/Resources/kcproxy
Permissions corrected on ./Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app/Contents/Resources/kcproxy

Owner and group corrected on ./Applications/Utilities/ODBC Administrator.app/Contents/Resources/iodbcadmintool
Permissions corrected on ./Applications/Utilities/ODBC Administrator.app/Contents/Resources/iodbcadmintool"
If they are real, they must arise during startup. I have done a full Applejack HD etc repair, but it still happens. Should I worry? I'm hesitating before upgrading to 10.4.9.Thanks.

Hi
I get this as well because I use Intego VirusBarrier, do you have it?. According to Intego, the changes made are to "make your system more secure. Repairing the permissions using Disk Utility will revert them to their insecure state."
BTW, even if you do repair the permissions, VirusBarrier will change them again at the next restart.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Zipped folders are created without inherited permissions

When I create a zip folder, the zip folder does not inherit permissions are from its parent folder, nor from the files being archived.
(Fixing the permissions manually is not a problem -- only an inconvenience -- but this is repetitive.)  I confirmed that the text files, before archiving, have inherited full-control for Everyone from the parent folder.
    Specific example:
-- in a folder with inherited full-control for Everyone, I archive text files.
-- I archive the files by selecting a group of them, right-clicking the selection, hovering over "Send to", and selecting "Compressed (zipped) folder".
-- The zip folder is created within the same folder...
but the zip folder does not allow full-control to Everyone.
    Why I care:
The parent folder is being backed-up using a bat file that executes ROBOCOPY.
The robocopy fails to backup the zip sub-folders.
I have to edit the permissions on each zip sub-folder after creating it, or set ROBOCOPY parameters to limit retries (in which case zip folders are not backed up).
Is there a simple fix, trick, or setting to make "Send to" / "Compressed (zipped) folder" automatically create the zip folder with inherited permissions?
(Note:  this problem mostly affects us on one of our "Server 2008 R2" systems, but I have recreated it in Windows 7.)
(Also: I posted this question first on answers.microsoft.com, but was told to post it here.)
Related question on technet (not yet resolved, as of 9/26/2012) --
"Compressed (zipped) folder option always created locked zip file"

I realise that this is post has been here for a long time but I happened to be researching something similar and think I have somewhat of a solution for you.
Send to compressed (zipped) folder inherites permissions from the temp folder as this is the folder that windows uses to make the zip file.
Try changing the permissions to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

  • Repair Permissions differences between Onyx and Disk Utility

If I repair permissions, there are a large number of 'repaired permissions' if I switch between using Onyx (10.6) and Disk Utility. Most of them are in
    System / Library / CoreServices
    System / Library / Java
    System / Library / Frameworks
Why should this be? It makes me think that either Onyx or Disk Utility is doing it wrong. If I had to back which one it is, I'd have to say Onyx is the likeliest suspect. In other words should I avoid using Onyx to repair permissions and just use DU in future?

should I avoid using Onyx to repair permissions and just use DU in future?
Probably, but some permission results are always and repetitively wrong:
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.

  • My 13" macbook just stopped working. When you turn it on you get a white screen and hear a repetitive clicking sound on the left side. Is this the hard drive? Any suggestions on replacement drives?

My 13" macbook just stopped working. When you turn it on you get a white screen and hear a repetitive clicking sound on the left side. Is this the hard drive? Any suggestions on replacement drives?
    Thanks

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Disk Utility's "Repair Permissions" doesn't

On my MacPRo running Leopard 10.5.4, when I repetitively execute "Repair Permissions," Disk Utility repeatedly gives the following output:
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
ACL found but not expected on "Library".
But Disk Utility's "Repair Permissions" fails to make the necessary repairs, as subsequent runs yield the same results. Is this a "normal" thing, despite the above output messages, or do I have an underlying problem requiring further investigation? If necessary, suggestions as to how to proceed?

  • BCS Set Permissions problem with PowerShell

Hello, I am seeing an odd behavior, was wondering if anyone else encountered this problem before.
I have a large BDC Model with multiple Entities (ECTs) that was created with Visual Studio, as part of the process we have a Powershell script that iteritates all the entities and sets their permissions to the 'All Authenticated Users' group.
    $serviceContextURL="https://ACME.dsi-sp.com/"
    $ECTNamespace="ACMEBusinessDataConnectivityModel.ACMEReportingPortal"
    [String[]]$permissions=@("Execute","Edit","SelectableInClients","SetPermissions")
    $bdc = Get-SPBusinessDataCatalogMetadataObject -BdcObjectType Catalog -ServiceContext $serviceContextURL
    # Get the list of all LOB systems
    $lobs = $bdc.GetLobSystems("ACMEReportingPortal")
    Foreach($lob in $lobs){
        $lobEntities = $lob.Entities
        Write-Host $lob.DefaultDisplayName
        foreach($entity in $lob.Entities) {
            write-host "ECTName: " $entity.Name
            $ECTName = $entity.Name
            $ECT = Get-SPBusinessDataCatalogMetadataObject -BdcObjectType "Entity" -ServiceContext $serviceContextURL -Name $ECTName -Namespace  $ECTNamespace
            if($ECT-ne $null)
                 $user = New-SPClaimsPrincipal -EncodedClaim "c:0(.s|true"
                 Grant-SPBusinessDataCatalogMetadataObject -Identity $ECT -Principal $user -Right $permissions
                 write-host "Permissions set for " $ECTName
            else
write-host -f Yellow $ECTName external content type does not exists
The script works fine as expected, however when you try to access the External List that is based on one of these ECTs, you get access denied. I then go into BCS validate the permissions are set as expected i.e. 'All Authenticated Users' is selected with
the four permission, and it looks fine. try again access denied. I then go and remove the 'All Authenticated Users' group from Permissions, and manually re-add it back, try the External list again, now it works. !
Has one seen this before or can comment on why it is not working with powershell?  is there a service recycling needed perhaps or something like that?
    Thanks in advance, mark

    Thanks for responding.
its too repetitive to keep adding permissions via CA, there are a lot of entities and we are in a constant state of developing the BDC solution so we are deploying it a lot.

  • Why do i have to keep repairing permissions for my samsung SCX-4500?

Recently (since installing OS X  10.8) when I am sending something to my printer, Samsung SCX-4500 (Darth Vader decor), I will be asked for a certificate and then there will be request to repair permissions for the printer. Once that is done, the printer will print fine. But then some hours or days later I am asked to jump through the same hoops.
    Anyone else...?

Please describe exactly what happens and what you do to recover, including the complete, verbatim text of any error messages you see, and any relevant messages from the log:
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/cups/error_log" from the file list on the left side of the Console window. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the time of the last failed printing attempt. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Repairing permissions not repairing

I just installed a new 8-core Mac Pro, fresh install of Leopard, plus iLife 09 and a ton of my software.
Am finding this quirk: I repair permissions, and a bunch of "permissions differ" messages come up (most pertaining to Front Row, BackRow, iPhoto Access, and iWork) but if I run it twice in a row, those permissions don't get fixed. I thought Repair Permissions now permanently fixes all permissions (unlike older Mac OS's in which sometimes permissions wouldn't get fixed).
    Problem?

  • ESS WebDynpro Appilication with Repetitive structure

I am trying to develop an ESS Webdynpro application for Infotype P0585 (Section 80) P0591 (Nominee Details), both these infotypes have repetitive structure.
There is no screen structure or RFC's(For Read, Modify, Edit Operations) for these Infotypes.
We are using ECC 5.0 (Software Component: EA-HR(SAP R/3 Enterprise HR Extension) Support Package Level : 09 )
I understand that customising for repeat Structure can be done by making an entry in the tables T588AUTO_MAP, T588AUTO_TABLE     (Mapping for Conversion of Repeat Structure/Tables), but both these tables do not permit entry.
Any guidelines in developing Webdynpro application for services that use infotypes that have repetitive structure and implementing conversion class for the above infotype.

    Hi Sarath ,
I am also working on Infotypes P0585/6 .
There are some modifications to be done in the Output Table Conversion Method inside the CL_HRPA_UI_CONVERT class for IT0585/6. The screen structure's was not getting copied properly and the Object Key of the Line-Records were lost inside this method somewhere. These changes are been rectified now and will be working by the end of the week.
As for the Entry in the T588AUTO_TABLE , it has been done  for P0585/6 .

  • 3 UI problems and a permissions trouble

Hi, I have three little problems:
    i) The blue and white lines that should be present in some windows where are presumed to be list of items (i.e.: iTunes, safari's download window, etc), all is white, except in the shadow of another window.
ii) If I select some text and press  cmd-c safari starts. I've looked in the preferences for shortcut but i didn't found anything.
iii) Double click on the title bar of windows don't make them collapse.
    and a big one:
    I) I modified the permission of the root directory and without thinking the consequences I have applied recursively the new permissions; after that my system was broken so I have reinstalled it without formatting.
Now after two consecutive the computer doesn't complete another boot with the repetition of the message: "Still waiting for device", if I restart with shift hold down all seem ok and then I can restart another time without problems.
Can someone suggests me how to fix those?
    Thanks.

If your apps function correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to Users/(yourname)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

    Hi Ben,
Thank you for the response. I followed the link and tried reading everything you posted on AEs but I'm afraid that I didn't understand it all. It seems that each AE example had a single input and a single output (e.g. a double). Is this the case?
What I have is a couple of front panel clusters containing (approximately) 18 control doubles, 8 indicator doubles, 5 boolean radio button constructs and 26 boolean control discretes. I clusterized it to make it readable. In addition I'll eventually have a cluster of task references for hardware handles.
All I want to do is update the front panel values like I would do in a C, VB or any other language. I've tried referencing the cluster and using the reference from inside the loops. I've tied using local variables. Neither works. I'm experimenting with globals but it seems that I have to construct the front panel in the gloabal and then I wouldn't know how to repoduce that on the front panel of the main VI.  Sometimes it seems that more time is spent getting around Labview constructs than benefitting from them.
I hope the 'Add Attachment' function actuals puts a copy of the VI here and not a link to it.
    Thanks again for the suggestion,
    Frank

I am trying to import developed images from LightRoom 5 Photoshop 6 for further editing.  I am receiving this message and the images will not open.....'Could not open scratch file because the file is locked, or you do not have necessary access permissions or another program is using the file.  Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file. How do I fix this?  I would greatly appreciate it if you would respond with terms and procedures that a computer ignorant user, such as me, will understand.   Thanks.

Have you tried restoring the Preferences yet?

  • My iMac 8.1 was slowing down and had permissions problems. I backed everything up, and then re-installed. Now all I get is a black screen. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: HDD-1336. Help!

My iMac 8.1 (10.6.8 ) was slowing down and had recurrent permissions problems, mostly with Java. I backed everything up, and then re-installed from time machine. Now all I get is a black screen which says I need to reboot. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: 4 MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1336 or HDD-1327. When I reboot from the OSX CD and start disc utilities everything checks out OK. When I reload 10.5.2 from the OSX CD everything seems to work OK and no more permissions problems. But then I loose all my email and safari stuff. Anyone have any ideas short of going back to my old PC?

    Cheers. Don
No unfortunatley it's too old, you are referring to Target Display Mode which became avialble in 2009, your 2008 needs to have the HD replaced. I'd still do that if everything else is OK or you can simply buy a new MM and display or even a new iMac  or an Apple refurbished iMac to save money.
