Replace 5400rpm 320 HDD w 7200rpm 500 HDD on T400 7417-CTO

On the Model listed in the "Subject" field above is there any reason why I can't replace the original 320GB 5400 RPM HDD with a 7200 RPM 500GB HDD. I checked the Lenovo site for my model and it stops at 320/7200 or 500/5400. Does anyone know why the 500/7200 is not on the recommended list? Has anyone installed the 500/7200 on this model? I checked some of the retail drives out there and there are no differences in the power requirements. In one case the power draw was less on the 500. So I'm guessing it's not heat or insufficient power supply.
Also, the pre-installed drive has an 8MB cache, any reason why I can't install either a 16MB or 32MB cache drive?
Some other T400 models have the 500/7200 drive in the recommended list??? The only thing really different about my model is the Hi-brite display. I know it's a power hog, but as I said there doesn't appear to be any additional power requirements with the 500/7200 drive and no pert of this computer gets very hot no matter how intense the use. FYI, I am not a gamer. Does that tilt things back in my favor?? Additionally the video on my unit is controlled by the Intel on-chip 4500, so no extra heat or current draw there. Please help me answer this question. It's important to my work and the software I run.

Short answer; go for it
Long answer; as long as the drive is SATA 2.5" width and 9.5mm height you can use it in your T400. You might notice a difference in power consumption and heat, but that all depends on your usage.

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore should be very smooth.

Need to upgrade my T400 and T61 HDD. I want to have 7200 RPM 320GB. Is the upgrade quite noticeable, I mean the speed and performance? What can you recommend that is already tried and tested?

Interesting. I'm running a Hitachi 320G 7200RPM drive in my T400 with no detectable vibration. On my T61, a Seagate 200G 7200RPM drive vibrated like crazy - tried two of them - but a Hitachi 200G drive was pretty close to vibration free.
I'm quite happy with the Hitachi in the T400. It is fast, quiet, and cool. YMMV.
I wonder if the reported manufacturing changes in the T-series keyboards and top bezels could explain the difference?

(2011 13" Macbook Pro Model 8,1) I want to replace my 320GB HDD and replace it with a 6gb/s 120GB SSD. I also want to replace the optical drive with a 7200RPM HDD 750GB.

I want to use:
The SSD and enclosure to replace the optical drive with the new HDD
So basically, I want to use the SSD in the link above. I want to set this up as either preferrably a fusion drive. If not the smoothest most stable configuration. I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011 13" with 8 GB of ram, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 320GB HDD.
I want to install the SSD directly to the SATA port where the 320 GB HDD is currently. I then want to install the new HDD, preferrably a name brand 750 GB 7200RPM hard drive where the optical drive is now. I want the storage to work in a way in which the OS, and my most used programs and files get stored on the SSD, and everything else gets stored on the larger hard drive. My most preferred method would be Fusion drive, or a SPAN drive.
I would like to use a Seagate Momentus XT, but I learned that there might be issues with compatability with this. I dont mind using the 3 gb/s 500GB option, but would like to know if it would even be smart to do it. I also have no problem settling for a regular 7200 RPM hard drive.
I have read a bunch of stuff online but I still am not sure if this is even possible. I want my machine to run as fluid as possible so any info would be appreciated.

Will I notice a speed increase in opening applications and general use? Also will it help photoshop to run any faster?
The 5400rpm 8MB Cache drive is the standard Hitachi that comes with the MacBook Pro. I don't know the read/write speeds but I think from bench marking they are around 40-60MB/s
The 7200rpm 16MB Cache drive is a Seagate Momentus. The read/write speeds are estimated to be around 80-100MB/s

I somewhat agree. That is a lot of data to lose.
I, on the other hand, somehow end up using all that space. Each audio file that I have takes around 50mb or so and pictures take around 12mb since I shoot pictures in raw format. It adds up pretty quickly. I don't always have access to my external hard drive so it is nice to have the extra space built into my laptop so I can store all this data. I do keep a back up just in case the worst were to happen.
Plus, I will use my mac for the next 5 or 6 years until I even think about purchasing another one. Who knows how much hd space applications, audio files, and movies will take up then. Technology is changing everyday and in a couple of years, 500 gb will seem like nothing.

Hello Huffer Many thanks for your prompt reply. I have been doing a bit more research and came across an old spec for a "lenovo" hard-disk (HDD) with 320GB capacity used in numerous ThinkPads. Unfortunately it does not include the X300 model that i have. The full details can be found HERE. The height of the HDD is 7 (SEVEN) mm. I may be paranoid but can you please just confirm that the lenovo X300 ThinkPads (see full details above) with the 320GB HDD really have a height of 9.5mm and so will be able to take the HDD 2.5" with 2TB that I plan to buy. If the height really is only 7m then I have a problem. Then I think that i will have to go up my idea of increasing the storage space. If you cannot answer the question with 100% certitude then I will have to reopen the laptop and measure the space available but that is a pain since I am new to all this and afraid of damaging the HDD. I need to replace my Apple HDD Toshiba MK5065GSXF Media, can I use any 2,5" internal SATA HDD for this?

I'm in a situation where my Apple HDD Toshiba MK5065GSXF Media has completely given up on me. I cannot understand why Toshiba is being used anyhow, together with SeaGate these were assured failures back when I did IT. My question however is: can I simply replace it with any 2,5" internal SATA HDD that I'd wish to use? I tend to favour any WD HDD. I'm running my MacBook Pro off an external HDD nowadays, but it's not a useful option as I'd like to use it at school and all that.
I'd really appreciate your answers and/or recommendations

I really like the HGST Travelstar 7K1000 and it would be a good fit for a 2012 model: 7200rpm, 1TB capacity and SATA III speeds. I have a number of them that I use to clone my internal SSD and have put one inside my MacBook Pro just to see how it performs - top notch!
That's my recommendation - HGST is made by Hitachi and I've always had good luck with Hitachi drives.

I'm happy with opening it up and fitting the replacement drive as I'll do that when Leopard comes out as I'd be doing a new install anyway.
It's only a 5400prm disc, but would this be such an issue? It is a SATA interface drive, which I understand the MB uses. The reason I'm thinking about it is because I'm desperately running out of space on my HDD. I travel a lot, and use Aperture, so my library is quite large. I also have a lot of audio/video content on there, so really need a larger drive.

I too find that even a portable 2.5" version external drive a pain especially when you consider there's a perfectly acceptable internal solution. Having just upgraded to a Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive I can tell you the extra space is a great help. However, as Ricktotronto mentioned it can affect your warranty so it's something to take into consideration.
Yes the Western Digital Scorpio 250GB drive fits. You might contact WD though as from what I know, the anti-shock technology that they use in their Scorpio drives interferes with Apple Sudden Motion Sensor (they basically do the same thing) which can cause crashing. Some have said this is not an issue although I'd confirm this directly with WD.
Additionally, the drive check, while not particularly difficult can be rather "fiddly" so unless you are reasonably mechanically dextrous you can easily dmage something on just opening up your MBP. You will also need the right tools, like a torx 6 screwdriver, as the wrong ones will damage the screws.

The Satellite M50-130 was delivered with the 2.5" 60GB HDD.
This HDD supports a rotation speed of 5400rpm and it supports an enhanced IDE (ATA 6) interface.
So you need an IDE HDD, and not SATA

(Mac Mini mid-2011) Installing an SSD drive as a replacement of the HDD

I just got myself a Crucial M500 240GB SSD drive for my mid-2011 Mac Mini. I intend to replace the standard hard drive with this one.
Here are a couple of thigs that are still unclear to me :
- what will happen when I first boot my Mini after I replaced the HDD with the SSD ? As of now, this drive is in stock state, I guess not even formatted and empty.
- how will I be able to make a fresh install of Mavericks ? I made a bootable Mavericks install usb stick, but haven't found out a way yet to boot on it (I have a wireless Apple keyboard, and holding the cmd key when booting won't pop any disk manager)
Any further details on how I should proceed are appreciated, thanks !

You have to hold the Alt key while your computer is starting up in order to show all bootable partitions, so you will be able to choose the OS X Mavericks installer flash drive.
Then, format the SSD with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
In case you want to clone your HDD to the SSD, you can use the Restore feature in Disk Utility to do it. Get a USB to SATA adapter, connect the HDD and follow these steps with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html Choose your HDD as "Source" and the SSD as "Destination". When you have finished, restart and disconnect your HDD.
Just so you know, what I'm trying to do is a fresh install of Mavericks, from scratch. I do not want to clone the install I'm running know on my standard HD.
I tried to use several keyboard combinason without any luck. I Googled that and found out that this is normal behaviour on a Mac with a wireless keyboard. How am I supposed to get into recovery mode then ?

Replaced a new HDD but need to get info from old HDD, can I swap it out?

Excuse me if I sound like an idiot....my factory original 40GB Toshiba HDD finally had to be replaced after serving me for 5 yrs. I took it to a local dealer and replaced it with a new 160GB Samsung drive.
Here comes the problem...I realized that I had forgotten to backup some important files. So my question is, is it safe (and possible) to open up the laptop myself, plug in the old drive, run it, and backup the files I want on a removable drive, and then swap the new drive back in?
I hope I am not over-simplifying the problem. Thanks though, your help is greatly appreciated.

You have the 12" Powerbook correct?
If so then that means that you have a IDE or some call it ATA (not to be confused with SATA found in new macs) type of drive.
So what you need is an external 2.5" HDD case or enclosure that has an external interface that is firewire or USB, and an internal interface that is IDE or also known as ATA.

On ebay the external enclosure/IDE is what you want, the external portable probably comes with a drive in it. You have a drive already you want to install into the case so you do not need the external portable.
The 2.0 vs 2.5 I'm not sure about unless you typo'ed and meant 3.0 vs 2.5. As there are two different sizes for HDD's 3"(for desktops) and 2.5"(for laptops).
Firewire and USB are rival interfaces which allow external devices to attach to a computer. Your Powerbook will accept either, but if you plan on using the external enclosure to boot you Powerbook then you'll need the firewire as Powerbooks can only boot external from firewire not USB. Some enclosures have both USB and Firewire and that would be ok, some people prefer them, as I do.
I hope that your old drive is still strong enough to get the info off of it.

Can PCI flash storage on the new MBPs be replaced with a HDD?

I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro. Apple's store has several available, all but one of which use PCI-based flash storage as opposed to SATA drives.
My question is, if I buy one of these, is it possible to swap out the flash storage drive for a hard drive, or does it use a different kind of connection? I seem to remember that the entire bus has been overhauled for these new PCI ones meaning that it's no longer as simple as simply swapping an SSD for a HDD manually.
Does anyone know if it can be done?

I have a late 2009 iMac and had to replace HDD. Prior to replacement I had version 3.43 and i made a vault of all existing image files on an external HDD. When I reinstalled Aperture I got version 3.44 and when I try to restore vault it will not open.

I copied vault bact to internal HDD and tried to restore library
