Replace a CD/DVD writer player in a 7 year old iMac

My wife has an early 2006 iMac that has a failed internal CD/DVD writer player in it.  The CD/DVD drive will not eject a CD.  I have spent months trying to get the computer to eject the disk.  Nothing works!  I brought the iMac to the local Apple Store today to find out that we have a vintage iMac and they are not allowed by Apple to service the machine.  It is too old!  I have been left with a decision to make. I could open up the iMac and remove the CD/DVD drive and purchase a new compatible external "ac powered" CD/DVD unit and I would have a working system.  A few questions that comes to mind if I persue this solution.  This is the only thing wrong with the machine--is it worth saving?  How important is a grounding wrist strap and if it is important where can I obtain one easily... Where is a reliable place to get a replacement drive. Any and all suggestions and hints will help with this project.

Ah ok I missed that there is a disk in there now. The fact that it spins up indicates that it might not be physically stuck so there mat be a way to get it out.
I know you wrote that you have spent a lot of time trying to get the disk out but just to be sure all bases were covered have you looked at the advice at sites like Quick Tip: How to Force Eject a Stuck Disc | Mactuts+ (there are others but all the instructions are basically the same)
Also as the machine is from 2006 is that a PPC or Intel machine? Older Macs actually had a small hole that you could but a paper clip into to get a physically stuck disk out.
BTW we are talking about a full size disk right? Not of of those mini-disks?
If all this fails then as I wrote above you are lucky in one respect the old iMacs were easy to open. You shouldn;t have any major problems getting into it. Just take your time, follow the directions and be aware of what you are doing. Taking pictures at each step and having separate bins or baggies to put in the screws and other parts as you remove them will help when you put it all back together.

Sadly the latest iMacs are as different to a G5 as it is possible to be:
    1. A non-intuitive operating system (Mavericks) that does not compare to what you are used to with Tiger 10.4.11.
    2. None of your applications that run on a G5 can run on a new Intel-based iMac. They will all have to be updated, i.e. re-purchased.
    3. Nothing you may have connected to your G5 can connect to a new iMac: they do not have firewire, they do not have a built-in superdrive for CDs or DVDs so you can only install software via the internet. None of your existing accessories will work as is.
My personal recommendation would be to stick with your G5 and tell us more about how it is letting you down so that we can try to help you fix it.
I will ask the Hosts to move this thread to the PPC iMac forum where those of us who still use them hang out!

  • Flash Player won't start on a 4 year old iMac with Maverick

    L.S.
I switched to Maverick on my 4 year old iMac. At first the program Maverick slowed down te activity speed. After changing datafiles to an external drive it works oké now. No problems untill now.
Recent I needed Adobe Flash Player, which is downloaded in the most recent version on my iMac, for starting a program for showing results. The program doesn't start, I had to download the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player.
No result - Testing - downloading - removing cookies - restarting - downloading and installing again, etc.
Testing the Flash Player on YouTube the problem results in the same problem.
The software on my iMac is up to date.
Has anybody the solution to solve this ?
    Thank you,

  • My 7-year-old iMac died. I don't plan to replace it. It is backed up to Crashplan. Is it possible to restore my iPhoto library to the cloud, i.e. iCloud or Dropbox, so that I can access the photos as needed from my iPad or iPhone?

Probably not - but that certainly does not involve iPhoto for the Mac - you need to look at Crashplan support for you options
And iCloud is not a place to store photos so that is certainly not a possibility
If you restore your masters folder out of the iPhoto library you will have all of your original photos to do with what you please

  • Should I spend $960 to replace the logic board of a 5 year old iMac?

my 5year old iMac cannot power on after a power shut down, and the technician of apple service told me that they checked everything and it's the logic board that needs replacement which will cost $960 ...
Should I proceed to fixed it in this rate? or just leave it and look forward ...?
What's the typical life space of an iMac? Can 5 years be regarded as good enough?
    Frustrated ...I'm
    Thanks!

    Thank you, guys!
I decided not to replace the logic board.
However, I don't know what to do with the hard drive taken out from the broken iMac which I assume is in good condition. I have another post here to ask help on how to retrieve data from this hard drive although I know the login password for both the OS X and Windows7 installed on that drive ...
Hope you guys can kindly advise, too!
    Thank you very much!

  • Amzing.. just replace my 7 year old imac with a new 27 "iMac  and   last night realised there is no built in drive for DVD., Amzing.. just replace my 7 year old imac with a new 27 "iMac and last night realised there is no built in drive for DVD.

Amazing the new 27 inch I mac has no built in dVD player. Bit like buying a brand new car and finding it doesnt have any doors.

Great analogy - particularly applicable to folks who would buy a new car without looking at it, never mind taking it for a test drive.

  • Sharing a DVD player on my old iMac - Retina iMac does not display the DVD

I'm setting up my new retina display iMac which doesn't come with a DVD player so I set my old iMac up to share its CD/DVD player. But my new Retina/Yosemite iMac doesn't seem to be able to find the DVD player on the old iMac. Not listed at all in Finder.
    Can someone help?
    Thank-you.

  • SonyAVCHD video looks great in iMovie11 or iDVD7.1.2. When I burn a DVD it's terrible. If I freeze frame I see squares. The picture has poor contrast. I've viewed DVD on my 6-year-old, 24 in. intel 2.16 GHz iMac, and on TV. Help!

I just bought a very good quality Sony AVCHD camcorder. I also just upgraded my computer from Tiger to Snow Leapord. My iMac is a 6-year-old, 2.16GHz Intel 2 Duo, with a 24 inch screen and 3GB Ram.
My Sony camcorder HD video looks great in iMovie11 and in iDVD7.1.2., but when I burn a DVD "professional" it looks terrible. If I look at a freeze frame on the DVD I see image made-up of squares. The picture has poor contrast. It looks as bad as poor quality VHS. Do I need to get a new iMac to make this work? Is it possible to make a sharp, clear DVD from AVCHD footage with a 6-year-old iMac like mine?

That thread helped for a time.  But now it seems as though my computer is back to slow again.  But, some of the jargon is over my head as well.  Not sure I knew quoite everything they were talking about.  But thanks a lot for that, it helped I probably just need to reread it and follow the instructions again.  Thanks so much.

  • Need to replace DVD writer - available options for 2010?

    Hi guys,
Usual problem, my old DVD writer Pioneer DVR 106D is starting to get choosy about what it reads. I've seen the 112D and 116D as recommended replacements and I've read a lot about installation. But these are old models now. It seems the 118L also works, though installers document some strange problems, and even that is being phased out.
I'm in the UK - what model or models should I buy to install in my G5 (OSX 10-5-8)? would like something predictable and proven to work!
    andy

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
A drive that meets your requirements of "predictable" (reliable) and "proven to work" is the Samsung SH-S series drive.
The drives get good reviews, and Mac users have no problems with the drives.
They are also readily available in the UK.
As listed by a highly trusted Mac specialist in the US:

  • Need replacement DVD writer for M70-191 .

My DVD writer on my M70-191 (a Ma****a UJ-8415) is refusing to recognise most CD's and fails when trying to burn DVD's, with various errors. Tried different types and different burning software. Reinstalled drivers, cleaned drive. No luck.
So, I'm looking for a new drive .. where can I buy a suitable replacement?

    Hello Steve
First of all I think you should buy the same drive. Doing this you will avoid eventually compatibility problems. I have Satellite M70 too and the optical disc drive is really good one.
I recommend you to use Google and you will find many online shops where you can order new ODD.

  • Replacing the internal DVD reader with a DVD Writer

I would check the drive compatibility database at xlr8yourmac.com
some brand/model drives will not work as boot devices, and or will not play nice with iDVD.
However, it is quite likely that any Pioneeer drive will work w/o issue.

You cannot burn a 15 or 30 Gig DVD from DVD SP and it is not supported by DVD SP. You can build those to a hard drive for replication
also what is the basic steps to creat the HD project in HD DVD not the DVD 5 and compatible with the toshiba player?
    Best Regard.
You can make a HD DVD on the DVD 5 which will play with the Toshiba and it will give HD quality (and will not play on an SD player) video results, though you cannot author the extras that HD has (the new features in HD as compared to SD DVD), pretty much menus and playback of video. The steps above will create the DVD 5. Have not tried writing to a DVD 9 size for more running time

  • I have a 2006 iMac.  I am trying to hook up a LG external DVD writer.  It doesn't appear on the desktop when I hook it up.  Any suggestions?

I have replaced the internal DVD/CD drive twice in the last 1 1/2 years.  Now when I insert a DVD or CD, it does not appear on the desk top or anywhere else.  I can't eject it.  I tried everything possible that I could think of.  After a few weeks, the CD decided to eject when I started up my computer.  I put another DVD in and this time it showed up on the desk top, so I tried to burn something to it and the computer told me there wasn't any device available to do such.  Then I could not get it to eject.  I tried shutting down the computer and starting it up, and the DVD disappeared off the desk top again.  This time I was able to get it to eject sooner.  I haven't put anything new in there since!  I purchased a third party external DVD writer.  When I hooked it up to the computer, nothing appeared on the desk top.  I put the software disc in (which is windows, but I wanted to see what it did).  It showed up on the desk top and let me open it up.  I was able to eject it from the desk top.  I then put in a blank CD to record music to.  Since there wasn't anything on my computer for the new drive, I tried dragging and dropping the songs onto the CD and it appeared to be burning the CD, but when I put the CD into my stereo, it showed error.  Many years ago I had a LaCie external drive because my computer didn't have one and it used Toast which was on my desk top.  I thought this one was supposed to just work with iTunes, but I am not sure what I am supposed to do with it.  Should the device appear on my desk top when I plug it in?  Is there some kind of software that I am supposed to have?  I am running version 10.6.8.  Thanks!

The external DVD/CD Writer will Not appear on your desktop when you attach it to your iMac.  It will appear in "Finder", which is in your Dock.
    Hope this helps
