Replace a key that fell off keyboard

Hi There,
I can't seem to put back a key that fell off the keyboard of my daughter's graphite ibook. It doesn't seem broken but I wondered if there was a trick that I'm missing.
Thanks
macbook pro, imac, ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sometimes these keys can be tricky to get back on. What you should be able to do is place the key exactly where it should go and then press down on it and it should snap into place without you even having to do anything. Unfortunately this doesn't always work, but with some attempts to get it back on you should usually get it.
Sorry If I couldn't be of that much assistance.

  • Key just fell off keyboard

The D key just fell off my keyboard. I can use D but have to carefully press the little knob. The key cover (?) is completely off. How do I replace it? I tried pressing down on the key cover in the hole it left. That didn't work. No Apple store within 100 miles, so can't take it in. Please help.

It's a very delicate process but once you figure it out, it's very easy afterwards. Tweezers also comes in handy too.
Did the two latch pieces come off with the key? You will have to take them off and put them back on first. Hopefully the little tabs didn't break which keeps them attached to the keyboard.
To see how how they go back on is easier visually then describing so remove any key next to it by taking the tweezers and prying just the key from the top. That way you will leave the 2 pieces underneath in tact. Once you get those attached, just center the key up and press down until it snaps.

  • A key on my key board fell off. What do I do?

I was cleaning my keyboard today and the H key fell off. I managed to get it back on but now it is really stiff and you have to use some serious force to get it to work. When I take it off again it works fine without the key attached.
I got my MBP in 2008 so my apple care is long gone and I live in a city without an apple store. Would I be able to take it to a computer repair shop to get it fixed? Is it even fixable?
    Thanks!

    Hi tonia,
One or more of these sites should help you do it yourself:

  • Macbook Pro letter fell off keyboard

I have a Macbook Pro and one letter fell off my keyboard. How do you put the letter back onto the keyboard?

I'd take it to my local Apple Store and have them do it. Never had a key fall off myself, but you should still be under warranty if it's a late 2011.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Help with a key that popped off!

Hi! I was wondering if someone could help me. My dog jumped up on my lap and ripped my apple key off. How do you get these back in?? It is the apple key to the left of the space bar. Thanks!

Look at the underneath side of the key. Are all the little prongs intact and not bent out of position? If they are bent or broken, you will need to buy a new key.
You need to put the little ring back in first. (If you already have it in, you need to grab hold of the outside top and bottom and pull them up like pulling up an ironing board. Go on to the next paragraph about attaching the key.) If you don't already have the ring in, you pull it open like you would an ironing board. The front of the circle part should be down, and the outside frame on the front should come up. Take the two tabs that are now down in the back and hook them under the two metal pieces at the back of the hole on the keyboard. Take the flat front part of the circle part that is down and hook it under the metal tab on the keyboard at the front of the hole.
Next, snap the the key onto the ring part, attaching the front of the key first. Then rock it back and snap on the back part of the key. Pushing in the center of the key, push downward firmly to reseat the key.
Refer to the photos in this Knowledge Base article as you go, but, hopefully, this will help you understand the photos a little better.
    Good luck!

  • Left shift key just fell off

    Hello,
My left shift key (Dutch keyboard, small shift key) fell of and I cannot get in back. It keeps falling of. It looks like a small pin at the back of the key broke... strange.
Can you tell me how to get an new one? My apple will only order a complete keyboard set.
    Regards,
    Thomas

    Thomas,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Keyboard parts are not sold separately. If you want to get a working keyboard you will probably have to replace the complete keyboard. BTW this is the case with every keyboard manufacturer I've run across for the past 20+ years.

  • Jelly fell off Macbook keyboard?

So about a year ago my V key just fell off and the hinge was broken so I couldn't put it back on. So then I just used it without the cover and just had that little jelly thing....the squisy knob.
    Now THAT fell off.
I can still push the V key but it's harder and takes about 3 tries.
What can I do about this?
    PLEASE HELP!

I'm very sure that if bought the MBA from Apple oran Apple Retailer you would get pretty quick satisfaction.  I know both my lcal Apple Retailer and the downtown Apple store would provide me a new MBA right away.
I'd go back to teh folks that sold it to you as a starter.

  • Camera Button fell off

Received my Droid X 5th Aug.  Yesterday I started to take a picture and noticed the snap button missing. Now I have a choice pay $90 to receive another phone or not use my camera. AND if I send my phone in for replacement and it is decided the missing button is physical damage I will be charged $600. Im glad it was not the power button that fell off!!!!!
Can any one tell me where I can purchase a snap on button for the droid x (3week old) that does not cost $90-$600 dollars!!!!

I have been told that the upgrade 2.2 will have on screen button to take pictures.
Yes it does have the shutter button on screen.
As for the rep at the store, it sounds highly suspect that they would not take to time to look at the phone if you made a trip up to the store.  If they did not look at it I would have insisted that they do so, or speak to a manager.
Maybe the button fell off, maybe you dropped the phone and it popped off, we will never know for certain.  This is a case that should be settled in person at a corporate store.
As for threatening to take your business elsewhere because of this, good luck.  Sprint calls bad phone updates physical damage, T-Mobile has crap coverage area and won't stand behind their products, AT&T just sucks in general.

  • My Volume Up (F12) Key fell off of my keyboard and I don't know what to do.

I accidentally fell asleep while i was on my macbook pro and when i woke up my key fell off, I don't know how to fix it and i've tried forcing it back in but that doesn't work at all, Help?

    phineasfromla,
if your keycap doesn’t reättach, then it might have lost a bit of the plastic tab that keeps it secured on the key mechanism. If that’s the case, then you’ll need to hunt around on online auction sites for a replacement F12 keycap, since Apple doesn’t sell replacement keycaps separately.

  • Left Shift Key fell off

Hi guys, I don't know if this is such a weird issue but about two weeks or so ago, my left shift key fell off. I knew I couldn't snap it back on since one of the mini white clips on the upper side (back portion) of the key is missing.
Right now, I can put it back on the keyboard but it wiggles as I know it doesn't fit securely as it used to be. I wish I could take a photo of it and post it on here.
This should be covered by the generic 1-yr battery, right?

1-yr battery or warranty? The falling apart of keys may or may not be covered. There are various things that can happen to keyboards which are controllable by Apple, and the user. I would call AppleCare if you believe you didn't do anything that might damage the computer. A list of things that could include:
    1. Food
    2. Water
    3. Drink
    4. Walking by door jams without making sure the machine is inside a well padded notebook bag.
    5. Not paying attention to situations where the computer apparently overheats and shuts down on its own. Making sure that the machine has its display turn off when the lid is closed, and making sure that the battery is replaced if it is under the exchange program.

  • #3 key fell off

I dropped a book and it pried off the #3 key. Just the silver key fell off, the white hinge is still there and all the plastic things on the back of the key are still there. Any suggestions on how to put it back on?

    Hi gerry --
This Kbase article explains (and shows) how to replace the keys (called "key caps") on the keyboard of a PB G4. You should know, however, that it can be a little tricky, not complicated, just a little tricky to do it correctly. So, if you're near a friendly AASP or an Apple Store, you might try to bring it in there and see if you might prevail upon them to do it for you. Someone who knows how to do it from experience and has done it before, can make quick work of it for sure.
    Good luck.

  • Replacing a key, or a keyboard

About a month ago, I purchased a macbook pro 15" and one of the keys seem to not work properly, time to time, or one of the key easily comes off by just pushing it up when none of the others do. So if something hit the keyboard a bit hard, it comes off..
I have googled about this matter, and there was a few video about replacing a key on a macbook (not pro) and they seemed a bit older as well. And I was wondering would it be possible to just replace a key? Or will you have to replace the whole keyboard.
Lastly, do you have to, or can you do the fixing on your own by purchasing the keys on the net or from the apple shop? Or do you have to take it to the shop; if so, can they do it straight away? Or have to send your laptop away for a bit..
    Thanks,
    S.

I would suspect that Apple would replace the key as a courtesy even if the warranty has expired.
As per my post in the thread that I had noted above, it is very expensive to have the entire keyboard replaced.
"Apple considers the keyboard and the unibody as a single part. Therefore, it would be very expensive to replace a key. I do not think that your warranty would cover such a request.
For more information on the process involved, read the following link.

    Thanks for the star!
    Good luck!

  • The Shift key fell off...

Okay, so I got my MBP a couple of weeks ago. It's been awesome, but last night the Shift key just fell completely off. It still works fine etc, but the plastic cover is not there.
Is there a way to get a replacement key? Phone support is kind of lacking, so I'd much rather work it out online.
    ~ dave

I just talked to the phone support people about my MBP ctrl key. The guy told me that I would have to go the an Apple store, an authorized service/support store, or send my whole computer away for a week to get the key and then it would be sent back to me.
....so I'm going to the Apple store. It's so far away.... google maps sez: 60.6 mi – about 1 hour 10 mins
Le sigh. It's a part that could fit in a standard envelope, but I have to journey to the farlands or send away my baby.
