Replace Case Fan

I'm thinking of replacing, if not just cleaning, the default case fan in my Power Mac G4 (Sawtooth). What's the rated fan speed of the factory fan, or at least the airflow?

This is how I proceed:
1) Take out your original case fan and copy all the info off the label.
1A) lift one side of the label and put some WD-40 on the end of the shaft, then tape the label back on.
2) Google the original maker's part number \[the Sunon or whatever part number, not the Apple part number]. That should get you a specs page that show both the airflow in cfm and sound level in db.
You will probably also find the minimum order from the manufacturer is 10,000 parts.
3) Surf to a place that sells lots of fans and compare and contrast. I start here:
http://www.buyextras.com/120mmfans.html
look at the bearing type (for long life), the airflow, the sound level, and whether it is single-speed or adjusts the speed with a thermistor. If you find things you like, you can search other for fans with those parameters.
For talking numbers, the sound level in a typical large office is about 35 db, and the scale is logarithmic. \[That fan you linked above has great airflow, but at a whopping 45 db. That's LOUD!]
12 Volt fans have a red and a black wire for the input voltages. The yellow wire that sometimes is featured is an RPM output, which some computers can read to see how fast the fan is turning. You can safely ignore it.

  • Where can I get a replacement case fan for a HP Pavillion 180t

The case fan on my 5 year old HP Pavillion 180t has begun to make noise when running.  This is the fan mounted to the back of the case, drawing air over the CPU cooling stack. From what I can gather from the HP support site, this model is no longer supported. I need to know the specifics for the fan in order to find a replacement. I would hate to have to purchase another PC because a $20.00 fan was failing. Thanks

The rear mounted fan is commonly called the System Fan. As a reference, it's model number and pic can be found here.  The fan is a 3 wire 92mm x 92mm x25mm case can.  Amazon price is lower.

When the fan's 3-pin connector is plugged into (PC) motherboards, the yellow wire provides the fan speed (RPMs). In the event that I might use it at a later time, I usually cut off the yellow wire near the connector, and then tape the end of it.

  • Sawtooth Quieting Project: Fan Replacement - Specs on 120 mm case fan?

So I thought I'd look into potentially cutting down the noise from my Sawtooth by replacing the 120 mm case fan. So, I have three (hopefully short) questions on my mind about this:
    a) What are the specs on the original 120 mm case fan? All I can see is that it's manufactured by NMB.
    b) Would I have to do anything special to get a replacement fan to work? (i.e. getting around non-standard power connectors, etc.)
    c) If anyone's tried this before, are there any recommended fans out there I should look into?
    Thanks in advance.

That's something I ran into, too. You see recommendations for certain types of really good fans but you cant find them in local stores.
This is what I did to quiet down my noisy Mac(after this thing was running for about half an hour it was just intolerable to be in the same room with).
I replaced the fan in the power supply. This is about the most difficult thing to do but the noise reduction was immense. This is a 80x80x25 mm fan and I put in a Thermaltake I bought at a PC shop.CFM (37)is lower than what was in there but the air coming out is barely warm.
I replaced the case fan with a Coolermaster ( forget the model)that is much quieter too.Look for a 120 mm fan, take the old one with you to check the size/thickness.
Then I hooked the case fan and the CPU fan ( this is a Quicksilver) up to something to regulate the voltage.I'm using a Radio Shack/ The Source power adaptor that can output either 12v,9V,7.5V, etc with a little switch on the unit.
I also opened up one of the PCI slot cover to let a little more air in.
Instead of running the fans at their rated 12v,I use the adaptor to run them at 9v.The noise reduction is dramatic, the unit does not get hot inside ( when I was testing, I opened it up and touched the heatsink every half hour or so, not hot at all). And you can always flip it back to 12V to run the fans at full speed anytime you want.
This is works great for me, it might not work for everyone if you're not comfortable with working inside power supplies ( potentially dangerous, do some reading on this first)or messing with Apple's precious fans. But I'm talking a 2/3rds noise reduction here with less than $50 worth of parts!
I didnt replace the CPU fan ( yet) because the replacement I bought was actually noisier than the stock one.Smaller fans tend to produce the most annoying noise, the larger the fan ,less irritating the sound.Find a local PC store that sells parts and has a decent return policy.Anything 12V will work in a Mac regardless of which sizes you buy.
Decent fans have the specs clearly marked on the box.Dont get too hung up on CFM ratings.I've found that certain fans are quieter than other regardless of CFM and Noise claims and you just have to try them out in your Mac to find the one you can live with.Luckily , we're talking about cheap parts here and the biggest hassle is dealing with Apple's dinky fan connectors. I just cut them off and splice..red to red, black to black.
If I was running major heat sources like 2 Ghz CPU upgrades or 256 MB+ vid cards, I might think twice about under-volting the fans, but I'm not. This Mac is primarily for music production and recording and I need it to be quiet, otherwise it is useless to me.
Dont be afraid to get in there and replace/fiddle with those fans. The results can be dramatic and very pleasing to your ears.

  • I replaced the case fan on my XPS 8700 and things are much quieter.

I added a new case fan to one of our 8700s.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006ISKYPE
    Pro's - it is quiet
Con's - the color scheme is ugly, but I'm the only one that looks inside my case so it doesn't bother me.
The system is noticeably quieter as this rear case fan is much quieter than the OEM case fan.
With an updated PSU and graphics card, the only sound after boot is is the CPU fan, and the occasional clunk from the HDD.
The aftermarket PSU (Seasonic x-650) fan doesn't spin until it gets hot -- which is never so it is silent.
The graphics card fans (MSI GTX 760 TF) are very quiet.
Now, on to a quieter CPU cooler if that is possible with the Dell MoBo.

You can also go here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=/onlineassistant/submitAQuestion.vm&s... and submit a service request and just complain through that route.  Use the link NOT to service your lappy but to complain and make them do more work to contact you and send out a box and ship them back nothing, LOL - waste their shipping money.
Oh hey, maybe this is where you send the pile of dog poo.

  • Case fan replacement

Could someone please tell me the mm size for my pavilion series 6000 pc computer case fan. (3 prong)

Here is how to measure a fan.   The fan RPM should be at least 1000 RPM minimum.
Now for the insane and complex.  The best I can recommend is that you use this program,  CPUID HWMonitor to actually find your fan rpm.  FANIN1 is the rear fan. A low RPM fan will trip the fault sensor. You'll need to run the program, and then stress the system to bring the fan up to higher speed.

  • Qosmio X500-11Q - How to replace cooling fans?

    Hi,
I'd to know if i can replace processor fan. It makes a lot of noise, and overheating.
Any reference or tips please ?

    Hey buddy.
In order to get access to the cooling modules, the whole notebook needs to be disassembled. :(
This is very tricky procedure since there are too many screws and parts which need to be removed.
I didnt find any disassembling manuals for download on the Toshiba European driver page I assume such docs are accessible for technicians only so I would no recommend trying to disassemble the notebook without having such guides.
Are you sure that your cooling module is faulty? Maybe there is dust and debris which affects the cooling fan functionality use compressed air spray which would helps to remove the dust in my case it helped

  • Case fan Vs. Slot fan blower

So im looking for something a little bit quiter to cool my computer. My fan right now runs at 38dB. I was looking at some slot fan blowers on ebay thinking about buying one... But im not sure if the slot fan blower will replace my exhisting fan or if it is just an add on item... so the question is can a slot fan blower replace a stock case fan?

That is a bigger fan so it can move more air with less noise, but it needs a 5.25 inch dive bay. The only one on your Mac is used by the optical drive, and even if you removed that, you would have to cut up the front panel to use the fan.
Making an older Mac quieter takes some work. You have to replace all the fans with variable speed fans controlled be temperature sensors, and locate the sensors carefully. The other option is to replace the fans with higher quality models (such as Pabst) with the same voltage and airflow specs. They will be a bit quieter.

  • How do I fix my case fans??

I have two 80 mm case fans (12v). I was wondering what the allignment of the fans should be. Should These fans blow air INTO the case or should they SUCK OUT the air from the case. I currently use a 350 Watt CODEGEN PSU with a single fan which sucks air INTO the PSU and hence INTO the case. Problem with sucking air into the case is that a lot of dust gets into the cabinet. On the other hand, sucking air out of the case leaves lesser air for the CPU and NB fans to effictively cool the CPU and NB. Any sugestions??
I plan to overclock, but not right now. The temperatures at no load are as follows:
With Side Pannels Fixed -  CPU=51 Degrees Cel   System=44 Degrees Cel
Without Side Pannels (Open Case) -  CPU=43 Degrees Cel   System=41 Degrees Cel
    Is my comp overheating?
    Current Rig Config:
P IV 2.8c with HTT Enabled
    MSI 875P Neo-FISR Motherboard (BIOS ver 3.2)

ATI 9500 Pro 128 Mb DDR (AGP 8x / Fast Writes Enabled)
    Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum
    Pioneer 16x DVD ROM / Sony 52x CD-RW
80 Gb Seagate HDD 7200 RPM
    Codegen 350Watt SMPS

As mentioned in the other of your thread, you PSU is weak currently, so maybe when you get another PSU, it should be intaking air to the PSU and exhuast out from the rear.
Just always remember the rule of "Hot air rises and cool air falls" and you'll most probably know where the fans are to be placed. Next, you should always try to keep the same number of intake fans and exhaust fans to keep a good capacity of airflow within the chassis.

  • Why would they just replace the fans when it needs a new logic board?

Went to see a "genius" at the Apple store with my Week 12 MBP. Complained about excessive heat and it whining when unplugged, ever since I got it. He sent it off, three days later I got it back in the mail. But when I looked at the repair doc all it says is they replaced the "FAN ASSY, LT, M1" and also the "RT" one. So now I have two new fans (which worked fine before), and that's it. It still get hot enough over the F keys to burn my skin, and it still whines like a baby when unplugged.
All they have to do is look at the serial number (8612) to know it needs a new MLB, right? What do I do now, call them back and go through this all over again?
    MacBook Pro 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Went through the exact same thing with my week 17 MBP. The first repair came back with new power inverter and fan assemblies even though my noise was clearly coming from below the keyboard. The noise continued and if anything was actually worse so I was starting to regret ever sending the computer back in the first place. So I called again and sent it back in. This time, the laptop came back untouched and declared "within spec". Now I was really fired up. I told them I would use it for a week and if the problem continued it will come back. So back it went a third time and this time the logic board was replaced. I have to say, the difference is very noticeable and completely worth it in hindsight. I was almost ready to live with it and am so glad I did not. Be persistent and let them know you are prepared to send it in as many times as it takes.

  • K9a2 plat. v2. unable to change speed on my case fan

    Hi!
I just bough a 80mm case fan and I can't change it's speed using the BIOS or from within the OS using speedfan.
The fan in question is a Zalman ZM-F1 with a 3 pin connector.
The motherboard can detect the fan speed. (3000rpm, so it's registering it correctly) but I have so far been unable to change it's speed. I can't figure out why, since i have a 120mm no-name fan which it detects changes speed just fine.
The 120mm is connected to sysfan 1 (works)
    The 80mm zm-f1 is connected to sysfan2 (doesn't work)
I know that I can use a connector to the psu to perma-run the fan in silent mode, but the thing is that i want to be able to control the fan from BIOS (and OS). I can't figure out why i cant control the speed since the bios is able to detect it  Could this be a BIOS issue?
I've been trying to find something about this issue for myself but this is all i've managed to come up with so far :
In this link it's mentioned that some motherboards can't monitor the fan speeds. I'm however able to see the fan speed.. so why can't it be changed?  hmm..

They also have an eBay store. I checked out all the possibilities, including the one you were just given, and cwi was the best price-wise. For what I needed, same seller, the direct one linked above was less expensive than their eBay store.

  • Case fans control?

    hi,
Is it possible to control case fans (by changing pwm) under linux?
e.g. I have Zyxel 310 Nas and i can change fan speed by put number between 0-255 to specific file, like
    echo 180 > /sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-002e/pwm1
I want to write a bash script to control fans in dependence on actual temperature. e.g. Turn on a side fan when temperature on graphics card goes over 60*C. Or turn off all case fans when my PC is on idle - just powered on.
So i will be very happy if i can do some similar as at my zyxel. My mobo is Asrock Extreme4 970.
