Replace copied user folder

My mother's HD became currupted after a software update, I ran repair disk and it failed, tried to reinstall Lion in revcovery mode and it failed as well.  Now I have her computer in target disk mode to copy her user folder over to my computer.  I am going to erase and reinstall Lion.  Can I just "drop" this copied user folder back on to her computer? Or is there another way of going about it? Also, filevault is/was on for this user account.

Hey forum,
I recently change my hdd for my macbook and backup my user folder, now i wanted to drag it in and replace my new user folder, but i drag it in and it says mac os x is using it thus action cannot be complete. So forum, what can I do? Any troubleshooting ways?
Try dragging individual folders within the saved user folder to the new user folder. There are some files, such as in "yourhomefolder"/Library/Preferences, that you won't be able to replace that way. Start with folders at the top of your user folder. For ones that you can't replace, open each one, then start moving files and folders within each one. You'll finally reach a point where you have a few files that you can't replace. Move them onto the Desktop, then move the saved files into the user folder. Once you reboot, you'll be able to trash the files on the Desktop.

  • How To Copy User Folder/Application Folder To Fresh Drive

I have a friend's iMac G5 whose hard drive went south. Fortunately I was able to copy its contents onto an external firewire drive before it totally lost its data. I installed a new hard drive in the iMac and put on a fresh copy of Leopard and iLife '80 - using my friend's same name for the user folder. Migration Assistant won't see the folder as it is on a connected but not bootable drive. So I need to manually drag over her data but I am concerned about just how to do this in a way that won't put me (and her) in "permissions agony." What's the best way to do this? Her system was running Tiger 10.4.11.
Plus the same is the case for her old applications folder. How can I get all that including the files that go into various libraries. Migration assistant would be so wonderful as it handles all that stuff...any help with this part also?
    Thanks in advance.

I was able to have a fairly successful conclusion to my dilemma. I had copied her information using Retrospect's Duplicate function and all her data was copied onto a firewire drive. This was done as her drive was going south before it totally deteriorated. I made a new administrative user with a slightly different user name (adding a 1 to her name) and copied all the user folder data over. Then I deleted the original user (and the 1 on her new user name) and was left with all her stuff in good shape with no permission problems that couldn't be taken care of with Disk Utility. Of course the Applications folder was one I didn't bother with because of how so many applications install things all over the place, preferences, application support folders, etc.; but, after a reinstall of most of her applications, things to seem to be working quite well. A few of her applications that I had no install for, I copied over successfully from her old application folder itself. Not bad.
I bought a Time Capsule for her use and am backing up that way for her...as well doing a Super Duper incremental back also onto the Time Capsule.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can't copy user folder to new user (account)

I tunes would no longer open-- would only lock up with the beach ball spinning when I tried to boot it. Mac Genius said that the software was corrupted and need to create a new user. Here's what he said to do which i did...
At the suggestion of Mac Genius... I copied my whole user folder to an external harddrive. Then I created a new user. Logged in under the new user and deleted the old user. Then (logged in under the new user) I copy the user folder from my external hard drive to the system drive. It gets almost competely done copying and then gives me an error message that it can't be copied. I can't put the exact error message right now (at work) but can post it later. Any suggestions on this? This is keeping me from running i-tunes as well as moving forward with several projects.
At this point I am just thinking another trip to the Mac store...

    Hi Micah,
Where you trying to copy the whole User folder into your Home folder or into the Users folder?
Did you do any Disk maintence first?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • My user data ( music, movies, et. al.) take up too much space to fit on my SSD. How do I use the user folder I've copied to my new iMac's hard drive?

As above. I can use Migration Assistant to move my account from my old machine, but the data are far too extensive to fit on the solid state drive. I copied my user folder over to the new hard drive, but how do I access its contents? More accurately, how do I set the folder on the hard drive as my default storage space?

Can I simply copy over the users folder from 10.3.9?
I have a feeling this will not work....?
Better to do it with Migration assistant, or just grab specific things I need, such as pluggins I installed for my audio applications such as Protools & Logic Audio...

Here's an alternative from Niel:Copying Over an Account to a different Volume
Copying an Account directly by dragging or by cloning will not change the NetInfo information needed for the Account to be properly recognized.
    To properly set up NetInfo
*Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts
    *Click on padlock and authenticate
*Click on plus sign under Login Options to add a new account.
*Set up an account and check box to allow user to administer.
*Log out of current account and log in to new Admin account
*Connect computer (Host) to computer with account to be transferred (Target) via Firewire ports.
*Start Target computer and hold down “T” key immediately after chime to mount HDD on Host computer desktop via Firewire Target Disk Mode
    * Drag Home folder from Target Disk to Users Folder on Host and rename it. (If you get an error message about permissions when doing the copy, click button to Authenticate and enter your password; alternatively, you can turn permissions off for the source disk in the Get Info window.)
*Switch names between copied Folder and Home Folder (with house icon) by putting 2 after Home Folder name, and naming newly copied Folder with account name (original home folder name).
*To see that copied folder is owned by the account that is logged in select folder and Get Info (Command + i), then go to Ownership & Permissions.
*Log out of account by going to the Apple Menu and selecting Log out Account Name (Command + Shift + Q)
    *Log back in to account.
*If the account was successfully copied, you may uncheck Allow User to Administer option in Apple Menu/System Preferences/Accounts if you choose.

  • Copying Library folder in User folder to external drive

In addition to my Time Machine backup, I have always kept an additional copy of the contents of my user folder on an external USB drive. Tried to do this for the first time since updating to Snow Leopard and copying fails when it gets to the Library folder with a message that I don't have permission to copy this folder. With Leopard this always worked, but not anymore, anyone know of a solution, also is there actually any purpose in backing up that particular folder?

Does your external drive have any ownership flags for the folder you are copying to?
    Check out BATCHMOD try www.macupdate.com
Also do Get info on the external drive; on the folder you want to copy to, my guess is that 10.6 has changed something.
For synching a backup of user account(s) I would turn to a program, like SuperDuper, to keep current and let it handle these kind of issues, and great program for $29.
I use SD to copy (clone) the entire account, but ~/Library has email, prefs, bookmarks and all kinds of things you find handy to have backed up.

Theoretically, yes, but I'm not 100% sure.
Like I said in my previous post, I would just drag over the data in your User folder and save yourself the headache. Plus, I'm not sure if copying over an entire Tiger User folder to a Leopard machine will a) work, and b) is the best idea.

  • Cannot copy iTunes folder from Windows to Mac because of Permission

I have my iTunes library on a windows machine, running windows 7. The library is organized inside the iTunes folder.
I am trying to put this same iTunes onto my new macbook pro. I tried copying the folder to an external HD and plugging that into my mac. When I tried to just copy the iTunes folder to the Mac HD I got:
I messed around with the permissions in Windows, but I couldn't get it to change. I tried everything I could find in the security tab for the disk and the permissions on the folder.
I decided to try and see if iTunes could just do it itself. So I replaced it itunes library (which was blank) on my Mac with that of my windows. I then opened a song, and followed the promt to locate it. iTunes found all my songs (on the external HD) just as you would expect. Now I tried to consolidate to get everything over to the mac. About halfway through i got this error:
So SOME of the songs and apps and books copied over but only about half and now it won't go any further. I went back to windows and tried to mess with the HD secruities again, but nothing worked.
One more note: when I open the HD on my mac it says "You have read access only" in the security tab. I know every other thread on this like suggests changing that but there is nowhere for me to do that.
    Can anyone help me?

I then opened a song, and followed the promt to locate it. iTunes found all my songs (on the external HD) just as you would expect.
That's not what I would expect if you copied the entire /iTunes/ folder to the new computer.
    Try this...
    Open a Finder window.
    Select Users/yourusernname.
    Right click - get info.
Scroll to the bottom (Sharing & Permissions).
Make sure you can Read & Write.
Click the gear icon at bottom and select Apply to enclosed items.
    Let it finish.
    Delete the /Music/iTunes/ folder.
Then  copy the entire /iTunes/ folder from the external to /Music/ on the internal.

  • Moving my wife's user folder to my MacPro while her iMac is in the shop

My wife's iMac needs to make yet another trip to the shop, and I was wondering about the best way to move her information to my MacPro while her computer is being serviced. We have TimeMachine backups and copies of her User folder. I tried a straight copy and ran into permission issues. I also tried restoring from her time machine back which was on an external drive but was unsuccessful. At a minimum she needs her email, desktop folders, documents folder, and Firefox and Safari data. In frustration I have deleted the initial user account I created for her. I was also thinking that I probably would not want to copy everything in her user folder because our hardware and software are not exactly the same, but then I would expect that hardware settings are not stored in individual user folders.

    William Martin, RM wrote:
I tried a straight copy and ran into permission issues.
    Try this:
    1. Make sure you have deleted any initial user account that you made for her on your Mac. (There should be no left over home folder with her original account's short name in your root level /Users/ folder or in a "Deleted Users" folder in that folder.)
    2. Using the Finder, copy her entire home folder from the copy you made to the root level /Users/ folder of your Mac. You should do this from an admin account & will have to click the "Authenticate" button in the warning dialog to get permission to modify the /Users/ folder. Enter your admin account name if it is not already there in the authentication window & that account's password.
    3. Create a new user account for her in System Preferences > Accounts, making sure you use exactly the same short name of that home folder for the *Account Name*, & to keep things simple also enter the same Password & Full Name her account on her Mac used. When you click the "Create Account" button, you should be notified that a home folder already exists for this account name & asked if the new account should use it. Reply that you do & the new account should be good to go.
Your wife should not have any significant problems using this account because of differences between the Macs. The worst that is likely to happen is some windows may open up in unusual positions or sizes, which can usually easily be corrected by just resizing or repositioning the window. For a few odd problems, it might be necessary to delete a related user preference file, but for the most part the OS will disregard inappropriate preference values & replace them with defaults suitable for the Mac it is running on.

  • Copy user data from Desktop HD to external HD

This is for a customer; I fix PCs and MACs for a living. Please answer all 3 questions below if you are able.
Old PowerMAC G5 has non-working mouse (i.e new mouse in different USB connector fails too) PLUS Other problems too. It does boot to an account with no login Password. However Login password for user account with admin privleges has been forgotten by customer. Customer wants to get a new MAC to replace G5.
So my job is to copy user data ONLY from PowerMAC HD to a NEW external usb HD for later copy to a MAC to be purchased later.. My plan is to use Target Disk to access the PowerMAC G5 HD (i.e G5 never boots with this approach; we are seeing G5 as it's HD ONLY.
So we have a MAC laptop in the middle running OS 10.4 or higher (unknown at the moment) and I connect via firewire cable and Target Disk to the G5 and ALSO connect the new usb external HD. It then use Disk Utility to reformat the external usb HD to Apple OS extended. And also wipe out all permissions on the external HD.
And then I drag and drop user home directories (and subfolders) from the G5 to the external HD.
HERE IS MY QUESTION: When I try to copy the user account with admin privleges which DOES HAVE A LOGIN PASSWORD OR the admin account home directories will OS X on the MAC laptop in the middle ASK ME FOR THE CORRESPONDING ACCOUNT PASSWORD or in some other way (PLEASE SPECIFY) get in the way VS just doing the copy ??
Because customer forgot the login password AND since mouse fails on G5, I cannot use an OS X install CD to wipe out the account password by booting from OS X Install CD etc etc.
SO IF THE MAC IN THE MIDDLE ASKS FOR THE LOGIN PASSWORD I am dead, I have no way of backing up the customer's data, can only back up from the user accounts with NO login password.
    (2) I am also wondering if the MAC laptop will object to copying the home directories for user accounts with NO login password.
    (3) And if the MAC in the middle objects or asks for passwords PLEASE PROVIDE A WORKAROUND if you know one. Please provide step by step instructions or a link to same as my MAC knowledge is much inferior to my PC knowledge and I probably can not "fill in the blanks"
    Mike

You will be asked to provide an administrator password for the computer you're working at during the copying process. The login passwords for the accounts aren't needed to copy the data, but if any account is protected by FileVault, that account's password will be needed to decrypt it.
For example, if you're on a computer which has an administrator password of '1234' and are trying to copy the home folder of an account for which the password is '5678', you'll need to provide '1234' to copy the home folder, but not '5678'. Opening that account's FileVault-protected disk image home folder will require '5678'.
Additionally, if the numeric UIDs of the accounts match, no password will be needed to perform the copy. This generally only applies to one account per computer, and is independent of account passwords.

  • Automator Mountain Lion 10.8.2 trying to copy/paste folder

    I got a folder which we'll call:
    Macintosh\users\OlsonBW\Documents\folder1
and I want to user Automator to copy the contents of "folder1" and past it into
    Macintosh\users\OlsonBW\Desktop\folder1
How do you do that in Automator? I see how to copy the folder. I don't see how to paste it using Automator and I want it to replace, without asking, the whole contents from Documents\folder1 to Desktop\folder1
Note that I want to do this over and over (a quick and easy backup for developing something) with an icon on my Mac desktop. Basically I want to see if something works. If it does, I want a quick and instant backup of that (I also use Time Machine but I'm not always at home and I'm fine if I write over anything as I can always retore from Time Machine when I get back home.
So ... anybody know how to do this? No I don't want to buy or use another program. If you don't know how to do this with Automator just skip on to the next question on the boards. I'm not trying to be rude. I'm just trying to save both of us time. Thanks in advance.
PS: Why doesn't Automator have its own board? I would use this utility a lot more, 1) If it was easier to use, and 2) If I could find things in one place instead of having to search for Automator each time plus whatever I'm looking for.

Looking at the thread again, they maybe Automator scripts. I can struggle my way through an Apple script, but still haven't figured out Automator.
Here is an Apple link to Automator 101:

  • HD failed, access User folder urgent!

    Hi everyone!
Here is my problem: system once froze after waking from sleep, rebooted it, never worked again. A forbiden sign appears when i rebooted it.
    Things i tried:
    - Snow leopard installation disk: disk utility reports bad sectors, cannot repair.
    - Manage to create a partition and install ubuntu, can mount the drive but cannot see my folder inside Users\ ... So no access to my Desktop etc... old data. If i do it in the terminal as superuser i can see my user folder but once i try to access it, it gives a cannot access input\output error. I find it hard to belive that all my data is in bad sectors obviously...
    - Disk utility alias in ubuntu also reports bad sectors.
    - tried to use the terminal in the snow leopard installation cd but drive is not present in the Volumes\ ... can see Linux partition clearly though...
I now want to return the computer to Apple cuz it is not one year old yet!!! My first mac and so many troubles.... argh!
Any chance of recovering the data?
My bet would be some way of overriding protection and see the folder in linux.
    OR
Maybe reinstall leopard, although probably it will ask for formatting the drive.
    OR
Maybe apple can do it once i return it to repair... they should, a one yr old computer shouldn't give HD problems!!! :((
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Cheers

If you don't have your data backed up elsewhere, it may be too late to do so now. The lesson to take from this experience is that you should back up when everything is working perfectly instead of waiting until the sky falls.
Don't take the computer to Apple to have the drive replaced under warranty until you've recovered any data that can be salvaged from it, as I describe below. If you take it to Apple now, Apple will remove the old drive and keep it, with all your data on it.
STOP installing things on the failed drive. If its directory is among the things on it that have been damaged, anything you write to the disk may irrevocably overwrite data that you hope to recover, but have been unable to access up to now. Instead of continuing to muck around with the drive and putting your data at further risk, download the free trial version of one or more of these data recovery utilities and let it show you what data, if any, is recoverable from the failed drive:
    Data Rescue III
    FileSalvage
    VirtualLab
Do not install any of them on the failed drive. Install them on a bootable external hard drive large enough to hold all the data you hope to recover. If any of them indicates that it will be able to recover the files you need, buy the full version and use it to copy the files from the failed drive to the external. All data recovery utilities operate without changing anything on the drive from which the files are being recovered, so you know you can't be destroying any other information in the process. Good luck.

  • Notes lost after copying Addressbook folder

When I copy the Addressbook folder from home/library/application support/addressbook to the same place in my other Mac running the same version of Tiger (10.4.8), all the Notes disappear. Is there any way to preserve them?
    iMac G5; iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Except for images, AB stores all its user data in the file ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook.data. The images are stored separately in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Images. (Actually, the images may be duplicated in AddressBook.data, but I don't think so).
So, if your notes are disappearing, it must be something wrong on the target mac. You could try several things to test it. For example, on the source Mac, move the AB folder to one side and replace it with the one from the target Mac. If the notes re-appear, the data is there but just not showing. Alternatively, on the target mac, use script editor to try the script below. Replace "Book Man" with the name of an actual contact that should have a note and run the script; the note should be displayed in the editor's result pane.
I presume you quit AB on both machines before copying the folder?
    AK
click here to open this script in your editor<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:400px">tell application "Address Book"

  • Outsource User Folder to NAS

I want to do something what I suppose should be something I might not be the only one interested in - but I haven't found a proper solution in any forum how to realize it. It's the following:
Outsource my complete user folder (users/myname) from my Local Harddisk to my NAS so it is automounted via Network at startup.
I have a Synology DiskStation which supports SMB and AFP and I want to connect via SMB or AFP.
I have been trying around with AutoFS but was not successful yet. My current auto_master file look like this:
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master            # Use directory service
    /net                    -hosts          -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home                   auto_home       -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers        -fstab
    /-                      -static
    /-                      auto_smb
-> I have added the bottom entry which redirects to the auto_smb entry which looks like this:
    /users/myname -fstype=smbfs ://admin:[email protected]/myname
This entry replaces the existing home folder with the one on the NAS.
When I restart, it gives me the error message that I don't have the necessary permissions.
Replacing only specific subfolders of my user folder (e.g. downloads, movies) works perfect - but replacing the whole user folder does not work.
Would be great if anybody could help me with this problem.

Assuming you get successfully connected to the library files on the NAS, you may well find that performance suffers. To resolve this copy the files iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel (hidden) and the folders Album Artwork and Previous iTunes Libraries, back into <User>\Music\iTunes (delete any temporary empty library that was made there earlier) then use the option-start-iTunes method to connect to that copy of your database.
Any time you want to move the library to a new drive or machine copy those files & folders back out to the iTunes folder on the NAS, then use the option-start-iTunes method to open that copy of the database one time (on the current machine) before the move. This ensures that iTunes will be able to locate the files correctly from any new location. You can then repeat the process of moving the database to an internal or local external drive for performance.
