Replace Disk RAID 5 with hot spare disk form old disk

i'm going to replace a failed disk form server Proliant SL360 G5 and using RAID 5 with a disk has been used from older server.
my question is there any side effect in RAID 5 on server that has been replace from a failed disk with the old disk?

Hello @Oktandri,
I understand that you are replacing a failed disc on your Proliant Servier and are wondering if there are any side effects that you should be aware of. I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure, I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums, since this is a commercial product. Install iTunes.
Once install, hold SHIFT and launch iTunes.
When prompted, point iTunes to the correct location for the iTunesLibrary.itl file which should be in the iTunes folder under <user>/Music on the old drive.

  • HP ProLiant ML110 G7 Intel Xeon E3-1220 RAID 1 with hot swap configuration

    Dear All;
Am going to purchase 'HP ProLiant ML110 G7 Intel Xeon E3-1220' server partnumber '470065-591'. I want to know little more about its RAID controller. The above mensioned server having only two 500GB HDD. I want to configure RAID 1 on it and i want to add one more HDD 'HP 500GB 3G SATA 7.2K 3.5in MDL HDD' as hot swap for the RAID 1. here are my questions
    1) it support RAID 1
i checked on few blogs. then i confirm I can configure RAID 10 with two HDD. so it will work same as RAID 1.
    2) it will suport hot swap
actually first time am going to install RAID. Thats why am asking these questions.

    Hi:
I recommend you also post your question in the HP Business Support Forum -- ML Servers section.

  • Maximum safe fill for Raid-5 without hot spare?

What is the percentage of total capacity that can be used while still maintaining security blanket of the RAID-5 parity data?
I have two 7-drive arrays, neither include a spare, and simple logic suggests that the total data should not exceed the formatted capacity of six of the seven drives. Is it possible that six drives could manage, say, six-and-a-half drives worth of data via parity data, in the event the seventh drive fails?
    Various G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In addition to William's comment re utilization, the maximum space you can get from a 7-disk RAID 5 volume is 6 drives-worth.
That is, seven 500GB drives results in 6 x 500GB usable space, or 3,000 GB. It is not possible to extend the usable space into the seventh drive.
In RAID 5, all data is spread across all drives in the array, so there isn't actually a spare drive, or a single parity drive. RAID 3 uses a separate parity disk, but even in that configuration you cannot use space on the parity drive as user data because it's little more than a 1:1 map of the blocks on the data drives - any data on the parity space is interpreted as the parity data for the corresponding blocks on the other drives. If you stored real data in that space it would totally hose the corresponding data on the user-space disks.

  • Replace Super Raid adaptor with standard SSD.

Hi there, I have a GT70-0NE-UK and the 750GB normal hard drive died on me a few weeks ago, which I've replaced with a 500GB SSD.  I noticed the SSD that came with the laptop is on an adaptor card and that there was no normal SATA connectors with it.
So my question is, is there a way to be able to use a standard, larger capacity, 2.5" SSD where the current raid adaptor is?  I tried searching the forum, but not sure I found anything relating to this.
I'm in the UK, so I'd have no idea where to order parts from.  Had the laptop for over two years (which is why I opened it up when other HD died).
    Thanks for any help,
    Scott.

  • Securing old 10.4 xserve with hot spare - new xserve does not boot with 10.

    dear you,
I am in the murky situation of having to secure a single, non redundant productive scenario which is running on one xserve (model identifier 1,1; dual core 3GHz; boot-rom XS11.0080.B00). due to several reasons the server needs to be cloned, so that a separate xserve with a daily cloned boot-device can take over if things go south with the productive one.
unfortunately the newly bought xserve quadcore single 2.26GHz refuses to boot from the image taken from the production machine. tried to downgrade firmware, did not help. new machine crashes during startup (empty grey screen).
anybody knows any help? moving the production machine to 10.5 or newer is NO option.
an option could be two elder xserves I have here additionally. how do I find out which xserve model will boot with an image from the production server?
thank you all for any idea in advance,
    thaijay

Sorry, failed to let you know the productive server is running 10.4.11. please let me know which other details I can post/will help us with this issue

This is never going to work via cloning.
The server you're cloning has to be one of the original Intel-based XServes. Each successive revision adds requirements to the OS to the point where they have a minimum OS version. In the case of the latest generation servers, they won't run on anything earlier than 10.5.6 (IIRC). To put it simply - 10.4 doesn't know how to drive the latest generation hardware.
In any case, cloning is rarely a good idea for servers anyway. You would do better to look at the services you're running and look at backup/failover plans for them rather than trying to clone the entire server. Many services such as Open Directory, DNS, MySQL and more have built-in replication systems that are designed to replicate their data across many machines. Other client-facing services such as AFP, web, FTP, etc. can be set to failover (where the second machine takes over the service when the primary machine fails).
Such replication/failover techniques are far more reliable than a daily clone, and they're also faster. Replicated data could be maintained up to the minute, compared to a day old data if you need to boot up the clone.
If you really, really want to go the clone route, then reverse the roles - setup the new machine as the primary server with all the services and clone this machine to create your failover system. 10.5.6 will run the old/original XServe, it's just a matter of updating your services to the newer version.

In my Solaris 10 RAID-5 volume, metastat shows the hot spare in use, but all the disks' state is Okay. Why is this? Thanks for the suggestion. Tried "metahs -e ...". "Hotspare isn't broken, can't enable".
Tried "metareplace -e ...", "d10: device ... enabled" It's currently in sync'ing mode. I guess drive 380 was pulled out and reinserted at one point without issuing the metareplace command.

  • Can you run RAID 5 + Hot Spare on ix4-200d, or just RAID 5?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello trevorsem
The ix4-200d would only be able to do RAID 5.  Hot spare would not be an option.  You could technically use only 3 disks in the RAID 5, but it would not be using the unit to it's best ability.
PX class devices can use hot spares with RAID 1, 5, 6, and 10

  • Mirrors & Hot Spares

    Relativley new to Solaris 10.
I have 5 identical disks (75GB) on my system and I have the following setup:
    disk1: /
    disk2: /data
disk1 is mirrored to disk3, disk2 is mirrored to disk4. I managed to get the mirroring done first time, however what I would like to do is have some sort of automated process to have the 5th disk (disk5) substitute in for any other disk that fails.
I guess it is something to do with Hot Spare Pools but I am not sure where to start with it.
I did all the mirroring with command line tools (metainit, metattach, etc...).
If anyone can please point me in the right direction that would be appreciated.

This may seem a silly question but have you checked the Sun online docs at:
    <http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-4520/6manpielm?a=view>
which seem to pretty good at describing how to set up the hot spares and then associate them with slices.
    cheers

  • 300 GB disk as hot spare for 146 gb disk in stk 6140

    Hi,
Does any body know this for sure?
Customer plans to buy new tray with 300 gb fc disks.
Also hey have old tray with 146 gb disks.
They want to assign two 300 gb disks as hot spares for old 146 gb and for new 300gb disks.
    Will it work?
If you can confirm that this works, does this depends on firmware revision or CAM version or something else?
    Thanks in advance!

I have not seen this work but It's my understanding that hot spares are "array spares" and that a larger drive can be a spare for a smaller drive.

  • Installing Maverick on a MacPro with OS 10.7.5 and using RAID 1 with 2 * 1TB disks. 50% used.

I have a MacPro with 2* 1TB disks running Mac OS 10.7.5 using a RAID card running RAID 1. 50% space used.
How can I install Maverick safely (i have a Time Machine Backup). The install will not use the RAID set as a boot volume.
Reading the RAID manual there is discribed a way to create a bootabkle partition and RAID 5. But it starts out as a newly purchased configuration.
I have a used configuration. I would like to reuse the data.
Is there an installation section for my type of configuration?
    THKS for all help.
    Regards
    Reint

I have found the answer myself already.
    1.     Take a full backup on a medium which also will restore.
    2.     Start your system with original start-up DVD.
    3.     Start RAID pgm. Dissolve your current RAID set.
    4.     Create a new RAID set with a logical volume on it.
    5.     Restore from your backup your current system.
    6.     Install Maverick on this system.

  • Snow Leopard Won't Install Even With Replacement Disk

I got my original Snow Leopard, that I bought at Apple, a week ago. I went through the whole installation process, and about halfway through, it restart and ejected the disc. After that the disc wouldn't read. So I got support from Apple and they sent me out a replacement disk that I got today. I start installing and the EXACT same thing happens again. Any ideas on what the problem is? And yes, the disc drive is working fine.

Make sure that at least 1 GB of memory is recognized in System Profiler with status "OK" -- it is possible that some of your installed memory is defective or not properly seated. Since Snow Leopard requires at least 1 GB, your MacBook won't start up from the DVD if can only use less than this amount.
Also consider running the Apple Hardware Test and/or Kelley Computing's Rember on your MacBook, especially if you have replaced any of its original memory with third party parts.
Because Snow Leopard is more demanding of memory performance than Leopard & has a higher minimum requirement for memory size as well, sometimes slightly out-of-spec memory modules will work fine with the earlier OS version but not with the later one.
