Replace edit question

Working in Tom's book, pg 66, FCE 3.5, Replace Edit.
I understand that there must be enough frames in the Viewer in front of the Playhead. Suppose that I need to know that there must be at least 12;27.
Since the Viewer shows only total duration of the clip, and the position of Playhead, I guess that the only way to know how much lies in front of the Playhead is to figure out the math manually (ie, Duration minus Playhead)?

As clips in FCE don't show timecode, if the playhead is after 12:27 in the viewer there's a media in front of the playhead.

Actually, i am not able to find the font name for these kind of symbols (like trade mark or Registered) and also, i am fetching the data from database and them printing on PDF (like a standard process). This trademark symbol is in database.

Apostrophes are replaced by question marks in output string?

Hi Guys
I think this is an encoding problem but I cannot find it in the forum archives. My apostrophes are being replaced by question marks on my jsp output?
Any idea why and how to get them back to apostrophes

Were you referring to the normal applications that are available for viewing data for the database (like SQL*Plus or Enterprise Manager?)
If yes, then if it was me then I would presume it was not an apostrophe and that the third party tool was mapping the real character to an apostrophe. A 'square' indicates an unusual character in viewers.
Are you using EBCDIC? Unless EBCDIC is involved apostrophe has the same value in most if not all character sets because ANSI forms the lower range for most character sets. I know for example that Korean, Japanese and Chinese character sets use ANSI, as does unicode (with padded zeros for the wider ranges.)

When i open emails, the text is replaced with question marks and boxes

i have a macbook pro and when i open email attatchments which are mainly bodys of text, the text is replaced with question marks in boxes, any ideas as to how to help this or even fix it completely!?

It means the text is a font not supported by whatever you are using

Stacks replaced with question marks. Why?

I made several stacks with Apple and 3rd party applications. After the mac was awakened from sleep mode, the stacks were replaced with question marks. Anyone know why? and how this can be avoided?

I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I listened to the Apple Rep. He told me to make a folder on the desktop, put in the aliased apps and put it as a stacked folder on the Dock. Wrong!!! This folder has to be made as a subfolder of the Documents folder. Then this folder holding the aliased filed is dragged to the Dock. The reason is simple. Whatever folder is made on the Desktop and put on the Dock as a stacked folder leaves a copy on the Desktop. When this is Trashed and the Trash bin is emptied, so is the stacked folder. By dragging it from the Documents folder, nothing is left on the Desktop.

Can't Edit Question

When opening a Cap 2 file that already has slides and
quesions slides-- Selecting a particular question slide the "edit
question" button below the timeline is "flashing" and cannot be
selected. I think I have heard of this before with a
workaround/fix. Please remind me!

some reason, this makes the "edit question" area flash on my

PRE 7.0 Capture, Conforming & Editing Questions

I have a new Canon Vixia HFS100 (AVCHD) and have just installed Premiere Elements 7.0.   I previously used a Standard Definition mini-tape camcorder and edited the videos with either Windows Movie Maker or Cyberlink Power Director.
Capture Questions: The AVCHD media import option does not require a fire wire / nor does it provide device control. (I LIKE this feature since I purchased a camcorder with flash memory cards so that I could import the media through a card reader instead of having to hook up the camcorder.) I realize now, however that I may also want to import a small segment from a longer scene. Should the AVCHD capture feature have device control? If not, can I also use the HDV camcorder capture function instead?   Does this require any adjustments to my project settings?
Conforming Questions: After I import the .mts files, PRE 7.0 automatically goes through a process that says it is 'conforming' the files.   What does 'conforming' mean? Does this require any adjustments to my project settings?
Editing Questions: The .mts scenes cannot be played back without SEVERE stutter.   Audio is fine, but the scenes video looks like individual stills with 10-15 second delay until the next still picture. Although I plan to upgrade from my 1 GB RAM laptop to a much higher powered laptop within the next month, I am despearate to edit and publish my first set of videos since they are sales videos of horses I am trying to sell. Is there anything I can do to allow me to edit the .mts files with my current 1 GB RAM system? I would be happy to drop to a lower quality video setting just to get this batch of videos edited and produced.

There are several threads on AVCHD conversion. Unfortunately, I do not recall the conversion utilities recommended. Not shooting AVCHD, I have to admit that I am personally clueless to what programs work, and how well. Others can likely help you there.
2. What configuration wish list can you recommend for either a Dell laptop or desktop?   I will be editing ~40 horse sale videos per month and posting them to YouTube or producing DVDs to mail to prospective buyers.
I have just the ARTICLE for that "wishlist." Harm Millaard is the "Hardware Guru," on the PrPro forum. He gives a lot of great info. Now, it's pretty much geared for the "ultimate" NLE machine, but he does give the reasons, so one can "tone it down" to suit their budget and their needs.

Replace Edit while preserving transition

Hi all,
I am trying to figure out how to replace a clip on the timeline with another clip.
The first clip already in the sequence has a transition on it.
Is there any way - besides copying the new clip and pasting attributes (content) to the old clip - to overwrite the new with the old while keeping the trasition?

well you could use the the replace edit function (F11)
position the playhead in the timeline over the clip you want to replace.
load the replacement clip in the viewer
press F11
note that neither the clip in the timeline nor the clip in the viewer need or will reference and in or out markers. clip placement is dictated solely by the playhead position whereby the clip in the viewer will replace the clip in the timeline such that the playhead position is maintained

Single Edition questions!

Hi there,
I need an updated, quick and precise answers for these Single Edition questions...!
(1) For what I got until now Single Edition do not allow clients to publish a store like a bookstall of magazines. Is that right?
(2) That said, every app built and sent to App Store is "unique" and has no physical connection with other apps built and sent later. Right?
(3) Even though having Creative Cloud and being able to publish unlimited Folios... There is no way we can do a bookstall??
(4) Even using Html5 resources?

Why do I see things set differently in Advanced Actions (F9) than in each slide's Edit Question settings?

After spending 10+ hours of trying to figure out why my first two quiz slides did work, and my next eight didn't, I found the answer as an offhand, btw, comment. The expected action was On failure, Jump to Slide x, which would jump back to the beginning of that content "section." (Quiz slides (two per section) are interspersed with sections of content slides). I finally ran across the advice to "save yourself time" by using F9 to see Advanced Interactions (which is, what, a dialog? a view?). Turns out this was not just a time-saver but the ONLY way (that I've found yet) to see and fix my problem. In Advanced Interactions, I could immediately see that the first two slides were set as I thought, (Jump to Slide upon failure), but the rest were set to Continue upon failure. This, EVEN THOUGH on every question slide, in Edit view/mode on the Edit Question > Options tab, it was set for Jump to Slide upon failure. Why did it appear that way in Edit Question > Options, but not in Advanced Interactions? I set them all correctly in the Advanced Interactions and now the jumping is working correctly (Now I have problems with questions not being reset, but I think I have seen the answers for that in my 10+ hours of reading forums and blogs.)

So according to studentdiscounts.com.au, an official Adobe UK FAQ and I found a post on this forum saying, you can use this suite to do commercial work (its the Student Edition that's cheaper, that you cant)
Licensing shouldn't be dramatically different in Australia should it?
Sorry, I'm just being overly careful. Been using Gimp and InkScape for a while, but getting excited about buying this suite :) Just replaced my old 80 gig HDD for a brand new WD 640 Gig HDD to make way for the suite :) Might grab another two gig of ram (to make 4 gig), soon too

well I called. And apparently there is conflicting information on the topic because licensing only changed recently.
But yes you can use it for commercial work in Australia (apparently. although it seemed like an off-sure call centre (which usually don't seem very definitive or educated on all matters), and the info he originally gave me was wrong, and I had to get him to dig a little deeper.)
PS: But I went ahead and ordered, should arrive in the next day or two :)

IMovie HD (6.0.3) - Export Quality and Editing Question

Hi guys, i wanted to ask two questions. The first is that i wanted to export videos to upload onto YouTube and the best format for this seems to be the CD-ROM format that is available on the version i have, the only thing is my videos still appear low quality and pixellated even though i am editing good quality videos......i was wondering if i was doing anything wrong/or can do something better?
Also, when i am editing, can i place logos or maybe pictures onto the video e.g. with TV channels they have a logo at the corner of the screen. I also wanted to black out text on screen but i don't seem to be able to do that.

QuickTime has never supported anything more than "playback" of MPEG-1 formats and conversions to QuickTime formats will never include audio.

iMovie 7 can import and convert most MPEG-2 formats (DVD and HD media) and include audio. It also uses QuickTime for the work.
MPEG Streamclip does allow "batch" conversions. Do them while you sleep.

Some characters are replaced by question marks!

All of a sudden my iMac (OS X 10.5.1 Leopard) is displaying question marks for some special characters.
For example, on internet, look up a word "pediment" in Yahoo! Dictionary ( http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/pediment)... Instead of showing the "dot" symbol to identify a syllabus break, it shows question marks as ped?i?ment, and instead of showing c with a little squiggle underneath for a word facade (within the definition of pediment), it shows fa?ade.
I did not have this problem on my iMac on Tuesday (01/29/08) morning and I have not installed anything other than the Apple updates.
I tried with FireFox and Safari, and both show the same thing. Then I went and checked my husband's iMac (OS X 10.5.1 Leopard) and it has a same problem, so I know it is not just my iMac.
Then (yes, there is more...) I started to work on my Word document and tried to insert "symbol" from insert on the Toolbar... many of my symbol fonts (Symbol, Osaka, etc) has question marks replacing special characters.
Please help! I am unable to complete my work without these special characters!!

Well, I went to the Yahoo! Dictionary "Pediment" and it said it was set to Default which is set to Western (ISO Latin 1), so I assumed it was Western (ISO Latin 1). But when I click on Western (ISO Latin 1), the pages appear what it's supposed to look like with special characters... What does this mean?
I reset all the settings; I chose something else as default, quit Safari, opened it and chose Western (ISO Latin 1) as a default to see if it changes anything... No change. It says my default is Western (ISO Latin 1), but it seems not.
I am officially confused and have no clue what to do...??????!!!!!
On the bright side, at least I can get my work done, even if I have to change the encoding one page at a time... Thanks.

Apple iPod Nano replacement program - question

Hello, Apple community,
I have a question about the new replacement program of the iPod nano 1st gen.
The program doesn't state whether or not you get a refund or a new iPod nano (the small squared once with touch screen).
The program says that you'll get a replacement iPod Nano, but isn't very specific if it is the new generation.

I can say it is not a scam - Apple is definitely replacing the iPods. Once I read the article and went to apple.com, that proved it. Apple.com would never risk another class action lawsuit over this iPod.
My First Generation iPod was given to me at work for being the winner of a give-away drawing and about a year or so ago it overheated and erased all the info on the iPod. Now it will only charge and drain the battery. It no longer allows me to store any thing on it.
I am glad that Apple is doing this exchange. I thought I was just out of luck and was glad I had not paid full price for it. I love my Nano and used it constantly!!!
Just send your's in using the box and label they send you and give them 6 weeks like the apple.com website says, Apple will make good on their product. Millions of people don't stand in line and wait weeks/months for their new products to arrive for no reason, trust me. Oh, by the way, I know this for sure.....I work for a wireless phone service that has been dealing with Apple for Yearsssssssssssss.....and every year the same thing. People will give anything to get a product with that apple on it.
