Replace G5 Dual 2 Ghz fan filters?

Recently I've noticed the fans running more than usual. I ran hardware test - no problems reported. Also cleaned inside the case, we get a lot of dust here and I noticed the (paper?) filters had some dirt on them, doing their job I guess.
I searched around and could not find any information about changing the filters (lots on fan noise though). Is changing the filters useful/necessary? If so, how?
Thanks
Geoff

Hi. You'd think they would fit some sort of filter with 9-10 fans sucking the dust in. Seem to remember someone in the Forum experimenting with a sheet of foam, the sort used for small engine air filters, but it would confuse the fan control - not being part of the design.
For cleaning I use a combination of microfibre cloths, small soft brushes and a can of compressed air - all the while keeping a big domestic fan blowing over it, to make sure the dust cloud settles somewhere else (outdoors or in the garage).
Good Luck.

  • No Chime, display or illuminated power button QS Dual 1 Ghz

Hi. I have a PM G4 Dual 1 Ghz. It was a great computer until about 2 years ago when it sadly stopped working. I found a broken capacitor on the motherboard (No. 820-1342-B) , so figured it was a bad MB. I replaced the board with a (No. 820-1276-A) board and had no luck. The symptoms-the same as on the new board. I purchased a tested and working board (No. 820-1342-B) and still had no luck. I am beginning to suspect a problem with my processor card or my power supply but I don't want to put any more money into it. I have tried to reset PRAM but the keyboard isn't recieving power. The symptoms: Power light when pressed in, red light on logic board, fans, hd, and optical drive work. No keyboard, display, or chime. Please help- I want to donate this computer and can't bear throwing it away

You never said if you replaced the PRAM battery.
I would check it first. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
For G4's and earlier models, check out things in Texas Mac Man's Battery, PRAM, PMU tutorial on the subject.
There are other tips in there too.

  • Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)?

    Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)
Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?
    Thanks very much.

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.
    Thank you.

  • Clean Install G4 Dual 1 GHz-Not enough Disk Space Error? -SLOW USB copies

    HELP puhleeeeze!
This seems to be an issue on various sites with no one being able to figure out what is the cause and a solution. One person stated his problem went away with a fullwipe and clean-reinstall of everything. But this is what I did already.
What is the reason for the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message when both my hard drives have gigs of space available. If I had hair I'd be pulling it out by now!   When trying to copy a file to my 2 internal hard drives that have a lot of space available, but only by the USB port?!!
I have a Power Mac G4 Mirrored Door (MDD) Dual 1 GHz with a clean install of 10.5.8 from the Original Mac OS X Leopard DVD. Both internal hard drives are 60GB and 100GB. The hard drives were wiped clean with Disc Utilities and reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The Power Mac only has the OS and a few music apps installed. Easily over 30 GB of space left on the the main G4 interal hard drive and about 75 GB on the other internal hard drive.
The error seems to only happen when I connect a USB flash drive to the USB port. I tried to copy a 50MB update to the desktop-"Not Enough Disk Space" error message happened.
I know that the G4 MDD Power Macs only have USB 1.0. Is this a USB 2.0 issue? Another issue is that it has very slow USB speed (dramtically slower than normal USB 1.0 copying of files. And this is only when it is successful. Is it a USB format issue? I know I couldn't get an external USB 2.0 drive to mount on the Power Mac at all. Disc Utilities could see it but it still would not mount. I have a friend who has an older G4 single processor Mac that doesn't experience these issues with its USB 1.0 ports.
    Now here's the kicker:
If I put in a CD disc in the DVD/RW drive, it copies with no problems to either hard drive. If I connect to the Power Mac  via the ethernet network, files can copy with no problems. But any USB connection -  I get a the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message. I know this is an old mac... but it's never been problematic until this latest wipe and update to Leopard 10.5.8.
Is there a solution to this? Any and all help, feedback, comments, thoughts are greatly appreciated in advance!!!

    Hello everyone,
Ok, I did the ultimate task. I erased the hard drives, AGAIN. Just to start fresh from scratch. Hard drives were erased. Did a new install of Mac OS 10.5. And all was well. I could copy with no problems. I gave the computer to my friend and all was good for a couple of days and then the issue came back again. He couldn't copy anything to his internal hard drives and we received the "Not enough disk space" error message! I was baffled. A complete hard drive erase 2 times, 2 fresh Mac OS 10.5 installs and it works for a few days and then coping to HD we got the same **** problem again! THEN - I remembered that the PRAM battery was dead on this G4 Mirrored-Door Dual 1GHz PowerMac. I had recommended that he get a new battery, because this computer would always have the incorrect date and time after every restart. So with recalling this, I had him reset the PRAM by holding down the CMD+OPT+P+R keys after a restart (start-up Chime). I had him hold the keys for at least 3 start-up-chimes. Soon as the G4 Power Mac started up everything was fine again. He was able to copy files to his hard drives again with the "Not enough disk space" error message.
So everyone! Try zapping your PRAM (resetting the PRAM) and see if this solves your problem. I told my friend to get a new PRAM battery to replace the old one that is completely dead. I have not heard back from him.  I will ask him again if the problem has come back.
If that fails: My only other solution would be to consider that it is possible that Mac OS 10.5 has a conflict or issue with the G4 Processors and maybe it is safer to install Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4. Because this problem only has occured after installing Mac OS 10.5, the highest version of the Mac OS the Dual 1GHz Mirrored-Door G4 can be installed.
    Cheers,
    B

  • I have a Powermac G4. When I bought it it was a dual 1 GHz. Now it says it's a dual 733 MHz. Bow weird is that?

I bought a dual 1 GHz in 2002. System profiler now says its a dual 733 MGz! How can.that happen?

    Hello Jayg00,
I had this problem recently, and I'm trying to remember just how I resolved it. I volunteer for a charity that recycles old Macs, so we get weird problems all the time and trying to remember exactly how I solve things can be a problem.
As I remember, it was a G4 Quicksilver that had had its memory and maybe its CPU updated...  and I think I diagnosed the problem by looking in the Apple Profiler at the top left under the Apple logo and finding that that not all the memory was being recognised... why this would cause the misreading was not clear, but I moved the memory into different slots and replaced some of it. Of course, I would have reset the logic board and the PRAM. I think maybe I replaced the thermal paste between heatsink and CPU, too.
Exactly what the problem was or what else I did that might have cleared it doesn't remain in my memory (sorry!), but I hope that helps.
    Regards... Jon

  • Noisy G5 (Dual 2 Ghz)

After my G4 with a lot of nois and a new fan that doesn't work, I now have a G5.
But he makes nois too, when I want to start something he begins to rattle...:(
    Some solution?
G5 Dual 2 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Happy Mac Man

If you open the silver side door (but leave the clear plastic deflector in place) and then open a program, does the "rattle" come from the rear of the G5, at the top?
If so, it is probably the hard drive accessing. Some drives are noisier than others, but if Disk Utility doesn't find any problems and the S.M.A.R.T. status is 'Verified' there isn't really much you can do about it...
This G5 dual 2 with 9 internal fans and another on the graphics card makes a noise, but it's not too bad.
Keeping the room cool will help keep the fan noise down.
If you have the '747' roaring fans, that's a different matter, and you should post again!

  • Is it OK to Swap a Dual 1.25 Ghz Logic board with a Dual 1 Ghz one?

I need to replace the logic board in my original Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Powermac G4. I found one that came from a Dual 1 Ghz Powermac. The person selling it says that they are identical.
Anyone know if it is alright to install the Dual 1 Ghz logic board with Dual 1.25 Ghz processors (and in the dual 1.25 case)? Thanks.
Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have a dead dual 1.25 MDD. Indications are that the problem is either the logic board or the processors. I have heard the MDDs are known to have more logic board failures that other Macs, so I am thinking about replacing that...
Does anyone know how much could I expect to pay for the just the logic board?

  • Dual 1 ghz machine manual restart problems

i bought a used dual 1 ghz quicksilver. its been asking me to manually restart it now and then. im not sure if its kernel panics or not. i have no idea what the problem is or whats goin on. i also had a hardware problem before where the on button would not work when i pressed it. it would just light up and not turn on. i have it connected to a cintiq 21ux if that means anything. please help asap!!! thanks.

Unplugging a Mac from it's power source causes the battery to discharge as it trys to maintain PRAM settings and the Macs clock. We already know it was unplugged as it was in storage. Since it's not a rechargable battery it'll need to be replaced.
I would check it first. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
Check out things in Texas Mac Mans tutorial on the subject. His tutorial is a little dated (don't believe it even mentions G5's) but the info in it, except SMU not being included, still applies.
I would do this first. If you still have issues after that, post back! The tutorial will tell you how.
    Cheers!

  • Power Mac G5 dual 2 gHz with graphic problem ?

    G
Hi to all : On my G5 dual 2 GHz (Model    M9590LL/A) I installed OSX 10.5 and updated it to 10.5.8.
The machine works fine. But the system preference window is just a white empty rectangle.
The corresponding menus work fine, but I cannot know what is the content.
I reinstalled it 3 times, every time with the same result.
Leaving the system at 10.5, updating by internet or from the CD resulted in the same problem.
I reformatted the disc, so it was a fresh install every time.
The machine has 8 GB RAM.
    Thanks for your help !

    Hi, was it SWUpdate, or...
    1058 Combo Update, 10.5.8...
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
    Repair Permissions afterwords, reboot?
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Aperture on a Dual 2 Ghz G5?

What is the performance of Aperture on a Dual 2 Ghz G5? It is outfitted with the GeForce 7800GT video card and currently has 2.5GB RAM. I plan on updating to 4.5 shortly. Will the RAM upgrade speed things up? I have downloaded the trial and w/@1000 D2X RAW files things are not too quick.
When making slider adjustments there is a very noticable delay before the changes register. In full screen mode the loupe, (which I love) is jerky when viewing modified files, seems smooth on untouched files though.
Am just wondering if there would be a noticable difference with additional RAM installed?
    Dual 2 Ghz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Dual 2 Ghz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I use iView Media Pro as my DAM of choice and you can get a 30 day trial. All of my images are referenced on a I TB Maxtor external drive. Both Aperture and iView reference the same drive. Many of my images are 65 MB Tiffs that were scanned from slides and sytem performance is pretty good. You can see I have a G5 dual 2.5 with 5.5 GB RAM. I don't believe processor speed makes that much difference with Aperture. It does appreciate more RAM. If you plan to edit in an external editor at times, or if you normally have several programs open at once the extra RAM will make a noticible difference.

  • Aperture does not install on G5 dual 2 Ghz

It says that my system does not meet the minimum system requirements, and won't install.
I have G5 dual 2 Ghz,3 GB RAM, OSX 10.4.6 and ATI 9600 pro graphic card.
I thought it was enough !
    Any help ?
    Thx
    Dual 2 Ghz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6) ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

I have a 2.0 G5 with 2G ram, and a brand new ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card bought just for my new 30" Apple display and for some reason Aperture won't work with this setup = I am running 10.4.6 and with the old card in the G5 and a 23" display Aperture works fine...but even with updating on checking System Profile it says the Core thing and Quartz Extreme are "not supported". But they should be.....
Any ideas? I've tried to figure out everything but nothing works so Aperture doesn't open.

  • Will ATI Radeon 7000 PCI work in my G5 dual 2 GHz?

I currently have a ATI Radeon 7000 MAC32M PCI video card working just fine in my G4.
I know I should be careful about what I plug into my G5's pci slots because I don't believe they are compatible with ALL pci cards that work just fine in G4's
Does anybody know if this card is compatible with my G5's pci slots????
My G5 has a dual-monitor AGP vidoe card and I am trying to go for a 3 monitor setup!
    thank you!

so I finally found the manual for the Radeon 7000
it says "Power: +5V 5± %, @ 1.3A typical"........and under Bus it says "PCI: 32-bit PCI local bus compliant with PCI version 2.1 specification 33 or 66MHZ compatible"
now in the Power Mac G5 Technical Specifications i found online at apple it says
    "PCI expansion
    One of the following configurations:
Three open full-length 64-bit, 33MHz PCI slots, or
    One open full-length 64-bit, 133MHz PCI-X slot and two open full-length 64-bit 100MHz PCI-X slots"
I have the FIRST of the Dual 2.0 GHz G5's.....the later Dual processor G5's might have had different specs than mine, but this Technical Specs file online doesn't specify between different generations of the dual 2 GHz G5's
but does this info help anyone assist me?
I do have 2 completely random cheapo firewire PCI cards in my G5 that I threw in there without much thought and they work fine....but I have no idea what their speeds/voltages are
I saw somewhere that G5's might ONLY be able to take 3.3 volt cards....so does that mean using the Radeon 7000 is a BAD idea for me since it says 5 Volts above??
or were the original Dual 2 GHz G5's okay with 5 volt pci cards?
    HELP!!

  • PCI Graphics in Quicksilver Dual 1 Ghz?

I recently was given a dual 1 ghz Quicksilver. The previous owner suspects logic board problems but before I give up I'd like to try a different video card, perhaps in a PCI slot instead of the AGP where the current card is. Anyone know if this is OK to do? Perhaps with the ATI Radeon 9200 PCI Edition? Any other cards you suggest? Thanks for any info!

I am troubleshooting a G4 AGP Sawtooth machine, and I did just what you are asking about. I pulled the AGP graphics card and installed a PCI graphics card. It works fine on this particular machine; I would guess it would work with yours also. Good luck!

  • Dual 2Ghz G5 Fans Ramp Up with Final Cut Pro 5

    Hey all,
Somewhere amidst the release of OS X 10.4.3 and Final Cut Pro 5.0.4, our first generation Powermac Dual 2Ghz G5's fans will occasionally ramp up for 30-60 seconds, then die back down, several times a day. And when I say ramp up, I mean they go from as quiet as they can, to as loud as they can, and then slowly idle back down. On days I don't use Final Cut, the Powermac stays quiet. There's probably not a solution to this that Apple themselves won't have to fix with an update, but I was just curious if I'm the only one experiencing this. Thanks.

    Hi Fathertime,
Thanks for your response. I'm rather late returning, but I wanted to follow-up on this. My Dual 2Ghz's fans didn't used to ramp up so obnoxiously like this, except when there was actually good reason to. As it is now, merely opening or playing back a simple DV video timeline causes the fans to ramp up to warp speed, and then slowly die back down multiple times throughout a workday. Needless to say, it makes audio tweaks and adjustments quite difficult when trying to listen closely and the computer keeps getting louder and louder...
I'd wager that this issue arrived for me with a Software Update, although I have no idea which one. I'm currently running the most recent versions of everything Apple-related. Motion 2.0.1 is now endlessly crashing on me too, so maybe it's time to wipe this noisy monster clean.
