Replace harddrive in Macintosh SE?

My old SE boots  up from floppies but not from the hard drive. It will not format the harddrive (says no SCSI devices can be found).  I'm assuming its a dead hard drive. I was  able to open the case and remove the drive. I just have no idea what to replace the old drive with. Are  there  plug-and-play replacements available? If so, what brand, model, etc? I don't want to sink a lot into this project... just get the SE up and running again to sell. Would appreciate any advice.

Hi,
Please refer to this topic for booting related problems. Hope you will find it useful :- http://www.ccadams.org/se/boot.html

  • Replaced Harddrive- failing again. Help?

My 15" alum 1.67 Powerbook g4 hard drive failed. Got the question mark for startup disk, no HD recognized, but ran fine from my external bootable backup. So, after looking for advice, I replaced the HD with a 160gig seagate. Things were OK for 2 weeks or so, but now I am back to the warning signs on the last HD: intermittent question mark, frequent crashes, and logs like Debugger() called, caught I/O exception, etc. I have run every hard ware utility I could (SMART, Disk utility, hardware disk, techtool, applejack) and they all say everything is fine!
I am out of ideas. I will replace the replaced harddrive just to be sure, but does anyone have ideas what could be wrong? It is out of applecare now, so thats not an option.
    Thank you!

That is not something normally an end user can do unless they want to replace the logicboard too. I recommend these places to do such a repair out of warranty:

If you are adventurous and know what you are doing either:
    http://www.ifixit.com/ or http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ offer guidance for do-it-yourselfers.
Your other option is just have the hard drive removed and put in another Powerbook of the same age*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
If you want it attached to a newer Mac that has an Intel CPU, best to put it in an external hard drive case, which is Parallel ATA/IDE (ATA/100) and 2.5", and manually migrate your data over that is not sensitive to upgrading to Intel CPUs.

  • Replacing harddrive issues on restart.

I just replaced harddrive in my macbook pro.  It turns on to the apple page but justs sits there grinding away.  I formatted harddrive, install seemed to go when.  When it requested a restart, it went to the apple page and just sat there.  ????

It sounds that your machine is running fine, but it doesn't seem you've inserted the install DVD(s) yet. Turn on your MBP, insert the first DVD, and follow the onscreen instructions.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If your computer does not support Internet Recovery, then you will have to reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.8 first, then download and reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

  • IPhotos won't show pictures after replacing Harddrive

    Hi,
Recently I had my Harddrive replaced to a larger one and I was told everything would be transferred over. However when I got the MAC Book back there was no iPhoto application so I had to re-install the iLife disc. Once I did this it automatically imported all the pictures back on to iPhoto's and all the albums have come back however the pictures are grayed out and I cannot view them.
I have tried the command & control suggestion but none of the options work. I have also tried to rebuild using iPhoto manager but I get an error saying something along the lines of 'cannot rebuild as orignal files cannot be found'.
Unfortunately I was not able to back any of it up as my other hardrive was full & would not complete the back-up but I was told it was not necessary as it would all be transfered across.
Is there any other options that anyone can sugguest? I have over 6,000 pictures scanning the past 5 years which I really cannot loose.
    Thanking you in advance.
    Zoe

    Your reply is unclear.
Are your photo in the Masters (or Originals) folder. That's a straight yes or no.
    I ask because you say
    Unfortunately not
    and then say
    There are files there

  • Replaced harddrive after it crashed-I need a new serial number. have redemption code

I replaced my harddrive on my laptop using windows 7. I lost abobe photo lightroom 5. I have my disk, redemption codes, id, and pass word. I need a new serial number to reinstall.

You don't need a new serial number, you need  your previous serial number to use, again.  You can only use the redemption code, once, and need to have recorded your serial number, somewhere.
The usual place to get your old serial number back is by logging into www.adobe.com and clicking Manage account then a few more clicks into your product lists and you'll see all the serial number for your registered products.
If you never registered your LR copy with Adobe then they won't have your serial number.  I don't know if there's a way to get it back or not.  You can try doing the help and support option on adobe.com and get to where you Still Need Help and do the Chat option and see if they have your old serial number stored somewhere even if you never registered it.

  • Black MacBook replacement harddrive?

Hey guys, my MacBooks harddrive is as corrupt as you can get and my apple care ran out a million years ago. I'm looking to replace my harddrive but I'm not very tech-savvy. Does anyone know what kind of harddrive I'm looking for?
I bought my MacBook in 2006 or 2007 and this is about as much information I can gather on the harddrive itself:

    Any help ?

I found a few similar MacBooks on everymac but no real information on the harddrive, just the size and speed.

Anyway, I'm looking on scan.co.uk for replacement 2.5" but they all seem to be SATA II, and I'm not sure if my MacBook can handle SATA II, might be too old.

  • Occasional freeze and Sad iPod on restart after replacing harddrive

Ok, need another techie to offer an opinion here. I started having issues with my 60gb a couple months ago, freezing, getting the sad ipod screen alot and getting worse. I determined to the best of my knowledge, being a Systems Analyst at work, that it was the harddrive. The ipods out of warranty, so I found a replacement drive online from a HD company. I installed the new HD, and after finagling it for a bit (battery very low) I restored it. Working great, until this morning on way to work, it froze on me and had some difficulty reseting, I finally had to do the System Reset from the Diagnostic Menu. This happened once again at work. It's been running fine for the last 2 hours, so Im not sure whats going on with it. The new HD was guaranteed 100% working and free from errors. Anyone have any ideas?

Do you (or anybody out there) think that restoring to an earlier software version would also resolve the (now infamous) problem of the folder-with-question mark icon?
Unfortunately, I believe we're still using the original software that was mailed with our Ipod. As of now, the Ipod (4g) does nothing but beep and show the folder with a question mark.
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? as we're just out of warranty? Many thanks.
    Hello,
This is more of a results post than a question post.
Recently I had several problems with my clickwheel
iPod, including having it freeze and not respond and
eventually going into the failure mode of cycling
through the icons listed in the the subject line. I
tried all of the recommendations I could find,
including Apple's "five Rs" and going into the
diagnostics mode as described in this site (more on
    this later):
    http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmo
    de/
    All tests came up Okay.
I tried erasing (using the iPod internal method and
the Disk Utility in OS X) and restoring the iPod
countless times. Nothing seemed to work.
Finally, I managed, somehow, to get the Disk utility
to show the hidden 32 MB FAT partition (I can't
remember how this happened). I erased (formatted)
and restored that, and instead of restoring the
current (3.1.1) iPod software version, I restored to
3.1. This seems to have done the trick. I'm fairly
certain that just restoring to 3.1 would have fixed
    the problem.
The troubles started shortly after updating to the
most recent software version and seem to have gone
away by backing up to the previous version.
I think going back a software version would fix many
problems people suddenly seem to be having with their
    iPods.
    Cheers,
    Mo

  • Good replacement harddrive?

Want to replace the harddrive with something bigger but not too sure on the drives that can go in my iMac G5, so was wondering if this is a suitable candidate:Maxtor Diamond Max
    iMac G5 17 1.8ghz 1GB RAM AX   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

FWIW - I just put together an external HD for myself: a 120B Seagate internal drive into an external FW/USB enclosure.
While searching for advice on the subject, I frequently was told that Seagate and Hitachi have the very best reputations for quality HDs right now.
Having said that---you can be sure that someone will now strongly disagree.

  • Replacing Harddrive -- size?

One of my harddrives is failing  SMART check and needs to be replaced. Its the one I keep my iTunes files on and it is a 1.5TB Drive. I'd like to get my files off the drive before it dies completely.
I've been looking at the 3 and 4 TB dives as replacements. I've been reading comments about 3TB Drives having problems but haven't found anything specific. WHat's the latest? I'd really like to go with a bigger drive for the storage space but I don't want to add a problem.
    Any suggestions?
ALSO Should a large drive be partitioned above a certain size or is that "old school?"

I'm sorry to hear that Grant or anyone else has been having trouble with their machine.  I've had no problems whatsoever with partitioning or erasing any 3TB or 4TB drive in my Mac Pro 4,1 running under Mountain Lion (10.8) or Mavericks (10.9).  I do a fair amount of system testing on things, so data gets moved around quite a bit, drives get partitioned and reformatted fairly regularly.
Currently I'm using a single 4TB drive, partitioned as one big drive, to store my iTunes library/media.  Previously, I'd had the drive partitioned as 1TB/3TB, and 500GB/3.5TB.  I have another 4TB drive currently with 3 partitions, and a 3TB drive in a single partition.  Neither Disk Utility nor Drive Genius have ever reported a problem with either drive.
I had a friend with a Mac Pro 3,1 who did have a problem using a 3TB drive once, but if I remember correctly he resolved the problem by disconnecting all his external drives (FW & USB) and rebooting.
The advice I'd offer is to avoid the WD green drives (or other manufacturer's equivalent) AT ALL COSTS.  They're great drives for casual use, but aren't really suited to big workstations or server hardware.  I'm a fan of Western Digital's red drives (or other manufacturer's equivalent) for an iTunes media library.  Those drives are designed for use in servers and network attach storage, and while they're not the fastest drives out there they're fast enough for serving up movies and music (on either the machine locally or over the network to AppleTV's, etc).

  • I need to know what replacement harddrive I need for a mac book pro with the serial

I need a little Help.  they guys at the apple store said to log on and click on the Apple Icon and enter my serial number to pull up the specs of my machine so that i can get a replacement hard drive but I'm not having any luck.  my serial number for my mac book pro is W892200S91T.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

Any 2.5" diameter, 9.5 mm thick SATA HDD will be compatible.  Look at the options available here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Note that they now are available up to 1.5 TB in capacity.
There are other vendors as well.
    Ciao.

  • TM restoration of replaced harddrive, stalled

So I recently had a hard drive failure on my iMac (intel, 24", 2007) & had authorized service replace the original 500gb drive with 1TB drive. I've formatted the drive, installed Leopard and then was restoring from TM which is on a WD external drive. I chose to not restore all of the users b/c it turns out I'm the only one using this computer. When I clicked to start the restore, I get the "Transferring Information" screen but the progress bar is empty & not changing and I hear no activity in the iMac or the WD external drive. Looks stalled. What should I do to restart the process?

    michael969 wrote:
What I mean is that all my history of TM backups is visible in the sidebar and I can navigate to one of them and select but 'Applications' for any of those dates is greyed out and therefore not selectable.
There is/was probably something wrong with one or more of the apps, likely caused by the drive failure before your last backup, so the corruption was transferred to the backup. Then Migration Assistant couldn't deal with it, and TM isn't real happy with it, either.
Do you mean the Timeline on the right of the TM interface?
Start with a Finder window in List mode, then select +Enter Time Machine.+ Navigate to a recent backup, then to its Applications folder, then click it's disclosure triangle. That should give you a list of the apps, and you should be able to select and restore the ones you don't have, one at a time, (except for any that are corrupted).
It is somewhat of a moot point now since I have just gone about redownloading Firefox, VLC, Photoshop etc. My only questions would be how to avoid this in the future? Why wouldn't the installation software permit restoration of the 'Applications' file from TM? (or why did it never finish 'Calculating' the applications folder?) How large should the TM folder on the external media be relative to the disk you are backing up? (ie: 100%, 50%, or other?)
The TM disk/partition should be 2-3 times as large as the data it's backing-up. This varies greatly, of course, depending on how you use your Mac. If you're talking about the Backups.backupd folder, it will be the total size of all the included backups. As the first is a full backup, and the others are incremental, it should keep growing until TM starts deleting the oldest backups to make room for the new ones.
In the end, TM has worked OK but not as well as I would have expected or hoped. At least I haven't lost photos or video. I did lose iMovie HD which isn't available for download anymore which is a pain. Anyone know where I could get iMovie HD?
It appears the problem was not with TM, but with one or more items that were corrupted by your disk failure. I suspect any backup app would have done about the same.

The new board is from newegg and is a western digital wd scorpio ATA 250 gb wd2500beve-00wzto, I was told this is what i needed.
The key in and pins are the same as old board.
Thank you so much for any help I can get

That's the correct drive.  What is your question?  To do the replacement, you flip the unit over, remove the hard drive cover, slip the drive out, remove the 'caddy' and put it on the new drive, slide the new drive back in, replace the cover and boot from your recovery disks to restore the original disk image.
