Replace internal HD, Restore with TM

Hi. I'm considering upgrading my 120 GB stock macbook hard drive with a 250 GB or 320 GB drive. The mechanics of actually opening the case and physically replacing the HDD are very simple, but I'm a little lost and have heard several different methods of transferring my data to the new drive. I'd like to put my Time Machine backups to good use and restore from them, as I have read a few posts of peoples' TM backups doubling up after replacing their HDD. Can anyone explain how I can do this? I vaguely recall a section in the Leopard install process that said restore from Time Machine backup, but I'm not positive. Thanks for any help in advance.

Hey, sorry I just haven't gotten on in a while. I actually haven't done the replacement yet. I'm in college and not working right now, so money got a little tight. I'll let you know when I do it though if you haven't already replaced yours. Or I'm sure you could find others who have done it also. As for the backups, I really have no idea (as I haven't replaced the drive yet) but that's why I was wanting to use the time machine backups as opposed to a cloning software (SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner), because I had read about some people experiencing some problems with backups afterwards.

  • Replacing Internal DVD Drive with HDD in Mac Mini?

Has anyone tried replacing the internal DVD drive with a hard drive, giving you TWO internal hard drives? I think you need a cable to match up the SATA connectors. Then you could use a USB external enclosure for the DVD.
    Thanks.

Very interesting, thanks el Duque. Too bad MCE doesn't make a carrier for the Mac Mini. I wonder if one for a Macbook Pro can be easily modified to fit?
I have just learned that the SATA connector on the logic board for the optical drive in Macbooks and the Mini is called a "Slim-SATA" connector. Instead of the power side of the connector having 15 pins, it only has 6, with both types of connectors having a standard 7-pin data side. Both power and data hook-ups are achieved in a single connector -- a power side and data side.
Since the ports on 2.5" hard drives are "standard" SATA connectors, AND they don't match up to the logic board's connector location (like with the connector location on the optical drive), a cable is needed to run between the HDD and the logic board connector.
Unfortunately, such a cable is not available -- yet. Instead, one has to be fabricated out of two types of SATA cables -- a Molex 4-pin to SATA 15-pin power cable and a combination cable that looks like this:
    http://www.byteccusa.com/product/SATA/SATA-XP118/SATA-XP118.htm
The fabrication involves replacing the molex 4-pin power end of the combi-cable with the SATA power end of the molex 4-pin to SATA power cable (cutting and soldering). The BIG question now is whether a HDD will work with just the two-wire power cable (of the combi-Sata cable) that an optical drive normally uses? Anyone know if it will? Thanks.

  • Replace internal CD-ROM with combo drive

    Hi!
Want to replace the internal drive to be able to burn CDs, e.g. from iTunes.
    Is it possible?
If so, am I limited so certain brands and models?
Would this one be possible for instance:

    Hello, Leonid
I see you are in the USSR, so I don't know how difficult it might be for you to purchase the drive I'm about to show you, but I guess UPS goes everywhere, so, good luck!
    Here is the link: http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&ProductCode=IMACSLDVDR8DL&CategoryCode=STORDVDRW
This is a DVD/CD burner/reader made specifically for the slot-load G3 iMac. It will burn every kind of disc, especially DVDs, and the claim is that it will work with any kind of program involved in burning discs.
I will be installing one soon and will report back on my experience. If you get one, please let all of us know how it went with you.

  • B590: replace internal wi-fi with different chipset?

I have a Thinkpad B590 which came with a Broadcom 4313 wireless chipset. This wireless works fine - under Windows. Unfortunately, I'd like to (also) run a different OS (OpenBSD) on this laptop, which does not have support for this chipset.
I see the wireless chipset is field-replaceable; is it possible to replace the chipset with another half-height mini-PCIe wireless adapter? If the BIOS does not allow me to put in an arbitrary adapter, can I replace the chipset with the Intel one that ships on some other B590 models?
I am aware that external wi-fi adapters exist; for various reasons, that's not a great solution for me.
    Thanks!

My iphone 4 was crushed on the road.  Bought a 4 replacement tried to restore it in itunes to get my contact info and it said there was a problem with my phone and I should contact apple store.  What does that mean please?

Is the replacement exactly the same as the original ie same memory size & same version? If so it may require updating the OS software before trying to restore your stuff from the backup.

Read another post in the forum about this and it appears this app also installs a profile with a proxy service that you will have to try and delete as well. Check that out.

  • Can I replace my optical drive with internal blu-Ray player?

Basically what the question says. I have a MacBook Pro mid-2009, and I'm wondering if I can replace the optical drive with an internal blu-ray drive.  I would want to be able to read and write to regular CD and DVD still though, that's a must. Also, if there is an internal drive I can put in, will OSX Mavericks support playing a blu-ray movie just because my computer can read it?
Thanks for any knowledge or advice you guys can offer!

    No.

My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen.  Any suggestions? Many thanks! Richard

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

Just replace my HD, restored from backup but now my iPhone won't sync with iTunes over wifi

Is synching over wi-fi viable?  I've never done it, but when I tried something similar back in the old Palm PDA days, it was S-L-O-W, slow as molasses.  I realize that the i-device are far more modern with faster processors, but wondering whether it's even worth exploring doing this.

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

You don't see drives when using a hardware RAID only the volumes.
WD Green are not suitable for hardware RAID (or software RAID for that matter).
USB2 and TimeMachine are a disaster waiting to happen. I've used SATA (internal) and eSATA (using SATA PCIe cards) trouble-free.
I can't say I begin to understand your use or "choosing the install drive for the backup"
    Install what?
You don't load TimeMachine. Maybe seems minor but that is not how to describe the behavior of software.

I am about to replace my hard drive with Apple.  Do I need to format my existing drive to clear my data?

In my view, definitely. Make sure you have reliable and tested backup of all your important data by way of TIme Machine or a clone (preferably both) so that you can restore once the drive is replaced and then erase the internal drive.

  • Replace one itunes account with another

I have the itunes application downloaded on my laptop but i recently made another itunes account and i want the new one to be on the Itunes application. So i uninstalled the application thinking that if i downloaded it again it would ask me for an account. Except all it did was restore the old account. I am wondering if anyone knows how to replace one itunes account with another. If you know anything that can be useful comment.

    Store > Sign Out
    Store > Sign In
All purchases remain tied to the account used to buy them, but you can authorize iTunes to multiple accounts and put protected content from up to five on your devices. Generally best to stick to one account if possible. More so once you get to iOS devices as managing app updates over multiple devices is a chore.

Hi, I upgraded my Iphone 3gs from version 4.1 to 6.0.1 but upon restarting, the sim card is no longer recognized, i cant restore with itune nothing at all!! i'm so confused and ****** off... please provide any help

Is the SIM from the carrier the device is locked to?
Has the device ever been hacked or jailbroken?
Have you tried simply removing and re-installing the SIM?  What about replacing the SIM?

Looking to replace internal hard drives in a MacPro.  Was thinking about 3TB.  Any recommendations?

Look in System Report for the link speed available. (Mine says 3 Gigabit.) Get drives with at least that speed; going beyond that won't get you any more performance.
