Replace LCD in 23" Cinema Display?

I recently acquired (for $100) a 23" Cinema HD Display with a cracked LCD. The display lights up and displays so it seems to be working correctly despite the loss of the LCD. I can buy a used replacement for $250. Assuming the replacement LCD is fine, how hard is it to disassemble, repair and reassemble a Cinema Display? There are no visible screws or other ways in and I'm guessing a lot of glue in involved. I have replaced LCDs in many laptops (including titanium PowerBooks) but have yet to attempt anything on this scale before.

I'm in a similar situation where I have an out of warranty cinema display that does not work. Apple want more than the cost of a new display to replace it!
I want to get inside it to see if there are any obvious problems but cannot find any information on the web on how to do this. A number of people have suggested that the sides are either glued on or held on with clips. I think its glue myself so would use a hair dryer to help loosen before removing.
Can you let me know how you get on if you go ahead with the repair. Thanks and good luck.

  • Replacement LCD Displays

Hi, Folks--I'm new to this forum so please forgive me if I'm asking something that has been asked recently.
I have a 23" Cinema Display (the older one, model # M8536) that needs a new LCD display unit (the old screen is cracked). Is there any place where an end user can purchase these replacement screens for self-installation? I have Googled this topic everyway I can think of and can only find big LCD manufacturers that sell to the corporate world. One exception was applepalace.com which had the units available for about $1,800--a ridiculous price for a display that has not even been sold by Apple for a couple of years now.
I've also scoured ebay, but the integrity of these used displays is always suspect.
Any help for this do-it-yourselfer would be appreciated. Thanks!!

The reason why yyou can use your MacBook on tv is that your hardware is totally fine. But your MacBook display isnt. i dont think you can solve this problem. This macbook needs an operation of an expert. He is going to replace the old display with newer. This accident can cost a lot of dollars so next time be careful with your MacBook! Best of luck to you!

  • Broken LCD 23" cinema display need your HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi can anyone help me im trying to look for replacement LCD for my 23" cinema Display i check ebay none is there a web? i can buy it?

Thats really helpful Dave, well done for going to the effort of making a post which is less than useful.
It may surprise you to learn that not everybody speaks english, and a great many people don't speak perfect english. A purist/elitist would include the entire united states on that list.
If you don't have the capacity to interpret less than perfect english, please feel free to complain to someone else who might actually care about your opinion. I find your post ignorant and intolerant as well as thoughtless.
To provide a slightly more helpful answer to the original question, the LCD panel used in the 23" cinema display is not a common thing to find. Your best bet is to find one with a failed inverter or controller board and swap parts yourself. Apple service providers can only swap out the whole unit for you. Even they are not allowed to order components for these units.

  • 17" LCD Cinema Display does not work on G4 Tower with ATI 9000

    Hi,
I have a G4 Tower with the original AGP ATI Radeon 9000B video card. My friend gave me this unit just recently but not the original monitor. Well after he got his new 30" Cinema Display he gave me the original 17"LCD Cinema Display. I was so happy, plugged it into the card and fired up the CPU but nothing! just blank! It is not getting any power for the USB ports or anything. My buddy says the monitor was checked before I picked it up. I yanked the Video card out and put it back in, inside the CPU was clean as was the card, put it back together and still nothing. The VGA monitor I have is connected via adapter to the other input and works fine. I tried doing display settings and the Cinema is not even detected. Is the Video card fried on the digital side?
Do I need a new one?
Here is the info on the CPU:
Machine Model: Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    Serial Number: XB0120xxxxx
    Any help wold be appreciated.

    Hi MFG,
    Welcome to the discussions.
The G4 AGP Graphics model originally shipped with an ATY Rage 128 graphics card. The ATI Radeon 9000 graphics card that is installed in your G4 is not the original card.
The ATI Radeon 9000 comes with a native ADC port (which you are trying to use). This port is only fully functional if the computer is ADC enabled. Your model of G4 is, unfortunately, not ADC enabled.
You can confirm this by opening the computer and having a look at the AGP slot (where the graphics card is installed). In ADC enabled Macs, there is an extra slot at one end of the AGP slot to accomodate an "extra leg" that the ADC graphics cards (such as the ATI 9000) have. This extra leg supplies the power and USB feed. You'll probably find this extra leg with no slot for it to go into.
What this means is that you are not getting power and USB feed through the ADC port to your display.
If you want to get the 17" ADC Apple LCD display working off this card (it's definitely the LCD display and not the CRT display, please confirm), you will need to use a DVI to ADC adaptor such as this one:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD
and run it off the DVI output.
You can run your VGA screen at the same time (if you want to) off the ADC output by using this adaptor:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0117-ADCV
This will work off the ADC port because, although the ADC port is not getting USB or power feed, it's still getting the DVI feed (which is what this adaptor needs).
    Cheers!
    Karl

  • Using Cinema Display and Samsung LCD with One Mini

I have been trying unsuccessful to output the DVI of my mini to my 23" Apple Cinema and my Samsung 4669F (native resolution of 1920x 1080p). I have tried various methods including using the Gefen 1:2 DVI Splitter (Ext-DVI-144) and a DVI-HDMI cable to the samsung in conjunction with SwitchResX, all to no avail.
Any help?- I wish to mirror the same display on both LCD screen simultaneously?- However, I would settle for a solution of a convenient A/B switch? ANy tips?
What about an external USB video card for the Mini- that should work too?- any tips?
I used SwitchResX because I determine that because the 23" ACD was 1920 x1200, the Samsung was not displaying because the Gefen splitter box was sending the same signal in 1920 x1200 to the Samsung, which was not accepted by the Samsung whose native resolution is 1920 x 1080p. However, once I switched the resolution to 1920 x 1080 to force an out of the mini to that resolution, there was no display at all on the 23" ACD and I had to do a safe mode reboot to recover the display on the 23" ACD?-
One would think that it would be relatively easier for Apple to create a script that would allow a person to display 1920 x 1080p on the Cinema Display, a script that overrided the message from the ACD that tells the mac mini to stretch any resolution to 1920x1200 before it gets to the 23" - This way I could use SwitchResX and the Gefen splitter to output 1920x1080p to both displays at once (of course the 23" ACD would have to have some black borders on the top and bottom. Why doesn't apple make this available? - Spent $900 on this monitor and the Mini has a DVI output- why should the Gefen splitter be rendered useless simply because my other display is a different native resolution.

    Of course it is!

  • Does anybody knows where can i buy a replacement AC power cable for my cinema display 27"?

Does anybody knows where can i buy a replacement AC power cable for my cinema display 27"?

It may not be the same molded plug but I would think any normal 3-prong computer power cable should work.
    How about this one?
922-6529 Power Cord - Apple Cinema Display
I've always had the theory that if you put two computer power cords in a drawer they will breed and you'll end up with a lot more!   My parts drawer is always full of them.  They like to knot up by themselves as well!  Maybe that's how they breed.

  • A1081 Cinema Display LCD Monitor compatibility

I am about to buy a reconditioned A1081 Cinema Display LCD Monitor 20"? But i need to know if it will work with my MacBook Pro 10.5.8 and my ipad 2? As i am buying it to use at an exhibition. iIf so what adaptor will i need to hook both of these up? Thank you in advance.

Are you sure the monitor is set to receive input over the VGA input? Have you tried the DVI input on the monitor? You may have better luck with DVI.

  • LCD 20" Cinema Display Not Working on MBP

    Hi people!
Somehow, the Apple Cinema Display (LCD) of 20" isn't working when I plug it to the MBP (late 2011). The monitor remains black after pluging it. Sometimes is detected by the MBP, and sometimes it isn't. Quite random thing. Same hapens when I'm in Windows, through Bootcamp. The weird thing is that I've never had this problem before and it was like being each time more often that the monitor isn't detected. Nowadays, it seems that it won't work. However, the minidisplay port is okay, as well, the monitor.
I use the monitor for work, so this is delaying my work each time more. Please, I need a solution for this since my physical existence depends on this.
    Thanks,
    Ø3

    UPDATE:
When I plug the external monitor into the MBP, the MBP automatically switches to the discrete graphic card, but the external monitor keeps black and also, the mouse pointer doesn't move to the second monitor, like if it wasn't really detected, even if the MBP automatically switches to the discrete graphic card.
Please, I need help with this.
    Thanks,
    Ø3

  • Macbook Pro Display Blank/Black - Replaced LCD

Hi all - I recently started working on a Macbook Pro for a coworker that had dropped their MBP. The LCD was broken, but the computer was still functional, as I saw that the OS booted normally. So, we ordered a replacement LCD.
The first LCD was dead (or so we thought), so a replacement was given by the LCD distributor. Same deal.
Dead monitor, I have tried the following unsuccessfully:
    -reset PRAM
    -reset PMU
-new inverter, new cable - neither worked
    Any thoughts?

OK--so this is an original MBP. You are in the late 2008-early 2009 section of the forum, so I am going to request that your post be relocated to the original MBP section.
Have you tried an external display? If you get good graphics on an external, it will be further conformation that the graphics chip is OK.
I am puzzled as to why the original display worked, but two separate replacements did not. I have heard of the brightness indicator getting stuck all the way to the left, so that the display remains black. Can you see the desktop at all by shining a bright light through the apple? If so, maybe you could go to System preferences>Desktop and see if the slider is stuck, and if so, move it to the right.
    Good luck!

  • Kitten + New Cinema Display = need cord replacement :(

Well, my cat chewed through the USB cord that is part of the set of three cords that comes out of the beautiful new LED Cinema Display that I bought. Not the nicest morning surprise. I will be covering the cords or shutting the cat out of the office from now on. In the meantime, the USB cord is no longer functional. Fortunately, the power cord and the Mini Display port cord are fine. I am able to plug my keyboard directly in to my MacBook Pro, and use the display that way.
My question is this: Since I rather expect that either the power or the Mini Display port or both could end up fraying, getting chewed, not working, etc. - are there replacement options for these? Really, I'd like to have the USB cord working, too - so if it's an easy thing, I would like to get the cable replaced now. I am very worried that I will lose $800 worth of equipment because of a need to have a new cable. (The cable doesn't appear to be removable - does anyone know?)
    Thanks for your help.

Apple could replace the cable, but it won't be cheap. Find a local computer repair store and see if they can cut the end off a new USB cable and splice it on to the display's cable. There are only four wires in the USB part, and if they use shrink tubing over the splice, it shouldn't look too ugly.

  • Cinema Display DVI connector replacement.

I was wondering if it were possible to get the DVI connector on my 20" Cinema Display replaced, 2 of the pins on the connector have been broken off . Does apple offer this service?

What kind of Macbook Pro do you have?  The Retina Macbook Pro needs a different magsafe.  If you have the retina Macbook Pro, you can buy the Magafe 2 adapter.

I'm looking for good place online to buy replacement logic board for my 20" cinema display. Any suggestions?

You could ask the Apple store to let you have (or buy) one of the boxes they use to send the displays in for repair. They should have these on hand.
