Replace or not motherboard, water damage

my girlfriend just bought a macbook pro and water got spilled on it. The motherboard has a little bit of corrosion but the computer is working fine. If she waits to replace the motherboard can the corrosion creep onto other parts of the macbook? Should she try and replace it as soon as possible or is it ok to wait and see if it will actually affect the computer at all.

It is virtually impossible to fix a water damaged electronic device.  Replacement is the only logical choice.

  • Apple denies replacement due to apparant water damage, wetness indicator is white, iphone 5 has been searching for a network for 5 days and its never got wet

So my iphone is about 5 months old, over the last week it has been searching for a network signal. Yesterday i blew inside the sim tray to as i thought there was something stuckin there (stupid i know) but today apple denied replacement due to water damage. theres no water damage and the wet indicator is white. any advice on what i can do?? as i know it hasnt been submerged in water or exposed to water the phone was broken before i blew in it...the phne works fine its just not picking up a network

Take it back to the Apple store and ask for an explanation as to why they believe there is water damage.  They should be able to show a water sensor that has been affected.
If still unhappy with the explanation, ask for a manager.
IF that does not get a satisfactory resolution, contact Apple customer care.

  • IPad mini screen not working / water damage

I had my iPad mini and a bottle of water i in my bag - water started leaking. When I realised the iPad was still working (it was a bit wet but wiped it off and tested it and it was working), I removed the case and put it in a dry bag. Came back home and tried to use it. The screen lit up for 2 secs and then went dark. The iPad is still working - when I press the home button and the power button I can hear the "taking picture" sound. The screen however remains black.... Any idea what I need to do? Thank you, Eleni

You really should not turn the iPad on until it is totally dry. Turn it off, if it will turn off. Get a bag and fill it with uncooked white rice. Place the iPad in the bag for 48 hours and let the rice draw the water out of the iPad. You need enough rice to cover the iPad. After 48 hours, remove the iPad, if it still seems to have some dampness, get more rice and try it again.
When you think it is finally dry enough to try, power it back up again And see how it goes. A better alternative, IMO, would be to take the iPad to an Apple Store and let them inspect it after you dry it out and before you turn it on again.

  • Can I replace the speaker after water damage?

A couple days ago I spilled tea on my keyboard. I kept the computer in a bag of rice for 2 days and everything is working fine .. except for the sound. With or without speakers, when I press the sound button there is a small circle with a dash in it at the bottom of the window that pops up.
Is this able to be replaced? If so, how much would that cost ?

    Hi brownl1023,
You'd need to determine the extent of the damage inside the machine caused by the liquid. If you bring the machine into an Apple Retail Store then it'll be a flat fee service and it won't be cheap. Some service centers will offer to try and fix the damaged speaker but if the logic board around the corner is the problem this will drive the price up significantly.
Without knowing exactly what's wrong inside it's impossible to give a definitive price. It could be $200+, it could be $900+. Because there's such an unknown the range is so broad.

  • HT3302 iPhone 4s 64Gb Water Damaged Replacement With Warranty

How much does it cost for apple to replace my water damaged iPhone 4s 64gb with warranty? It expires next month!

There's no hurry, the warranty does not cover water damage.  Apple will do an exchange for $200 + tax.

  • IPhone 5C Replacement Fees for Water Damage

If I have an iPhone 5C that does not have AppleCare+ coverage and therefore does not have water damage coverage and I damage it via liquid contact, what are the fees to replace the phone with a new one?

Be advised you will get back the same as you turn in - same color, same GB,
same locked/unlocked status. Even thought the charge is the same, you cannot
change iPhone models or GB in the iPhone.

  • HT3302 water damage to iPhone 4S

My iPhone has water damage to it and I know that apple do not cover water damage in their warranty but I've only had it a month and it cost me £499! It took me ages to save up for it and now it's ruined. what can I do?

    tonefox,
Your response is about as helpful as a mechanic in a car accident repair body shop giving you a lecture on how to drive.  Thanks for that!
    everyone else,
My wife's friend had her iPhone 4 helpfully placed into the toilet by her 14-month old boy.  Delightful.  She went into the Apple Store in Leicester and the replaced her phone with a working one (I think it was brand new, but might have been refurbished) for £119.  On Saturday, our 14-month old boy managed to do the same.  Oh dear, they get everywhere, these young explorers, just when you're least expecting them to (tonefox, you need to add 'don't have kids' to your simple rules...)
We tried the sealed tupperware container with rice (and a dehumidifier box) in the airing cupboard trick.  No luck!  We're thinking about buying a stock of silica gel for next time we are terminally distracted and fail to follow the 'simple rules' (funny old thing, you just can't get hold of silica gel on a long bank holiday weekend!).
We do have quite decent insurance with our bank account, but the trouble is, they have just upped the excess to £100 for iPhones, whilst still £50 for all other phones!  To my mind, it's worth the other £19 to not have to do all the phone calls and paperwork, and, most importantly, not to wait for a week or two to get it fixed and returned.
I will be going to the nearest Apple Store to do the same as my wife's friend tomorrow.  I'm expecting to pay £119 for a replacement.  I am led to believe that this is now policy with Apple, but have not managed to find it anywhere yet.  I'll let you know how it goes.

  • Z10 water damaged

    Hi,
I have dropped my Z10 into the toilette. It was on, but when I've took it out it was off already. When I've tried to turn it on, red light appeared and for some seconds Blackberry logo appeared on the screen. The logo never reappeared again during my next tries to turn it on. I left it to dry indoors and about 24 hours later I managed to dissassemble it, taking out the motherboard, but not the screen. I rinsedthe motherboard and the inner back cover with distilated water and left it to dry. Tha some half a day later I also rinsed it with 96% Alcohol and left it to dry for some 5-6 hours and I also used the cool dryer for couple of minutes. I put it back together and no red light was on anymore neither. The phone doesn't seem to start at all, so I tried to check whether is a screen issue by connecting it via HDMI cable to a TV screen. No device was detected at all. For all my tries I used a spare battery and not the water damaged one. Is there any risk that I've caused a short circuit? Or is there any chance that the phone might still have some wetness inside? In any case now it's reassambled and buried in rice and I plan to keep it there for 2 days.
Thank you all for the suggestions and the ideas! You are a great team!

It is unfortunate that you tried to apply power before fully drying it out...such can cause permanent damage. The best method is to not apply any power until you have done all that you can to dry it.

Yes, of course there is...but an an internet-distance, there is no way for anyone to know for sure.

    Also yes. Anything is possible.

I suggest 5 days minimum, and also in a properly warm place.
    Good luck!

  • My iphone got wet? does rice work? does the warranty cover water damage?

i spilled a bit of water on it, and the screen is not responding.

Power it off and put in a sealed plastic bag with uncooked rice and do not touch for at least 3 days.  There's a very small chance it will work again, but even if it does, it's likely to have new problems develop
The standard iPhone warranty does not cover water damage, and in fact is completely voided by water exposure.  Unless you purchased AppleCare+ or other hazard insurance, the best you can hope for is an out-of-warranty replacement, price varying with country.

  • Water Damage to 2009 Macbook Pro

I just spilled an entire glass of water on my Macbook Pro (I was carrying them both and I tripped :(). The Screen went light blue then yellow then I turned it off. I blow dried it (cool setting) and held it upside down for 10 minutes. I am not going to turn it back on for 24 hours. I have AppleCare, but I know that it does not cover water damage
My question is this -- My friend’s dad works on electronics an has offered to take it apart and dry it for me. I am tempted to take up this offer, but I’m a little nervous about that risk. Has anyone had a similar experience or do you have any advice for me?
    Thanks,
    Moey.

Next time you take it to the technician, it is better to admit the accident happened than not. You never know if in the long term some issue will come up that will cost more than the machine is worth and be out of warranty. If Apple is tempted to replace the whole machine or logicboard, you can often get by for less by calling one of these places:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
The longer you hold the truth, the longer it might take for issues to be fixed as the technician may be troubleshooting the wrong items, and in the process damage more, not knowing the accident happened. Knowing the accident happened, they'll know to take a certain level of care to ensure other things don't get tripped up.

  • Iphone water damage without coming in contact with water or moisture

Hello, I am long time apple fan/user. I bought an iphone 3 months ago. I really love this phone. I took very good care of the phone carrying it around like a baby making sure nothing happened to it. I upgraded to 3.0 and then a day later I upgraded to the new version of facebook. The update was taking a long time to load so I decided to cut the phone off and restart it. Once I cut the phone off, it would only come on and show the apple logo and cut back off. I took the phone to my local apple store. The guy at the store took the phone in back and return saying, the phone had water damage and the only option I had was to purchase a new phone.
At no time have I dropped this phone in water, left in bathroom during a shower, carried in my pocket (I have case for belt), left in extreme temperatures, transport from cold/cool climate to hot, etc. How is it that I have water damage?
After posting this dilemma on FB, I received several responses saying they had the same diagnosis for their iphone. Is there something that can be done to better equip these phones for the elements? Can a plastic cover be design to cover the port for the charger and insides ( like other phones have that snap into port)? Please give feedback. Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks,

Well I have a short story to tell. I had the exact problem with my 3G. I tried to download the latest 3.0 update and it did the Sync just fine but when it went to download the update the phone froze up and also locked up the computer. We tried to RESTORE the phone but all I ever got was a USB indicator and an iTunes logo on the screen. Finally I called Apple Support and they said to send in the phone or take it to an Apple Store to get it Restored. I choose to take it 40 miles to the Store and immediately they got out their little magnifier and looked in the ports and told me that the phone had been dropped in water---This phone has never been wet ! ---We asked for the manager and he had the same lame story that we had ruined the phone by getting it wet and the phone needed replaced but not under warranty as the warranty did not cover water damage. When I informed him that it was not water damaged and the problem occurred during a program update he basically called me a lier and said everybody tells them the same story. I asked the manager to at least try to reset the phone as I felt there was no water damage and he refused as he said it would ruin their computer. We called Apple support again and spent 2 hours on the phone as she had me remove and re-install iTunes and other settings to no avail and she told me to take the phone to an Apple store. A couple days later my girlfriend took the phone to an Apple store and sweet talked the Genius into RESTORING the phone without looking at the moisture indicators [both were pink] The phone restored perfectly and she was out the door in 15 minutes with a perfect working phone. We now are on record that we have an operational phone regardless of what color the moisture indicators are. This phone was a replacement for the original new one as it crapped out early after purchase and it probably had pink indicators when we got it. This is a great marketing scheme on Apples part to get current customers to purchase new phones and then use these same [faulty]phones for replacements for under warranty phones. This issue is rampid on the web it would behoove Apple to change their policy. At least they should install the indicators in a place that a sweat droplet will not trigger the indicators like other phones where they are in the battery compartment. I wasted way too much time on this issue and have placed an edict at my company not to purchase iphones anymore. i love the phone but do not have to live with Apples policy.
