Replace SATA drive power cable

One of the SATA drive power cables in my Power G5 2.0 DP died. Now I am using Y-splitter to get power from another port. It works but looks messy. I did quite a googling but I can only find power cable for iMac G5s. Could some one please tell me where to find replacements, or the definition of the pins so probably I can make one from the iMac version?

Hi
Any of the cables should work, the only differences being their length, one comes bundled with a SATA data cable and one is a splitter, allowing an ATA and SATA drive to be powered off the same existing molex connector. I'd just double check their male/female orientation before ordering though. It may be a shorter cable is better to reduce cable clutter inside the computer. I picked a SATA drive that included a legacy molex power connector on the drive itself, to keep the cable clutter to a minimum.

All you need is a plug adaptor, if required. Apple sells an adapter kit:

  • Hard drive power cable

I bought a graphite imac and need a hard drive power cable. Will any cable from a slot loading crt imac work?Whats the part #?I do have one for a tray loading imac but its different. Thanks!

Nope I'm wrong. It appears to be the same width as a SCSI cable at the logic end (I've got a SCSI and it plugs in fine) and IDE on the HD end.
You could actually make it work with the IDE part of that tray loaders cable. I have both there and will test if you like. Only the HD would work.
I may have some spares here if you need one.

Why won't Apple replace my magsafe cable in the UK, as is done in the US?  Thanks.

Thank, Russ. I just wondered if anyone had an opinion about the situation, which seems unfair. If there's a product call, surely it should be beyond just the US.

  • Charger/power cable replacement

Hi there, I need to replace the charger/power cable on my 2008 1,1 Macbook air- I wonder if anyone knows whether a 2011 AIr cable would work ? Many Thanks

Yes, it will work.  At some point in time, Apple changed the charging connector, and you may need to purchase an adapter form the Apple store.

  • Need internal power cable

    Hi,
I wish to install a USB 3.0 expansion PCIe card in my early 2008 Mac Pro (3,1).  The card has a 4 pin Molex power connector;  I think it's same connector one finds for power on a parallel IDE drive.  I believe I need to connect this to the 6 pin connector on my motherboard?  Anyone know where I can get a cable?
(PS: I posted this earlier, by mistake, in the iMac forum.  So this is a duplicate posting.  Apologies!!!)

    Grant Bennet-Alder wrote:
Mac Pro 3,1 is the 2008 model with Molex connectors.
Mac Pro 4,1 is the 2009 model with SATA cabling ONLY, so it would require a different cable.
After powering off, the Optical drive enclosure is really easy to remove halfway to inspect and/or disconnect the cables (no fasteners required). Once the cables are disconnected from the drives, it can be completely removed and you can stretch out the cables and see if they will fall short, and estimate how much more would be needed.
I am sure 72" is far more than you need -- they may even reach already.
Thanks, Grant. I will examine the connections. My project is to add USB 3.0 card reader or other devices to the PCI expansion card I'm planning to get.
Do you know if there are two separate DVD/CD drive power cables in the stock Mac Pro 3,1 or just a single with a Y cable between them? That is the model I have. If only one cable of the two used there, can stretch out the other one, then I'd be golden- nothing to add.
However, I suspect that there is a Y cable there for the second DVD drive, so I would need to connect to it and extend it down to the PCI card residing in the X4 PCIe port. Yes, 6' is overkill but I can eat some up by routing the cable neatly, the rest will bundle. Probably 48" would be sufficient. That costs more to make than it is worth.
When I take it apart, I can post pictures for anyone interested. FYI, recently put in an external antenna for the BT antenna to prevent/minimize interference with USB 3.0. Made a big improvement in level of the trackpad reception, too. USB crosstalk should be reduced and cable pickup will be reduced with the RF suppressors I used on the extension cable from the USB card reader to the card.

  • VME PCI-6200 hard drive interface cable identification

Hopefully someone on this forum still uses the VME PCI-6200.  I'm looking for a replacement hard drive interface cable, 50-pin female-female, connecting a 2.5" PATA hard drive to the PCI-6200 board.  Does anyone know the cable standard or where a replacement can be gotten?  I'm enclosing pictures and the board spec for identification purposes.  Thanks!

    jambraun,
According to this website I found      http://www.pc-pitstop.com/scsi_adapters/
It is an IDC 50 connector.
I briefly tried to find a retailer that sold them, but had no luck.

  • Extra power cable needed for a SATA drive in a G4 AGP "Sawtooth"?

If one adds a SATA controller card and a SATA hard drive to a G4 AGP "Sawtooth", will a power cable like the one at the below link be needed, or would the necessary power cabling ordinarily come with the drive?
    -John

Thanks for the additional information, japamac.
That would be Left (or right angle 270º) for the data cable.
Which of the below data cables would be more appropriate, the 18" long one or the 39" long one?
    [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATA39L>
Power connectors would be a left angle 90º to get wires going up.
I found the below two (the first is the same one linked near the top of this thread):

Is it okay to have one of the ends of a "Y" cable remain unconnected? I've done that with my existing ATA power cables, but I wanted make sure that that is also okay with the SATA power cables.

  • MBP wont recognize drives after replacing SATA cable

Background:  I decided to replace my existing drive with a SSD.  While in the process of replacing the drive, like a morron, I picked up the drive too fast and ripped the SATA cable.  Stupid, I know.  So I ordered a replacement.  Hooked up the replacement without any trouble, fired it up, the computer wont recognize any drives, formatted or not, SSD or HDD.  So I thought "great, terrible luck, I must have gotten a bad cable."  So I contacted the seller and they were kind enough to overnight me a new one.  Hooked up the new one, same **** problem.
What on earth is going on here?  The computer worked great before I ripped that cable, and now it's like it's just given up on reading drives all together.  Is there anything I can try?
    Please help!  :/
(MBP is a mid 2010 if relevant)

Ok then you either have bad cables or you are not installing it correctly. Like not seating it properly on the logic board.
There is also a piece of foam on the top of the part that connects to the logic board. If you did not move that foam from the original to the replacements it could be shorting to the bootom case.

  • Which 1TB (or bigger) SATA drive is the coolest/quietest/least power-hungry

I have a Power Mac G4 Dual 1.25 GHz MDD (it's this model here) which (as it's unmodified) runs very hot & noisy much of the time.
What doesn't help is that I have 3 hard drives installed. 2 of these (including the boot drive) are IDE (80 GB & 120 GB), and are attached to the cables at the front of the machine (am I right in thinking that this is the ATA-66 bus?). The third is a SATA drive (250 GB) connected to one of the sets of cables at the back of the machine (the ATA-100 bus?) via an IDE -> SATA adapter (not a PCI card).
This adapter took me many weeks of research to track down (& order online from the USA) as there didn't appear to be (at the time - a few years ago) anyone here in the UK that made or sold these adapters. (The opposite adapter - IDE drive to SATA cable - was freely available ironically, even in my local electronics shop). The physical size of the adapter means that I can't sit one of the other drives in the empty drive bay at the back of the machine.
A few months ago, as I was almost out of hard drive space, I decided to get a new (SATA) drive to replace the existing 3 drives. As well as giving me lots of capacity, one drive is going to use less power than 3, give off much less heat than 3, and hopefully reduce the fan noise.
Incidentally, I've found many good articles on reducing heat/power consumption/noise in MDD Macs - see here, here, here, here & here.
At the time, 1TB was the largest size available. After much research, along with some forum postings - see here & here - I decided to go for the Samsung Spinpoint F1 drive, which is currently quite cheap - see here.
However, I recently discovered that Seagate now makes a 1.5 TB drive, which would obviously be preferable - see here & here although it is much more expensive - see here.
However, there are many reports of problems with the Seagate drive - see here, here & here.
What I'm wondering is if there are any drives that are bigger than 1TB apart from the Seagate?
If not, would people recommend that I chance going for the Seagate, and hope that I don't have the problems, or that I'll be able to flash the firmware at some future point to sort the problem if it occurs (I have Virtual PC 7.0.2 installed, running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 - would this enable internal hard drives to have their firmware updated?) or should I just play safe and go for the Samsung, even though it's "only" 1TB?
The largest capacity money can buy is my primary concern, followed by low power usage, low heat output & low noise.
    Many thanks.

    Thanks for the info.
I don't really see the point in the expense of a PCI card when the IDE -> SATA adaptor works fine, and if I bought a PCI card, I'd then feel obliged to go through the hassle of selling the adaptor on eBay to try to recoup part of the cost of the PCI card.
I should have mentioned before that I want to format my new drive as a single partition, in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, and to boot from it. I only want the new drive in the Mac - I don't want any other drives in there. Apart from increased capacity & performance, and reduced power consumption, heat & noise - the main point of getting the new drive is so that there is only one drive in my Mac. Having more than one is a complete pain for me.
At the moment, despite having "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" unchecked in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, all 3 drives spin down very soon after they stop being accessed, which means an infuriating delay (& spinning beach ball) when they spin up again. One or more of them spinning up even interrupts music playing sometimes, and when I go to shut down the computer, if they are spun down but mounted on the desktop, they spin up again before they spin down as part of the shutdown procedure! Also, with more than one drive, I can't tell which drive a file/folder is on just by looking at it, if it's on the desktop.
As far as Other World Computing goes, they may ship to the UK, but by the time the international shipping charges are added, I very much doubt if the total cost of a new drive would work out cheaper than ordering from a UK supplier & getting free shipping.
Another potential problem I've discovered with the Seagate drive is actually a quote from the Other World Computing website that's reproduced in comment number 66 (on page 3) of the MacRumors Forums thread that I gave the link to in my initial post. Basically it says that if you format the Seagate drive as a single partition on a Mac, the performance isn't acceptable. It's apparently fine though if it's partitioned in 2 equal size volumes, or if you format it as an NTFS or FAT32 drive. Neither of these work-arounds are any use to me though.
Everything so far suggests that I should just go for the Samsung 1 TB drive, but I'm hesitant to do so until it's confirmed to me that there aren't any other drives out there that are bigger than 1 TB apart from the Seagate, and also, knowing my luck, the day after I buy the Samsung, Western Digital or Hitachi or someone will bring out a flawless 1.5 TB drive for not a lot more money, and I'll be kicking myself for ending up with only 2 thirds of the capacity than I could have had...

  • Cable order important for replaced Hard Drive?

I just replaced my F:/ projects drive, but did not pay attention to the cable order, either power or signal(?), that is, which cables were connected to which drives. Upon startup, I had to go into BIOS to set a boot drive, but there was only one drive showing (besides the DVD drive and a "removable" drive). I selected it but the PC still is asking for a boot drive.
    I messed up, right?
Is there a way to figure out the proper drive and cable associations?
    Thx.
    Paul
UPDATE: I got it to boot by changing the "right angle" SATA cable to the C:/ boot system drive. I have my E:/ media drive, but I'm not seeing the new F:/ projects drive yet.

UPDATE 2: Looks like I have to initialize it first in Computer Management (Win7). It's only 1TB, so I think I have to go with MBR style, if I'm not mistaken.

The new hard drive needed simply to be initialized.
The initial issue was that the "right angle" SATA cable needed to be connected to the C:/ system drive.
This resolved my issues and the new drive is functioning well so far with files being copied to it as I write.

  • Sata drive replacement for G5

I have a Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz circa jan 2006 and the hard drive is making the dieing cry already. I have a carbon copy on an external firewire of my system and am looking to replace my drive which I know is a Diamond max 10 250gb sata.
My difficulty is I don't know what to put in! . I have seen Maxtor DiamondMax 21 - Hard drive - 320 GB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 8 MB but is this compatible with my machine, or would you choose something else and so improve on this?
Your advice would be most appreciated, Thank you
    Alan

Lots of people like the Maxtors, they are good drives. They do tend to run very warm and that can shorten life. I like the current generation of Western Digital Drives, check out this 320g model for $75.

The drive is fast, runs reasonably cool, and as you can see, has a very high approval rating. I have 3
WD drives similar to this one in my Mac Pro and could not be happier. The new Seagates are also very good, as, believe it or not, are the Samsungs, The Samsungs are slower tho but run very cool. A great backup drive, but not a good boot drive. Good luck.

  • Dell T630 SATA Power Cable (15 pin)

We have a really odd requirements with a mushkin scorpion deluxe card which requires 15 pin sata power cable and I cannot seem to find a single sata power cable any where.

So I'm working on a Dell Optiplex 980 and it is a small-form factor machine. The manual states it can accommodate 2x 2.5 HDDs but the factory PSU only has a single standard size SATA power cable. The other one is used to power the optical drive (which I don't need, of course) and looks like this:Can I adapt this to a standard size SATA power cable so I can install a second 2.5" HDD?
Also, the output on the integrated soundcard is incredibly low. It's so quite that even at full volume, videos don't play loud enough (and this isn't a problem with other PCs on these speakers, so it's not the speakers or the receiver). Any recommendations on a PCI or PCIe soundcard that has an on-board headphone amp would be appreciated.Thanks...

  • Does Mac Pro come with connecting cables for your add-on SATA drives?

I am buying some Western Digital OEM SATA drives to put in my Mac Pro that I just purchased and is being shipped to me. I realize that OEM drives do not have any connecting cables/hardware. I assume that Mac Pro does have the necessary connecting SATA cables and hardware to attach the drive to the sleds? Or do I have to purchase them separately?

Nobody does it better than Apple. For years I was always struggling with cables and hard disk setups and I knew as soon as larger hard drives were available I'd want to replace my 500Gig ones. Once the 750Gig came out I ordered four then found a quick hard drive install video that showed you how to pull out the tray, remove the old drive, insert the new drive and push the tray back in.
It was that easy. Mac machines are so cool.

I've always had the theory that if you put two computer power cords in a drawer they will breed and you'll end up with a lot more!   My parts drawer is always full of them.  They like to knot up by themselves as well!  Maybe that's how they breed.
