Replace secondary site with distribution point

I have a client that would like to remove some unnecessary secondary sites and replace them with distribution points on the same hardware. Is there a built-in way of doing this from the SCCM console? What should be taken into consideration before doing
such a thing?

No there is no built in way to do this. It's essentially an uninstall (of the Secondary site components) and an fresh install of the DP. Content and boundaries are the only real considerations; you may want to use pre-staged content to essentially
cache a local copy so that it doesn't have to be replicated across the WAN. Technically, if you leave the sccmcontentlib in place, it may be able to reuse this but that's not supported so it may or may not work.

  • Replacing Secondary Site server with a new oneA

I have Secondary site running on Windows 2008 R2, but the server has some issue and i need to install a new secondary server.
The location is remote and Bandwidth a concern so i do not want all the packages to go over to the new Secondary Site /DP
Since the current Secondary site server is still alive , i want to take as much as from it .
Anyone has some suggestion on how i could accomplish this.

There's no built in way to do this in 2007; however, you should be able to use the preload package tool:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2009/05/07/configmgr-2007-the-preload-package-tool-preloadpkgonsite-exe-explained.aspx . Using this tool, you can copy the pick files from the existing secondary to the new secondary site server.

  • System Status- Site Status- Distribution Points Missing

    Quick question,
I seem to be missing some DP's from Site Status, if a DP is installed and running, I'm presuming that it should appear in the Monitoring\system Status\Site Status workspace....only I have some DP's that don't appear, what would cause this?
    many thanks

They should show-up there eventually. Did you check the Distribution Point Configuration Status
node to see if the distribution points are up-and-running already?

  • Secondary Sites / PXE Service Point

I would like to enable PXE booting from my secondary sites.
When and when don't you setup a PXE service point on secondary sites? I have the pxe service point setup on my main central site and this works fine.
Can I skip this step on the secondary site?
    thank you.

Depends upon where you want the systems PXE booting from. Generally, PXE booting across the WAN is not a good thing as it can take a long time. Also note the PXE process in ConfigMgr only delivers the boot image, all other content comes from a DP. There's
no reason you can;t spin up a PSP in a secondary site and this typically makes sense because the whole point of the secondary site is that you have clients at a remote location across a WAN link.

  • Instance Creation on Secondary Site with Mirroring as DR Mechanism

Hello all..........I am trying to create a multi-site failover cluster (Sql Server 2012).  Due to some support issues, I am unable to use AOAG, so I have decided to use Mirroring among two-2 locations with each
location holding separates instances.  Consider following:
There is Location A and B.
There are two-2 servers each in Location A and B.  They have their own storage.
Location A already has two-2 node failover cluster.  It has instance named Instance_A.
We need to introduce two-2 nodes from Location B to the failover cluster in Location A with its separate instance named Instance_B? How can I make it work?
If I go ahead with the setup.exe from SQL media and try to add node, it will ask me to choose the instance and the only instance available would be Instance_A, but I do not want it to connect to Instance_A.  I
want to join the two-2 nodes in Location B to the failover cluster in a way that Instance_B stays on Location B servers and Instance_A stays on Location A servers.  So that I can configure mirroring among the two.  I would appreciate headway into
    this.  Thanks.

    Hi Technet Junkie,
For multisite cluster, failover cluster not “aware” the shared storage replicate, therefore you must ask your storage vendor for the multisite storage replicate solution, In
SQL Server 2008 support multi-instances in one cluster environment. The method used to install a new SQL Server 2008 cluster instance is the same with the first one. The detail steps to fulfill that, please refer to the document: How to: Create a New SQL Server
    Failover Cluster (Setup): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx
Based on my experience, there is one thing we need to pay attention. It is the instance ID. In SQL Server 2008, the instance ID decides not only the instance Name but also the
folder path name on the disk. Please make sure the instance ID for one instance is identical on the nodes, but different with the other instance.

  • Macbook turns on then goes to blue screen and sits with active pointer

First of all, I have a Inter 13" macbook pro with a 128gb ssd. It has the Snow Leppard and it is updated. Now for the problem. I was working on my computer going to unzip something and the little multicolored spinning wheel come up. It just sat and sat. Well, i finally had to turn it off by holding the power button down. When it went to restart, it came to the gray screen and enede up on a blue screen with nothing on it but the pointer. I could move it around. I have been reading and have turned on while holding command shift and p and r or something like that to reset the ram. That was one idea that i have come across. It didn't work. I have went in safe mode and deleted the most recent program that i was trying to unzip. It never got unzipped, but i deleted it anyway. Still does nothing. I got in safe mode again and went to the disk utility and verified and fixed the permissions. It didn't say any were bad, but i went ahead and run the the permissions anyway. I am running out of things to think of. This is my first mac and it has been great untill now. Thanks for any help. Josh R.

  • Problems with Distribution Points, "in Progress", etc

I have two SCCM 2012 R2 networks. They have similar problems with DPs. Each network has two servers and each server has a DP. Server01 is site server and primary DP on each network.
    1) On Server01 on both networks in "DP Configuration Status" the icon is the upward green arrow (which I think in "In Progress") and in the details tab a weekly forced reboot package says "starting to process content" on NetworkA
and "processing content for site server" for NetworkB and for status they both say "In Progress". Is this because it a weekly recurring package?
    2) On Server02 for NetworkB I have two "failed to distribute content" messages and neither has details available. On message is a week 5 days old. Pkgxfrmgr.log only has errors about "pulldpqueryresult failed to execute wmi query...".
    3) On Server02 for NetworkA I have two "failed to update package" messages about updating Server02. The only errors in pkgxfrmgr.log are "pulldpquery failed".
    4) On NetworkA I mistakenly had checked "enable prestaged content"  and later turned it off. Now I have a bunch of hung "In Progress" messages about Server02 needing content manually prestaged. How can I kill these messages?
    Help much appreciated.

  • Secondary Site Distribution Points content flow

We are implementing an environment that contains over 750 locations with distribution points.  With the limitation of 250 DPs per site, we are going to have to put DPs under secondary sites.
In preparation for this configuration we would like to have a better understanding of how the content will flow to the lower level DPs (under secondary sites).  We are aware that content
being sent to a dp on a secondary site server is compressed at the primary, sent to the secondary and uncompressed.  Here are our questions:
    1.  Will the content for lower level DPs, under the secondary Site, receive its content directly from the primary site DP, or the Secondary Site DP?
    2.  Will the content for the lower level DPs be compressed, sent and uncompressed (from the primary or secondary)?
This information will help determine the network configuration we use to limit our WAN traffic.
I appreciate any insight into these questions you can provide.
    Thanks.

Sorry, but can someone explain #1 more detail?
I have Secondary Site with multiple DPs.
If I distribute the content to only 1 DP at Secondary site (not pull DPs), will the content distribute to the Secondary Site server first, then to the DP? Does the content also available at the SS Server?
Does the data flow like: Primary Site -> Secondary Site -> DP ?

  • Migrate Secondary to Distribution Point - RTM

    Hi,
quick question about a request made in my environment:
We have a huge number of useless secondaries (< 100 clients) over the infrastructure. I would like to change that and use Distribution Points instead of Secondaries.
What i'm looking to do is transform the secondary to a distribution point (easily / scripted).
    2 blocking points:
    - Server must remain the same and formating is not an option
    - RTM Version of SCCM 2012 (doing this to prepare the update this summer and avoid migrating too many secondaries).
If not possible easily then the only option i see is to fetch the list of packages on the DP (All content on a specific distribution point) and create manually the prestage content for each package. But that would take so long that i want to avoid it.

You'll need to test -- as I never have explicitly -- but as long as the long sccmcontentlib folder remains in place and unchanged, a simple uninstall of the secondary and deployment of the DP role *should* (to my knowledge) re-utilize the content (this
isn't explicitly by design either, it's an artifact of the repair process so may not be esxplicitly supported, but it is just content after all). You'll of course have to reassign the content to the DP (which would be really easy if you're using DP groups
or could also be done with PowerShell).

  • Distribution point - question

    Hi
    1. Is there a way I can control the bandwith between 2 sites regarding the distirbution point syncronization
    Requirement:
Pirmary Site --> Send packages to standard distribution point (server DP)  "Link is 3  mb bandwith" and I want to limit 50kb the transfer.
Workstation afftectd in the remote location 100
    2. What is you recommend for type of DP to be used  (standard DP or secondary site with DP)
    Please advise
    Robert

    Hi
You can go to Site Database --> Site Setting(of the primary Site) --> Go to addresses properties of the address you created there is a tab of rate limit you can punch in the rate at what you want the data transfer to be.
This can only be done for site to site communication.
In your case Primary site to secondary site.
Better you replicate package in out of office hours, rather then throtling the bandwidth to certain limit.
3MB bandwidth is not a too good bandwidth for 100 clients where package size is large. Monthly patching package will be minimum of 200 MB size for Security updates itself. I suggest you should go for secondary site with DP role created which will also help
in data transfer(rrporting data) collectively to primary site via Proxy management point role. Also for patching install WSUS console your secondary site Install SUP role then you need to configure it as Active SUP and configure it to sync from upstream
server that will be your Primary site to get the patch information.
Kindly mark this as Answere or helpfull as suitable to you so other can take advantage of similar situation
Based on the question, there are no secondary sites thus most of your answer does not apply to whats been asked and is thus not helpful.

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting in-place distribution point upgrades

I have a shared SCCM 2007 secondary site server that I'd like to upgrade to a SCCM 2012 Distribution Point. I went to the Administration>Migration>Source Hierarchy>Shared Distribution Points and right clicked and hit Upgrade and then proceeded
through the Upgrade Shared Distribution Point Wizard. Then under Administration>Migration>Distribution Point Upgrades, monitored that status, but even though I left it overnight, the status is still "Upgrade distribution point." I checked under
the Monitoring>Distribution Status>Distribution Point Configuration Status and selected the name of my distribution point and noticed that I'd forgotten to add the Site Server's computer account to the local admin group on my Distribution Point Server.
But even though I've corrected that, the status of the upgrade has not changed and there is nothing of note in resource manager indicating that the process is underway.
Are there any additional logs to monitor the progress of the in-place Distribution Point upgrade? Are there any other troubleshooting steps I can do to determine why the status of the upgrade isn't complete?

    Hi all
I would like to share my experience with migrating from SCCM 2007 Distribution Points to SCCM 2012. We have in our test environment 39 secondary site systems with the role of distribution points and I wanted to play with the migration feature "Share
Distribution Point" scenario. In the night in which I had prepared the Secondary sites using the migration wizard, 30 of the 39 sites completed in approximately 3 hours with the status "Completed upgrade distribution point". On all distribution
points the same completion date was entered. It seems that a task at specific times in the background check again whether the migration is complete and the status is consolidated. The remaining 9 Distribution Points were then completed almost exactly after
    12 hours.
I then inquired about the migrated packages. On the night not a single package came in the status 'Targeted'. After about 12 hours I saw at once that now at least the distribution points were recorded in most packages. The status 'Installed' but got no distribution
point. I then startet at about 10 packages an update distribution job. These then became the status of 'Installed' more than 4 hours later. Then the weekend was between and on Monday morning, no other distribution points were listed as 'Installed'. I checked
local on the distribution point, if all of the packages was converted. This was the case, not only the 10 I have updated. The packages then should be available during deployments, I think. But I have not tested it.
If you have looked at a package converted times more precise, the status of most distribution point is 'Unknown'. I then googled for this situation, and I have found this
article. There seems to be a bug which is currently in a solving process.
For me, there are two solutions for this problem:
    1. Waiting for the hotfix and the problem is then solved centrally. By the fact, that we migrate the 340 Secodary Sites in 3 weeks, I don't think that this hotfix will be available.
    2. Depending on the number of distribution points and packages it may be helpful if all 'targeted' packages are again updated. In this 'Unknown' status situation I simply do not know if the packages are really available or not.
I found another problem with the Distribution Point migration. Actually with the migration of SCCM 2007 Secondary Site Server to SCCM 2012 remote Distribution Point, an uninstallation of the secondary site server should be performed. We had tested this with
SCCM 2012 RTM and it was working at that time. With the update to SCCM 2012 SP1 here again seems a problem with the migration to be added. In the SCCM 2007 environment, the Secondary Site Server were removed during migration. But not local uninstalled, even
    after 3 days.
Conclusion to the Distribution Point in SCCM 2012 SP1 migration:
As always, you just have to have patience until the migration jobs are completed. Certain tasks must then be carried out by hand. In my view, the missing log information is the biggest problem. Without the log information I was blind
during the migration. If you only have a short window for migration and like us, that we need to migrate 340 Secondary Site Server in the production environment, the scenario must be carefully considered. We proof now to not migrate the Secondary Sites with
the Migration Wizzard, but start from the ground up a new installation of Distribution Points followed by the necessary sync packages.
    Kind regards Stefan Somogyi

  • Software Updates using distribution points

    Hi,
I have primary site and configured all settings well. Also I installed SUP on the primary site. I have 3 other sites with slow connection. I need to plan SU for them. is it better to create secondary site on the 3 sites or Distribution points will be
    enough for them?
    Thanks,
    Kareem Behery

I agree with Wally. Adding 3 Seconday Sites with a SUP, will add both administrative overhead and make the installation more complex.
As a general rule, I always recomend to go with the simple solution. Then you can always "upgrade" one or more of the sites if you later finds out that you need to.

  • Uninstalling Secondary Site Server through SW Delivery fails

    We have migrated to SCCM2012
and now need to uninstall our
    SCCM 2007 Secondary Siteserver.
Since we have 300 Secondary Site Server
    in the Hirarchy, the uninstall
of the software must be distributed.
We have to create a task sequence,
in which the following steps are
    performed:
Put the server in the SCOM
    Maintenance Mode
    Stop SCCM services SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER
    and SMS_EXECUTIVE
Uninstalling the Secondary Siteserver with the
    Command "{install path} \setup.exe /deinstall"
Cleanup of folders and files that are left
    Restarting the Server
Take server out of the SCOM
    Maintenance Mode
The uninstallation works well on all Windows Server 2008 R2 Server. But not on the Windows Server 2003. There we get errors "Failed to open key Software\Microsoft\SMS\47006C006F00620061006C005C007B00350031004100300031003600420036002D0046003000440045002D0034003700350032002D0042003900370043002D003500340045003600460033003800360041003900310032007D00\SMSTS"
and "MP name must be set in an environment variable" and "Fatal error is returned in execution of the action (Uninstall Secondary Site). The system cannot find the file specified. (Error: 80070002; Source: Windows)".
After this errors, the Task Sequence Deployment aborts.
Has anybody a solution for this situation?

    Hi,
When removing a secondary site using the Delete Secondary Site Wizard, you must choose whether to delete or uninstall the secondary
    site:
Deleting the site will delete all information about the site and its resources from the Configuration Manager site database at its
parent site, but it will leave the Configuration Manager secondary site installed on the secondary site computer. Select this option if you have already manually uninstalled the secondary site using Configuration Manager Setup at the secondary site computer.
When Configuration Manager 2007 sites are deleted, the deleted site information is only deleted from the deleted site's direct parent site. Site deletion
information is not propagated up the hierarchy to grandparent sites. In order to delete the site from the site database at sites above the deleted site's direct parent site, the hierarchy maintenance tool (Preinst.exe) must be run on every primary site above
the deleted site's parent primary site using the command Preinst /delsite. For more information about the hierarchy maintenance tool, see
    Hierarchy Maintenance Tool (Preinst.exe).
    Refer to:
How to Remove a Secondary Site Using the Configuration Manager Console
    Thanks, Prabha G

  • Troubleshoot Distribution Point Updates Failing

What are the best logs to look at for determining problems with
distribution points?  We have 5 DPs.  2 of the DPs are failing to get
distributed content.  Both of these systems are remote sites so it could
be due to network latency, but I need some logs to help narrow this
    down.
I am watching the distmgr.log.  I see the following entry showing its
retrying.  The only other red messages are related to a DP that is
currently offline at the moment.  Two of my DPs updated successfully.
The other two keep showing as Failed to distribute content.
Failed to process package BR100013 after 12 retries, will retry 88
