Replace Time Capsule Hard disk

A WESTERN DIGITAL Hard disk Caviar Red WD30EFRX 3.5" - 3 TB is a good choice to replace hard disk inside the Time Capsule 2nd generation?

Sure, that will work fine.. as would the WD Green.. as far as TC is concerned there is no real difference.. the Red is designed to work in multi-disk NAS but is very little different to the Green.. you are paying for the syncing with multiple disks.. since TC has only one disk then there is no real advantage to the Red.. Since Apple uses all WD green in the later models I would have no issue using them.. and I have usually upgraded to greens.. although I don't think they are the best disks on the market.. they are the cheapest.

  • WiFi bandwidth required to access Time Capsule hard disk

    Hey all,
Recently I moved, switched, houses. In this new house I have put my Time Capsule in the living room, and my computer is in the bedroom.
Ever since I did that, I had troubles accessing Time Capsule hard drive. It would often get disconnected, Time Machine could not "find backup disk", streaming video was not working, and more.
At first I thought that in the move I managed to bump TC a bit too hard and that maybe hard drive itself was damaged. Then I moved my MBP to kitchen, to do some work there (kitchen overlooks living room, there is a direct visual link to TC from there, no walls in between).
Taaa-daaaa! Connection to Time Capsule and the hard drive inside was perfect again.
However, all of the WiFi signal indicators, on both my Mac and other iOS devices are full when I am in my bedroom. The signal is therefore strong enough to make these devices think there is a 5/5 signal quality. But obviously that is wrong signaling. Not even Air Port utiliy gave any clues that even tho WiFi signal was 5/5 the actual bandwidth was not even close sufficient for optimal access to Time Capsule's hard disk. Which is just silly.
Dear Apple, would it be possible to implement some sort of speed check into Air Port Utility which actually checks _REAL_ state of bandwidth and then advises what to do; "Please move closer to the Time Capsule Basestation, bandwidth is too low to access".
I will say it again; the WiFi indicators are all 5/5, and everything regarding regular internet access and similar works awesome. But connection to hard disk obviously requires epic signal strength and no software indicates that.

If the Time Capsule is providing a wireless network signal, an Internet connection does not need to exist to move files from the Mac to the Time Capsule, or vice versa.
Log onto the Time Capsule wireless network
    Open Macintosh HD
Look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder named Data (unless you have renamed it) will appear to the right
Double click Data to mount the drive on the Mac's desktop
Open the drive on the desktop and you can drag/drop files over to the destination that you choose on the Mac.
Once the file transfer is complete, double check to make sure that the files are back on your Mac and everything is working properly. Then, you can erase the Time Capsule hard drive.

  • Time Capsule Hard Disk Upgrade - how can I move old backup to new HD

Yesterday I bought a new 3TB hard disk to replace the old, internal time capsule 1TB hard disk. Then I placed the old one in a 3.5" USB case and tried to move the TM back-up from the old HD (now usb connected to the mac) to the new (now)-internal HD of the Time Capsule (connected with ethernet to the mac).
I'm using mavericks, and I followed this guide, but something went wrong and the migration stopped during the night, forcing me today to start a new backup from zero.
I deeply googled, looking for a guide that could explain how to complete the upgrade without a glitch, but there are infinite number of guide on how to change hard disk, while a totality of zero guides on how to complete the migration process after upgrading the internal HD.
Has someone succeeded in doing all the process?
    System Information:
              • • OSX Version - 10.9.1          • • Type of Mac - MacMini mid-2011
              • • What's being backed-up - 501,74 GB
              • • Backup Location - Time Capsule - WiFi (usually - but Ethernet during migration process) - 2nd generation, Model A1302 1TB (now 3TB).
P.S. Do you have any suggestion for "Impossible to convert __. Installa newer version of iWork." It happens all the time i try to move Backups.backupdb from a USB HD to a new one (yes, I remove the check mark from "Ignore ownership on this volume").

I don't see anything you have done wrong.
The fact that it started to copy the file and you left it running is fine.
Where things go wrong from there is anyones guess.. did the computer just decide to go to sleep?? Have you turned off sleep and any auto shut down. That can affect copying of large files.
Did you verify the sparsebundle.. any error or corruption in the old sparsebundle could prevent it copying.
    See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
It could be later firmware which IMHO is just not stable.. I would run no later than 7.6.1 in an old TC.
And of course Mavericks.. it uses an major change of networking protocol.. and so it could just decide in the middle of the night that the TC is no longer there.
forcing me today to start a new backup from zero.
Can I just say.. this is a better idea anyway.
Put the old disk in a draw.. and simply keep it for 6months and if you never need it by then .. you can wipe it and use it for something else. A clean fresh TM backup is far more likely to work properly in case you need to do a recovery especially if you upgrade installed Mavericks.

  • Time capsule hard disk spinning out of control

My TC's hard disk out of of the blue yesterday started spinning louder than it usually does and cuasing it to emit a whirring, grinding like sound which acclerated to the point I thought the tc was either going to become airborn and/or explode or both.
The tc was not living in unusal condions both enviroment, configuration or extreme temperature variations. It was on a seperate return portion of my desk with nothing around it to crowd or adversly affect. Configuration is ethernet to comcast smc business gateway over the wan port and a direct ethernet to thunderbolt conx to my macbook pro retina and finally a sonos bridge was connected as well.
At the time this occured I had not been putting the tc through anything more unusal than providing DHCPservices for my local area network in my house.
When I plug it back in its spits and tries to spin but gives up and the status light remains solid amber. it will not reset either as far as changing from solid amber to blinking to open airport utility.
its a first generation 500gb tc, however it is the third device genius bar has replaced since i purchased originally in Apr 2009? each time genius bar has replaced it through apple care on my mac as a peripheral device covered by applecare they have strangly had three! of the original (same 2008/9 model to replace the failed one which none to date has ever had any of the sympotons i describe here. just trouble accessing files. Now my fear is I no longer have the imac w/apple care the tc was covered by but I have a new macbook pro retina which I bought in December and is still under warranty so i wanted to try and economize and wait to by apple care later this spring.
all my backups are on the tc 500 gigs worth plus I need the router support as i have comcast business class and they dont offer a wifi cable modem. I'm frantic that I will get nothing from apple care or genius bar but the same bland, robotic like detatchment all apple employees seem to be secretly instructed to treat its custromers with these days as they maddeningly tell me to buy a newer tc for $299 or $399 that i simply dont have the money to do so and dont antcipate having it at all in the next 6 months especially snce I just shelled out 2 grand in Decemeber for the new macbook pro retina. Especially saddened I coud have potentially lost all of my photos and my 60 or so gigs of itunes media purchased entirely from itunes fair and square for the  past decade to the tune of twenty thousand dollars!

I am reading through the boards here and it sounds as though there was a small fraction of those who purchased the orignal tc in the spring of 2008 who have experinced the same issues exactly. It also sounds as though Apple ackowledged this to those who complained with a replacement of a later generation tc AND conceeded to those affected that there was indeed a design flaw. Astonishingly, Apple did not issue a press release nor a product recall!
As I said Genius Bar here in San Francisco did replace the device three times but with the exact same model. The most recent swap was in Jan of 2012.
I am sick to death of being disregarded and abused by Apple everytime I experience a valid hardware issue or reuire tech support period. Since 2004 I have faithfully purchased Apple Care agreements with nearly every device I've purchased and this one time when I try to save a little money by waiting untill the 90 day warranty on my macbook pro I purchased in Dec 2012 is close to expiring AS advised "off the record" by more than one Apple Care advisor.

  • I can't access my Time Capsule hard disk.

Just do not mount the hard disc, or the Time Capsule's hard disk or external HDD, but if I can connect to internet through it .. What is it the problem?
A week ago if I could access the hard disks

Restart the TC.. you are most likely using Lion.. Lion has a nasty habit of forgetting where the TC is.
If that fails.. reset the TC and start again.

  • Lost my mapping from my PC to the time capsule hard disk. Cannot remap

I have lost my network drive (Z) on my PC to the TC hard disk. Now I cannot re map to the TC's hard drive.

Is it working to another computer??
    Can you ping the TC??
Are you running bonjour and or airport utility for windows?? Can airport utility see the TC?
Are you using TC and wireless names, with spaces and special characters.. please cease and desist from so doing.. all windows names must be short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
Have you set the right workgroup?
Have you set guest access to on?
    How old is the TC?
If it is more than one year.. try updating firmware to 7.5.2 .. if you are on 7.6.x this is downgrade that will work better.. hold the Control or ALT key to see available firmware.. (forget which  alt probably to correspond to the options key on a Mac).
In explorer type in the address bar
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
Obviously replacing with actual TC name or IP.

  • Time Capsule Hard Disk Disappears from Windows 7 PC without changing anything on the PC, then reappears for no reason. Any Ideas what would cause this?

Now spent hours trying to fix this problem. I am using a disk password, When I go into the explorer, around 1/4 of the time the timecapsule appears in the browse, and the other 3/4's it can not be found. I can leave the pc, then come back after a while and the disk is back.

i'd also like to add that the time capsule is still recognised on the mac partition of my macbook pro, and also both mac and windows xp (as a network drive) on my iMac!

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • Time Capsule Hard Drive - Disk Repair and NAT

When the "original item" can't be found on the time capsule hard drive, how does one go about connecting TC to a computer to run a disk utility to repair the TC hard drive? By the way, I was merrily rolling along with TC until this morning. Suddenly, there is a network issue and I can't connect to the internet because of the DHCP range and the hard drive can't be found. Talk about the double whammy!

"because of the DHCP range" means weak signal or interference

How can I delete everything from my Time Capsule?  Disk Utility only gives me the choices of First Aid and Restore.

How can I delete everything from my Time Capsule?
Disk Utility would be used for an internal hard drive on your Mac, or for a drive that was attached directly using USB or FireWire.
The Time Capsule is a network drive. Disk Utility cannot be used for this type of drive.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a minute or so. This would be fine if you plan to keep the Time Capsule yourself.
If you plan to sell the Time Capsule, you would want to use a more secure erase, like "Zero Out", which will likely take 4-6 hours or so since everything on the drive will be replaced with zeros.

  • How can I access the time capsule hard drive via ethernet?

I recently bought a new laptop, as my old one was sadly stolen. I'm trying to connect to my backed up time capsule hard drive via ethernet to retrieve my files, but it doesn't seem to work. Oddly enough I have no issues over wifi. When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network. I have a MacBook Air with an ethernet adapter if that makes any difference. I'm also running the latest OS X and firmware. Wifi is simply too slow for this restoration process, so any suggestions?
Could I possibly connect via USB? What kind of cable would that require? Is the ethernet issue a problem with my settings?
    Help greatly appreciated

In the Network panel of System Preferences do you have an Ethernet connection item on the left? If not, authenticate if necessary by clicking on the lock, then click the plus sign at the bottom of that column and add an Ethernet item.
When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network.
How are you doing that switching? When you switch to Ethernet do you have connectivity to the Internet? If not, do you see a tiny green light on the Time Capsule next to the Ethernet socket you're using?
Could I possibly connect via USB?
    No.

  • Playing media files from Time Capsule hard drive

    Hello folks,
I am using my 3TB Time Capsule to host all of my video files, most of which are MKV files. I also have an external hard drive connected to the USB port on Time Capsule and there are few video files on it as well.
I am using Time Capsule as a router sitting between the cable modem (WAN) and my locan network (LAN). I have an Argosy HV355T digital media player hooked up to my home theater and TV via HDMI. It is connected to Time Capsule via Ethernet.
On Argosy media player, I am able to connect to Time Capsule (login is successful) but I can neither see the hard drives nor their contents.
When I connect the external hard drive to the USB port on Argosy, the hard drive is recognized and files from it can be read and played. Thus I have ruled out the possibility of Argosy being unable to read Mac formats.
I try to use uPnP on Argosy to connect as uPnP client to Time Capsule, but nothing happens. I thought uPnP is turned ON by default on Time Capsule.
Why am I not able to see the Time Capsule hard drive from my media player?
What am I missing in my setup?
Do I need to install a media server device to read files from hard drives and storage, and stream to media player (Argosy)?
How are you folks using Time Capsule to play video from its hard drive on to TV?
    Thanks.

The TC has no upnp.. no Apple device does.. Apple refused to join and went off in a huff, sat in the corner and created their own.. NAT-PMP.. which as you can imagine.. doesn't work with anything else but Apple stuff.
So first issue.. no upnp but that isn't a biggie.
SMB file protocol which the rest of the world uses.. has rules which Apple also breaks.
Make sure your TC is setup with all short names. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
On the file sharing page of the airport utility.. (you may need to use 5.6 from Mac or Windows), ensure that you set a workgroup.. generally now WORKGROUP. And make sure you turn on the guest account to full read and write permissions.
It would be good to ensure a normal windows computer can access the TC..
In windows explorer type in the address bar
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where you replace with actual name or IP).
I do not know the Argosy player but I will look it up.
My hacked ATV1 can see and play files from the TC. That is running XMBC of course.

  • Time Capsule Hard Drive Problems

I attempted to erase the free space on our Time Capsule using disk utility. The process froze at the stage "creating secondary temporary file". At this point I force quitted disk utility and restarted both the computer and time capsule. After, I found that Time Capsule was reporting it had only 1.14gb free when it actually has 1.3tb free, and the existing backup images, although available, can be mounted but the files are not available. Moreover, when I have an image mounted from time capsule disk utility will not open, so I cannot verify the drive.
When I attempt to mount an image from Time Capsule I get the error log:
    14/09/2012 16:56:05.595 com.apple.Finder: AFPFSMapIDName afpfsMapIDNameFSCTL returned -1, errno: 2
Any ideas why time machine is behaving this way? Can anyone think of some remedies? I dont want to wipe the time capsules hard drive because it has years worth of backups on it.

I would try and copy the sparsebundle/s to another drive.
This will take an age 2 ages and half an age.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Then erase the TC entirely from airport utility.
I would recommend you then start over.. keep the copy of the sparsebundle as archive version.
You do know you should have archived the disk before you started playing don't you!!

  • Time Capsule Hard Drive not showing up in Windows machine

I have Time Capsule showing up perfectly on my two Macooks, but my windows laptop from work cannot see the Time Capsule hard drive at all. I have successfully logged onto Time Capsule as a wireless network and am able to use the Internet fine, but I still can't see time capsule anywhere in Windows Explorer or my network places?
I turned off Windows firewall and re-install Bonjour for Windows, but that didn't help either. I thought Time Capsule was just supposed to show up in my system after I access the network? Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I set up my TC and installed Airport Utility on two PCs running Windows XP. On the first machine, the hard disk didn't show up, but on the second PC it showed up automatically mapped to Z:\. To fix this problem, I just opened the Airport Utility on the problem PC and looked up the IP address of the TC. I typed in the URL based on the IP address and it came up fine as \\10.0.0.1 showing another folder called 'Time Capsule'. You can easily map a drive to this folder by going to the start menu, right-click on My Computer, and select map network drive.

  • Time capsule hard drive starts/stops every 5 min: problem?

Every five minutes, whether or not a time machine backup is due, my 1 TB time capsule hard drive starts, spools up, then stops (I used a stopwatch to time the interval).  Is this a problem?  Never happened when unit was new (late 2010), or before Lion.

    Yes, it is a problem..
Firstly check the log if there is a lot of instances of AFP getting logged in and off again.
Try disconnecting everything that is ethernet connected to the TC.. does it still happen.. if yes, turn off all the wireless stuff and see if it still happens.
If it still happens disconnect the wan.
There simply may not be anything you can do about it.. Lion has altered the setting for spotlight to analyse the drive.. but the new firmware also seems to make it worse. Not sure if you can stop it or not.. but it will cause issues over time.. in fact it would be better if the hard disk never spun down than to do it on 5min interval especially if the disk is also parking the heads.
How desperately do you want to pursue the problem??
I would suggest wiping the current setup. And even erase the drive after copying anything you need off it. So you get it back to scratch. You can ring applecare if it is still under warranty. I am not sure they will treat it seriously.
