Replace W540 Keyboard with W541 Trackpoint Buttons

Could someone from Lenovo let the forum know if it will be possible to replace the W540 Trackpad / Bezel / Keyboard assembly with the new one from the W541 which has integrated physical Trackpoint buttons.  This would make a very big difference to me and I suspect a lot of other W540 owners who use the Trackpoint. I am the current owner of 5 Thinkpads and have been a loyal customer since the 600 series. The increased pressure necessary to generate a less reliable click on the Trackpad has greatly exacerbated a problem with the top joint of my right thumb - I have had to retrain myself to use my left thumb to do all clcking.  The problem was nowhere near as bad on the old Trackpoint buttons - where I could use them with my right thumb for several hours with no symptoms, I can now manage only minutes.

i too am EXTREMELY frustrated with the trackpoint.  I also agree as to WHY the USB 2.0 instead of four (4) USB 3.0s. I have been a trackpoint fan since the late 80s which triggered my purchase of an IBM T21 still working having a Windows 98se operatring system.  My next was a T42p having a Windows XP Pro ServPk 3.  My third is a W500 for which I purchased a Microsoft Windows 7 Pro Operating System.  My fourth is an x220 having a 500 GB solid state Hard Drive (upgrade from the 160 GB SSD as supplied).  The fifth is the W540.  It has high end upgrades of all components including a 1 Terabyte SSD I purchased and installed myself.  I installed the 500 GB it came with in my W500. I read about the trackpoint problems with the W540 before purchasing but had no idea how SERIOUS the problem is until I purchased one!  This Lenovo forum is LOADED with complaints and appropriate requests by dedicated Lenovo users to replace the Keyboard with a USABLE trackpoint.  I am not surprised!  I am a Professional Engineer having had my own consulting business for 15 years.  I took a course in customer service during which I was informed of the results of NOT FIXING A PROBLEM FOR A CUSTOMER.  It has a probable devastatilng affect on future sales, etc. Personnally I have always found your customer service acceptable...better with some techs than others probably depending on experience.  It is extremely important you fix the problem with the trrackpoint ASAP AT NO COST TO YOUR CUSTOMERS.  I haven't had the W540 very long but it's only fair to be upfront that it will be my last if IBM-Lenovo fails to fulfill a MAJOR NEED of it's otherwise dedicated customers.  All else failing issue a recall and credit the owner toward a properly engineered replacement.  My big questions for IBM-LENOVO are WHAT WERE YOU THINKING and WHAT WAS THE MOTIVE?  Lastly I also concur with the USB Port error (WHY USB 2.0 since 3.0 ports are backward compatible).  A minor problem for me personnaly is the inclusion of the number pad.  It throws the trackpoint and the keyboard as typed on off center.  However both of those are minor in comparison the nearly 'useless' trackipoint.

  • X220 keyboard - broken middle trackpoint button

The middle trackpoint button of my keyboard stopped to work (it has to be pressed very hard). I took picture of it showing what exactly was broken.
Notice that the black plastic part got separated from the base metal plate causing the middle button stopped to work.I just want to share it because it might be a quality issue.
I contacted local Lenovo service and got a new keyboard replacement. Unfortunately it is different (compatible) part number. The new keyboard 45N2219 has much more soft feel than the old one 45N2149

Yes, I feel it is well. Moreover there are noticeable differences in X220 keyboard FRUs.
My original X220 keyboard 45N2149 was nearly as perfect as the best ever one - X31 keyboard. Unfortunately the middle trackpoint button stopped to work in few days (see pictures here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-keyboard-broken-middle-trackpoint-button/... ) that I got replacement from Lenovo, but different FRU 45N2219.
    The new 45N2219 keyboard:
    - is softer than original one
    - the trackpoint button sticks out above the keyboard buttons caps way too much and can not be pushed back down. This is probably source of the unpleasant trackpoint feel.
    - is noisier than original one
    - Backspace and Return (big square one shaped) keys started to make horrible squeaky noises in few hours. Lenovo refused to replace the keyboard again because of this so I decided to fix it myself. I poped off both keys and found that the hinge points weren't greased at all. I put missing teflon-based grease to both keys.
    - key caps does not seem to be perfectly attached to the key mechanism so they have a "flying" feel when you are pressing the key cap
I would rather have the old keyboard FRU than this one. If I had known that there are such differences in X220 keyboards I would rather try to live with broken trackpoint middle button.
I still think about buying a new keyboard because there is a local service parts reseller that is able to deliver the exact keyboard FRU you want. On the other hand I feel a bit stupid of doing this considering I've paid for 4 yrs + Protection warranty upgrade ...

  • Replace noraml keyboard with Backlight Keyboard

    Hello,
I am using HP Pavilion DV6-6C02tx for 6 months. Every thing seems fine, the only thing problematic to me is that it doesn't has a backlight keyboard. I just want to ask if there is any way to replace my keyboard with backlight keyboard. How can I find that my motherboard supports backlight keyboard or not?

Reviewing the keyboards on page 64 of this guide, I don't see a backlit keyboard listed.  It is very likely this particular unit doesn't support backlighted keyboards since none are listed.

    Hi there @vishnupraneethr
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
In answer to your request, I am attaching the HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide. Within you can find the procedure for replacing the keyboard correctly, as well as as the part numbers for the supported, compatible keyboards. Check on page 59 of the manual for the list of replacement keyboards, and the replacement procedure.
Unfortunately, from the list, it does not appear that any of the options are backlit.
    I hope this helps.

  • Replace W520 keyboard with backlit W530 keyboard?

Is it possible to replace the keyboard on a W520 with an equivalent, backlit W530 keyboard?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is not possible to do a direct hardware replacement. The bezel is different and the scan codes for the keyboard (which are supported by the BIOS) are different on the keyboards.

  • Replacing Nonbacklit Keyboard with Backlit Keyboard

I am considering replacing a nonbacklit keyboard with a backlit keyboard on a T530. The hardware maintenance manual does not seem to show any difference between replacing nonbacklit or backlit keyboards.  The size and dimensions of each keyboard should be the same but I am concerned about possibly different connectors.  Has anybody tried it?

I did the upgrade on a T430 and it was plug and play, not difference in connectors.

  • Keyboard with Power On Button?

I just purchased a 2012 MacBook Pro, which I'm using most of the time as a desktop system with external monitors. I have this married to an Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Keyboard-Numeric-MB110LL-VERSION/dp/B005DLDTAE/ref=c m_cr_pr_product_top
Although the setup works great there is no way to power on the MacBook Pro without opening the clamshell first. Is there another keyboard that enables me to power on the MacBook Pro (whiled closed) from the keyboard?
    Thanks!

    not a problem

  • Would love to see a USB numerical keyboard with trackpoint device.

    Hi Lenovo,
I have a new computer but miss my trackpoint terribly. Searched the web for a portable replacement but there seem to be only touchpads or trackball solutions out there. I think your numerical keyboard with a trackpoint would have been a perfect match.
    Best regards

Maybe you can buy two Lenovo products, one is the latest ThinkPad Compact Bluetooth or USB Keyboard with TrackPoint, another is a ThinkPad Numpad.

  • Can I replace my A1226 model keyboard with one from a model A1260?

My A1226 keyboard has dead keys, somebody is parting out their A1260--Can I replace my keyboard with theirs?

Well, you didn't mention what hardware was involved.
It's difficult to know if laptop keyboards are interchangeable between different models. Typically the keyboards are made for the computer so unless the keyboards are exactly the same they may not be interchangeable. You can give it a try. You could also contact ifixit.com to see if they know.
