Replace what?

I am working on (well likely screwing up) a PowerBook G4 15" which I sent into Apple awhile back. Their response to me was there was water damage... well they could have told me an elephant stepped on it and I would have believed that over the water. The also told me they would send me pictures, and of course they never did. I did not pay for the repair/and they let this go without a problem.
I decided to get the 15" out, mostly to take it apart - I like puzzles, except when they have these cheap screws that are stripped right away. When I sent it in initially, it was for the optical drive, plus when you went to boot it, you would hear a chime, the optical making a bit of noise (there is still a disk stuck inside) then it would just go black. So now that I have it apart, I have no idea what I should replace.
I sent my iBook in today for service and asked if they had any history on the 15". My 17" just came back - won't go there - any idea if the extra ram from the 15" would fit the 17"?
If you have any ideas, I would appreciate them - please don't say you have to just have it all tested, 'cause I likely won't do that. For some reason I thought if I took it apart and put it back together it would work. A bit Lame! HA!
Does anyone know where to find cheap used parts? It's not worth a big investment for me.
Thanks
P.s. I haven't seen any sign of water damage... unless there is a secret dot that changes color (like a cell phone) - my 16 year old did it in and said she did nothing! (I kind of believe her). The oldest did something to the iBook, where she says she did nothing - sad to say, I'm not believing her!

- As far as I know, there are no water detecting dots in the Powerbooks or any other Apple product.
- Depending on which 15 and 17 you have, yes, the RAM might fit the 17. Check the specifications of the RAM for each one here - http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/
- <pre>drutil eject</pre> might work, but failing that, I'd start by replacing the optical drive. http://www.ifixit.com is highly recommended, as is a good, sharp, #00 philips head screwdriver and a spudger (both available from ifixit.com too)

  • Does TM overwrite or just replace what's missing?

When I went on a business trip recently I had to delete about 15GB worth of music from iTunes to free up some hard drive space. When I got home i hooked up my iPhone to sync it and thought it would transfer all the music I had deleted. Needless to say it only transferred the purchased content and not my older tracks from physical CDs.
Anyways... now I would like to go into Time Machine and replace JUST the files that I am now missing. However, this would be a laborious process so I would prefer to just click on the iTunes folder as a whole.
My question is: would this overwrite my current one and therefore delete any new files ive purchased? Or just replace what's missing?
    Thanks in advance!

TM gives you several options when you are restoring something. you can skip restoring files, you can overwrite them or you can keep both the original and the backed up copy. however, when you do this to a whole folder it will replace the whole folder. so this is not convenient in your case. what i suggest you do is copy your current itunes library to a different location (say, to the desktop) and then restore the old one replacing the current one completely. then import music from the copy you made on the desktop.

Can I install the latest version 10.8.4 in 1,1 model?
If it is possible, what I have to do to get it done? And the price?

MacBookPro1,1 can only run Mac OS X 10.6.8, as it has got a 32-bit processor.
If you order replacement DVDs, Apple will send you DVDs with the original Mac OS X version that came with your Mac, in this case, Mac OS X 10.4.5.
If you decide to get replacement DVDs, Apple will only charge you for the delivery

  • IMac Seagate HD replacement - What do Apple do with the old hard drives?

    Hi
A relative has a 2009 iMac and his 1TB Seagate hard drive is covered by the replacement programme.  He is concerned what Apple will do with the hard drive when it is returned to them as he does not want any to access his personal items (like docs, photos and emails etc).
He is currently using ML and has everything backed up to an external hd.
He plans to reload Snow Leopard which originally came with his iMac.  Using the SL disc, it will give him the option before installing - in Disk Utility to wipe the HD (Gutmann Theory) x 35 times so a very secure wipe.  Is this over the top as going to take days to do this to a 1TB drive.  Are there any better ways to do this.
We have an Apple store and Apple Premiem Reseller and Support Centre, but the reseller has a faster turnaround for repair.  Does anyone know what Apple do with faulty hard drives other than bin them?
    Thanks in advance.

Gutmann algorithm 35-pass secure erase is not available as an option from the GUI, but is still available from command line aka Terminal.
    diskutil secureErase
Usage:  diskutil secureErase [freespace] level MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
Securely erases either a whole disk or a volume's freespace.
Level should be one of the following:
            0 - Single-pass zeros.
            1 - Single-pass random numbers.
            2 - US DoD 7-pass secure erase.
            3 - Gutmann algorithm 35-pass secure erase.
            4 - US DoE 3-pass secure erase.
Ownership of the affected disk is required.
Note: Level 2, 3, or 4 secure erases can take an extremely long time.

  • Hard drive replacement:  what is needed to reload all Adobe applications on new drive

Question:  in the olden days, we needed to deactive applications before re-loading on a new device ... what do we need to do now with the subscription plans and/or the non-subscription apps such as DW?
    Windows 7x64
    replacing primary hard drive
    Installed Adobe applications:
    Dreamweaver CS5
    Photoshop CC
    Photoshop CC 2014
    Bridge CCx64
    Lighroom 5.5
    Adobe Creative Cloud
    Adobe DNG Converter

You'll have to install from scratch, from the original media.
In the case of different versions of one and the same application, be very sure to install the older versions first.  Otherwise the installer for the older version will not work if it finds a newer version installed,
If the drive is going into the same machine, you "shouldn't" have to deactivate, but with the hapless installer team one never knows.
If necessary, you can always deactivate after the fact.
If you have Photoshop CC2014, you have no need and no use for the DNG Converter.

  • After FIVE replacements, what course of action is next?

I have had five replacements for my ONE macbook. I've emailed Steve Jobs about this issue and I'm currently working with an Executive Relations representative. The ER rep. is really nice and he's really helpful, but the thing is, I'm getting tired of these defects on the Macbook. So, now I'm at a crossroad. I can either get a replacement AGAIN, or I can get a refund and take my business elsewhere. What should I do? I've been looking into some Vista laptops and I've used Vista. I've been also weighing my options and been thinking about Leopard. Oh... what do I do? Any suggestions?

Screen flickers are definite issues and should be addressed. In fact, my current one has that issue along with another.
I truly want to stay with Apple, I mean I love Apple... it was my first computer experience, back in 96. I was just a child then. I was stunned when they released OS X. I love everything about Apple, but I can't keep having issues. I mean 5 times!
I'm seriously really torn right now. I've used Vista and it's nice, but at the same time, I'm used to Mac OS X now.

  • I bought a brand new iPhone that Apple support says it is a replacment, what shall I do?

I bought a brand new iPhone 4 that has started to over-heat, since the first usage, and when I tried to contact Apple support online, they ask for the serial number for the phone that when entered it said "this serial number is for a product that has been replaced, please enter the replacment serial number for warranty info etc..
What shall I do to get a replacement(for the overheat problem)? even though I bought it brand new!!!!
Not to mention the main problem that got me into this which is the excessive heat that makes using the iphone 4 impossible!!!

Well, it is not a well known retailer and I am sure that going to him and telling him this won't make a difference to him, he might be even not aware of the whole thing.
Rather than not having an Apple retail store here in Jordan, if I want to let Apple check the iphone I'll have to DHL it to a country with Apple retail store available in it!

  • FDM Load Methods - Merge and Replace What is going on behind the scenes?

    Hello All
We are using FDM to load Peoplesoft Files into Hyperion planning and ultimately Essbase.
I am wondering what is actually going on within Planning, and ultimately Essbase, when the Replace option is selected when loading, and also the Merge option.
Is it performing different cleardata options, and what criteria is it using to fix on?
    Thanks

    Hello,
The clear statement that is being executed can be found in two places.
It can be found as a pure statement in the FDM Logs (Analysis -> Log -> Adapter/Master Adapter: Load)
It can be found in the coding form in the Adapter -> Load action (found in the Workbench)
    Hopefully this helps...

  • IPhone 5 Replacement, what are the conditions?, how is my condition?

Hey guys, i just recently bought an used iPhone 5. the phone has guarantee until 2nd Feb 2014
    So, here's my problem
on the first day of my new phone, suddenly the microphone for FaceTime, Video recording, and telephone is not working
i've asked the guy on apple store, he said that they can fix it for 10 minutes, or they can replace it with a new one (which is very very nice).
so then i made a schedule for Genius Bar on next monday 16th Des.
What do you think guys?, will i get a replacement?
thank you so much for your opinion/answers

    TimothyJohnJ wrote:
so, it depends on me whether i want to replace it with a new refurbished one or stay with the old phone?
    Correct.
    TimothyJohnJ wrote:
the thing is, mine is now a bit messed up, on the top right corner, the guy who sold this phone had dropped it, so its a bit bent and cracked now. will they able to replace it? thank you
In that case, it may be better to get a refurbished phone. Note that the Apple Retail Store may charge you for it, but if not, much better

  • Adobe replacement - What's out there other then Adobe Acrobat

I am tired of messing with Adobe Acrobat, is there another Mac friendly program I could use that adequately replaces Acrobat?

It depends on the nature of your interaction with Acrobat, also you don't mention whether you mean Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Reader.
PDFClerk Pro can perform many of the functions of either Reader or Acrobat Pro and do so more efficiently, and it can even do things Acrobat Pro can't. On the other hand there is functionality in the Adobe offerings (especially Acrobat Pro) that you won't find in either PDFClerk Pro, or PDFPen (Pro). So without specifically knowing what your needs are, it is hard to say which alternatives are viable for you.
You can easily try these software packages though. PDFClerk Pro, for example, is downloadable as a fully functioning demo (with the single limitation that in demo mode all output is stamped with a watermark), so you can see for yourself whether it would fit your needs.

  • Macbook Pro3,1 - LCD Replacement - What is the Model Number?

had an accident with my LCD tonight, in which I closed my macbook - with a USB stick still sitting on the keyboard!!!
So, new screen it is, and need to source another screen. I've seen some of the videos on replacing the screen and might be prepared to give it a go - but I'm confused as to what the model number is of the LCD that I am replacing. How can I find this out? Will probably buy from ebay.
I've connected the laptop to a monitor to access the Apple info, but cannot see a model type for the LCD.
I'm pretty sure that it is a backlight LED model that I have. It's a 2.2GHz Intel Core Duo, with a glossy screen. Bought it in September 2007.
    Thanks

    Bummer!
A good source of this type of information is PowerBook Medic. Here is a link:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=16893&cat=0&page=1
From what they say, it looks like you do have the LED model.
PowerBook Medic is a good resource, as you can determine exactly what you need and get a baseline price for what it might cost.
    Good luck!

  • I need a replacement, what are my options...

So here's the story... A few months ago I was carrying my iPhone in my back pocket when I slipped and fell. The screen is surprisingly fine, but the home button is kinda hard to work and the sleep button doesn't work. Everything other than that on the phone worked fine. Haven't had any problems till recently, a few months later. Here lately, everyone is saying my phone sounds real staticy on the other end and they can barely hear me. Now, the mic doesn't work at all occasionally. Is there anything I can do to get this phone replaced, I have my warranty till Nov. 20th 2009.

You can make an appointment at your local Genius Bar (Apple Store).
If they determine the iphone to be defective they will replace.

I've had my phone since last November, so I'm rushing to sort this out because my garuntee will run out soon! I'm in a residential college and my phone keeps Sim failing up to thirty times a day at least! had this problem ever since I got the phone, gone to the orange store and they sent me to apple, I dont have an apple store anywhere near where I live different customer services tell me different things, change your sim, update and have tried both, my temperary solution is to re boot my phone but because i dont know when it sim fials till I look at my phone, I only find out thatt I've missed inportant phone calls and old messages when I turn it back on, then five minutes later it Sim Fails again! I'm so frustrated because obvously I'm away form home and its been a buger to sort out I htink I've just ran out of choices. Got an expensive phone, on an expensive contract, when it doens't even work properly, bad signal, bad internet connection, dont know what else to do!

Is the phone carrier locked to O2 (sounds like it is)?  Unless your friend requested they unlock it before giving it to you (ie. while it was still on an account on their network), it will be carrier locked to them.
You can contact O2 and ask them about unlocking it (they do support unlocking) but I don't know what they will tell you now that the account is closed and it is off their network.  Regardless, they are the only ones who can help you with a phone locked to their network.
