Replaced display

I had to remove my display on a Compaq Presario 2100 notebook to replace a broken arm. Now the display only has a back light and does not boot. After looking at the service manual pg. 2-23 it is saying that the EEPROM needs to be reprogramed. Is there an easy fix? The computer some times will boot with the short start up sound playing, but no display just the back light.

I understand after replacing an arm on your notebook's chassis the display is no longer working and only has a backlight.
The EEPROM is something that should not be tampered with as it will require 3rd party software to be programmed outside of the HP service center. The most likely solution is that the display cable was not connected properly or has come loose after changing the arm.
Follow this guide to make sure all of the connections are seated firmly: Service Manual.
try using an external display to rule out GPU issues. If a VGA display works fine the display will need to be replaced if reseating the connection does not work. You can replace the display by using the part numbers available in the guide, or by contacting HP Phone Support to set up service/repair for the notebook if available. You can contact HP Technical Support at 1-800-474-6836 in North America.     There are two screens there. One is an LED and one is a regular TFT panel. They do not interchange. There are two prices for each type; one with exchange of the old broken unit and one without. I suggest removing your panel and checking the back of it for the part number or if you have your original box it should say in the specs which type of panel you have. Those prices are a bit high and you can do better in the replacement market online or on eBay.

  • LCD Problem -- Replace display or use MBP as desktop?

    Internal video is usually dead on my MBP 3,1 -- dark grey screen (but not black) with various vertical stripes. External display works fine. Internal display periodically comes back to life for no apparent reason but then fades back to its usual unhelpful state over time or if it is touched, however lightly. Per Apple, I do not have a defective nVidia card. Initally, Apple proposed their $310 fix which I've had twice before (paid by Amex)-- once for a SuperDrive another time for a logic board. Then noticing two slight dings in the case, the Apple genius said that the machine wasn't eligible for the $310 deal, as such machines had to be pristine. This notwithstanding the fact that Apple had previous logged the dings as cosmetic. At that point, the new display went up to $700 and I was told that I'd need a new logic board if I wanted a meaningful warranty. Obviously, I'm not spending $1200 on a three year old laptop. So I decided to do it myself, something the Apple genius conceded made sense.
    I've replaced the data cable with no success. My next step is to replace the inverter cable, although I doubt this will do anything because the brightness controls on my dead LCD seem to work fine. That leaves me with inverter (unlikely) and the actual LCD to replace.
    Do I go ahead with the LCD which runs from $150-250. If it succeeds, I may get several more months out of my Mac. If I don't, I'm looking at a new logic board which I won't buy, leaving me out $300.
    I'd be tempted to suck it up and pay too much for a new Mac but I really need a 15" model with an Expresscard adapter slot -- something that no longer exists. If I buy a new laptop which would be hardship right now, it would likely be a Lenovo W510 (i7 processor, 500gb hard drive, good display for photo editing, etc.) all for $1785. My preference though is to keep this laptop going and put those funds toward a Mac desktop which I also need.
    Any suggestions on the display replacement? Shall I go out and do it? What is the likelihood that I'll do it but won't succeed. Could the fault lie with the motherboard, as well?

    Thanks for the clear-headed analysis. Ordinarily, I would agree with you especially since I never actually sell old electronics. I just give them to friends and family who are behind me on the technology curve. Here's some additional information.
    I've been using the MBP primarily for Photoshop but am finding with CS5 that it is slow. It's my only real computer. I have a Lenovo S10e that runs OSX but that's for fun. I have four external hard drives that use eSATA connectors (I shot 600gb of photos last year alone.) I'm starting to work with video and the MBP stutters on playback. So I've accepted that a MacPro or something like that with a high-end monitor is in my near future. I have to travel next week for an assignment with a working laptop.
    I've priced the current line of MBP's and am looking at $3000 which I'd rather put toward my desktop. I can come up with the money but that will set back the desktop project and leave me with a laptop that isn't cut out for the bulk of my work. The 17" which accepts ExpressCards doesn't come in an i7 configuration and isn't very portable. If I go with a 15" model, I still need to keep my old machine around to transfer files on an as-needed basis to a Firewire hard drive.
    I've seen many posts in these forums about the nVidia issue with users describing symptoms similar to my own. The solutions have included replacing the data cable, inverter cable, inverter, display and (less often and usually at Apple's expense) the motherboard. Assuming that I can live with the consequences that something else will inevitably break, the question I'd like to find an answer to is whether based upon:
    the display occasionally functioning perfectly;
    (ii) the external display working perfectly; and
    (iii) the graphics card passing Apple's diagnostic test
    I can assume that the motherboard is ok - for the moment. (I realize that every time I reopen the case to change wires, disassemble the display, etc. I'm increasing the likelihood that one day the motherboard won't be ok.)
    Any thoughts?

  • Replaced display even WORSE !!!

    *I am so frustrated with Apple and its policy to repair and replace their defective products.*
    Ok, my iMac G5 is almost three years, I bought AppleCare, which is about to expire... that's my main concern as my iMac display started to go bad these last months. Screen became lighter and lighter in the bottom, to the point of:
    In Photoshop, if I select a solid color in a document that is at the top side of my screen, then I drag the same document and select the same color at the bottom side of my screen, Photoshop will identify it as two distinct colors, even being the same document... the same solid color!!! And I work as a graphic and web designer... unacceptable!!!!!!
    *My screen was going really bad...* not just the gradually lighter screen at the bottom, but it started to show ghost images, as those images we used to see in older CRT monitors. I took a couple pictures of those ghost images where the little apple logo was seen on the top left hand side of my screen, and presented it to Apple when I brought my computer.
    *Ok... AppleCare, Apple agreed to replace my LCD ... that should be it! But it wasn't!*
    Yesterday I stopped by at the North Michigan Av store in Chicago to pick up my iMac and I got surprised my iMac display was replaced by one that had more problems than the previous already defective display I brought in!!! This time the display had dark spots on both lower corners of the screen as if the lights were weaker, and there was also a small darker spot on the center of the screen, as if the pixels or the lights underneath it were getting weaker as well.
    I said I wouldn't take it home... no chances, that's my work tool and the reason *I bought AppleCare was exactly to make sure at least for three years I'd be covered for any issue.*
    The Genius guy even told me I wouldn't have to expect things to be 100%, and that there are things that can escape their control... that's ridiculous! *I told him NOTHING can escape Apple's control if I have AppleCare*... the computer has a problem and I expect the problem to be either fixed or have my iMac replaced. Not my fault Apple doesn't produce the iMac 17 inches any more. It really seems that Apple is fixing these iMacs using possibly returned LCDs from old iMacs. Oh! I forgot to say that the LCD was kind of warped and it didn't fit perfectly inside the unit, leaving some gaps on the corners. The Genius guy called it "cosmetic" details and that he wouldn't guarantee that the new LCD would be perfectly fitting inside the iMac but his concern was the brightness.
    I just bought a really CHEAP LCD monitor for my Mac mini ... 150 bucks and the screen brightness is solid and consistent... the same I would expect from an Apple product.
    I told the Genius guy I WOULDN'T accept a display that's brighter at the bottom with the excuse my computer is 3 years old and can't be perfect. That's why Apple sells AppleCare ... and I don't care if it's almost three years! My iMac is still under the warrant for another month!
    *I am really frustrated and mad I don't have my work tool* and I see Apple trying to fix my computer with parts that are even worse than the original defective one.

    NEW iMAC!!!
    I was so frustrated... I went to pick up my iMac and the third screen was even worse than the second... that was worse than the first...
    The Genius guy tried to push me the defective screen again... saying she couldn't see any problem ... that the screen seemed to be fine!
    I didn't want to waste my time again and asked for the store manager... a very polite young guy... he listened to my story and offered to have the screen replaced again... it'd be the fourth screen! plus the SuperDrive issue that wasn't even reported by the person who talked to me on the phone last time... She assured me she had entered this extra information on the repair ticket...
    After (I believe) he saw my sincere frustration on having to work with a screen that isn't close to Apple's standards... *he decided to give me a new machine*!
    I was SO FRUSTRATED! I told him I don't have ANY GAME on my machine! I use it only to create my artwork... *it is my work tool*... and I went with Apple the first time because of the *quality of the products*!
    And with my warrant almost expiring I was afraid I would end up with a bad computer in a couple months!
    Apple didn't lose a machine by doing that but just kept a *happy customer* who will be back in a couple years for a *higher end product* and will talk well about the company!
    Really happy but much more... *FEELING RESPECTED*!

  • Replace display MacBook Pro

    I have a 6 month old  MacBook Pro. I foolishly dropped something on it, while it was closed. Now my display is totally broken. I understand something like this isnt covered under warranty, so I need to get it replaced at the Apple store where I live(Tokyo). My question is how much is it typically to have such a thing replaced?

    Best to ask apple about that. I've heard 400 american or about 30704.0437 but that was with an older model computer so I don't know.
    if you have a high res display with anti glare, that's definitely extra. Best to ask the apple specialist at your store. You have no oblication to fix it there and then.

  • Replacing Display housing for  Early 2008 Macbook pro. older housing ok?

    Hi guys! i have the newest Penryn Early 2008 Macbook pro 2.6 and have had an accident with the aluminum of the display housing. I am currently trying to find a compatible case to replace it with. I cant seem to find spare display housing that are made particularly for the new macbook pros for some reason =(
    I've heard that there are different moulds of the Display housing since there are 3 different manufacturer for the LCD screen? (LG, SAMSUNG,CHIMEI)
    Would the display casings of the older Intel Macbook pro work as long as I match the manufacturer? (e.g. if i have the display casing from a samsung early 2008 macbook pro, would this be compatible with the 2006 or 2007 samsung display housing?)

    There is a service that I have yet to try but it looks pretty reliable and they service macs in virtually every way possible. Go to macservice.com and just follow the steps and choose what you want to repair. For MacBook pro you an get the display housing replaced for about $200, I know that is a bit steep but it's the easiest way to get it repaired. If you do use it let me know how you liked it.

  • NB520, Replaced display, only work with AC power, not work with battery

    I just replaced a broken display on my 7 months old Toshiba NB520 and now it only works with AC power.
    The battery icon shows 52% but not charging.
    When I plug out the AC power, it turns off.

  • Replaced Display and see dots.

    I took my White MacBook to the genius bar because the batter wouldn't charge. I have the one year limited warranty and it's about to expire (unsure if I should buy the warranty bc it's too expensive for me), and While I was there I brought up another issue besides the battery, The Screen.
    I had internal scratches on the screen. At first the technician told me It has to be replaced through shipping it off for a week. But then later on, He said that they can change the display for me at the store without shipping it off.
    I have my macbook, the internal scratches are gone, but now when I look at my computer in an angle, I see a lot of little small dots. It looks like my screen is wet or STICKY.
    It never displayed like this because sometimes I use my mac while I'm standing up and I wouldn't see that, now when I use it standing up and it on the desk, I see those dots.
    I asked the technician about the problem and he got MAD!!! He said that that's how it is, that all parts in macs are different. That we can change the screen 100 times and it will still look like that.
    In general the screen looks good when it's in front of me, but in any angle I see the small white dots, it looks like my screen is wet or gooey or something.
    My display was replaced. Do you think that the display they put is for the new macbook? or what? I think that it might be, unsure though.
    WHAT I HAD MOSTLY IN CONCERN WAS THAT MAYBE THEY DID A CHEESY JOB BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THEY DIDN'T SHIP IT TO REPLACE THE SCREEN.

    I have tried that moment I saw it.
    The problem is internally. I have to be directly in front of the screen in order to see a clear image.
    If I see it in a slight angle to the right or left I see fuzz. Somewhat the same as the type of static you would see with an antenna tv without the new digital tv transceivers. Similar, but white. The static isn't as bad at the tv though.. It looks like the screen is dirty or staticy or goowy Tech said it's normal but it's not

  • Video "snow" replaces displayed image?!

    No, this is not a post about Snow Leopard! What I've found twice, at seemingly random intervals, is that the displayed image on either the internal MacBook Pro display or my external 23" Cinema Display (used with the MBP's lid closed) will be replaced entirely by video "snow." Fortunately, this goes away fairly easily if I move my mouse.
    Has anyone else seen this?

  • Replacing display on HP Pavilion dv4 -2049wm?

    My laptop had an engine blowout and crashed from about 4-1/2 feet trying to fly across the room and cracked the display leaving only about 25% viewable.  I have found the replacement screen online, but I cannot find any instructions on how this is done.  Does anyone have experience with or have knowledge of a link that can show/explain to me how to replace the screen?   Many thanks....

    I have done this many times and it is actually one of the easier laptop repair items on most models. You may also want to have the manual:

    The dv4 is slightly more difficult than most because you have to remove the whole display assembly at the place where the hinges connect to the main body of the laptop in order to get at the screen itself. So the video is not 100% accurate for you. It shows the easier method of just removing the front plastic cover, which applies to most types of laptops but not the dv4, but much of the video is useful.

  • Possible short after replacing display?

    I have 2 T400 units. The HD died on one and the other had a bad display so I took the good display out of one and replaced it in the other. That part was fairly easy thanks to the Lenovo discussion board and you tube, however, when I boot up the 2nd unit now I get the green power lights for about 10 seconds then nothing. The lights go out. I've tried the pushing the power button 10 times and then holding the power button down for 30 secs thing. It brings the lights back again but they go off and the laptop goes dead again after about 10 secs. Any ideas what I might have done and how I can fix this? These units are sadly out of warranty and I'd rather not have to junk them.
    This is an office environment that has BitLocker on the Hard Drives so I could not just replace the HD in the other unit.

    If you have 2 memory chips, try them one at a time. Make sure it is seated correctly. Push it in all the way before snapping it in place and push it a few degrees past horizontal.

  • Replacing display on NB505

    My NB505 accidentally got stepped on, and the display was cracked.  I decided to replace the part myself to save money and ordered the exact same brand, model, and version display. It was a CHI MEI N101LGE-L21 REV.C1 display.  I had no problem removing the broken display and installing the new display.  When I turned the computer on the display worked perfectly. 
    However my wife used the computer and allowed the battery to run out.  After she plugged it back in and turned the computer back on the display was all messed up. The physical display only shows the top left 2/3rds of the picture output. 
    I originally thought this was a graphics driver or some other related problem but when restarting the computer, even the Motherboard POST test and memory check display was like this (BIOS menu is also affected).  Ive also noticed that the some of the colors flicker a little bit but this is a bit harder to describe and im not as concerned about it.  Has anyone with any experience with replacing netbook displays (specifically this model the toshiba NB505 but also more generally with other models) seen this behavior? 
    I have already checked the display connector to be sure it is connected properly and it was.  I am stumped as to what else might be causing this. Any tips or suggestions?

    Connect an external display to your NB505 and go to Control panel-Display-Screen resolution.
    Check the resolution of Internal display panel. It will show you the other value than the default of 1024x600. Display panel is not telling its correct ID to a motherboard as a display cable is not working properly. You may have damaged the display cable when you replaced the panel.
    Check again carefully the connection at the both ends of cable. If it does not work, get another display cable.

  • Replacement Displays for 20" Aluminum iMac

    As I sit here staring at another gray background website that goes from dark gray at the top to light gray at the bottom, I keep wondering "When is Apple going to do the right thing and replace these displays?" The poor quality display is the only thing keeping this computer from being the best one I've ever had.

    If you're still within the 14 day period, return it and get a refund. So long as people keep buying the new 20" iMac, Apple has no incentive to improve the quality of it. I'm concerned about how Apple is going to honor its warranty for people who have the white iMac. If Apple can't repair them, it is contractually bound by its warranty to replace them with a functionally equivalent computer. In the past, that's always meant that a person would end up with a new model that was actually better than its predecessor, but that's not the case now. Since the supply of white iMacs is running out, Apple will eventually be replacing defective white iMacs with aluminum iMacs. However, because of their poor quality screens, especially on the 20" model, the new iMacs are functionally inferior to the white iMacs, thus leaving Apple with no way to honor its warranty unless it replaaces defective white iMacs with new MacPros and Cinema Displays.

    My display needs replacing it has vertical lines when i press the left side of the display and when it is set on some angles.
    There are many replacement 15.2" LCD's around made by Samsung. Is there any particular model to suit specific machines or can I just choose any 15.2" Samsung and fit it myself?

    The people you're planning to buy from recommend strongly against substituting one LCD for another and won't support you if you do. Could the answer be any clearer?
