Replaced hard drive but still problems

I just got my hard drive replaced on my powerbook. However when I run some internet programs there is a loud winding noise, as if it was working very hard and then the display goes black. I press the On button and it turns back on. Does anyone know the problem?

Did you get it replaced from Apple? If so, take it back or send it back.
If you ordered it new from a reputable retailer/reseller, ask for an RMA and get a new one. You have a bad hard drive.
I replaced a failing hard drive in my "Pismo" PowerBook a few years ago due to a whining noise, and the NEW hard drive I got? Made knocking noises and later on, "popped" (the noise). I got a replacement right away.
Anyway, I could be wrong, but the winding noise sounds like a hard drive problem and the screen turning black suggests even more so, but the fact that it turns back on when you press the on button is an anomaly.
See if it sounds like any of these:

  • How to keep music on an external hard drive, but still manage in itunes

Hello, so i just got a new pc. Have downloaded and authorized Itunes and have pointed my file media folder to the external hard drive. What I'd like to do is keep all my music on the external hard drive without saving any music onto my new pc. So is it possible to keep all my music on the external hard drive but still be able to manage the music library in itunes?

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're asking for, but I asked a similar question once before. I hope this helps.
Here is a tutorial from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364?viewlocale=en_US

  • I just got my first mac pro and I can't get the photos out of iPhotos moved on my hp external hard drive, I try export says unable, then I try to drag it from the desktop to the external hard drive but same problem. Thank you so much

I just got my first mac pro and I can't get the photos out of iPhotos and move them on my hp external hard drive, I try export says unable, then I try to drag it from the desktop to the external hard drive but same problem. what to do? Thank you so much

How is your external drive formatted? Use Disk Utility to check the volume format. If it is NTFS, you will need to reformat the HDD as exFAT in order to retain universal compatibility (RW to it on both Mac and Windows).

  • How do I keep my media on an external hard drive but still access it in iTunes?

I just recently purchased a new Macbook Air and I had my itunes media library on an external hard drive. How do I access my itunes media on the macbook air from the external hard drive without transferring all the media onto my macbook air? I also want to be able to add and download media to my itunes and have it saved on my external hard drive. I have been trying to figure this out for weeks and need some assistance. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hey, basically i had the same problem as you. i had all of my itunes on an external hard drive and just bought a macbook pro, so here is what i was told to do....plug in the external hard drive to your MBA and then when you open itunes hold down the option button while you click and hold it down till you see a pop up window, it will ask you what library you want to use, click choose library and choose the itunes file that is on your external hard drive. and then all of your stuff will be in the itunes.
what i have seemed to run into though is, when the external hard drive isn't plugged in itunes won't open unless you choose another library or plug in the external hard drive. - my question is this, should i open another library on my macbook pro's internal hard drive so i can at least look at itunes when i don't have my external hard drive connected. my old macbook did this, it would point to another library on my macbook and i would still be able to see all of my media but couldn't play it without the external hooked up, is there a way to do this on lion?
i hope i was able to answer your question sam and hopefully can have my question answered too.
    thanks!
    - sorry sam, don't mean to hijack your thread but hopefully it will help us both - i don't want to store any media )movies, music, podcasts, apps, any of that stuff on my macbook pro's hard drive, so say there is a way to get itunes to open without my external hooked up and i can still see my media, or not see my media and i want to download a song or a app that i see when i am not near my external....what is the easiest way to get that file onto the external and not have it taking up space on my macbook pro's hard drive? sorry for all the long questions

  • Replaced Hard Drive now another problem.

Today my friend replaced the hard drive on his iBook G4 933mhz as he feared it was dead after the machine wouldnt recognise it - very much like my G3 did a year ago - whilst doing so when he was taking the power button lead up from the logic board - due to the way it was deisgned it looks as if the whole thing has been taken up from the logic board, even after that he couldnt just remove the top connecting bit, he put it back in place but when he closed the machine up after replacing the drive it doesnt switch on.
Is ther any way of soldering this back onto the logic board? or is it now even more buggered than it was before?
    Thanks

    Scampdoodle,
There's a life lesson learned here,
Don't let friends work on your iBook unless they are certified. Bring it to your local Apple Store/Reseller or someplace like PowerBookRes.
No, I don't think you can solder it back on without causing more damage. Most documentation warns to be extremely careful when removing the top case because of the speaker and power wires. Those wires are fragile and can easily rupture, which causes problems (one of the reasons why certified technicians should do these things). You may be able to buy a wire from a place like eBay.
    Good Luck,
    Jon

  • Replaced hard drive, but can't access Time Machine backups of old drive

My internal hard drive was failing so I replaced it. I told the people that replaced it that I could install the System myself and that I had backups of my data.
So, I got the machine home, booted up from the Snow Leopard Install DVD and selected Restore from Time Machine. I chose the last backup which was Mountain Lion 10.8.2. It crashed after several minutes.
So, I restarted. But I had my finger on the Control key rather than the Option key, so it booted to on-line recovery mode. When it asked me if I wanted to restore Lion I decided, "Sure. Why not? Since the restore from Time Machine doesn't work." That took about six hours.
Then I went to the App store and downloaded Mountain Lion. Another six hours and that is done.
Now I can't access the backups on Time Machine. They appear to be there. It shows backups to Feb 2011, which is when I installed Time Machine on an external drive. But I can only access databacked up from my new drive and Admin account.
Last night Browse Other Drives for Time Machine at least showed the old backups. After shutting down overnight only the new backups show.
I've run verify and repair on the external and it's okay.
Please tell me I can get that data back. There's over a decade of stuff there going back two other Macs. Photos, important documents, all my writing are there. I really need it back and I can't understand why I can't get back.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi all... I had a very similar issue.  I had a hard drive replaced by Apple on my iMac due to a total hard drive failure.  I attempted to restore my last time machine back up through my time capsule but I get some type of sparse bundle package error.  It appears that something is coming back from the back up as I only have about 180GB remaining space out of 1TB.  Any advice?  It appears that Apple had re-installed the latest version of Lion back to my hard drive.  I'm completely distraught here as like Romantic Heretic, I have over a decade of information currently lost.
Any help with step by step directions would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks

  • I need to transfer all photos to an external hard drive. Many photos have been moved around or deleted from computer hard drive, but still have a very full hard disk. Are the photos with questionmarks in Lightroom still taking up hard disk space? I'm so l

    Hi folks,
My hard disk is full. I already moved lots of photos from other folders on the hard disk to other external hard drives, so there are a lot of question marks in Lightroom. So, are those photos still taking up room on the computer hard disk? I want to move everything I have in Lightroom off of the computer to another external hard drive, in hopes that will free up space. I watched a tutorial, and read some things about it, but I need simple instructions please.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Just erase my internal Hard Drive but still have files on it? help & thanks

    Hello all,
i want to erase all the data on my internal Maxtor 250gb Serial ATA Hard Drive securely, so i format the Drive by using Apple Disk Utility but still found remaining files on it, i already use the "35-pass Erase" option to erase the Drive successfully, but the info from the Apple Disk Utility still says:
    Number of Folders : 4
    Capacity : 232.8 GB
    Available : 232.7 GB
    Used : 73.6 MB
    Number of Files : 8
so it that normal ??? or what is the "hidden" folder & "Used" files stand for???thanks a lot!!!
    My Computer : Apple G5 10.4.11

    Hi-
I don't know about the iPhone or iTouch, but the statement is wrong regarding hard drives.
As for the other devices, they use flash memory, which like hard drives, may be erased and rewritten with zeros for security.
I would say that the rumor is just that, and to disregard it.

  • Song deleted from hard drive but still on itunes?

I recently deleted a folder full of duplicate songs that were intended to be backups so I could save space. Now, itunes still lists those files but it puts little exclamation points next to the song to tell me the original file can't be found.
    Here is the exact message:
"The song 'x' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
No! I don't want it found! But how do I remove the ghost file from itunes so I don't have all those duplicates??

If you want to get rid of tracks with exclamation marks, you can do it by a crafty use of playlists:
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

  • Replaced hard drive but won't boot

My start up drive was nearly full so I put in a larger second drive. Tried to copy all the files over but some would not copy. What does it take to copy all the needed files to the new drive so I can make it my new start up drive and remove the smaller one?

I would clone my old HD to the new HD with either of the these apps:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7032/carbon-copy-cloner
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13803/superduper%21
Then, go to System Preferences>Startup Disk, and choose the new drive as the startup drive. Make sure your old drive has enough free space on it to operate safely before attempting your cloning. Also, first, boot off your Tiger disc and run Disk Utility on your old drive to make sure it's okay.

  • IPod 4th Gen Click Wheel replaced hard drive; problems

Ok, So I replaced the 20gb hard drive with a new EXACT replacement hard drive, no other problems with iPod. But iTunes will not recognize it because the hard drive is not formatted. I tried formating it with Disk Utility but keep getting error messages. Im not sure what format to use. When the 4th gen came out Intel processors werent here so Im sure I need to simply format as Mac OS Extended. There is no HFS= format in Disk Utility. Im lost as to what to do. Please help??!

    hmm - curiouser and curiouser
I've now managed to get it to manually update (after iTunes took 100% of system resources and I had to force quit it...) but that still doesn't really help me with the auto-sync feature which still won't work

  • New hard drive but bookmarks still there

Is it even remotely possible that a "new hard drive" with Mavericks freshly installed could have my old bookmarks on it?? Are they stored with our Apple ID or something? Because I'm on my 3rd replacement drive within a couple of months from this Apple Certified dealer/repair shop, and I just got my computer back yesterday and they said they replaced hard drive, and installed Mavericks, but my Safari bookmarks from my original replacement hard drive were still there! There was no other trace that I could see from the old drive though.
I'm going crazy because I keep bring my computer to this place and they keep "replacing" the hard drive and I can't WORK. It always ends up completely freezing after bringing it home and using it for less than a day. I spoke to them yesterday and they said when they ran the diagnostics on my machine, everything else checked out ok. But is it possible that some other component is destroying my hard drive, or that maybe its not the hard drive at all? Even though their diagnostics say everything is in check? Or do they keep giving me the same hard drive (I never wrote down the serial number of it unfortunately, so I can't check) after they "fix it" or something? I'm going crazy.

What build model (identifier) MacBook do you have?
Since this series was manufactured, upgraded, and continued as the main
    MacBook model (not MB/Pro, not MB/Air) from 2006 through 2010, you'd
have to specify so replies to technical questions have a specific basis to it.
If not a MacBook basic series, then it may be a MacBook Pro, etc.
    •How to identify MacBook models
•How to identify MacBook Pro models
•How to identify your MacBook Air
You may have to consider getting a hard disk drive from a reputable third
party source and if the MacBook is one that isn't too difficult for the user
to upgrade or replace a hard disk drive, use instructions to do so yourself.
An example of such a HDD & upgrade source, with video & other instructions
is OWC or macsales.com, where you match up parts using the Model identifier
or look through their page and read what they say about identifying your MB,
which is helpful if you choose to also upgrade the RAM chips correctly.
A general reference of what a mac-centric reputable vender can offer includes:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/powerbook-ibook-macbook/
If you had access to an official retail Apple Store with Genius bar, they'd likely
be able to perform a diagnostic test to see what the problem(s) are with your
MacBook. Then their staff specialist could suggest a course of action, even
if the computer is out of warranty (likely is) they usually do this for free. Where
an authorized reseller may not be set up to do this, without a service fee.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
There may be other Apple Authorized Service Providers not too far from you.
Or there may be a retail Apple Store with Genius bar within half a day away.
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
The device should have a complete and thorough diagnostic by those who
seek to resolve the issue and not just throw a limited array of parts at it.
For your own security and complete backups of your system & software, you
could get an externally enclosed self-powered hard disk drive that can support
a bootable full system clone (use carboncopycloner or superduper utility) then
you could restore your computer from that, in addition to a separate device for
use with Time Machine, and so on. Be your own first line of tech support. I am.
You could use Disk Utility to see the serial numbers and other HDD info; also
if you can access the system profiler (different name in Mav 10.9 than old OSX)
that too will tell you a cross-section of hardware items and software in the Mac.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Replaced hard drive: Toshiba Satellite L505 -still getting error message

Replaced the hard drive but still getting this message:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
No boot able device --insert boot disk and press any key
Anybody have any suggestions as to why I'm still getting this. I don't have a boot disk - none came with my laptop.

    The model is Satellite L505D-GS600
However I think I figured out the problem (one of those DUH moments).
For the initial error, I had problems with my hard drive. I was told it was mechanical and but the hard drive was not corrupt. I was hoping to recover my files. In any event, I did purchase another hard drive and realized after posting the question that I needed the recovery disk in order for it to work. I don't have this disk so I've got to order one. However, if I'm wrong please let me know. Also, I have not made any changes other than the new hard drive. Thank you for your reply.

  • How to keep music on external hard drive, but play on iMac?

So, I have nearly 500GB of music on an external hard drive. I don't want to move them into my iMac, because it'd obviously eat up all my free space. My question is, how can I keep them on the external hard drive, but still access and play them while I'm on my Mac?
How would I do so using itunes? Would it be simpler to use a different program? If so, which one? Cost?
Could some please tell me how to do this step-by-step? I am at a loss for how to do this! Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.
(Also, on a slightly unrelated topic, does anyone know a good software to create album cover? I like to make them for mix cds I make. Name cost, preferably something cheap).
    Thanks again!

How would I do so using itunes?
Open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences and set it not to copy content to the iTunes Music folder when it's added to the library. Alternatively, drag them onto the QuickTime Player in the Dock.

  • How do I move all my movies onto an external hard drive and still run imovie

My Mac hard drive is full due to 300GB's of movies. I don't want to lose the movies and still want to work on them/create projects etc.
I've bought an external hard drive so have copied and pasted all the movies across from MAC hard drive to external hard drive.
I want to delete the movies off the MAC hard drive but still ensure Imovie picks up the movies from the external hard drive (continuously plugged in).
Can anyone let me know how I can do this?
    Thanks

    Hi
In regard to some versions of iMovie - and to ALL Video workings on a Mac
All - iMovie - all versions, FinalCut, Adobe Premiere etc etc
External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - Else broken files and all kinds of trouble
and rather a FireWire or Thunderbolt connected ext. drive - as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up, and when I use HD-Material (for SD-Video quality it may work better - but to a severe quality loss)
    iMovie'08 and '09 and '11 ( Don't have iMovie'13 version 10.0.x)
DO not move or alter ANY video material - On DeskTop/Finder and in any folders named anything like
    iMovie Event's - or -
    iMovie Project's
If moved to e.g. another hard disk - the link back to iMovie app is broken - and this can be anything from HARD to IMPOSSIBLY to mend !
    BUT instead.
Connect new (hfs-formatted) ext hard disk
    Start iMovie
Move Event's and Project's - within the application
and now links to material is preserved - and space gained on the Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard Disk
