Replaced hard drive, need to re-link Time Machine
Please, before you start typing any response, read my entire post.
I recently upgraded my internal HDD. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to the new one, and when I booted up my computer after physically installing it, it worked fine. However, when I plugged in my Time Machine backup, it started to prepare to backup the entire drive, as if I had never backed up before.
I stopped the back up in progress, and started to look for a way to re-link my Time Machine backup drive.
After pouring through post after post, I decided I do NOT want to open Terminal and go through a thousand meticulous steps to change my drive's UUID, or rather change the UUID that Time Machine looks for.
I would rather reboot, wipe my new drive again, and restore from my Time Machine backup, as it seems to be the easiest way to re-link without getting a headache.
However, do I need to delete the backup that I stopped, before doing anything else? I'm going to assume so? Otherwise I'm afraid Time Machine will try to complete it, and start backing up the entire contents of the drive all over again--my original problem that I'm trying to avoid.

That won't help, either. It doesn't matter how you get the data onto the drive, it's a new drive, with a new UUID (and it will get another new one if you do the restore). Time Machine will do a new, full backup of it. You cannot prevent that.
How large is your Time Machine drive, compared to the size of the data it's backing-up?
Time Machine will start deleting old backups, trying to make room for the new one. If the TM drive is less than about 2.2 times the size of the data, the backup will fail for lack of space after deleting all but the most recent backup.
If it's much larger, then fewer old backups will have to be deleted. Unfortunately, it's impossible to predict how much space each will gain.
So, if your drive is well over 2.2 times the size, just let it do the full backup.
If not, either erase the drive and let it start fresh, or start over on a different (probably larger) drive.

My internal hard drive was failing so I replaced it. I told the people that replaced it that I could install the System myself and that I had backups of my data.
So, I got the machine home, booted up from the Snow Leopard Install DVD and selected Restore from Time Machine. I chose the last backup which was Mountain Lion 10.8.2. It crashed after several minutes.
So, I restarted. But I had my finger on the Control key rather than the Option key, so it booted to on-line recovery mode. When it asked me if I wanted to restore Lion I decided, "Sure. Why not? Since the restore from Time Machine doesn't work." That took about six hours.
Then I went to the App store and downloaded Mountain Lion. Another six hours and that is done.
Now I can't access the backups on Time Machine. They appear to be there. It shows backups to Feb 2011, which is when I installed Time Machine on an external drive. But I can only access databacked up from my new drive and Admin account.
Last night Browse Other Drives for Time Machine at least showed the old backups. After shutting down overnight only the new backups show.
I've run verify and repair on the external and it's okay.
Please tell me I can get that data back. There's over a decade of stuff there going back two other Macs. Photos, important documents, all my writing are there. I really need it back and I can't understand why I can't get back.

I attempted to restore my last time machine back up through my time capsule but I get some type of sparse bundle package error. It appears that something is coming back from the back up as I only have about 180GB remaining space out of 1TB. Any advice? It appears that Apple had re-installed the latest version of Lion back to my hard drive. I'm completely distraught here as like Romantic Heretic, I have over a decade of information currently lost.
Any help with step by step directions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I just replaced my hard drive and restored everything from Time machine. However, my itunes is empty. No music, movies etc are there. Please help thanks
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Windows images, but you get the point. Depending on the age of your library the library file might not include the .itl extention. Make it match the file you are replacing.

I am trying to get space on an external hard drive which has some old time machine back up files that I do not need but can not eliminate, even by going into the time machine, clicking on the backup file to be eliminated and using the drop down menu with the gear box symbol to eliminate
I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots. -

Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty. -

ShakTwas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
(1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
If that doesn't work
(2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture. How can I access the Aperture Library on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup? I can only access the application but not the library..
Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it. -
Can I switch external hard drives and still access old Time Machine backups?
I have a Mac Book Pro linked to 2 1TB external hard drives, one used as my Time Machine Back up, the other used as a manual ad hoc back up and to store even older files.
The TM back up drive is now full. If I just unplug it/switch it off and plug in and set up a new 2TB hard drive as my TM back up, will I still be able to access the back ups on the original TM drive if necessary, through TM?
Wil it be a start over situation with the new drive, performing a complete back up to begin with?
Or would you advise me to transfer the old back folder to the new drive, given that it will be larger?Hi den.thed,
Thank you for this - I think the easy option by far appears to be to leave existing backups on disk 1, and plug in disk 2 and start over. -
LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not Being Seen By Time Machine

I have a LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not being seen by Time Machine hooked up to my iMac via firewire 800. My iMac is running latest updates etc. Have raised a support ticket and was given the following instructions by LaCie:

Thank you for contacting LaCie Technical Support. Make sure the drive is mounting and you can assess files on it on your 10.5 system. If you can then you will need to reformat the drive to make it compatible with time machine.
Warning! All data on the external drive will be destroyed in this process.
Step 1: Run Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Step 2: Click on the LaCie hard drive's 'physical' entry, usually the third entry in the list
Step 3: Click on the Partition tab
Step 4: Change 'Current Scheme' to '1 Partition'
Step 5: Change the name of the drive back to what you would like it to be
Step 6: The format needs to be Mac OS Extended, with or without journaling
Step 7: Click on the Options... button
Use "Apple Partition Map" partition scheme on a PowerPC-based Mac.
Use "GUID" partition scheme on an Intel-based Mac.
Step 8: Click on OK
Step 9: Click on Apply
Step 10: click on Erase at the bottom of the screen, then confirm the erase.
The drive should start to be reformatted which should take only a few seconds and show up on the desktop with a new icon. Once it has you can then use it with time machine.
I have done all of the above and it is still not being seen. Anyone had a similar issue or got the above to actually work?

Check drive volume name and also the Computer name. Apple released a tech note recommending that both be limited to only the characters A-Za-z0-9 (no dashes, hyphens, or other special characters.
If you can, send the Apple System Profiler report to me at the addres in my profile. Imay be able to see something there. I have helped another user with similar problems, but with a LaCie USB drive. He got things working by repeating the recommended steps, and double checking everything.
As others have rported, this should work, so there may be something else preventing proper operation.
If the drive is usable from Finder, but Time Machine cannot use it, there is something related in how Time Machine is viewing the drive.

I want to add a second external hard drive and load my Aperture Photo Library on to it so that the library can be shared by both me and my wife. Is there a way to automatically backup the photo library that will be on the second hard drive to the Time Machine hard drive?

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

I am having sporadic issues after new hard drive install and recovery using Time Machine. The same sluggish response, start up screen pixelating...If I reinstall Lion will it wipe out other applications? My HD was formatted and partitioned correctly, I have a late 2009 iMac.
Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps. -

can you unplug the external hard drive you are using for time machine and then plug it back in and it work normals because i have a mac book and don't want to always be carrieing the external hard drive every where i go so can you ?
Yes, that will work fine. It will back up normally once you plug it in again. I do this with my MacBook.

Look in the Utility folder which is located inside the Applications folder.
You don't want to do anything with the disk on a PC if you want it to work on the Mac. They both use different formats.
