Replaced hard drive - now can not install an OS - any ideas?

That's right. The iMac was given to me and the "giver" did not give me any CDs etc. (very old iMac).
Anyway, the hard drive was bad, so I replaced it along with 512 of RAM.
I am unable to install any OS because all my OS X versions are upgrades. I just want to see if the thing will work worth anything with OS X before I keep it.
I bet I'm stuck aren't I?
D.

If UR looking for original Cd's - check out your local "quokka' mag - you know, the one that has all the for sale items - furniture, whitegoods, computers etc - here in Perth Australia we have teh 'Quokka'. Anyway, try all the 'imacs for sale' contacts until you find either someone who has original CD's for sale - this could be someone who gets bulk intakes of 2nd hand computers - PC and/or Mac - often they get shipmetns of @nd hand computers form schools and the original software Cd's as well- you could pick up a bargain?!
What colour is your iMac?? Apple has a chart to distinguish it's computer series on its info base - I think (hang on and I'll go find it for U) ...... ah, here it is - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58669 - will help a little bit in differentiating between models.
Look, Mr Singitloud-in-the-shower, these G3 iMacs are great little beasts - I just love them - even at 55 - and today I've pulled my first one apart - but it's a scrap piece with the CDRW and HD already scavenged - but it's my learn-on machine - now I just need to find where on the web you can find reliable fix-it info so I can learn more repair ideas.

  • Replaced hard drive, now can't boot from install disc to restore backup

Yesterday, my hard drive died (disk warrior informed me, that HD had irrecoverable errors, and my iMac would shut down unless it was booted from the Disk Warriorr disc).
Today, I have a new internal HD professionally installed. And when I brought it home, and installed Snow I got an error at the end of the installation "OS could not be installed, restart or choose start up disk" or something to that effect. However, on licking OK I got the snow music, and welcome movie nd eerything seemed to be working fine.
I can log in normally and have get to my desktop, but on trying to boot from the Snow Leopard disk (10.6), I get to the gray screen with the apple logo and hang. I have tried resetting Pram/firmware and also ran the fdisk command (twice).
It seems too much of a concidence that my hard drive and now my disc drive would die all in span of two days? I can hear the disc noise, but as I mentioned I cant get beyond the gray screen on trying to boot from the disc.
    Suggestions?
Late Nov '07 intel iMac. And I did update the OS to 10.6.4. Install disc is 10.4.

Return it to the repair station.

  • Installed New Hard Drive, Now Can't Install Snow Leopard

    Hi All,
Had to install a new hard drive in my system (15" MacBook Pro Early 2010 Model), so I followed the instructions to put in the drive and that worked just fine.  Now I need to reinstall Snow Leopard, which isn't working.  Here's what I've tried...
    1) Boot from the install disc by holding down the "C" key when powering on the system.  I hear the drive spin for a little bit, but then it stops spinning and nothing else happens...I just get the Apple logo.
    2) Made a bootable USB drive using directions found online.  Plugged that bad boy in, held the "Option" key down, and powered on.  Got the option to choose the drive as my boot drive.  Selected that, and nothing happens.  Just get the Apple logo again.
Any thoughts on what I need to do next?  Never experienced such a thing.
    Appreciate the help.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • Moved My Hard Drive Now Can Not Find iTunes Library

This is my first post, so I am hoping that I can find an answer to my question.
I recently purchased via eBay a Airport Extreme as I wanted to have my hard drive away from my MacBook.  Perviously the Hard Drive was connected with a USB and on that Hard Drive was all my Itunes Music, and it worked 100%.  Now that I have the Apple Airport Extreme, which is up and working I can not longer assess my iTunes.
I can see it when I look at the finder, and I have changed it to look at it in the peferance menu on the iTunes, but I think I have not done everything.  I have read about all the things that you can do, but they are all taking about "moving" or "backing up" the iTunes library, I have it in the right spot I can not piont the iTunes to it.
Can you please give me any advice. Please find below a screen shot of my Hard Drive, maybe I am not putting the right file up, the one that I have been picking is the one highlighted, iTunes.
    Thanks in Advance.

  • Erased Hard Drive, Now Can't Install OS

    Hi all,
I'm selling my Powerbook G4 15", and was asked to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system.
I put the PB into firewire disk mode, opened Disk Utility in my new computer, and erased the disk.
I then put my OS 10.3 Install disk into the PB, but was unable to start up. Instead of getting to the install menu, I get the white screen and gray apple; the apple logo then "shifts" a few pixels to the right and down, and the computer hangs there without doing anything.
I put the PB back into firewire disk mode, popped the install disk into my other computer, and tried to install that way. The install menu then told me that I couldn't install onto the targeted PB drive, since "An earlier version of OS X is not installed."
One more caveat: I am missing the original system restore disk for the PB. I have the second disk, but haven't been able to find the first. I figured since I had all the os 10.3 disks it wouldn't matter.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure that the computer either came with 10.3 installed. It's only about two years old.
Other things I've tried, with little success, are using the startup volume choice mode to try and select the os 10.3 disk to start off of (it doesn't show any volumes to choose) and resetting the PRAM (still get the flashing question mark folder on start up without the system cd in and the dislocated apple logo with the cd in).

  • What is the maximum hard drive size can I install into my MacBook Pro 15 "late 2008 ?

Hello community, I play with the thought in my MacBook Pro 15 "late 2008 equipped with an SSD hard drive. What is the maximum hard drive size can I install? Thank you in advance

I don't recommend you to install a hard drive bigger than 2 TB if you are going to install Windows in Boot Camp or you may have problems
The largest 2.5" SATA HDDs of 9.5 mm thickness that I am aware of are 1 TB in capacity.  There is a 12.5 mm thick  HDD that will fit some MBPs.  But I have not seen any of larger capacity.
Are there now 2 TB HDDs available for MBPs?    If so, I am interested.
    Ciao.
Both OWC and Crucial have SSDs of about 1 TB capacity.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

  • Why my Toshiba mobile hard drive (1TB) can not be used in the macbook air?

Why my Toshiba mobile hard drive (1TB) can not be used in the macbook air?

If you are speaking of the USB 3.0 Canvio, you are not alone. Call Toshiba and check on their progress in alleviating the problem. I heard they are blaming Apple, but since theirs is the only drive that exhibits this problem, I think the burden is on Toshiba.
Some users have reported that by using a micro USB 2.0 connector (see bottom picture), instead of the 3.0 that comes with the drive, that it is a workaround. Notice that the 3.0 connector has sort of a "dual head" nature to the construction. One part of it is 2.0 USB micro compatible. I've never tried it myself though.

  • I bought and downloaded a movie to my macair and it showed in my library yesterday. Today however i can not find it. Any idea why that would be? I did buy it and not rent FYI

I bought and downloaded a movie to my macair and it showed in my library yesterday. Today however i can not find it. Any idea why that would be? I did buy it and not rent FYI

    OK, I think I understand what's happening.
Movies are now stored in iCloud: see http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-itunes/2012/03/movies-now-available-on-icloud .html
So they may take a while to download to your Mac.  Movies are big, after all.
I believe you can guarantee the movie stays on your Mac by going to Preferences (in the iTunes menu at the top), and going to the "Advanced" tab, and checking "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library".
    Hope that helps!

  • Pavilion g6-1096sa - Replacement Hard Drive - Windows 7 Fresh Install - Sata Issue

A friend dropped her HP Pavilion g6-1096sa Notebook PC and the hard drive has failed (or at least I think it has).
Of course, this was before burning the restore CD's.
Before I get her to purchase a new hard drive, I wanted to install a vanilla copy of Windows 7 on a spare drive that I have (to prove 100% that the drive is faulty) but it's failing with :-
" This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk, ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in computer's bios menu ".  The installer sees the drive, but won't install onto it.
It's an old 80 GB SATA II drive that I had lying around at work, which should work fine.
I've checked the bios and I can't see any options for the hard disk.  I'm guessing that the bios is pretty basic, and you can't just boot into the sata controller to enable AHCI support or similar.  I would have thought that AHCI support is already enabled or the original drive wouldn't have booted.
Does this model need a specific sata driver.  I've checked through the driver downloads, and cannot find one for Windows 7 (found the XP version though).
Do I need a driver, or do I need to do something in the BIOS?
PS: If I put the original disk back in, I can start to load Windows 7 on it from a bootable download from Microsoft's website, but crashes at random intervals.  (I think the clicking noise is giving it away though).

No one have any information on the BIOS or SATA for this model :-(

  • Replaced hard drive now what help

I =have the crt imac snow edition, I replaced hard drive all I get is a blue globe on start up, I have the software restore disc have placed it in nothing happens tried the holding down c key to start from the cd, Nothinh happens I have read numerous threads hoping to find the answer.

First of all, are you sure the CD you inserted is truely bootable and designed for your iMac (and not specific to another different Mac)?
Anyways to reset PRAM, while turning on your iMac, hold down Option + Cmd + P + R (I know, hard to do that 4 key combo).. and you should hear some "boing" sound, wait until you hear two "boings" then you can release and try to hold down 'C' again to boot your CD... I think that's how that works... someone can correct me or clarify if I'm not 100% correct....

My itunes is not showing my ipad as a device anymore, i uninstalled itunes and reloaded, the ipad showed up for awhile, as updates were happening, it then said the ipad was restarting and now it is not showing up again, any ideas?? I was trying to sync my calendar and contacts which worked perfectly last time. Now when I plug in the ipad it brings up adobe photoshop album start - photo downloader and looks like it is trying download photos as if it is only seeing the ipad as a camera. very frustrating!

Windows ONLY sees iPads and iPhones as a camera.  This is nothing new or different.
When you open iTunes and connect the device, does iTunes detect the device?
Have you tried a different USB port? Restarting the computer? Restarting the device?
Frankly, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes is a bit of a drastic step as it was likely unnecessary.
