Replaced iMac G5 hard drive - now nothing works except the fan :(

I have an iMac G5 ALS with the original 160 gb internal drive. I researched and printed the apple instructions for replacing the hard drive, copied all of my important files onto an external and then sat down to replace the drive. I followed the instructions step by step, doing well except that the temperature cable connector broke. So I did more research and many posts said that it didn't need to be connected to operate. I closed everything back up and hit the power button. All I got was the power light and fan noises, followed by increased fan speed after a minute or less. I could hear the hard drive spin briefly soon after I hit the power button.
Startup from the install disc you all will tell me. Well, I would if the disc drive would inject the disc.
So, now I've spent my whole afternoon trying different scenarios to troubleshoot. I've gotten nowhere. I tried reattaching the temperature cable wire by wire, no luck (of course there are four of them and they are loose, so which goes where I don't really know. I tried keeping them in the same order in which they leave the other connector). Nothing.
Okay, so if I put the original hard drive back in it must work until I get this figured out...nope. Now that I have the original hard drive replaced into the iMac I get the power light and fan noises, no sound, no screen. Same as with the unformatted new drive.
I was careful to connect everything back and I am really surprised in myself that I cannot make it work. The only thing that is truly different is the temperature cable, and I've read enough that says it should still start up.
Please help me if you have any ideas.
Jonathan

Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Did you try resetting the SMU? Have you tried resetting the NVRAM?

My MBA suddenly shut off and after charging, nothing works except the keyboard lights.   I charged it and it's been hours and no sound, fan, or power chime happens.  It also says it's fully charged.

same or similar have to keep trying to reboot- only happens after charging overnight.

  • Files moved to external hard drive - now nothing playing in iTunes...help!

    *Hi guys,*
*Just wondering if someone can give me some advice really. I think / know I've made a bit of a botch up of my files :-(*
*Here's the story - I'll try to be brief...I have done a number of different things to try and sort this mess out and this is the latest...*
*- Laptop storage full, with over 5000 music files saved on it. Laptop unhappy - says needs more space. I try to accommodate.*
*- Already have all music files backed up on external storage drive. Nice. Delete music files in C:/Program Files/iTunes file. Laptop happy - has enough space.*
*- Delete current iTunes music files. Drag and drop music files from external hard drive into iTunes window. Transfers music. No problem.*
*- Add new files to external hard drive - try to update in iTunes. iTunes not happy - shows exclamation marks by most songs, which then won't play.*
*- iTunes only opened with external hard drive connected and working.*
    *- Me now not happy.*
*- Try changing path where library is saved. Does nothing useful.*
*- Only available option is to click on each track and manually locate it. Not fun when there are 600+ files.*
*- Decide to drag and drop files into iTunes window again.*
*- Now ended up with 12000 tracks in my iTunes, half of which are duplicates with exclamation marks that won't play.*
*- Now at end of my tether. Takes hours to move tracks and now using up unecessary room with unplayable tracks.*
*Does anyone know a. where I went wrong (given I've faffed around with it so much...I just want it organised once and for all...) and more importantly, b. what I can do to sort this mess out.*
*Is it actually possible to have all your music stored externally but to have them play through iTunes to transfer onto my iPod???*
*Also, if I used my iPod as a disk drive, and copied the files straight onto there from my hard drive, would they actually play, thus ruling out iTunes altogether?*
    *Many thanks in advance.*
    *Frustrated MP3 wrangler*

*Also...is there any way I can filter out all the tracks with the ! so I can delete the unplaying copies as they're taking up room in my iTunes? I know how to find duplicates, but then I have to go and delete each one individually...*
    *Thank you!*

  • We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  My hard drive died and we have a new hard drive now, but all that the fixit shop put on it was the Snow Leopard OS;  can I ask Apple for a download of our other many software programs to reload them?  Does it cost to do

We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  The hard drive died and we had a new hard drive installed.  They only installed the Snow Leopard OS on it, and there were many software programs that came with the iMac originally.. now missing.  Does anyone know whether Apple will resupply these?  I do have an Apple installation disc but have upgraded from the original Leopard to Snow Leopard... so the OS is not quite the same.  Ideas?  Thanks!

No bootable bakup/clone or Time Machine backup? No initial install discs? If no to both of those, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and request replacement discs for that machine. They're available for a nominal S&H charge.

  • Raid array removed, hard drives now wont work?? help

    Hi all,
I had a KT266 pro2RU motherobard with 2 ibm 40gig hard drives that were in raid mode 0,
I took the 2 drives out of the computer and wanted to use one of them in another computer on a standard drive controller (single drive not raid) and i cant seem to access the disk to format it or install windows xp on it?, it keeps saying write access denied?,
I am thinking that i should have unmounted? the raid array before taking the drives out to put them back to normal but dont have the raid system any more, is there any way i can make these 2 40 gig drives work now?, or has it overwritten the HD bios or something?
If anyone can help i'd appreciate it
    Cheers

i would try fdisk on it or partition magic if you have that

  • Moved library to new hard drive, now nothing shows in iTunes

I moved my library to a new internal hard drive, but the music does not show when I start up iTunes. I followed the instructions from the Apple website, so I don't know what to do. I can see the files on the new hard drive, so I know they are still around. I'm afraid to sync as I may lose everything. What do I do?
    VAIO PCV-RZ24G   Windows XP

First - re-read all the instructions and figure out where you might have dropped a step. Below are three similar sites that explain the same process. One may help you diagnose what went wrong.
My guess is that you moved or corrupted your Library database file in the process. But without more information, I am just taking a shot in the dark.
See these links for some step-by-step info:

  • Swapped hard drives, now nothing shows up in iTunes

I recently upgraded my computer from an 80GB drive to a 250GB drive. I connected the 250GB drive and turned the 80GB into a USB backup for my music and movies. The 80GB drive is where my music used to live. It was the D: drive, and when I connected the new 250GB drive, I name it D: and changed the 80GB to E. I then copied all of my music and movies to the new, 250GB D: drive. When I launched iTunes, nothing was there. I tried importing my music, but the podcasts, movies, TV Shows, etc are all still gone.
How can I get back to where I was before I swapped drives?

  • IMac Leopard Hard Drive--who knows what's the problem

Alright, this all started last night. I downloaded some P2P programs and was downloading a few large files. I should have thought something was wrong when I got a message saying my start-up disk was too full and I needed to delete files. I figured I let it go overnight and see what happens. So I deleted some media files I've been meaning to.
This morning it had obviously restarted and was at the log in menu (though it shouldn't have). So I tried to log in. Then it kept going to white screen with grey apple and rolling thought thing underneath. It'd sit like that for awhile then reboot and get back to the white screen.
So I've been looking up other discussions and have tried the following.
--Hardware troubleshoot--restarted with power button, as it was coming on held down the D key--didn't do anything
--Disk Utility--inserted Leopard DVD, restarted held down the option button, Disk Utility. At first I couldn't unmount it. So I plugged in my old external HD and installed Leopard on it. Then through that external Leopard account accessed my IMac's HD. I couldn't get to the applications for some reason but was able to delete some if not most of the newly downloaded files I could find. Some I couldn't because of an error (-36) saying I couldn't read/write.
When I did Disk Utility on IMac from there I got error saying invalid ...count. Verify or Repair failed. I tried just Verify and it failed so apparently it didn't make it to repair.
So then I tried AppleJack program--downloaded and installed, then tried restarting. I'm not really positive I did the AppleJack program right. I restarted holding down the S button--got a lot of words and then it just stopped. When I tried to type applejack auto nothing happened so I restarted again. And then I couldn't start up on the external (the internal HD still does the white screen). It would give me a screen saying I needed to restart-so I did a few times and decided it was hopeless.
So now I'm re-installing Leopard on the external to hopefully at least have that access to the internal drive.
I feel like I've tried a lot but also wasn't able to do a lot of it. And I'm just hoping I haven't killed it past repair.

    Hello,
*"--Disk Utility--inserted Leopard DVD, restarted held down the option button, Disk Utility."*
When booting from your restore disk, you have to hold down the C key until you see the Apple logo.
Then you can access Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu to verify and hopefully repair the disk.
"The log does have the same problem as my internal did with disk utility "invalid record count, Volume check failed" It also has 331 other lines I don't understand."
Reinstalling Leopard on a the disk with errors won't work.
If you have another Mac, you could try Transferring files between two computers using FireWire
If you have two Macs that are FireWire-equipped, you can connect them so that one of them appears as an external hard disk on the other. This is sometimes called Target Disk Mode.
    To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the other computer on.
Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer.
Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk.
Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable.
If you can't repair the hard disk with Disk Utility, go here and check out DiskWarrior

  • Replaced hard drive - now I get kernel panic when I load installation disk

    Hi all,
I just replaced a dead hard drive on my Powerbook G4. The Apple Hardware Test says everything is fine. When I put in the installation disk that came with my laptop (OS 10.2.3) and hold down the "C" key I just get the polite suggestion in several languages that I reboot--from surfing the boards I think this is called a Kernel Panic (?). If I don't hold down the C key the computer just crashes. It is possible that my installation disk is bad--was accidently stored in the attic for a couple of years and I only went to look for it after my hard drive died. However, the AHT disk was also stored up there and it worked just fine. I have the phone number for Apple to call about replacement disks, if no one thinks I've overlooked some other possible cause.
    Thanks,
    Lori

    Lori:
I am glad you were able to boot from your co-worker's disk. As you noted, that isolates the issue as being a faulty install disk.
It looks like I'll be purchasing 10.4.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail Version of Tiger. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales 1-800-692-7753.
You can find the Full Retail Version of Tiger, if you shop carefully, at online outlets like FastMac Retail $159; CDs $179, HardcoreMac Retail $199, CDs $249, AllMac Retail $149, CDs $179, etc. If you know what you are looking for, read all documentation carefully and ask questions of the seller, you may be able to get Tiger on eBay.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

whats the format on the external HD?
verify same on another Mac, its likely a dead SATA card inside the external enclosure.
One assumes you arent referring to a 2012 Air with a Toshiba SSD, since the Air contains no hard drives, only a SSD.
2013 Air use Sandisk or Samsung SSD.

  • When I went to back up my MacBook to an external hard drive, an error message said the backup could not be completed because an error occurred when creating the backup folder.

I used a backup hard drive for my previous PC, but I have not done a backup on my MacBook yet, which I got this summer. When I hooked it up to my computer, it started the backup fine, and then my computer went to sleep, and so I closed it to let it back up overnight. The next morning I saw that it had been interrupted, and that an error occurred; the backup could not be completed because there was an error in creating the backup folder. I'm not sure what to do now because my data has been erased off of my hard drive now to prepare for the backup on my MacBook, but will I be able to use this hard drive again? Will the error message always come up?  Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I am always suspicious of using a different OS to the one that was used to run the backup.. ie if you used Snow L to backup then there is absolutely nothing wrong with using SL to restore.
Mount the TC sparsebundle and verify it using disk utility.
    A5 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You might also like to load the widget in Time Machine so you get whatever the full error message is..
I cannot find any reference to the error code you are getting..
My recommendation would be to try it on a different computer.. restore the whole backup to an external drive large enough to accept the whole backup.
Use the manual methods pondini recommends.

Use ethernet only. Turn off wireless so it does not enter the situation.

Buy or borrow an external USB optical drive.
See the confirmation email or covering letter to obtain the serial number. If you have lost it, contact the supplier.

  • How do I get all my music library from my iPad to iMac after hard drive replacement?

Recently my iMac hard drive crashed and was replaced with a new one.  Thankfully the entire music library was still on my iPad.  However, with the new hard drive, iTunes will only let me move over the purchased tracks from the iPad to the iMac.  This is not good since most of our music was purchased on CD and loaded into iTunes.  iTunes states that you can only sync with one computer and the iPad is showning a different library than my iMac.  How do I fix this?  Apple is holding my legally purchased music hostage!

No, they aren't holding it hostage. You are relying upon Apple to provide a service  you should be doing by backing up your computer properly.
Some of the information below is summarized by turingtest2 in the post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18842615
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
    - Senuti - http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/

Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141 - dates from 2008 and some outdated information now.
Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/ - Information about use in disk mode pertains only to older model iPods.

  • After replacing a failed hard drive with new one I inadvertently created a different account name(home/user) than the one in the Time Machine backup. Now I cannot restore the photos in iPhoto. What are my options?

After replacing a failed hard drive with new one I inadvertently created a different account name(home/user) than the one in the Time Machine backup. Now I cannot restore the photos in iPhoto. What are my options?

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
