Replaced power supply, G5 still dead - now what?

I recently posted that my wife's G5 2.0 (June 2004) had made a loud pop followed by a burning odor, and the consensus on the forum seemed to be that the power source had died. I just replaced the power source, but when I tried to fire up the computer got no results; no light, no chime, nothing. The one thing that the computer IS doing now that it did not after the "popping" incident is that when I turn on the power strip that the computer plugs into, the computer makes a small clicking sound, like a switch being flipped, that it also made before (but not after) the popping incident.
Before taking everything apart and looking to see where I might have screwed up I'd appreciate any advice as to where I should look first. I thought the disassembly and reassembly went pretty smoothly, so I'm a bit bummed at the lack of a positive result (except for the clicking noise being back).
Probably not relevant, but I was interested to see that the power source I pulled from the computer was made by Lite On, so perhaps it had been replaced before I bought it 4 years ago.

So here's where I am now. I disassembled the computer to the point of pulling the heat sinks so I could see the connections to the power supply, except for the plug that sits under the supply and would require pulling the PS out to check. All connections look good. I also looked at the connections from the "start button" back to the boards, and they looked/felt solid.
I did find the SMU reset button that BDAqua mentioned, and that I hadn't found before. I put the good battery out of my own computer in, pushed the SMU reset button, then plugged in and tried to start. No success; no light or any sound when pushing the startup button.
Any ideas what to try next? Could something else have fried when the power supply went? Or could the original popping noise and burning smell been caused by something else entirely? Do I need to pull the power source to make sure the final connection is good? I sure THOUGHT I plugged it together well.
On the positive side, I've gotten really fast at taking the computer apart....

I don't see anywhere on Dell's website to purchase this.

So far there is no replacement/upgrade PSU for Dell Optiplex 9020 MT from Dell.
Will a dedicated power supply work for playing games? i bought this system as used (excellent condition) just for Gaming Purpose (GTA V), now i am stuck with the PSU issue. I can alter the case to fit the big size GPUs, but the issue is of PSU.
Will ePower EP-450CD can help me in any way.

Should I check the memory cards themselves? Reseat them?
    Yes.
Memtest X or Rember to test the RAM.
    Reseat is also good.
The iPhone 4 doesn't like USB 1.1 much.
after the update the computer was working well, except for this freeze when ever I connect iPhone.
I'd try USB 2.0 PCI. That's how I connect my iPhone 4s, and have connected all iPhones and iPods, to my G4.
    Never an issue.
Can't say the same for USB 1.1.......
The above (previous post) linked PCI card is cheap enough.
    Want cheaper, try this:

  • Replaced power supply same problem

took my imac g5 to apple store where genius told me it needed a new power supply because machine would not turn on and when it did just to gray apple screen Even though the serial number was in the range for extended repair program, i was told mine was to old and did not fall under any repair program. I replaced power supply same issue of gray/white apple screen and fan kicks on loud. reset pram, reset smu, checked diagnostic led lights 1,2,3 all light as they should. Cannot start up with discs either. Anyone with any ideas it would be much appreciated.

What a bummer! If you can get hold of the reseller, go after him for legal discs, if you can't get him, call Apple at 800-767-2775 and they will send you an appropriate set for a nominal fee.

Where can I buy a replacement power supply for my time capsule?

Apple do not sell parts for the TC..
And do not allow their OEM to sell parts.
So you need to bypass Apple and create your own.
    Or fix the existing one.

  • Replacement power supply for Airport N base station?

I'm in need of a replacement power supply for an Airport Extreme N base station.
Is this something I can pick up at a friendly neighborhood Radio Shack, or do I need to order the OEM part from Apple?
I don't need the automatic international voltage switching, just something that can power this puppy with US AC. Thanks.

    Tom welcome to the discussions.
I would probably call the Apple number.
    1-800-MY APPLE
I am sure that they can point you in the right direction.
I am a little shocked that one of the Apple Retail stores can't offer you a Power Supply.
If all else fails, it sounds like you have tried an alternitve, if it works use it, until you can get a replacment.

I would venture to say that your 3pin female adapter should be plugged into a 3pin male adapter on your motherboard.  This allows your system to control fan speed on the power supply.  I hope this helps you.

  • Need step by step directions to install a replacement Power Supply for a HP Color LaserJet 1215

I have a HP Color LaserJet 1215 printer that is only a couple of years old.  Had a power problem at home that burnt out the power supplies of two HP Towers, a DSL Modem, and (I think) the power supply of my printer.  I have located a replacement power supply but would sure appreciate any one that would know how to replace.  I need a step by step guide aas to how to perform such a task.
It would also help to have a diagram of the printer showing precisely how to get to the power supply.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.  I have spent days looking for this information and can't seem to find any.

  • 2008 iMac 8,1 still won't power up after replacing power supply

A few days ago my iMac powered-ON as usual at 8AM and was working normally, I checked email and left for a meeting. When I returned 30 minutes later my office had a slight odor of hot bakelite and the screen was dark, instead of displaying the screen saver. Thinking the power may have blinked, I pushed the start button on the back and nothing happened, tried several more times, then depressing and holding, still nothing - absolutely lifeless.
Presumed it was probably the power supply, so took it into the Genius Bar and my suspicion was confirmed; they checked the LEDs and advised that the power supply was mostly bad. Despite the hassle, the solution seemed simple enough: replace the power supply and I'd be back in business. That proved to be wrong!
Bought a new (NIB) power supply from a reputable dealer and carefully disassembled/reassembled the iMac feeling ever so confident that I'd hear the chime and fan whir when I depressed the ON/OFF Button. To my total disbelief nothing has changed! Its still dark and lifeless as before. Not discounting a theoretical chance that both power supplies could be bad I'm puzzled what to do next and where to look. Obviously, there isn't much in line ahead of the power supply, but given the fact there is no fan noise and no glimmer on the display, I can't fathom it could be anything other than something between the power cord and the power supply.
What could have caused the hot bakelite smell? The original power supply had NO bakelite odor and no burned chips, traces, scorched transformer windings or cooked capacitors. That had surprised me, so sniffed around the motherboard/backplane and detected a slight bakelite odor at or near the hard drive; I haven't cracked the case yet to examine the HDD - but, even if it were dead, I'd still hear the chime and fan, and maybe see at least a slight glow on the display, right?
And so, I'm calling on all you "pros from Dover" for some insights, wisdom and pointers to help me diagnose the problem and get the thing fixed. Your thoughts?
    Thanks, much, compadres. AK

My assumption is the same as KT’s, the logic board fried. If the logic board is functional, even if the hard drive is dead, it should power on and perform the POST. Since it isn’t my advice is the same as KT’s - hope you don’t need Snow Leopard to run some older program(s).

  • G4 1.42 dualie still won't start after replacing power supply.

This Machine was turning off randomly for about a week when it just stopped working. The power light would go on when pressed, but nothing happens.
Tried plugging into a wall socket instead of power strip. Nothing. Reset PMU. Nothing. Battery is good.
Read though many reports and determined the culprit was the Power Supply. The power supply was replaced with original Apple part. The problem remains. Press the power button and the light goes on, release it and the light goes off. Nothing spins up, no chimes, nothing.
Now I'm reading it may be the power button - someone solved the problem by attaching an older keyboard with a start button. I don't have one to test.
I don't want to keep shooting in the dark on this one.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi wagsfx, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Good research so far!
Now I'm reading it may be the power button - someone solved the problem by attaching an older keyboard with a start button. I don't have one to test.
Too bad you're not closer, I have 5 I don't need, because buying 8 was cheaper than buying on on eBay!
Anyway, my suspicion is that if that KB thing works it is the Power Button assembly, but that other things will start going wrong shortly there after.
It's likely not any consolation, but I think the MDDs are the worst G4 ever turned out, I wish I could have my $20+K back from buying, repairing, & upgrading them, since all 3 are now dead as a doornail.
Hang on though, there's many far greater experts here than I, & I hope they can drop in with some better ideas for you!

  • Dead ibook after replaced power supply

i'm trying to fix my mom's ibook for her. it hasn't powered up in a few years. apparently, she took it to a guy of questionable skills and he replaced the power supply. it then worked for a few weeks and died again. my question is this: could he have installed another bad power supply, or could something else in the computer be killing the power supplies? is there anything else i could try, like resetting it, to make it start up?
more details: the ibook has a brand new battery in it, and resetting the PMU has no effect on the machine.
    Message was edited by: saridout

I don't know what you mean when you say that he installed a power supply?
The power supply of an iBook is an external power adapter which plugs into the adapter port on the side of the iBook.
So, what do you mean "he replaced the power supply"? Do you mean he replaced the power adapter? Or did he replace something inside the computer? If so, could you tell us exactly what he replaced?
What is the MHz rating on the iBook? Which type of optical drive does it have? Which version of the OS is installed on it? How much RAM is installed? Do you know the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it?

  • What replacement power supply for m72e small form factor

    Simple question
I have a bunch of lenovo m72e small form factor pc's.
is the power supply a standard tfx or some sort of proprietary system.
I was thinking of upgrading and also preparing for furture failure contingency.

Many thanks for the update.  it is as i feared.  i hate the proprietary major components.... oh well, thank goodness for ebay.
also, much less important as I figured out how to sysprep a machine to move windows recently.  Since our office FINALLY migrated to windows 7 x64; any future upgrades will be fairly easy on a modern OS.
The m72e we purchased have 3 years support build in so it should be a while before I have to worry about servicing them.
Having said all this, the Dell vostro 200 systems we have are 7 years old and trucking along with no service issues so far.
Lenovo machines were cheaper / on sale at the time and dell has since discontinued their vostro line so we tried the switch over on 1/2 our workstations @ the office.
The speed of the system is fine but there are certainly some bios/hardware bugs that we have noted around the network card.
I doubt we will transition the rest of the systems to lenovo at this point.  Sure is easy to service when all your systems are from 1 vendor and the exact same lineage though.

  • Where can I buy a replacement power supply (model VP-09500018-000) for my 1st generation Time Capsule?

My 1st Time Capsule no longer powers on!  It was making noises for a while before it would no longer keep power / turn on!   I have taken the time capsule apart and could easily replace the power supply if I knew where to buy it   Can anyone lead me in the right direction?
    Thank you!

Apple do not supply it as a part.
You can repair the existing supply.

Plenty of people sell the caps set on ebay. Cheaper if you have a good electronics store handy but they need to be top quality low esr capacitors.
Substitute a different kind of power supply.
I definitely believe in using external power supply for this job. This is my own website so disclaimer.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
Or some original type are available on ebay. Just search for "Time Capsule power supply"
Or look at what a whole second hand TC will cost you.. a Gen3 or Gen4 can be a better proposition than repairing a dead Gen1.
You can also do a half repair.. By that I mean you only need one voltage to run the TC.. a single 5v 3A power supply plugged into the TC board socket or soldered directly in.. will give you an airport extreme Gen2 for $10. Plug the hard drive in by USB.. or use a bit of careful hacking and use a SATA cable to the post on the board and use a 2TB or even 3TB esata case.
You can also still buy a Cisco dual voltage supply on ebay.. but the wiring of it is a bit rough.
