Replaceing NB fan with heatsink (875P Neo-LSR)

I'd like people's opinion on wether or not you think a Zalman ZM-NB32J North Bridge Heatsink will be enough to replace the NB fan on an MSI 875P Neo-LSR. I would hate to damage the board.

I have been using MSI boards for a year or so now and the northbridge hsf unit has yet to disapoint me. Do not bother replacing the NB HSF unless it does indeed fail as you will lose your warranty if you replace it.

  • MSI 875P Neo-LSR & Northbridge Cooler

    Hi
Hi have a MSI 875P Neo-LSR motherboard and the northbridge cooler is making alot of noise!
I've already cleaned the dust from the fan, added some oil but it stills makes an anoying noise
    My question is this:
I don't want to spend €€€ in a new cooler because i'm upgrading my system in a few months so, will my motherboard survive without the cooler? But remaining with the heatsink...
I have a Thermalright XP120 with an 120mm fan in my CPU, which are very close to the northbridge, they might fresh a little the NB... And i got a good airflow in my case...
    My MB:

    Thank you for your answers!
Do you know the maximum temperature that the NB can get? Or the normal one...
I want to test if it's not getting to hot without the fan

Yesterday i tried to use CoreCenter and went to 215MHz (3.6 Ghz i think) with no hitch.
Now my question is with this configuration what can i reach and what to use (CoreCenter or Bios) ?
And which OC for the memory ??

I think use bios is better because of more flexibility. You can go up to about 3.5GHz.

  • MSI 875P Neo LSR Dead??

    Hi y'all,
Saturday 12th of juli I've bought some components:
    - Intel P4 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB
    - MSI 875P Neo LSR
    - 2*512MB Kingston HyperX PC3200 CL2
    - Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 Pro
    - Iiyama Vision Master Pro 413
After installing the whole bunch, I tried to boot the system but nothing happend!
So I waited for about 5 min. and booted again. This time almost succesfull but..... the only parts that were working are my fans (casefans, cpu-fan and the Northbridge-fan).
The powerswitch wasn't working (and it was installed correctly). I had to power the system via the powerswitch on my powersupply. So my guess was that my mobo was dead!
After returning the mobo back to my retailler, they concluded that it was dead indeed, so the gave me another mobo.
So after installing the new board, I tried to boot again, but still no succes so far.
My retailer tested the board again and it was also dead.
    Some symptoms:
    - Active fans
    - No HDD, floppy and DVD-player/Burner activity
    - Blank screen (display in standby)
    - Instant power on when I turn the switch on on my powersupply
I've tried different videocards, memory modules and clearing the C-MOS, bur nothing seems to help ;(
Can you please help me out????
    Thanks
    Best regards,
    Arjan

With regard to the motherboard stand-offs, motherboards dont always use the same amount or in the same position (the stand-offs are movable -either bending out of brackets in the case or unscrewing)
Always check ALL the standoffs line-up with screw positions for your moterboard before fitting, a wrongly positioned post can short-out PCB traces/pins
Another easily overlooked item is the square 4 pin 12v connector (older type power supplys dont even have one), the 12v power connector is located by the northbrige/AGP socket (the CPU will not start without this fitted)
Sometimes when physicaly altering a computer the reset or power-on (start) switchs dont line up correctly with their buttons -this can cause the switch to be permanently "on"
The power-on switch will cause the computer to "cycle" (constant restarting) and the reset switch will cause the computer to hang with-out initialising -try removing the reset switch connector from the motherboard
If none of those are the problem i would suggest trying a different power supply -or maybe your dealer could check the one you are using at the moment

  • Where to find M.A.T. in BIOS of a 875P Neo LSR?

    Hi y'all!
    Currently I'm using:
    P4 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB
    2*512MB Kingston HyperX PC3200 CL2
MSI 875P Neo LSR (BIOS v1.6)
    I'm wondering where I can enable P.A.T. or MSI's M.A.T.?
After reading something about BIOS version 1.6 enabling M.A.T. , I flashed from 1.2 to 1.6.
But where can I find this new option in my BIOS??
    Thank's :]
    Best regards,
    Arjan

Okay... Okay... This is generally for MSI, no reason to take offence.. anyone. Or maybe just the guy who never used computer(apparently) but designed BIOS for this board.
I Have NEO FISR2 motherboard, and the problems I have seem to be something like people here have.
PAT isn't enabled if you overclock. What ever you do, Ultra Turbo or turbo.. nothing helps. Is there a reson for this?
If I drop memory to 333 and raise FSB, should the numbers in BIOS at memory speed show what it actually is, never have done so... And if I raise FSB and memory speed is at 400MHz why isn't PAT enabled, memory isn't overclocked?
If I try to change manually setting for memory, like cas etc... Should it do something, or are these there just for fun, so you could IMAGINE the effects on your board.
Almost all memory related settings are in BIOS for some other reason than adjusting setting on this motherboard, they don't affect anything. At least not for me. Maybe I was wrong thinking this board could be user for overclocking, those volt settings propably are there for show too. Nothing to do with overclocking, because you will never get everything out from this board. At least not if BIOS is working like this.
I did simple test, raised volt for memory to 2.90. Whopee. Raised FSB to 230, and left the memory setting at 400MHz. Changed by hand Cas setting to more relaxed ones.
Quess, which changes of these actually did something? FSB and Volts. For some unbelievably stupid reason board changes automatically both CAS(VERY RELAXED) settings and memory setting. Try Sandra, see for yourself.
Please, let me know if I'm doing something wrong, this is new board and new BIOS, maybe I'm missing something...
OR this is the most lamest try I have ever seen to put out decent BIOS. Nothing makes sense, thank you very much for wasting hours and hours of my time while I was trying to figure out why everything didn't work like I expexted, after all, there where so many "pretty buttons to press" that did nothing.

  • MSI 875P NEO LSR versus Corsair TWINX

    HI,
I'm about to purchase the following parts:
    Mainboard: MSI 875P NEO LSR
Memory: 2 sets of Corsair TWINX 1024PC3200LL (2*512MB).
Is this mainboard capable of handeling 4 modules of the above memory?
I've also seen modules from GeIL, are they any good?
The module i've seen are: GeIL PC3200 Ultra.
I want to run my memory at the following timings: 2-2-2-5T
I believe Corsair is capable of that, but I'm not 100% sure if GeIL is. Atleast my retailer told me so.......
Can you please help me on this one? ;(
    Regards,
    Arjan

    Quote
My Corsair TWINX 3200LL runs fine with 2-2-2-5-8 settings at 400 mhz
    Ok, that's good to know
But do you know if the MSI 865 or 875 mainboard can handle Corsair TWINX 1024PC3200LL (2*512MB)? Because it's not mentioned in the memory.pdf file.......
    Quote
It may, or it may not, it just depends, running all 4 modules seems to make it harder to run at tighter timings.
Ok, so to achieve tighter timings, i'd better use 2 modules of Corsair TWINX 1024PC3200LL (2*512MB).
It's not cheap by the way..... it costs €375,- here in Holland. So that's why I want to know this memory ''thing''.

  • Issues with powering 875p neo

    Hello,
I am having some problems with the 875p neo, which seems to be the consensus here.  After changing the memory clock setting from 2.5 5 5 8 to 2 2 2 6, and vga to 64 to 128, voltage from 2.5 to 2.7, the computer upon powering up, the led light goes on, the cd lights go on, the monitor light stays orange, you can hear the fans working and otherwise appears to be booting up with the exception of a blank screen.  When I hit the reset button the monitor light turns green and boots up with no problems.  I set the bios settings back to factory settings, and restored my windows back to a previous day ruling out any possible conflicts.  It still happens.
After all of the above, I installed the live update from the website to upgrade the bios, and when performing the autosearch feature, it becomes non-responsive on "mainboard driver version".  I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it again and it hangs up at the same place.
Also, the hdd led light doesn't work with IDE harddrives
    These are the pc specs
    875p Neo motherboard
    Intel P4 processor
1024 mb of Corsair ddr3200 RAM
    Gforce 4 128mb graphics card
    Soundblaster Audigy soundcard
60 gig Western digital main harddrive
250 gig Western Digital slave harddrive (both hooked up onboard with an ide cable.
    Creative PC-DVDrom
    Cendyne lightning iv cd burner
    Any help would be appreciated.

I see you dumped the board, but to run a Sempron you have to update the bios to version 1.30. To solve errors in temp readings you want version 1.40.
I know you have to have a chip on the board to reflash the bios, but in all fairness, the Semprons came out after the board did, so having them not work without a reflash is understandable.

I am having problems with my new 875P LSR.  Installed O/S and software using FAT 32 and it wiped on 2 occasions.  Could not boot up trying all the sugestions on the web. Using Partition MAgic rescue disk I could still see the drives and was able to check for errors but when I used my old 98 boot disk C: came up with a message of invalid media but D: was still readable?  During both  the previous setups I used the F6 option and loaded the Intel raid XP driver for ICHR, was this the reason for my loss of system.
On my third try I used the same partitions but did not use the F6 option and also formatted in NFTS (by accident).  Everything appeard to be working so far BUT!!!!!.  I don't want the system to do over clocking I just want a secure setup for stability in normal use. I do not play games, I use the inter4net, edit my home movies and normal word processing,
    Questions
    What am I doing wrong?
What should the cofigreration for the bios onboard ID chip be. I have Mine set in Native mode, P ATA + S ATA, NO, NO, Both, S ATA 1st channel, S ATA PO1 PO2 Raid NO
Do I need to use the Intel IAA driver -or- does XP have drivers -or- do I have to download some other driver or controler for the S ATA.
Can anyone suggest a better layout for my system and how can I tel if the computer is operating with the proper drivers for S ATA, P ATA, H/T and all the other gagets on board.  Any suggestions and advise will be appreciated

    Hi back
Thanks again for the response, followed your instructions now I show a 82801eb under the controler section.  Is that all I needed?  Another question I like to keep a copy of windows 98 se on my other drive and would like to use the F11 key to boot to it.  Is there a procedure of installing it so I don't screw up my XP system.  I use a disk tray to keep the drive in so I can take it out for safety as I also store backups of my personel files on it.  Your sugestions are really appreciated.   Swan705

  • MSI 875P Neo-LSR

I have a MSI 875P Neo-LSR.  I installed Windows XP sp1 and everything in my computer.  All of a sudden it doesn't recognize my CD-ROM Drive.  It doesn't let me eject the drive.  I see the CD-ROM Drive in the bios, but not in Windows. What could be wrong? I also have the keyboard controller light in the USB indicator bracket light up sometimes I reboot the computer and it locks up.
    Motherboard:   MSI 875P Neo-LSR
Memory:   1GB Corsair DDR-400 Dual Channel
Video Card:   ATI 9700 Pro 128MB
    PSU:      Antec TRUE550 550watts
    AMI® BIOS:   1.3

Goto safe mode and delete the driver. Sometimes when you install SP1 it duplicates the drivers instead of updating them. Once you delete the driver restart into normal and it will reinstall the new driver for the cdrom.

  • Problem with my 875P NEO FIS2R when tyring to use x4 Crucial 512MB DDR modules

    Hi all
I have a problem with my 875P NEO FIS2R when tyring to use x4 512MB DDR modules. At first the system seem fine then it just hangs on me. All modules are exactly same and I have tried updating my bios and adjusting the settings but nothing works. My system is fine when using x2 512MB moduels. I have searched the forum and found no clear answer although there are other people with this problem. Please can anyone let me know if there is anything I can do with my current configuration to make the x4 512MB DDR work?
From other posts I have learned so far that I either have to buy Paired modules from the manufacturer (which is no use because I bought my first x2 DDR a year ago) or only use x2 and now Dabs isnt taking the other x2 that I just bought because there is nothing wrong with the modules themselves (its the mobo).
I built my system from scratch and wouldnt have been able to have done it without previous assistance so thanks in advance for any help

Relaxing the timings will enable your RAMs to run at higher latencies so that they do not need to go extra mile to catch up with the transfer rates with the FSB.
Lowering the frequencies is like underclocking a speedy twin turbo to a standard single turbine which means lowering of speed so that the RAMs can run lower than expectations which'll be able to provide room for o/c'ing back near to its original frequency.

  • Probems with msi 875p neo Fis2r and network controller driver

Hi guys just wondering if anyone could help me with my msi 875p neo FIS2R and problems with the network controller driver/network card.
I'm running xp on a computer my nextdoor neighbour gave me. I got it working fine  with service pack 3 installed but then installed a bunch of windows updates last night and the computer would switch itself off before windows could start. Now I reinstalled xp and unfortunately it does not recognise the network controller/card at all now. I tried installing the intel network controller drivers but it stopped because it said no intel adapter/card was installed/present. Could anyone please help with suggestions? I tried running everest and under newtwork it doesnt list intel network adapters but I'm pretty certain it is. Again any suggestions?

How can I disable AGP Fast Write with the MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R ? I can't find an option for this in the BIOS !

You wont usually find this option in most MB BIOSES , as the only Option that SOME BIOSES Have is the Option to enable, disable SBA (Side Band Addressing) for the AGP Bus....In order for you to Disable or Enable the FW, You Must have the Option in your Vidio Drivers Controll Panel.....If you have a NVIDIA Card, you Must go to  http://www.guru3d.com  And Download the program "NVHardpage" and then Open the Program and you wil have the Choice to Enable these options and they will then appear in your Vidio driver CP >> "Activate "Coolbitts" (this is NVIDIAS Overclocking Utility) Activate "Harware Options", and then Activate "AGP Options" and finally Activate "Performance Options"........If you have a ATI Card then you must Download one of thier "Tweeking Utilities".......I will Post the Direct "Link" for NVHardpage in a Minute, just say yes to the Lic. • Replace Northbridge fan with waterblock or heatsink?

    Hi,
I just got my K8N Neo2 Plat installed and it works great! However, the fan of the northbridge is too noisy imho so I'd like to replace with either a waterblock (currently using a Zalman Reserator 1 for the cpu) or a heatsink. What options are there on the market that will fit on the Northbridge?

If you plan to use a card, like this one:
then it might not fit, but it surely will, if you remove the cooler to install a waterblock on the VIDEO CARD
If you use a card like this one:
then it will fit eitherway. In general it will fit, if the card does not need to occupy space that normally belongs to the #1 PCI slot, in the area right above the chipset
Exactly what chipset water block are you using?? The capacitor that resides in the lower right corner, next to the long narrow heatsink in the 2nd image above, will block the NE pin/nut screw on my DD Z-Chip block...

  • 875P Neo-LSR/ FIS2R died after setting perf. mode to turbo

I work with my computer about 4 years in same basic configuration (p4 2.8, 2x256 ocz pc3700 and 2x256 mushkin pc3500) always running in 400fsb. Yesterday i decided to play with those performance modes in bios to check the maximun i could get out of memories latencies. OCZ spd is 2.5-7-7-9 and mushkin i think it was 2-5-5-7, but i always work without problem setting manualy to 2.5-5-5-8.
So yesterday i changed the performance mode from fast to turbo mode and the computer was working ok.
Then i restarted and changed to 2-5-5-7 and perf. mode to ultra turbo. After i saved the configuration in bios, my computer stoped to respond. The computer remain on, HDD led on, but no post screen and no beeps in start up.
I already tried to clear cmos a lot of times, but it doesn't work. No beeps or screen on startup. It's like when u turn your computer on without the processor on socket. I did this without all periferals and still same result.
Does i have any other way to clear cmos to default configs?
Now i'm waiting the answer from the tech assistence store to know if my mobo or my processor is damaged.
