Replacement drives for a Macbook Aluminum.
I'm thinking to boost performance by replacing the existing drive (160GB 5400rpm) with a larger and faster drive (250 or 320 GB 7200rpm).
My question: offerings include drives with 1.5 mbps or 3.00 mbps, designated as 150 and 300 respectively. Will a 300 drive be compatible with the Macbook WITHOUT the need of any kind of adjustment, like moving a jumper or something similar? A pre-sales support person at the manufacturer/supplier site answered that no further adjustment would be required. Without prejudice to the support person, I'd very much appreciate feedback from hands-on-job users. Thanks for the attention.

It all depends on the particular drive. Some 7200 RPM drives seem to be power hogs while others are equivalent to 5400 RPM drives. The older ones definitely did, while some of the newer ones seem to buck the trend of newer 7200 RPM drives using less power.
Some of the newer 5400 RPM drives with higher data density have effective data transfer rates near or better than some older 7200 RPM drives. Of course the state of the art 7200 RPM laptop drives probably offer the fastest performance.
As far as the jumper issue goes - it depends on the drive. Some do auto-sensing just fine while others need a jumper. You'd have to check with the manufacturer.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

My guess is they wouldn't introduce new production line just for the 1 or two milimeter difference. They will probably just change their marketing material and websites to add Retina as compatible. Then again I'm not a manufacturer.

There are many sources for compatible 2.5" laptop SATA interface hard drives and SSD's.
I've used Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) for a number of upgrades, and highly recommend them if you're in the US. OWC also posts helpful videos on YouTube showing step by step removal and installation instructions and the tools required for most Mac models. If your old drive is still functioning, but you're simply running out of space, you might also consider purchasing an upgrade kit that includes an external 2.5" drive enclosure with USB interface. Then you first install the new drive in the external enclosure and 'clone' the contents of old drive to it, then swap the old drive for the new one, and use the old drive in the external enclosure as a backup drive, to test new software and OS upgrades, or to store video, photos, and audio. -

M@cmuftThere is no capacity limit on the MacBook but I believe you will need a drive of maximum 12.5mm deep, to be certain I'd try to get a 9.5mm drive. 7,200 rpm drives are usually a little noisier and will use slightly more battery power when running. The "sudden motion sensor" is built in to the computer, not the drive - do be careful when buying your new drive as drives with built in drop protection can cause issue with the SMS in the computer. You can disable the SMS if need, just Google for instructions.

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive. But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

What is a good solid state hard drive for a Macbook Pro (2007 model)? I imagine they're still expensive, but I'm curious which would be good picks if I were to go for it.
I am using the Corsair P256 (256 GB) SSD. It is actually a Samsung drive. It works well, but will only give you part of the speed advantage due to the fact that the MBP from 2007 only has a 1.5 GB/s interface, while newer MBPs have a 3.0 GB/s interface.
Impact on battery run time seems to only be an increase of 15-20%.
Boot time on my MBP is 40 seconds to login prompt. System seems very responsive. -
