Replacement G5 won't recognize graphics card for iMovie

Here's what's going on: I just bought a used, replacement G5 Tower on eBay and moved the HD from my dead G5 to it. Booted up fine, and everything works - EXCEPT iMovie! I get a dialogue box that says:
*Your computer contains a graphics card which may not support iMovie.*
iMovie requires a "Quartz Extreme Compatible" graphics card. Certain iMovie features such as Themes, Ken Burns Photos, and Video FX may not work properly with your graphics card."
I tried it anyway and it will not play any clips. It shows a still of the thumbnails, and you hear the sound track being played, but no video footage is shown (black screen). I tried this several ways, including importing a clip from another project to a new project. Nothing changed.
How could this be? Did my eBay-bought G5 possibly have a different graphics card installed? What's going on? I need to resume my video projects!

Difference in graphic cards for Imovie HD edit

Hi.
I plan to get a new Imac for imovie HD editing, upgrading a 2 ghz imac that is very short in memory, HD, and speed. I don't play games or do any 3d renderings.
What i would like to know is which process of the Imovie or Iphoto software would be benefited with better graphic cards.
For example for time consuming process like exporting a movie or doing a clip stabilization is it faster to have better graphics (4850 vs nvidia 130 vs nvidia 120) or faster processors (3.06 vs 2.93).

You will be much happier with 4850 especially when it comes to video like in iMovie or FinalCut. This is both immediatly and in the long run. 4850 will allow for a snappier GUI, much better performance under snow leopard, great video and image quality. (just do a search for which gpu platform video or photo creatives prefer on the mac. Ati usually wins out and Nvidia usually wins for 3d work IMHO.) Both 4850 and gt130 are great options though.
In the past ATI has had better drivers for the Core image and video functions in the mac. Recently, however, the 8800gt from Nvidia has seen significant improvement so the gt130 may not be a bad choice either.

As I'm sure you already know, http://www.apple.com/imac/features.html#performance has some nice charts demonstrating the massive gains in the GPU with each upgrade (gt 120, gt 130, 4850). I just want to point out that the gains in ~100MHz CPU will pale in comparison to a GPU change.
The future is with using the GPU as a co-processor. Apple will do it. PCs are already doing it!!

Also, you can always get something like the turbo.264 HD. It has some quirks. I have never used it. I just use it to show that the CPU is greatly complimented by dedicated hardware such as this device or your GPU.
Suffice it to say, the GPU will be THE best option for you in my opinion.

Are you able to buy an advanced graphics card for this a TOSHIBA SATELLITE L450-188 instead of the bog standard one which comes with the machine because the frame rendering rate when i watch DVD's are appalling and also I am doing a Graphics A-Level so i need to use Adobe Photoshop's 3-D features but as expected the graphics card is not fast enough or big enough to support it please could somebody help??

Vga card is integrated into the motherboard and you have to replace the whole motherboard. Even if it's not integrated into the motherboard and the mobo can handle it, the problem in Bios if it can recognize it.

Looking for a Good Newer or at least better Graphics Card For M58 ThinkCentre

I'm trying to find a graphics card for my M58 ThinkCentre. I know it needs to be low profile. but i need something that will fit into my Pc. I got one of the low profiles before and found out the fan was to big even with the case off i couldnt fit it. Can anyone help me with this? Giving me some Links or Ideas on what will be able to use for my pc? Im trying to at least get a 1 gb one so i am able to play my steam games that i have. All i need is the updated Graphics card for them. Also something in the range of $30 to $70. if not possible thats okay at least ill get a idea. Just very lost and spent many hours trying to figure it out with no luck!

Unless you have a tower case this won't work. It's a full-size card. Your original post said you needed low-profile, and this is not such a card. I assume you have a SFF case if you wanted a low-profile card.
That's why I suggested the low-profile Sapphire R7-250, which is single-slot, low-profile, low-power, and still GDDR5 memory with a 72GB/s bandwidth. The earlier posted link (by Toruk-Makto) to a 250e is broken, so I don't know what that card that's describing. But any low-profile R7-250e card I've found myself (e.g. this one from XFX) has two bad things going for it:
(1) it's memory is DDR3 instead of DDR5, which right away sets its bandwidth to about 1/3 that of the Sapphire R7-250. You want DDR5 memory if you can get it.
(2) it doesn't indicate that it comes with a low-profile bracket as well as a full-size bracket (as the Sapphire R7-250 does), so even though the card itself appears low-profile in size you won't be able to install it in a SFF case unless you have a low-profile bracket (as the Sapphire R7-250 does). Maybe it's just the writeup for the R7-250e which overlooked the second low-profile bracket also included, but the picture shown is with a full-size bracket.
Note: the full-size bracket on the XFX R7-250e supports full-size DP and full-size HDMI as well as DVI. The low-profile bracket on the Sapphire R7-250 supports mini-DP, micro-HDMI and DVI. The retail carton also includes two adapter cables so that you can connect full-size DP and full-size HDMI cables, connecting them to the adapters. Personally I would buy a separate straight-through cable with the proper desired connector at both ends, as I don't like adapters. So for example I use a miniDP->DVI cable (from Monoprice) in one of my machines that has this card and two monitors, to connect to a second monitor which only has DVI, as I was already using the DVI connector on the card to go to my first monitor which also only has DVI.

While recently discontinued, you can probably get your hands on an nVidia GTX 285 fairly easily. It's not only faster than your Radeon HD4870, it has double the video memory, and more importantly it's on the shortlist of cards that are support hardware acceleration of the Mercury Playback Engine in Adobe CS5. That's a HUGE feature, if you use Premiere or After Effects, it's probably worth the price of admission right there. I've got one in my machine, works wonders. Aside from a zippy system, lots of basic stuff that used to have to be rendered in order to preview no longer require it.
The nVidia Quadro FX 4800 is also a bigger/faster card, and provides even more powerful support for the Mercury Playback Engine in CS5, but it's also vastly more expensive. As I type this the price is $1799 at Apple, and $1399 most everywhere else (Apple store managers, if you're seeing this you might want to check for a price drop).
That's the current max, but it's possible that new graphics cards are right around the corner. In the spring nVidia introduced their next generation of GPU, there are a range of new GTX 4xx series cards on the mainstream line, and just last week new Quadro cards were launched for the high end. Adobe does not support either of them for CS5's Mercury Playback Engine hardware acceleration at this moment, but Adobe employees have said that it's coming in an update soon.
It's also likely that the ATI Radeon HD 5770 & Radeon HD 5870 will be released for the Mac. My understanding is that the 5770 performance is on par with your HD 4870, and the 5870 will blow it away. Both the new ATI cards also boast two mini displayport plugs as well as a DVI out. Neither card is likely going to get support for hardware acceleration in CS5 anytime soon (not really Adobe's fault, ATI are still in their infancy on the high performance/OpenCL front compared to nVidia).
My advice, if you need something now, chase down a GTX 285 and you won't be disappointed (especially in CS5). Otherwise, you may want to wait it out and jump on the next generation if/when it becomes available.

iPhoto won't recognize SD card placed directly into my iMac's SD slot. Image Capture shows the name of the SD card but does not show any photos. If I use the Finder I can see all of the photos on the sd card so I know they are there. I've previously imported lots of photos from teh SD slot directly into iPhoto. Tried a second SD card with the same issue.

Make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

If you don't recover the photos with the above you'll need to run a recovery app like MediaRECOVER to recover the photos from the memory card.

Yes, you can upgrade the video card from your existing one, to any of those listed in chapter 3 of the service manual at the link below, starting on page 26.
In order to upgrade the video on your notebook however, the entire motherboard needs to be replaced.
The costs attendant to doing such an upgrade would exceed the cost of buying a new notebook with the graphics solution you want, after selling or trading yours in.

Recommended Graphics Cards for Encore / Premiere

I started a thread yesterday regarding trouble I am having with Encore CS4, specifically, my "Monitor" window just stops, well, monitoring after a short time while manipulating fairy straight forward 720x480 AVI files. Rather than reiterate it all, here's the link:

It's a new system that I'm using. I had been using Encore successfully for the last 6 months on an older, slower machine - Windows XP Home, 4GB memory, ONE processor core.
Everything about the new system should improve the performance of Encore: 8GB of memory, Quad Core, 2.5GHz a HUGE harddrive. The only two things that I see could be the cause of my new problems are:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Different Graphics Card (Intel G43/G45 Express)
I've updated EVERYTHING: Windows 7, display drivers, card drivers, the Roxio PX Engine (4.18.16a). All that's done.
I've heard from many people that they are getting along fine with Windows 7. I am leaning towards this graphics card as the problem. The system was, overall, a great deal but I neglected to ask about the the amount of graphics memory in it.It's just one of those mother board embedded scenarios. I don't know if I should expect much from it.
So, I was wondering if anybody had any experience with this "card". If not, I was wondering if there was a recommended graphics card for Encore and Premiere. A minimum recommendation for graphics memory?

Many have had problems with embedded Intel graphics chips and various Adobe programs.
For the vast majority, replacing that with either an ATI, or nVidia, has solved the issue.
Though it is overkill for general NLE and authoring, I love my nVidia Quadro FX-4500-512MB has worked perfectly. It is older, and more than you need.
On my laptop, my nVidia GeForce 8800M GTX 512MB has also performed very well.
One is a higher-end, albeit older, 3-D card, and the other, a "mobile" card. What I am getting at is that most of the offerings from ATI, or nVidia should work perfectly, and better than the Intel chip - plus either source will provide many more new drivers, and in a much more timely fashion, than the Intel.

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.

10.8.5 won't recognize my camera for download

My computer won't recognize my camera for picture downloads. Worked before with older Mac system.

Your Panasonic should work fine under normal circumstances.
Remove the firewire hub from the loop. It will be a trouble maker.
Formatting must be Mac OS Extended. To check it, go to the firewire icon on your Desktop and right click it then select Get Info.
If it's not Mac OS Extended, use the disc utility to re-format, be aware that this will erase all files so BACKUP any imortant files before proceding.
You will need a spare firewire port to plug in the camera. Some externals have two, if yours has two, try it, otherwise you will have to add the suggested card to add the additional port.
Does the G4 have two?
The card arrangement gives you an additional BUS and is light years ahead of a firewire port for video editing.

This weekend I’ll be taking my rig to a PC repair shop and ask them to swap out my PSU and my graphics card.
Because I’ve RMA’d all the components (see signature) several members of different forums, and the tech support of the various components, seem to think that my boot problem is because of a compatibility issue with either my Ultra X3 600W PSU or my XFX 8600 GT and my P35D3.
I need to be ready to make decision, without having time to research, if the repair tech recommends a replacement.
Here’s my considerations:
I selected the Ultra because it's both modular and 85% efficient (it also has the required 8-pin cable to power the P35D3's CPU and it has SATA power cables.
I selected the XFX 8600 GT card because it is dual-link (2 DVI outs -- Dell 30” & Viewsonic 19”) and it has no fan, and is DX10 ready. I’m not attached to the idea of no fan. I’m a speed freak but not a gamer or an over clocker--I like the option of trying out games.
Both the Ultra and the XFX are somewhat medium priced.
If the repair tech discovers that other PSUs or graphic cards work then I might be able to get Ultra or XFX to accept a return. Neither company accepted my offer to pay extra to exchange mine for another better model.
Suggestions please.

Graphics card for a G5 Quad 2.5

Can anyone recommend a graphics card for my G5 Quad core 2.5? I'm interested in a card for gaming, video editing and graphic composition. I currently have a NVIDIA Geforce 660 256mb but would like to know whether I would benefit from a bigger, more powerful card. And which one to get for a Quad G5 running Leopard.

The 7800 GTX has 512MB of VRAM. They are PC models, but, if flashed to Mac ROM, they work as a Mac card.

There are no cards available with more than 512MB VRAM that are compatible with the G5 dual core machine.
As for compatibility, a card must be either a Mac Edition, or, if a flashed card, specified Mac compatible. A flashed card replaces the PC ROM with a Mac ROM, thereby eliminating most compatibility problems.
I say most, because some flashed cards do have limitations. The 7800, though, has a Mac edition, so the ROM used to flash the PC card makes a good, compatible card.
Some flashed cards also have OS X version limitations. This is due to drivers within the OS. Typically, the newest cards will only run on later versions of OS X. This is because the older versions of OS X don't have the necessary driver support.
For instance, this 7800 GTX requires OS X 10.4.6 and above.
