Replacement ibook g4 battery doesn't fit: compatibility issue or defect?

The battery in my 14"  iBook g4 stopped holding a charge, so I ordered a replacement through Ebay where it was listed as an Apple battery for a 14" iBook.  Once it arrived I saw that it was labeled as Model No. A1062, whereas my old battery was an A1080.  They looked identical externally so far as I could see, but I can't make the  A1062 fit into its slot--one corner stays elevated.  Have I just ordered the wrong thing--are A1062 and A1080 supposed to be incompatible? Or is there something wrong with the battery?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

They should be the same.  But due to a recall on those batteries, you may have just bought a swolen battery from someone.  http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.welovemacs.com/ both try to stock the real McCoy.

  • Battery failure although my battery doesn't fit the exchange program?

    hello there!
i know there have been a lot of threads about the battery life and failures in the macbook pro but i don't know which one fits my case...
my mbp is a week 13 and has no problems at all. i don't use the battery that often - by now i have 14 cycles.
my battery's serial number doesn't fit the exchange program but today happened this odd thing:
i used my mbp on battery for less than two hours and the battery symbol said that i still have about 50 minutes of battery power. all of a sudden it turned off (as described in many other threads) without any warning and i couldn't turn it on without plugging in the power cable. when i turned it on it started from deep sleep mode (dimmed desktop).
...of course i did reset the pram and stuff - but what is going on? as i said i don't meet the exchange program for faulty batteries but still it doesn't seem to work proper.
    what can i do?
    thanks in advance, guys!
    j.

hi and thank you all for your replies so far!
over the weekend i took some screenshots showing the various total of mAh. i have no idea if that is normal like this? and the battery is behaving normal again, no random shutdown... you can find the images under the following link...
    http://www.propaganda-pixel.de/mbp/mbp.htm
in addition i added a photo of my magsafe... now that it comes to the battery issue i got slightly concerned if this crimpy cord should be like this (not that this thing starts to melt on me!).
when i transport my mbp i wind the cord around those two hooks and i never pull the magsyfe by the cord out. but still it looks like this.
the power cord is from a week 10 macbook pro which i got exchanged for a week 13 but i had to keep the cord...
i know, this has nothing to do with the battery issue and no, i'm not paranoid - just now that i started this thread i thought i could add it...
    so my questions are:
    - shall i request a new battery considering the various mAh indications?
    - shall i request a new power cord? or does mine look normal?
why i ask is because i don't want to request something when there is no need for a replacement.
    thank you all!

  • IBook G4: battery doesn't charge

After about seven years my iBook battery had lost stamina. (Although there was still more than an hour of energy left after charging it.)
After buying a new one (Dill-5200mAh) I was pleased to get a battery capacity for more than five hours. Unfortunately things changed after about 20 load cycles. Now when I try to charge it, the plug soon turns from amber to green although the battery still has only a very low capacity.
According to 'coconutBattery'  the capacity is brilliant (5363mAh).
I also found out that charging seems to work while iBook is switched on.
    Any idea?

    Hello,
There are a few thing here.
    1. Could be a faulty battery. I want out rule that.
    2. It could be a problem with your power adapter.
    3. Could be an internal problem.
I would check the power adapter and then check the Battery both with a replacement. (or spare)
If you get the same results, then it's  internal fault and do doubt lays with the DC In board.

  • Replacement iBook G3 battery not recognised - non Apple brand

    Hi World
    Try this conundrum for size...
I bought 'new' (non-Apple) battery on Ebay and my iBook does not appear to recognise it. i.e amber charge light does not illuminate - it stays green. I've done a PMU reset, Battery Rest 2.0, Restarted the iBook etc etc - nothing seems to work. The only reason I want a new battery is to avoid resetting the date every time I restart the iBook - I never travel with it and it's always powered from the mains electricity.
For information - the original (dead) Apple battery happily illuminates amber - but obviously can not store a charge.
I have also received a replacement for the intial new battery and it is still showing the same response i.e. no amber glow
Is there a printed circuit in these batteries that is needed to say 'hello' in an exact way and therefore allow charging to occur? If so, if I were to extract the new cells from my new battery and somehow wire them into the old Apple case, would that work? (I have read about spot soldering and it sounds a bit daunting)
    Any answers gratefully appreciated

FIRST: You wrote "Is there a printed circuit in these batteries that is needed to say 'hello' in an exact way and therefore allow charging to occur? If so, if I were to extract the new cells from my new battery and somehow wire them into the old Apple case, would that work? (I have read about spot soldering and it sounds a bit daunting)"
I think these batteries do contain some electronic circuitry, but I don't know whether that's the source of your problem (read on). In any case, with many years of technical work under my belt, I would be reluctant to attempt the cell transfer you suggest -- batteries have a way of being more dangerous than people think, as there's a fair amount of energy stored there.
But, on to your problem. You might nott want to say, but I'd be interested in the source of these batteries, as I'm in the middle of a "new" battery experience that has some similarities:
For reasons I won't go into, I have four iBooks in my possession -- and all had batteries in various states of decrepitude (some wouldn't take a charge at all, some would take different amounts of charge at different times, all were essentially useless). BUT ALL WERE RECOGNIZED BY THE COMPUTER.
So I purchased, on-line, two new batteries and they were delivered quickly. BOTH of them worked immediately and perfectly in TWO of the four computers, but went totally unrecognized in the other two computers. After considering the possibilities, I concluded that the problem might well be a very small misalignment of the connectors in the computers that didn't work with the connectors on the new batteries. (I'm talking about the plastic-shrouded 6-pin connectors, one in the computer and one on the battery, that engage when you install the battery). There is precedence for this kind of issue, as I have seen reports on the web of people resorting to cardboard shims to improve the engagement of the connectors. But, in my case, there simply is not room for any such shims, and nudging the battery one way or the other (a tiny distance) didn't make them work.
I had unrelated internal work to do on one of the two computers that didn't recognize the batteries.
While I had it apart, I replaced the battery charger board, which incorporates one of the mating connectors. (+I didn't suspect the electronics of that board, rather the physical positioning of the board as secured in the computer case, or of the connector on the board+.) The result was that this computer now worked with one of the new batteries but continued not recognizing the other new battery.
What this comes down to, I think, is a physical tolerance issue -- probably with the lateral positioning of the connectors, either in the computer, or on the battery, or a combination of both. It could also have to do with the connector condition. The connector in the computer is obviously (usually) as old as the computer itself; the connector on the battery is . . . who knows? Although the battery is said to be new, the battery manufacturers may somehow make use of old battery cases (and connectors). Most if not all connectors rely on some spring tension in the contacts to keep the contacts mated, and the contacts can also be affected by corrosion -- and deterioration of older connectors is simply a real possibility.
Would be really interested in what approach you take and the results. Please post back.
There seem to be a lot of sources for these batteries on-line, but it's possible they all come from a small number of outfits (or even just one outfit) that builds (or rebuilds) them. If, ultimately, all the battery cases (with the connector) come from just one source, then the problem might be likely to show up no matter what your source (or the name on the battery, etc.) If I'm correct on this, then it's going the be a gamble as to whether a battery purchased from another source will solve the problem.
But, what choice is there? I think your best bet might be to return that second battery and then buy another one from . . . ? (somebody different). Or maybe someone who follows this forum can name a recent supplier with which there has been no problem whatsoever.

  • Battery Doesn't Fit

I recently bought a battery for my PB 12" online, and it is sticking out of the place where it fits, it should fit perfectly in, but its about a centimeter off on both sides and is sticking out of the bootom, am i doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Can you tell us where you bought the battery? Is it an official Apple battery or a third party one? Can you tell us what the model number is?
To answer your question, it should fit properly. Possible reasons that it isn't include:
It's the wrong battery for your PowerBook (e.g. a battery made for a 15" PowerBook you bought by mistake)
    It's a 3rd party battery that isn't made to Apple's specifications.
It's the correct battery, but it isn't inserted correctly. This is unlikely, as if the battery isn't inserted correctly (especially 1cm off the way you describe), it wouldn't be supplying power).
Your answers will hopefully lets us get a better idea of what's causing the problem.

  • Compatibility issues or defective card (6600GT)?

    I just put a computer together with MSI's 6600GT AGP 8x, a Chaintech S1689 Socket 939 motherboard, and the 90nm Athlon 64 3200+ .
Everything seemed ok until I tried running games.  World of Warfcraft would freeze upon opening, sometimes causing the computer to restart.  Counterstrike would run with crazy artifacts and freeze or not run at all.  I switched in an old Geforce3 Ti 200 and everything runs fine.  We grabbed a 450w power supply to be sure that power wasn't an issue.  Unfortunately we didn't have another computer to test it on.  In addition, we made sure to try multiple versions of MSI drivers but to no avail.  And yes, the external power connector for the graphics card was connected.
I'm just wondering what you guys think... did we get a defective card, or is there some known issue with Chaintech motherboards that I haven't discovered yet?
    Edit:
One more thing worth noting... installing the newer nVidia drivers caused an incompatibility that would result in the computer restarting upon startup.  This required starting up in safe mode, removing the nVidia drivers, and using MSI's drivers.

Shoemucker,...just so you are aware....I have a Chaintech s1689 also...I ordered a 9600Pro to go with it....it worked fine..but was too slow on MS FlightSim 2004....OK, here's what happened; I installed the 6600GT, everything in 2D worked fine....but then I went to try 'FS 2004' which is 3d.   It went into the menu fine...but as soon as I tried to get past the menu the computer shut down..and restarted.
I repeated this twice, shut down twice....so, figuring it was some 3D issue I went into DirectX 9c to run the D3D diagnostic. As soon I as hit 'run'..the computer shut down, and restarted...on the 3rd try of trying to run the diagnostic I hear a    PFTZZzzzzzzZZTT!!  'poof'  'pop!'---'smoke' 'smoke'   'smoke'...The PC goes blank...
I took the card out...there was black 4v capacitor dust spread over the card where it  had burst....dead card.   Put my old Nvidia MX400 in PCI..PC fires up again.
I RMA'd the card , and am waiting for the replacement presently.  I just thought you might like to know that you're not the only one this has happened to.    I am investigating in the mean time...and I offer to you any other info I can gather up...if you find anything I would appreciate a PM..but either way...Ill give you whatever I can find out.      I dont think this is anything like a 'driver' issue...there seems to be a voltage problem.   Dont plug the replacement in until you are SURE you know it will work. It's probably not just a bad card.
UPDATE:   I e-mailed Chaintech Tech Support to try to eliminate an 'incompatibility' possibility. I asked specifically if the 6600GT was compatible with the s1689.....this is the 'less than straightforward' response they gave me; and I quote:  Quote
"This is really weird, pls send us your board. This will cost $35 dollars if we find no board error."
So, I'm having a hard time understanding wether he meant that 'it's weird' that I was having problems.....or wether he just didn't understand the question. I'm having a very hard time finding anybody on the web that has run this board with a 6600GT.  I'll keep on lookin'...   Also, every other forum I've asked in tends to say it was just a bad capacitor, so go ahead with the replacement....So, 'shoemucker', you may have a weak capacitor, and you may do well to RMA it before any warrenty runs out, because if it really is a poor capacitor, it may wait just until the warrenty/refund period expires before going.  The symptoms are identical.

  • Replacement battery won't fit into my 3g touch wheel ipod

I just changed the battery on my 3g ipod, but the 850 aMh battery that is labelled "Replacement battery for 3G ipod" is bigger than the original 700 aMh battery. I can force it in, but I don't want to break anything. Has anyone else had experienced this?

I may have exaggerated that the difference in size between the 2 batteries is 1 cm. In order to make the new battery fit, I had to squeeze it past the lip of the surrounding panel rather than easily tuck it in as was the case with the original battery.
It may be the wrong battery, but how come multiple sites, including this apple authorized site I bought my battery from, are advertising the same exact battery as compatible with the 3g ipod? The battery says 3g right on it. If you have replaced an ipod battery, you must have come across different capacity batteries for the 3g. I appreciate the response, but Chris, are you saying its the wrong battery because you've replaced a 3g battery yourself and came across a multitude of sellers making this fraudulent claim, or are you assuming that the difference in size automatically means that it isn't the right battery.

  • IBook G4 Battery Capacity Way Down

I've had this computer for 12 months now, and noticed that the battery doesn't last more than an hour anymore. I grabbed CoconutBattery, and found that its Maximum Battery Charge is 1127 mAh, about 25% of the battery's original capacity. It has also had 215 cycles.
I've tried resetting the nvram, and the PMU (hit shift-ctrl-option-power, but nothing happened so I am not sure if the PMU was actually reset) and I'm still stuck where I am.
Is there any hope for this battery, or is it time to replace it?

My 14" 1.2ghz iBook was purchased in June 2004. We went to Colorado in August 2004 and my daughter was able to play one of the Lord of the Rings DVDs and most of the trailers before the iBook shut down.
This weekend coming back from Thanksgiving she was watching Lord of the Rings again and only got 2 hours and 42 minutes before the iBook shut down. She never got a warning displayed while the DVD was running but I have seen it when just in the Finder. Shouldn't an OS warning override any application even a DVD in full screen?
When I got home I downloaded Capacity Meter and it only shows 3302mah out of 4600mah! Only 51 cycles are shown also. I ran this Terminal command to verify it also:
    ioreg -l | grep -i IOBatteryInfo
I found this link on the Apple support site
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
There was this paragraph on the page:
    Battery Lifespan
A properly maintained PowerBook or iBook battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 300 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs.
My iBook is kept on power most of the time but occasionally I'll use it on the couch for an hour or so then plug it in. I've done a few discharges to where I get the warning dialog then I'll recharge it.
I was expecting the capacity to be down somewhat but it's only 72%. I have Applecare. Is this battery warrantable since I have only 51 cycles vs the 300 listed above? I see Newer Tech has higher capacity batteries. Are these batteries better, i.e. new chemistry?
    Thank for any advice.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter doesn't fit my aluminum iMac

I previously had a 17" white iMac (pre-Intel) machine, and about 6 months ago I bought the mini-DVI to video adapter so I could connect it to my television. Worked like a charm. But I recently bought a new aluminum iMac, and the adaptor doesn't fit into the mini-DVI port in the back of the machine. It appears the adaptor and port are both male ends.
Has the port changed on the aluminum iMacs? The product description for the adaptor on Apple's website says it works with iMac (Intel Core Duo). Isn't the aluminum iMac an Intel Core Duo? I can't figure out why it doesn't fit and which cable I'm supposed to be using instead.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Battery Doesn't Last The Day!!!!!

    Hello everyone,
I just purchased my Blackberry Pearl 8130 not even a week ago and the only thing bugging me right now is the fact that the battery doesn't even last a day. I left it for 6 hrs without touching it and the battery went down 40%!!!!
I am just wondering if this is a common thing with this phone, I mean I know the phone does alot, and I know it is constantly sending and recieving data or at least mine seems to be. I just want to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to improve the battery life! I mean when I first purchased the phone I let the battery run out and then charged it I am not charging it when it is half full, the battery is always dead when I charge it.
Also MSN messenger doesn't seem to be working either I am getting an error 67 failure to reach server....anyone else having this issue???
    Sincerely,
    Kat

Turn off the gps, if you have gps on the phone and turn off bluetooth, if you're not using it. That will help some. If this continues, go to your provider and ask them who to talk to about battery replacement. Occasionally, a battery just doesn't live up to its charge. Also, you should recharge these types of batteries when they are a little less than half way drained. They are better suited for this type of charging. Only drain completely maybe once a month or so. Hope that helps some. Sam

  • Text Doesn't fit warning

I'm getting ready to order a book and am getting a message that the text doesn't fit. I can't find the page where the problem exists (no warning icon is visible) and when I did preview the page(s) were not revealed. Is there a way to find the offending text?

It might be just returns that are doing it. You'll have to go to each text box, move the cursor to the bottom of the text with the down arrow key and then use the Delete key until you delete the last character, which you can then replace.
As you experienced the text box with overflowing text will display a red warning triangle like this:

  • Win 7 (Sony Vaio) Battery Doesn't Charge

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB11FM notebook with Win 7 64 and suddenly the battery doesn't charge. During shutdown, Win 7 was installing updates and before it was done it went off.
After that Win 7 doesn't recognize the ac adapter plugged in and the battery doesn't charge.
The updates downloaded are not running or installing.
I have tested the ac adapter and battery on a laptop exactly like my one. And it worked just fine.
There are no updates available for battery from manufacturer.
The charging light is off when i plug the ac adapter.
The laptop works without battery, but plugged in ac adapter.
    Plz, helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp...

    Hi
I've had a number battery problems to do with rapid
discharging and not charging properly - the batery was nearly new and previously had 3 hours life before an update ... Sony Support
have been worse than useless ... In case it helps (given that your problems started after your Windows 7 update) - my
problem was not the physical battery (or BIOS or drivers or a number of other things I checked) but the Sony VAIO battery management software which stopped working after I installed the 64-bit Windows 7 update Service Pack 1 (SP1).
There may be no harm in just trying to re-install the Sony VAIO Battery Checker software - it worked for me ... To do this, run
the VAIO Care Recovery and Restore programme (from the start menu), use the Recovery option  - Reinstall Applications and Drivers – and re-install the Battery Checker
    (tick the check box option).
    Hope this helps :)
Here's the full detail of what happened to me in case others have similar problems:
Warning to all 64-bit Windows 7 users:  Do NOT install Windows 7 SP1 !!!!!   If you do and
the Sony VAIO battery management software ruins your battery, Sony Support won't replace it but blame Microsoft instead.
After I installed the Windows 7 update for SP1 my battery performance died - the battery would
discharge from 100% to zero in only 52 minutes
(it was nearly 3 hours before installing SP1).  In a specific timed test for Sony Support the battery took 47 minutes to discharge to 50% and then rapidly discharged from 50% to zero in the following 4 minutes.  In
all tests I performed the machine did not ‘turn off’ but crashed as if the battery had been ripped out, prompting a safe-start by windows each time.  From zero charge, the battery was re-charging to 100% charge in about 20 minutes.
Sony Support were useless, so I started to read many technical discussion forums online and found that hundreds of Sony users
have the same problem with battery performance with no solution.  Many discussions online have led back to a wrong idea: that the Microsoft Windows system drivers –
    battc.sys and
compbatt.sys – used for Microsoft Composite Battery management are too old to be 64-bit versions.  This idea is because the Microsoft driver information
displayed in the Device Manager window shows a driver date of 21/06/2006, before Windows 7 64-bit was deployed.  However the actual hidden driver files in the Windows System folder (version 6.1.7) are dated 14/07/2009 and are indeed 64-bit versions.
I found this after I spent hours looking for new versions of the drivers and when I couldn’t find any mention, let alone new versions, I then checked the actual file properties myself and discovered the Microsoft drivers are fine (even though there is
a Microsoft Windows 7 error displaying the date using Device Manager).  Similarly, a number of people have updated their BIOS with no change to the problem (so I'm leaving that alone).
I then investigated other ideas – and eventually checked that the version of VAIO Power Management and Battery Checker
VAIO (part of the Sony Notebook Utilities exe) for my machine (VPCEB3C5E).  The latest versions I could see online (Sony sites) all appear to be the same versions as those already installed on my machine.
However, I tried one final, simple action and it fixed my machine:
I used the VAIO Care Recovery and Restore programme
    (from the
    start menu),
selected the Recovery option – Reinstall Applications
and Drivers – and re-installed the Battery Checker (check box option).
This fixed the problems with the battery management
where the machine suddenly crashes without adequate warning when the battery is discharging. The
battery now shows a steady discharge from 100% down to zero (remember, before it discharged quickly down to 50% and then from 50% to zero in the last 4 minutes). It also charges back up at a steady (safe) rate rather than rapidly.
Unfortunately, my battery is now damaged but Sony Support do not want to know.  In
the several weeks while the Sony software was not working properly the battery had been rapidly re-charged, over-charged and is now damaged.
The previous battery life of over 2.5 hours in normal use (let alone test conditions
doing nothing) has been reduced to less than an hour since the 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 installation.
     Things
cannot still be fully correct with the Sony battery management software because the
    battery health status in the
VAIO Control Centre is still displaying
    GOOD.
So Sony Support will not replace the battery, even though previously they contradicted themselves by saying I had to run industry standard tests - now when the tests show the battery is faulty Sony then go back to relying on
software that was the cause of the problem.  Unbelievable !!!
Moreover, the Sony European Support guy escalated my case (5568077) and the response he got was this is a Windows 7 issue and
not a Sony problem ... Therefore, should I ask Microsoft for a new Sony battery even though it was the Sony software at fault?  Even more unbelievable by Sony !!!!!!
So, all Sony VAIO Users - don't install Windows 7 SP1 and expect Sony Support to help.
Most of all - when the Sony VAIO battery management software ruins your battery, don't expect Sony to replace
    it.
And now for a bit of a rant to make me feel better ... This was the first time I've bought a Sony - I've had dozens
of Dells over the years but thought I'd try a VAIO for a change ... Given my recent experience guess what my next machine will be?  Sony may be making a small financial loss since the Tsunami and online PSP gaming / hacker problems, but with service like
this their VAIO losses will also be significant in the future - Sony just don't get that customers pay for and expect service when we buy a machine ... Idiots!
    Cheers RB, England

  • Ibook clamshell battery issue

Here's my issue: I was given a blue clamshell ibook to "fix" for a friend of mine who wants to use it to only surf the internet. They couldn't get it to turn on, it gave them a weird message and come to find out they had had it for a year and hadn't turned it on so the battery didn't charge. So I kept it plugged in and ended up having to reinstall the os 9.2 system, but then the battery wouldn't keep a charge, but the system would work when it was plugged in. So I ordered a battery off of ebay that said it was a "new" battery. I popped out the old battery and put in the new battery yesterday after getting it in the mail and I now have a "red X" over the battery and it said the system had reset to 1904. So I fixed the date and shut it down, but left the computer plugged in overnight but when I turned it on this morning it still had the red x, so I've left it plugged in turned the computer over, took out the battery and put it back in and restarted, but still the red x and nothing. So I'm thinking either their is a reset battery button I don't know about or the battery I got from ebay is bad even though they said it was new. Any help would be appreciated.

The iBook does not have a PRAM battery,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25911?viewlocale=en_US
so if your main battery doesn't hold a charge your date/time settings are lost.
If your iBook is connected to the internet you can automatically synchronize the Date/time settings with the apple server: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Date & Time.
