Replacement iMac

PPlease help if you can I purchased an iMac from apple on line for Christmas gift first used on 25th December. It is now not working and appears to be over heating or air blowing from back of computer this started three weeks ago. It took two weeks to get an apple appointment in the local apple store. Today they say as it wasn't purchased from them they will only repair it. I I contacted the on line apple were I purchased it on 6th December and they say that I should have returned it in two weeks but it wasn't broken then. They also say they will not replace this  12 week old computer. Really don't know what to do please advise me someone

Apple typically will only exchange goods within the first fortnight - after that it is a case of letting them repair it (under warranty in first 12 months or 3 years if you have the extended AppleCare).  The exception to this is where consumer laws in your country require retailers to offer replacement (check what the laws say in your country). 
The warranty starts from the date of purchase, not the date of first use, so it is indeed slightly more than 12 weeks old.

As it is 12 weeks old, Apple will repair under warranty (unless the computer has water damage or has otherwise been subjected to accidental damage, in which case the warranty does not apply) but a replacement is unlikely (no harm in asking - be polite not angry!).

    Not sure about the 2012 models but the 2010 ones can be removed in seconds, using a suction cup on the top corner. I use my tomtom to lift it away. It is attached by magnets.

    I am having the hard drive (from the recall) on my 2009 intel iMac in an hour in my home via Apple. I have 2 seperate backups on two different external drives. Both have Mountain Lion which I purchased when it came out. Apple specifies the tech will only put the install dvd that came with the iMac in 2009 which has 10.6.1. so will i have to update to 10.6.8 (can I even do this?) which is a Mountain Lion requirement and then firewire transfer from my backup drive? I'm looking (gratefully) for the exact steps. Thanks. dennis

    The easiest way to accomplish this, assuming your hard drive is working and it's being replaced as a precaution, is to make a complete bootable clone of the internal hard drive to one of your external drives using a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!. Then once the drive has been replaced, just boot your system from the clone and clone it back to the internal drive.

    I moved from China and need a new power cord to use in the USA. Where can I get a power chord that works with an early 2008 iMac. Online some seem to say I can use any generic cord, while others say that I need an apple replacement? I'm willing to get the real cord if needed but can't seem to find it. I can find cords for later and earlier models but not mine !

    Just read this:
    In UK, the same lead is used for electric kettles.
    That's actually false, and if used the other way around actually dangerous.
    First some terminology:
    C13: the (male) connector on the cable side of a computer power cable
    C14: the (female) connector on your computer
    C15: the (male) connector on the cable for your water kettle
    C16: the (female) connector on your water kettle
    The relevant standard is IEC 60320.
    I have to to warn against trying to use a C13 cable in a C16 socket. The C13 cable is NOT resistant the the high temperatures these devices use. The C16 socket prevents the C13 plug from being inserted in normal use, but some "clever" - not so clever if it goes wrong - modification might allow it in and might well cause serious problems such as a connector melting and shorting out as a result.
    Using the C15 cable in a C14 equipped device is safe, no worries. Just don't use the computer cable for your water kettle.

  • DIY HD replacement iMac 2011

    I was about to purchase an new HD for my 2011 27" iMac to replace the existing one since I started to notice errors and performance issues. Mainly PM kernel: disk0s2: I/O error. I came upon sites indicating fan issues with generic (non Apple) SSD's or HDs. Apple store refused to sell me an HD and I can't loose the system for 24 to 48 hours for the repair.
    I'm currently downloading OS X to install on an external Thunderbolt drive and make it my default drive but I would very much like to replace the internal drive. My questions is has anyone replaced the HD and did you experience fan noise issues? Are there any drives that are compatible? Are there any other options that I have not yet considered?
    The price is not the issue for the repair but the fact that they cannot guarantee the data, they require full system access including administrator access and that this takes over 24 hours to perform. I took me about an hour to change the drive on my 24" 2007. I find it's getting harder to own a Mac and price has nothing to do with it.

    It's a problem related to using drives without the temperature sensor that causes the fans to go. The problem can be solved:
    Buy a replacement drive of the same exact make and model that you have and be sure it has the sensor.
    Buy an inline sensor you can use with any drive from OWC.
    Use third-party software such as Macs Fan Control to control the fan speeds.

    hello everyone
    recently my imac 24" mid 2007 320gb 2gb ram mac hard drive completely failed i have tried everything it starts up sometimes then freezes other times it doesnt even recognise the hard drive so i am currently using it through a boot on a external hard drive my question is if i were to replace the hard drive myself (using youtube videos i am quite tech minded so looks fairly easy) would i have to get a certain type of hard drive i know its 3.5" but is there a simple to the size 1tb/2tb and als oi have read the transfer rate may need to be tapered down is that true and if so how would i go about doing it ?

    http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2003/05/01/sata_hard_drive_with_a_kick/raptor-3.j pg shows an image of a hard drive with a jumper.   Reading from right to left, the first four prongs are power prongs.  Next you'll see a white plastic item covering two pins (that's known as a jumper).  On some SATA drives, they cover the prongs circled in red on this image:

    Either style of pinout on SATA drive, if you don't have the jumpers covered by the right plastic item, it will not work backward compatible, or will confuse the computer as to what speed it actually is.  This is why you need to ask Western Digital if any jumper needs to be on the jumper pins of the drive in question to work as the master drive on your computer given your computer's data bandwidth for hard drives.

    I need to replace my HDD in my iMac G5. (Pre-iSight) Can anyone recommend a drive and a reputable seller? (OWC, Newegg, etc..) I want to make sure I get the correct drive as well. 100GB and above will do fine.

    [macsales.com] or [newegg.com] or [smalldog.com] are all reputable vendors. You need a 3½" SATA drive and you can put in as large a one as you can afford. Just make sure to have an external the same size to make frequent backups to.

  • Replacing iMac SuperDrive

    My iMac G4 SuperDrive has been not been working for over a month now and it seems Apple have nothing to say on the subject, despite all the posts (see CDs/DVDs Not Reading At All http://discussions.info.apple.com/.689df994/103 - I'm in there somewhere!). My iMac is half-useless without its optical drive, so I'm going to have to get a new one. I don't really want the hassle of installing an internal one, so I've been looking at external drives. LaCie has a 16X dual layer FireWire burner (designed by FA Porsche, apparently) on the Irish online Apple Store for €129 (about $160). It's not a d2, BTW. It seems to do everything I want it to, but I can't find any reviews of it. Anybody know anything about it? Or know of a better/cheaper one?

    My internal drive quit working also I bought a plextor 716 to replace it. But when I had the old drive out I opened it and the laser was coated with a film!!! So I cleaned the lense with the cloth I use for glasses. Put the drive back together. and then put the system back together for the heck of it. WORKS not I have the internal and the plextor in a external firewire case and both work great.
    So the moral of the story try cleaning the lense. (yes a used a cd/dvd cleaner all the time but over time there was still a build up that couldn't be cleaned off)

    I am new on here so sorry if I get this wrong... I am replacing the hard drive on my 24inch iMac, 2008 model. I have checked out the instructions on ifixit and all that seems ok. I have purchased a passport from Apple and partitioned it as suggested and I now have a complete back up in one partition and Maverick on the other. The bit I would appreciate help with is after I put everything back together what steps do I then take to get me up and running. Any help would be appreciated, many thanks

    After the new drive is installed, boot up from the external drive, start and hold the option key and then choose the Mavericks partition on the external drive.  Then from Finder, Applications, Utilities, choose Disk Utility, select the new internal drive from the left sidebar, then in the main window, select Partition.  Keep it at one partition, name that partition, such as Macintosh HD, keep the format as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the default partition table GUID.  Apply and let DU format for you.  Quit DU when finished.
    Then either Restore the external to the new drive, or if you used a clone program like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make your Mavericks install, clone that back to the internal so you have a bootable drive.  You can either copy back your other content or reboot holding the Option key, select the internal and finishe booting up.
    Go to System Preferences, Startup Disk and make the internal drive the default startup so you always boot from there.

  • Replaced iMac G5 hard drive - now nothing works except the fan :(

    I have an iMac G5 ALS with the original 160 gb internal drive. I researched and printed the apple instructions for replacing the hard drive, copied all of my important files onto an external and then sat down to replace the drive. I followed the instructions step by step, doing well except that the temperature cable connector broke. So I did more research and many posts said that it didn't need to be connected to operate. I closed everything back up and hit the power button. All I got was the power light and fan noises, followed by increased fan speed after a minute or less. I could hear the hard drive spin briefly soon after I hit the power button.
    Startup from the install disc you all will tell me. Well, I would if the disc drive would inject the disc.
    So, now I've spent my whole afternoon trying different scenarios to troubleshoot. I've gotten nowhere. I tried reattaching the temperature cable wire by wire, no luck (of course there are four of them and they are loose, so which goes where I don't really know. I tried keeping them in the same order in which they leave the other connector). Nothing.
    Okay, so if I put the original hard drive back in it must work until I get this figured out...nope. Now that I have the original hard drive replaced into the iMac I get the power light and fan noises, no sound, no screen. Same as with the unformatted new drive.
    I was careful to connect everything back and I am really surprised in myself that I cannot make it work. The only thing that is truly different is the temperature cable, and I've read enough that says it should still start up.
    Please help me if you have any ideas.

  • Replacing iMac Hard Drive

    My existing hard drive is nearing its maximum capacity, and I want to replace it with a newer, larger hard drive. I have a 450MHz Indigo iMac G3 running OS X Tiger. In all other respects, the system is working beautifully. Anyone have suggestions for a compatible HD that I should buy? The larger the drive the better - I have quite a lot of photos and music to load into the new drive from an external HD as well as my current.
    As a second question, what's the best way of going about making this transition? What are the steps involved?

    The iMac G3 takes any old standard desktop hard drive however you should get a 3.5", 7,200 rpm drive with at least an 8Mb Cache - this will give you a significant speed boost over the original drive. 
    As already stated you can install up to a 128Gb drive. This is due to the addressing limit on the IDE bus. You can install a larger drive but only the first 128Gb will be accessible. So it's sensible to buy a 120Gb drive to maximize your investment.
    You should also purchase an external Firewire hard disk enclosure. Once you've removed the small internal hard drive you'll screw it in to this and then connect it to your FW port and 'clone' your data across using Carbon Copy Cloner. You can then use the old drive as a back-up device.
    Alternatively to avoid that hassle and the risks involved with opening the iMac up just buy an External Firewire Hard drive (There are no limits on the size so you could buy a 1.5 Tetrabyte(!) drive to use). Of course this option involves additional cables and power cables. Any new external drive will be far faster than the internal (if connected via FW not USB) and you can install Mac OS on the external if you wish. Check with the Vendor that the external drive or enclosure has an Oxford or bootable chipset.

    I had an issue with my iMac that could only be resolved by replacing the unit. I used the Migration Assistant to transfer the data then tried to access my Time Capsule to use Time Machine. I keep getting the error,"The Backup Disk Image Cannot Be Created". It recognizes the Time Capsule, but cannot create the backup image. I cannot use the other solution, with the Ctrl-Click...Browse Other Time Machines, as it does not see another time Machine. It recognizes the Time Capsule, but cannot create the disk image.

    For backups on a Time Capsule, you may have to mount the sparsebundle first.
    Open Finder. Click on Time Capsule -> Time Capsule Disk -> yourbackup.sparsebundle. Double-click on it and press Skip when prompted. Your sparsebundle should now be mounted on your Desktop.
    Try to +Browse Other Time Machine disks+ via the ctrl-click on the TM icon.

    Go to > Support > Find an AASP > click the Service Box > enter your Zip code and call some of those AASP's to see which one's do that type of upgrade.

    Hello. Can anyone (in the UK) tell me about how much it would cost to replace the motherboard on a 20-inch Intel iMac? Mine is slowly dying (details below), in particular with graphics problems. Thanks.
    More or less from the outset, my 20-inch iMac had an intermittent fault where occasionally it would start or wake up with major graphics problems (see http://tinyurl.com/iMacFault1). As I'd bought it from an Apple retail store, the only thing they would accept is for me to bring it back to the store (difficult, in my case) and have them examine it. I've been there before: I'd go to the trouble of bringing it back, they'd test it, it wouldn't fail, they'd say there was nothing wrong etc. They weren't interested in the photographs of the fault. So, I let it go.
    Of late, it's more often suffered from a slight shimmering with video (which you can often clear by powering down and up) and/or rows of corrupted pixels in windows (see http://tinyurl.com/iMacFault2). Very recently, it's started to freeze completely.

    The cost is prohibitive to the point you would be better off getting a new machine and selling the old one on eBay for parts. I don't recall the exact amount, but a new logic board for my 17" iMac was somewhere in the $650 range (~409 £). Apple should be able to quote you a price for the replacement to give you an exact idea.
    If it is still under warranty and freezing consistently, go back to the store. iMacs aren't cheap to replace so you may try insisting they take a harder look at it. Best of luck!
