Replacement layers in motion

I'll try to explain this in easy terms. I open a template in motion and it has 4 different "Replace .jpg" layers where I can add my own photos? If the "Replace 1.jpg" is 720x486 in pixel size, and the photo I want to put on it is 1111x831 in pixel size, can I reposition it to show the part of the photo I want to see? ,OR Do I have to resize my original picture to 720x486 in photoshop to make it work.? I cannot figure out a way to repostion it? It would seem that if the pixel size of what you are putting on a "replace 1.jpg" layer, is bigger, you could scale it to fit or move it around to show what you want? Am I missing something?

I found it, you have to adjust the fixed width and hieght in the inspector. Playing with the crop also helps.

  • How do I import a pdf file with layers into Motion 5?

In earlier version of Motion, you could import a pdf file with all layers or even select layers you wanted to import. You did this by dragging the pdf file into the project and holding it until a popup appeard providing you choices for how you wanted to complete the import. In Motion 5.0.1 however, no such popup appears and it imports the file as a flat image file. Any ideas how to change this pelase?
    Thanks
    Greg

Thanks Ben & Praveen. In FCP7 It was possible to import PDF files and as you did the import, make choices regarding layers you wished to import. FCPX appears to import PDFs but only as flattened files. I'll try keeping the file in PSD format and importing as you recommend.

  • PSD-layered - copy and paste properties to layers in Motion?

    Hi,
I imported a layered photoshop file into Motion.
I applied certain properties to one layer (with key frames, such as rotate, scale, shadow...) and I want to know if there is a way to copy those properties and paste them onto the other layers so I can then go in and do certain tweaks, without having to do each layer from scratch...
(This is something that you can do in FinalCut, copy and past attributes, but I can't seem to find that option in Motion.)
    Thanks

you can do this by selecting the layers with the properties you want, then in the inspector, drag and drop the parameters onto the the layer you want them applied to.

  • I need a script to replace layers. PS CS5

Ok, let's say I need to replace layer (x) with layer (y), of course, Layer (y) is not in the composition.
(NOTE: layer (y) is a Vector Smart Layer while layer (x) is a regular layer named "Layer 4")
And yes each Layer (x) is named "Layer 4"
The Problem is ... There are 59 of layer (x) in the composition, and I need to replace each and everyone with layer (y)!
I would do it manually although it's time consuming, but there's also the problem that the PC slows down as I open the composition because it is 732MB and 900+ Layers, So I figured out the best way to do it is with a script, But unfortunately I have no idea how to type a script and when I googled it, I found 1 Script that can do so but it did not really work!

Scripting is programming requires knowledge there is a Photoshop Scripting forum you can ask for help with your found script. They user there may help you modify it to work the way you want it to work if the script was not save in binary. However without some programming knowledge it may be a hard thing for you to do.

  • Replace layered photoshop file?

I have a large photoshop file (about 40 layers) that i'd like to replace with another photoshop layered file (which contains the exact # of layers with the same naming convention, although each has a different image).
Currently the only way of replacing a layered file is to select each individual layer and  search for that layer in another file.
    How  can this be done?
    Thanks
    Jeff

...the way you are already doing it. Sorry, there is no automated way to do this. AE doesn't care for a PSDs internal structure once the layers have been imported. to the program it's al ljust footage. that's good on most days as it prevents misconduct with screwy PSD files, bad on days when you need to replace things. Since the layers are named identically, a script might be of help. Perhaps something along those lines is floating around on AEnhancers or AEScripts...
    Mylenium
    Wait, what?
That's exactly how after effects deals with photoshop files, it looks for file name then layer name, it does not arbitrarily convert it to some new footage type.  As long as the shell of the photoshop file is the same (filename, number of layers, and layer names), then the AEP, placed in the directory relative to the PSD will update with WHATEVER those current images are.
Sorry to disagree here, Mylenium, and you obviously have a lot of posts and have likely helped many many people, but I think this response is just plain wrong.  I even went so far as to triple check doing a quick test, and the AEP/PSD combination behaved as i expected it to.  And you would get misconduct from messing with the PSD.  Try changing a layer name in photoshop and saving it, then opening you AEP and see what happens (the dreaded color bars).
As for your problem, Jeff, since you can't just copy and replace the old file due to the need to keep it plus the new one, your best bet is to import the PSD as a comp, and then alt+drag the individual layers from the project palette to the selected layers that need replacing.  This will keep all of your keyframes and whatnot.
    OR
Maybe you create two separate directories, one with the old and one with the new PSD, and set two separate AEP's up the way you want them, then combine those directories and import one of the AEP's into the other (I love the fact that you can import an AEP into an AEP...has saved my butt MANY times).  That might be the ticket right there.
    I hope maybe that helps

  • Transparent psd layers in Motion 5

    Hello,
I'm trying to import psd-files into Motion 5. As I see in the layer list (sorry I only know Motion 5 in German), it works. I also see the small pictures in the files preview on the left.  Strangely I don't see them in the canvas. I see the borderlines around the objects, but every pixels of all the layers seem to be transparent. It doesn't matter if I import all the layers or reduce them to one - they are invisible. Other image types can be displayed correctly, but not psd.
Can you tell me what's the problem here?
    Thanks for your help

usually I use RGB, but this time I used a fellow's files and I forgot to check that. Guess I will never forget that again Thanks for your help!

  • Replacing a Traditional Motion Control Card with a Small PC with Softmotion

    Hi,
I'm totally new to Softmotion. So my questions might be very naive.
Anyway, we are currently using a Deltatau motion controller with three motor drives. The drives are all linear type and the motion controller provides the commutation. The motion controller is kind of expensive, a few $k. So I'm thinking, if it is possible to use a small embedded PC for a few $$$ and load it with the Softmotion software and control the drives.
    So a few questions:
    1) Can the Softmotion perform decoding if I connect the A/B encoder signal to the digital I/O of the embedded PC?
    2) Can the Softmotion perform commutation and output the A/B signals with DAC?
    3) I assume connecting the limit switches to the I/O should be no problem for the Softmotion to pickup.
    4) What is the cost of the Softmotion per copy?
Anyway, those are my questions today. Is there anybody who might have done it this wya before?
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Hi Jay,
Take a look at this tutorial for acquiring a basic knowledge of what the software can do, but more important, what hardware setup you need to do this tasks.
There are several approaches (CompactRIO, PCI, PXI) but fundamentally NI handles 3 types of signals (CCW, CW which are Direction & step. Plus a drive enable) that we use for controlling motor drives. If your drive accepts these signals we could say you could potentially use NI products to interface with it.
I encourage you to talk to one of our local sales engineers for more information.

  • How can a graphic be replaced in a Motion template and retain the behaviors of the graphic?

I'd like to replace a graphic with another graphic in a template while retaining all the behaviors.  Possible?

Yes, it's easy. You just drag. But you must pay attention to the cursor, it will turn into different things depending on where you try to drop your replacement.
Check the online help system, just search for REPLACE and then look for REPLACE LAYER CONTENTS.

  • Deleting and replacing layers

So I'm trying to create a fairly simple script that will measure the size of art on the artboard for making printing plates. That part I have working. But once I have made one file, I have to delete the measurements layer manually (which is where the script puts them) so that I can make the next one. I need the script to check and see if there is a layer called "measurements" delete it and then create a new one called "measurements" in which to put the dimensions of the (new) artwork. This way I can keep making files and "saving as" with a new name.

    here's a sample
    var idoc = app.activeDocument;
// try removing the layer, regardless whether it exists or not
    try {
var ilayer = idoc.layers["measurements"]; // if it does not exist, it will error out....
        ilayer.remove();
    } catch(e) { } // ....and continue here, doing nothing
    // add a new layer
    var ilayer = idoc.layers.add();
    ilayer.name = "measurements";

  • How to make a cycle for some layers in Motion 5 timeline?

I've just started to study animation in Motin 5...
Maybe somebody knows how to select some frames and make them repeating several times?

The animation group has to be trimmed to the length of the animation. The clone will automatically be exactly that length when created. In the Inspector > Timing, you need to set the End Condition (2nd parameter from the bottom) to Loop then retime (stretch) the clone layer to as long as you need in the project timeline.  You need to set it in that order: set timing to loop, then stretch the time length of the clone (you should see "notches" in the timeline under the canvas marking the cycle length.) You can't do it the other way around (stretch clone then retime) [well, you can, but it's a lot more work to fix it afterwards.]
If the length of the animation is the entire project length, then you can use a clone to speed it up and loop by also changing the speed to greater than 100% (multiples of 100 recommended), setting the end condition to loop and dragging out the length of the clone in the timeline.
It is very much worth the effort to learn how to use clones... They can be so useful for so many things. For instance, you can create an emitter that "explodes", clone it, then use the timing to reverse it so it *implodes*, etc...  Clones can also behave as an "inline" image sequence which can be emitted or replicated and have random frames taken out of the sequence -- or to play the animation for each instance of the emitted or replicated source...   And this one even boggles my mind a little: clone frames can exist anywhere in time, even before the animation is actually executed in the project.  ... and the list goes on...

  • Replacing Imported Layered Photoshop Files

From the file browser (or the Media Tab) in Motion (2.0.1) you can easily replace an object in a layer by dragging and dropping a new file onto that object. This is handy if you modified an image but want to apply the same animation to it. So here's my question:
I have an imported layered photoshop logo in my project and I want to replace some of those layers with a modified version of that logo (the animation is staying the same so I'm trying to avoid copying and pasting hundreds of keyframes to my altered layers). How can I replace the individual layers?
I tried importing a single layer from the new PS file as a test but in the Media Tab, Motion still references the entire photoshop file so when I try to replace the corrosponding layer it just inserts the entire flattened PS file.
    What say you?

    hi,
    welcome to the forums.
i have found that if i update the photoshop file then the imported layers in Motion update as well. Are you not seeing this?
Could you not save the layer out of the photoshop file as a separate file and import that?

  • Imported Photoshop Layers change in Motion after re-saving PSD file

Curious if anyone has seen this issue:
I have a multi-layered Photoshop CS drawing that I import (All Layers) into Motion to animate. No problem.
If I make a change to the original Photoshop PSD file, the Motion layers are updated incorrectly. The layers are swapped and their locations move. The only fix I have is to completely re-import the file and start from scratch.
I've also seen the Motion layers change slightly if I just save the PSD file again without changes. They are minor, but still apparent.
    Anyone, anyone?
    Dual 2GHz G5 : 3GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   FCP5

Lesson learned. Do you know, is the a problem only if PS and Motion are open at the same time?
I like the fact that Motion attempts to update, but the fact it does it wrong is a bummer. I suppose if this only happens when the two programs are open one could simply close motion, change one or two layers in photoshop, and import only those layer into Motion upon re-opening. Not a big deal.
I may try and see what happens... with a small project without a deadline...

  • Import layered ai files into motion and problem  when export to psd

has anyone found a way to import  rapidly ai files layered into motion?
I tryed to export from ai a psd file in layers but i am allowed to do it only in cmyk, and result is weird, all color changed. any help please?

Converting vector layer to shape when the vector layer contains a gradient is not supported. Gradients will come in as a gray fill. If you have more than one fill on a layer you will get both fills but you will loose the blend modes or any opacity masks on the fill. Basically you're stuck with solid color fills and solid color paths when you use Shape to Vector Layer.
Also, each illustrator path you want to turn into a shape must be on a separate layer. Multiple shapes on in the same layer will come in as a shape layer but the paths and fills will not be correct. AE will do it's best to figure out what you want but the chances for multiple paths filled with different colors in the same layer to be converted correctly is remote.
You can, however, add and modify as many gradient fills as you like to a shape layer in AE.

  • Problem with "Noise dissolve" filter Motion 1.0.1/ psd transparency

    Hello,
sorry for my english but i'm writing from france...
So, this is my problem. If you want, try the same thing and you will see something ugly :
this is an example (not real files that i'm working on) :
I import a photoshop file with two layers in Motion. Layer 1 is just a pink color. Layer 2 is a copy of small portion of Layer 1 ( so it's the same color : pink ). I make this copy with a progressive border/selection of 2px (soft edge of 2px).
In motion layer 1 is under layer 2. Of course layer 2 have a transparency, because it's just a copy of small portion of layer 1.
When you look at the image, you just see pink color ( in fact there's two layer of the same color ). This is before applying the "noise dissolve" filter.
I apply the "noise dissolve" filter on layer 2 to make this layer appear in 300 frames. At frame 0 layer 2 is hidden by effect, at frame 300 the effect reveal the layer 2 with animated pixels (this is the "noise dissolve" effect). Of course, once again you don't see layer 2 appear because it's the same color than layer 1.
    BUT...
when layer 2 "appear", i can see a black (and ugly) border around the layer 2!
It seems that Motion make a soft border around a transparency object !
Maybe i don't understand something ? I try to change the settings of the alpha channel in the inspector when i'm selecting my imported image, but it doesn't change anything!
I try to make a progressive border/selection/soft edge of 0px ( it's like a hard edge i think ) on the layer 2 in photoshop. In Motion, it's better but i can see the black and ugly border again ( not so visible, but visible anyway).
Here is a capture of what i see with the effect applied (On left you have hard edge, on right soft edge.):
    http://perso.wanadoo.fr/elzef/motion.jpg
I hope you understand what i mean...
Somebody know about this problem ?
    Thank you

    G4 MDD Dual 867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   and 9.2.2

    Hi Patrick,
    thank you,
    i set layer 2's alpha to pre-multiplied:
at the begining it's seems to be OK,
but at the middle of the effect the noise appears as white pixels, then disappear when come to the end.
At the end the soft border is not visible ( that's waht i want for the end) but the hard edge still visible - not so visible whan it was black, but still here.
I try to set layer2 alpha to "behind". It seems to work with the soft edge but don't work with the hard edge.
I will try again with the images of my real project and try to not use hard edge, maybe it's gonna work.
    Thank you very much
