Replacement Macbook Pro HDD

Can anyone tell me if this HDD will fit into my Macbook Pro 17"?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Scorpio-WD2500BEVS-internal/dp/B000VNCEP A
If it's compatible, performant and even the largest I can get?
I'm happy with opening it up and fitting the replacement drive as I'll do that when Leopard comes out as I'd be doing a new install anyway.
It's only a 5400prm disc, but would this be such an issue? It is a SATA interface drive, which I understand the MB uses. The reason I'm thinking about it is because I'm desperately running out of space on my HDD. I travel a lot, and use Aperture, so my library is quite large. I also have a lot of audio/video content on there, so really need a larger drive.

but it means lugging them around wherever I go
I too find that even a portable 2.5" version external drive a pain especially when you consider there's a perfectly acceptable internal solution. Having just upgraded to a Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive I can tell you the extra space is a great help. However, as Ricktotronto mentioned it can affect your warranty so it's something to take into consideration.
Yes the Western Digital Scorpio 250GB drive fits. You might contact WD though as from what I know, the anti-shock technology that they use in their Scorpio drives interferes with Apple Sudden Motion Sensor (they basically do the same thing) which can cause crashing. Some have said this is not an issue although I'd confirm this directly with WD.
Additionally, the drive check, while not particularly difficult can be rather "fiddly" so unless you are reasonably mechanically dextrous you can easily dmage something on just opening up your MBP. You will also need the right tools, like a torx 6 screwdriver, as the wrong ones will damage the screws.

  • Replacing/Upgrading the 15" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro HDD?

I was wondering if it is possible to replace the 15" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro HDD from a 5400 RPM to a 7200 RPM. I plan on recording using Logic Pro so I will most likely need a faster hard drive. If so, what are some good, compatible hard drives to look into.

As asked here perhaps 1000 times a day, and findable
with a simple search you can, but you can void your
warranty if you don't do it right and there is some
work involved. Spare the grief and get an external
drive with a fast 2.5" drive in it and add to your
capacity the entire value vs. the difference.
It is very tiring to see you respond to everyone who asks this question with "get an external drive". I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who want more storage WITHOUT having to tote extra gear around.
Yes external drives are useful, but they don't answer the question asked.

  • Transferring data from external hard drive to new replacement Macbook Pro...

    Hello,
Apple have arranged to give me a replacement Macbook Pro due to faults with hardware on the one I am currently using. I will be going to pick up the replacement Macbook Pro tomorrow morning.
As a complete novice I just wanted to check that I have backed up the data from my current laptop onto my Iomega external hard drive properly, as I am slightly nervous about losing all my work and not being able to transfer all my files onto my new Macbook Pro tomorrow.
I did a back up using time machine earlier today which took quite a long time and seemed to go successfully. Is this the right thing to have done to save all data from my current laptop onto the external hard drive?
Will transferring data from the external hard drive onto my new Macbook Pro be a simple task?
Will I have to reinstall all my software such as Logic and Pro Tools? Also will my preferences and settings for music software be changed?
    I'd greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Deena

    Well it's like this.
If your problem on the Mac didn't affect the software or the TimeMachine backup, then restoring from that using SetupAssistant (when you first set up a new Mac it will ask you to restore) should go fine.
HOWEVER, if there are software issues on the Mac that also transferred to the TimeMachine drive, that will only transfer them back onto your new computer.
You can't very easily just pick out the things you want to restore from TimeMachine with, it doesn't give that fine detail of control, and if it's really messed up, it might not restore anything at all.
The golden rule of backups is to maintain two separate and easily accessible hardware copies of your data off the machine at all times.
Since you don't know for sure if the TimeMachine restore is going to work as intended, and your only other source is going to disappear, I'd advise a additional backup of your Music, Documents, Pictures and Movie folders etc., to another regular external drive via regular drag and drop copy methods.
The operating system and programs can all be reinstalled from fresh sources on the new machine, provided you have the AppleID and password, license codes for your programs, email passwords and any other necessary information to re-establish the license on the new machine.
(In some cases licensed software HAS NOT transferred to a new machine with a TimeMachine restore and had to be reinstalled)
Some times you have to contact the developer or "uninstall" the licensed program so it sends a signal to their servers that the program has been removed, else your license code may not work on the new machine.
You might decide the new machine would be better off with a fresh install of your programs that you know are 100% compatible with Lion etc., leaving a lot of older stuff you installed over the years off the new machine, if you restore from TimeMachine, you don't have this option. You pretty much get all the crap along for the ride,
If your new machine gets all crapped up, then restoring Lion is going to going to be a tough challenge, as you need a strong reliable Internet connection to download a fresh copy of Lion from Apple servers (no more disks). Once you do that, then somehow you have to use third party software ($$) to cherry pick your files out of TimeMachines trap. More headaches than you anticpated, and likely a charge by a specialist.
So I'd advise another hard drive with a copy of just your files, just in case a crap-up occurs
You can restore Lion yourself if it craps up, install programs from fresh sources as you know how to do, use the old license codes and then return your files manually exactly back into their same Music, Pictures, Documents, and Movies (etc, not Library) folders as before.
The key to this manual method is to make sure to use the same user name as before, so all your file location data pathnames retained by program files like iTunes to where the songs are located on the drive, are matched. Once you open these programs and restablish the links in OS X, then you can move them around.
Some tricks, if you use iPhoto, you can right click "show package contents" and inside is a folder with your Originals, copy that out and you can reimport your pictures into the new iPhoto Library on the new machine.
So use TM if you dare, but prepared to do things manually is my opinion.
TM restores have not been all that reliable or dependable, the more messed up your machine is, the worst the restore seems to be.
    Good Luck

  • Do i have to charge my replacement macbook pro batter for a certain amount of time before using the computer?

do i have to charge my replacement macbook pro batter for a certain amount of time before using the computer?

First, if you have a Late 2008 or older MacBook Pro, you should calibrate the battery, as the battery for these MacBooks don't come precalibrated > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Then, the battery should come charged, so use it until the battery percentage is low, and then, charge it. You can use your Mac while your battery is being charged, and your MacBook will stop charging the battery when your battery is full, so you can unplug it at any moment

  • Old macbook pro hdd cannot read by new iMac?

hi, i just bought an iMac, my old macbook pro hdd i took it out and put it in a external hdd case but when i plug the usb to the imac it wont detect anything? i need to transfer my files over to the imac as my macbook pro just die on me after so many year. any advise?

Oh. You don't really know if the drive is ok?
It is quite possible the drive was corrupted when the mother board was acting up. So, in terms of diagnostics you need to verify the enclosure works and whether the drive is still viable.
Do you have access to another Mac?
How about asking the computer store folk to connect the external drive - enclosure with the drive installed - to one of their computers? Is that possible?

  • "No bootable disk" when installing Windows 7 on Macbook Pro (HDD caddy)

    Here's the deal.
    I have a 2011 Macbook Pro (8,1) that I bought a HDD caddy for.  It's beautiful.
I replaced the superdrive with a 1tb hard drive and it's wonderful.  I want to install Windows 7 via bootcamp on it.  I go through the steps (create install usb, download extra files, partition the drive) and once it restarts I get the following error:
I press keys, reinsert the usb stick repeatably, and finally hold down the power button to restart.  After holding down option to bring up the boot menu, this is what I get:
Where did my other disks go?!  I boot normally and check Disk Utility and, look at that, there they all are!
I've gone through variations of this for 3 days now.  Please help!

I recently ran into a very similar issue. Windows, or at least Boot Camp, will not boot into an HDD that is installed in the optical drive bay. I do not know why this is, or if there is a way to fix it; all I know is that as soon as I moved my HDD back to the HDD bay, Windows started booting again.
Boot camp has many issues with MacBooks whose optical drives have been replaced, which are well-documented on the web. This article (and its comments) describe many of them, and the workarounds that people have found for them. That said, I think that Boot Camp has improved with Mountain Lion (or possibly with the continued proliferation of optical drive-less machines from Apple), because I was able to boot the Windows installer just fine from the optical drive that I had removed and placed in an external USB enclosure. (Not that it did me any good - I received the dreaded error 0x8030024 when I tried to actually install Windows.)
What worked for me was to install Boot Camp before removing my optical drive, use WinClone to make a copy of that installation, and then clone the image back to the drive once I'd gotten my drives in place.
    So, in summary:
Try putting Boot Camp on the drive that's in your HDD bay.
The article I linked describes many of the issues you might run into and provides workarounds for them.
Worst case, you may have to reinstall the optical drive in order to install boot camp, then use WinClone to move the installation to any drive you wish. (Hang onto this image for all future Boot Camp installations.)

  • Apple Genius Bar, fried MacBook Pro HDD?

    Hello,
Think my MacBook Pro's HDD has died. It's a replacement I installed myself - does this mean a Genius won't diagnose the problem for me?
I am happy to replace the HDD again, but just wanted to me sure it was th HDD before paying for another.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    I expect so.
just wanted to me sure it was th HDD before paying for another.
    (a) Re-install the original one. Test it thoroughly for a couple of days. If it works as per specs, then the replacement drive is the problem. If it comes up with problems, then the problem might be somewhere else (the SATA cable is sometimes the culprit). If the MBP under warranty, take it to Apple Store or AASP for a check.
    (b) Install the problem HDD in another computer or in an ext'l enclosure. Test thoroughly. If no problem, then the problem must be with the MBP. See (a).

  • Clicking, beeping, and failing of 13" MacBook Pro HDD

    I have a 13" MacBook Pro that uses a 250GB Hitachi HDD (model: HTS545025B9SA02, revision: PB2AC60Q).
For the past month or so, I have started "docking" the laptop. That is, I use external keyboardmousedisplay and close the lid of of the MBP. That is when I notice the occasional clicking (I believe it's because the head is parked, similar sound to when you pick up the laptop too fast. But this noise happens with zero vibration in the environment) and beeping. At first, it did not bother me much but it happened more frequently. At one point, I was transferring file from the laptop to a networked machine and the laptop made louder "reading" noise (my drive is under 40% used).
Given these events, I downloaded the S.M.A.R.T util from Apple and it says it is "FAILING." Is this a good enough justification to take it to the store and ask for replacement (under warranty now)?
One more significant observation is that when I use the external display AND the laptop display, the clicking (head parking) noise seems to disappear. It seems the firmware is not ready to operate the computer when lid is closed but connected to external display?
Thanks in advance and I hope this is not too much rambling.

Yes. If SMART says it’s failing, it is failing.

  • MacBook Pro HDD and logic board connection

Hi! Recently my 1.5 year old MacBook Pro hanged while I was watching a movie. So I had to force shutdown the machine. On restarting, I was routed to "System Utilities" and I observed that there was some issue with the hard drive. I could not repair the hard drive myself with the disk utilities system. And therefore,I took it to the Apple service center wherein on preliminary diagnosis they said that hard drive is gone. A day later they say that the connection between the hard drive and the logic board is gone and so I need to replace the hard drive and the logic board as well (cost of which is equivalent to a new non-apple notebook). I read several discussions on "apple forums" and learnt that there is a cable connection between the hard drive and the logic board. But the service guy says that there is some other "socket connection" which is gone while the cable is all fine. I am not able to understand if there are two types of connection between the hdd and the logic board. I have not come across similar problem with anyone and somehow I feel that this service guy cannot help Me. I also fail to understand that how can one access the disk utility system if the logic board (or the heart of the laptop) is gone!!!!! The notebook was always very carefully handled with no jerk and or spillage issue. It has always worked perfectly fine with the software updated to the latest available. Please help!!

    @diti wrote:
Earlier I could atleast detect the HDD, now the service guys say that they cant detect the hdd. They replaced the hd with a new one but even that is not getting detected. So they r saying that the connection between logic board and hdd is not fine.
To test if it is the connection, one can connect a known functional boot drive externally via USB and if it boots the MBP, then there is an internal connection problem.  There are differences in how the SSD is mounted in a retina MBP.  Look at these videos:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_retinadisplay_late12_unibo dy_ssd_l/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_15_retinadisplay_mid12_unibod y_ssd_l/
If you have the 13" MBP, it indicates that the mounting and connection assembly may have to be replaced.  If it is a 15" MBP, it indicates that the logic board may have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Advice appreciated on a MacBook pro HDD issue

    Hello,
I've just suffered my first real system problem and even though I have a few ideas for how to fix it I thought I'd post here and ask for some advice to see what you guys think.
First the problem... Basically my MacBook Pro's HDD has an issue and won't boot. I don't think it's a physical problem with the hardware (although I'm open to advice on this too), I think it just needs a reformat and fresh install of the OS. But obviously I need to get my files off of there first and this is the problem, but read on for more details.
So that's the problem in a nutshell, but here's the full detail.
It's a MacBook Pro, late 2011, 17", 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM, bought in Miami September 2011 while I was on holiday there (I live in the UK), came with Snow Leopard installed, was upgraded to Lion a few days after purchase and then upgraded to Mountain Lion about a month ago.
Last week I was using it when it suddenly restarted itself. I let it restart, then began using it again and about five minutes later it restarted again, but this time it didn't boot properly.
It stayed on the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning clock-type wheel. There was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen, it took ages to move, then finally got to about 33% and the machine restarted itself again.
I tried lots of restarts but every time it did the same thing or it never even showed the progress bar, and just had the spinning clockwheel forever.
So I held down alt and booted from Mountain Lion's recovery partition instead. I launched Disk Utility and tried to verify / repair the drive but it came back with errors and said that it couldn't fix them. Apologies, I realise typing this that anyone reading would probably quite like to read the error long but I can't remember it and I'm not currently at home. If needed I'll run it again and post.
Anyway, the basic point is that Disk Utility is giving a message saying to copy all my files off the drive and reformat because it can't fix it. Incidentally the SMART status of the drive is fine / normal. Not showing any problems there, which is why I'm hopeful it's not a hadware issue.
So I need to copy my files off, and this is the real reason I'm posting this thread, because I don't mind doing a reformat / fresh install of Mountain Lion, but my last backup is a couple of months old (I know, naughty me) so while it wouldn't be the end of the world to copy files back from that, I would lose a bit of data so would like to get them off the MBP's HDD now.
At this point, let me list the kit I have at my disposal:
    - At home I have the aforementioned patient (MacBook Pro), a 2TB external HDD with USB2 / FireWire 800 and a NAS box that sits on my network. I also have one of those cables that lets you connect an internal HDD via USB (more on this later, as I suspect it's going to be my best hope).
    - At work I have a Windows 7 PC which I do not have any admin rights to, A Windows XP PC that I do have admin rights to and an iMac that is running Leopard (10.5.8) and cannot be upgraded due to various boring work reasons I won't go into here.
So the first thing I tried was booting into the recovery partition, launching Disk Utility and trying to clone the HDD over to the external 2TB drive I have. Cloning the drive like-for-like gives an error message (again apologies, I can't remember it) and trying to copy to an image file on the external drive gets all the way to the end (takes ages because Disk Utility keeps going to sleep) but then when I try to mount the image it gives an error and fails, so I don't trust this method.
So booting to recovery and using Disk Utility seems to be no good.
I thought about trying to take the MBP to work and launching it in target disk mode, then copying files, however I read that you can only have one FireWire device (the target computer) connected when doing this and my iMac at work doesn't have enough internal HDD space to copy all my MBP's files off, so I would need to have an external drive connected to the iMac in addition to the MBP, which sounds like it's not a good idea, or not supported by Apple anyway.
I thought about making a bootable Mountain Lion USB stick as I have a 16GB USB stick I could use for this, however I don't know how to make the bootable USB using my iMac as it's on Leopard (can't be upgraded for work reasons) and doesn't even have the Mac App store on it for me to re-download the Mountain Lion install file.
I think I have the Snow Leopard DVD that came with my MBP so could probably boot off this, but does that allow me into Finder or anything that would let me copy docs from my internal HDD properly over to the external drive? Or is it just going to look similar to the Mountain Lion recovery partition, with Disk Utility and a few other options?
I don't know whether the Mountain Lion recovery partition lets me install Mountain Lion onto my external drive? Or a USB? I was a bit scared to start clicking through options to see whether it would ask me which drive I wanted to install to, just in case it doesn't and begins erasing the main HDD as one of the first things it does.
So this leaves the cable that allows me to connect internal drives via USB. This cable has saved my bacon in the past and I suspect it may be my best option once more. Obviously this means I'm going to have to open up the MBP and remove the HDD but I installed the extra RAM myself and I've installed full-size (3.5") HDDs in the past so I should be able to handle that, unless there's anything radically different with 2.5" drives I'm not aware of.
I've heard people mention DiskWarrior in the past but to be honest if I'm going to spend that sort of money I'd prefer to just put it towards an new, larger HDD, probably a 2TB model.
So there we are, thanks for reading this far. If you have any advice about another (or better) way to get my files off the MBP I'm all ears.
I've never actually done a fresh install of Mac OS before either, only upgrades downloaded from the Mac App Store so any advice around that might be handy too, but mainly it's the file copying I want help with as I'll probably just boot from the recovery partition to reformat and reinstall Mountain Lion.
    Thanks

  • Replacing MacBook Pro hard disk

Hi to all. I found on the web tutorials about replacing hard-disk on the MacBook but nothing about MacBook Pro! Is this operation very difficult or much more difficult that on the MacBook? Anyone is able to indicate me haw to do or a tutorial? I would like to replace my 80GB with a 160GB HD.
Thank you to all of you!

sorry I can't offer any direct advice. but I think the reason why it's easier and there is user info on how to swap out the drives in the macbook is because they are the first apple notebook to have a drive designed to be replaceable by the user, AFAIK. it's ironic, but the macbook pro is not designed with a user-swapabble drive, so that's prob why you're having trouble finding a guide to do it. also be aware that opening the machine voids your warranty. that said, I have heard of people that took their MBP in to a computer service place to have the drive replaced, so if you don't find out how to do it yourself, you could try taking it somewhere. btw, my grandmother came from varese..

  • Got replacement MacBook Pro from Apple and now CS2 won't work. Help!

After a long story of woe, which is too long to get into now, Apple ended up replacing my near-dead two-year old computer with a new MacBook Pro. (Yay, Apple!) They imaged my old drive, and put it on the new computer, including the applications. I transferred over my CS2 Suite, but now I'm getting Space Monkey, and my Illustrator will start loading and then shut itself down. Since I got the original CS2, I've moved and moved and moved again, and the disks are no where to be found.
Does anyone have any advice about how to get the CS2 Suite up and running again? Am I going to have to call Adobe and plead my case with them for a new install file?
Help! I have so many files that I need to access.

Your best option is to reinstall it, and if you don't have the discs you'll need to contact Adobe.
Otherwise, since CS is not an Apple product, and your issues are not with an Apple product, you should post further questions regarding CS on Adobe's own forums at: http://www.adobeforums.com

  • Replaced Macbook Pro HD now "no battery available"

Hey, all. I've searched the forums and tried everything I could find as well as taking my computer to an authorized Mac repair store and even they couldn't figure this thing out. But before I bring my computer in to the official Mac store downtown this weekend I thought I'd pick the brains of the forums and see if there was anything I hadn't tried.
Here's the story so far.  I've got an early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" that was running slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Apple Store genius recommended I max out my ram and upgrade to an SSD. I upgraded the ram and it didn't help much. So this past weekend I bought a 500gm Samsung Evo SSD from a reputable shop downtown.  The owner offered to install the SSD for me for free so I said sure! I watched him do the installation and everything went exactly how I saw it done on the videos I watched as I had originally planned it myself. He was careful, put it on an static free, soft surface, and had no issues opening the case. He walked the battery connection out and then carefully removed the hard drive and replaced it with the new one. He also put my old hard drive in a case.
When I got home and tried to turn the computer on, it wouldn't run on battery power. When I plugged it in, it started right up. Figuring it could be because I hadn't installed the OS on the new SSD I loaded Mavericks on it and all went well with the install. When plugged in the computer runs great! Starts up ten times faster and completes tasks faster as well. When I look at the Activity Monitor it's a big difference, in a positive direction. But it's still telling me "Battery Not Available."
So I called the guy a bought it off of and he was perplexed as well and he went through it again, ran a diagnostic and found nothing wrong other than that the battery appeared to have failed. Before letting him do anything else to it, I brought it to an authorized Mac specialist for a second opinion and she also ran a diagnostic and found nothing wrong other than the battery failing. So I replaced the battery and it isn't recognizing the new battery either.
Not being a computer genius I didn't know what else to do so I decided to put the computer back to its original state so to speak and reinstalled my old hard drive and original battery.  It made no difference with the battery situation. Even with everything back in its original place, it was saying "battery not available."
I reinstalled the SSD and new battery so I could at least use it as a speedier desktop.
I then went back to the forums, searching for something I could try and came across a thread suggesting to reset the SMC after some basic troubleshooting. Did the troubleshooting, didn't find anything and reset the SMC. Computer still showed "battery not available."
So I called Apple Care and the rep I talked to said I had done everything he would suggest other than taking my computer into the Apple Store.
And thus I'm here, before I have time to take it in this weekend, asking if any of you have any other ideas for me to try. If in the end it's a logic board issue that would make sense from what I've read, it just seems strange that the logic board coincidentally failed or was damaged during what appeared to be a routine install/upgrade.
Thanks for any help and hope you all are having a great night.

What was your ultimate resolution for this issue.
I have the same thing going on.

  • Replace macbook pro hard drive

I have a 15" macbook pro from mid 2010. My hard drive has crashed so I bought a ssd to replace my had drive. My problem is that I have replaced the hard drive and put in the os snow leopard software that came with my computer into my laptop. I tried to use my backing up but realized that it wont work since my computer was running os x Lion when it crashed. I am trying to start it up as a new laptop, but it wont give me that option according to apple I need some sort of program in my hard drive to do that. Does anyone know what that program is and where I can get it without going to apple?
    I don't have apple care.

Have a look at the link below to see if it applies to you.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4904
When you were running Lion in your Macbook Pro - were you the legal owner?  Meaning, did you buy it?
I could be wrong - but it should show up in your purchases when you open app store.  again, i'm second guessing on Lion since Mountain Lion shows up in my purchases.

  • Is it possible to replace Macbook Pro Retina's battery?

I have a Late 2012 macbook pro retina and after 2 years of working with it, it has a problem with battery. Yesterday it gave me a notification that the battery is in  "replace soon" condition. I would like to know if the battery replacement is possible on this model? Also i don't think we have a apple store in my country and I would like to know where can I take it, to solve this problem?

The battery in the 2012 retina MBP is difficult to replace due to it being glued in place. See the iFixit teardown here: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2012+Tear down/9462
To have the battery replaced it really needs to be done by Apple either at a store or shipped back to them. Go here to see what your options are by country:
    https://www.apple.com/support/country/
There may be local non-Apple repair shops that will do this work, but you are taking your chances with them. Good luck!
