Replacement Motherboard for Dual 1ghz MDD G4

My original motherboard for my G4 is toast.
What replacement Motherboards are compatible with my dual 1ghz
mdd G4?
The white sticker on board reads: 630T3984/630-4256
Thanks
Eric

Ouch, I was hoping it wouldn't be one of those.
I think it has to be the same. My info comes from an Apple document discussing CPU upgrades.

Before Replacing the Processor
Important:
Apple has determined a compatibility issue between the processor and certain
fabrication levels of the logic board on some Power Mac Server G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors)
and Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) products. Before ordering a replacement
processor for those models, follow these steps:
1. Open the computer and check the fabrication number that is printed on the logic
board. The fabrication number is easily visible at the edge of the board near PCI card
slot 5.
2. If the logic board fabrication number is 820-1308, 820-1440, or 820-1445, do
not
order the processor module. Instead, you must replace both the logic board and the
processor by ordering the combined module: Module Set, Logic and Processor (Apple
part number 661-3654).
Replacement Warning:
When ordering this combined module set, a returned logic
board must match one of the three fabrication numbers (820-1308, 820-1440, or 820-
1445). If the logic board does not match one of these fabrication numbers, it will be
rejected.
3. If the logic board fabrication number is any other number (
not
820-1308, 820-1440, or
820-1445), order only the multiprocessor module (Apple part number 661-2730).
So make of it what you will. If your email address is in your profile, I'll email the whole document - it's a bible for MDD owners - shows you how to remove and replace everything, with photos. It's only 3.3MB.

  • G4 Dual 1GHz MDD slows to creep then freezes

I have an employee running MacOS X 10.4.7 on a G4 Dual 1GHz MDD with 2GB RAM. This employee is having problems with the system slowing to an absolute crawl, where there are delays even in mouse movement. The system then finally locks up, and the only way to restart it is manually. Over the past couple of weeks, I have done a clean install, replaced the hard drive (because the original one completely died), and replaced all of the RAM. I have run disk and permission repairs multiple times, and have wiped out the cache multiple times.
The only thing I see left to replace is the video card. Could this be the culprit, or do I need to look at replacing the system with a new Mac?

The only background applications that have been installed are Retrospect Backup Client, and FontAgent Pro, both of which are installed on every other Mac at the office.
I have not run memtest or any other memory tester, however, the fact that I can take a complete set of RAM out of an identical machine that is stable, put it in this one, and have it still crashing should cancel RAM out as the cause of the problem.
I replaced the hard drive with a 250GB Western Digital. It is the only hard drive, so their should not be any IO conflicts between it and other drives. I have used FSCK, Disk Utility, and Drive Genius to check the drive and they all say it is good.
There are no 3rd party PCI cards installed in this system.
This Mac is configured just like all the other identical ones in the office. In fact, due to just having a clean install performed, it is even cleaner than the others.
I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM. Sometimes after resetting these, the system locks up before the gray apple even appears, requiring me to run FSCK. I have not reset the PMU yet.
Is it possible it is a bad video card? I know an inexpensive card can be obtained for testing, but my main concern is the time it will take to get it in. I don't want to waste that time if it is obvious the video card is not the answer.

  • Replacement Motherboard for Aspire M3985-UR20P in the US

Need a replacement motherboard for an Aspire M3985-UR20P. Any ideas? Couldn't find any motherboards in the Acer Store.  Thank You

Hello, You'll find below the motherboard of your desktop:MB.SJQ0P.001MAIN BD.B75.W/O.1394.LF If you use Windows preinstalled, you have to buy this one from your Acer store. You can request a quote and place an order from your Acer store by tchat or by phone. You'll need the serial number of your desktop. Microsoft OEM:"Generally, an end user can upgrade or replace all of the hardware components on a computer—except the motherboard—and still retain the license for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created. Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred to the new computer, and the license of new operating system software is required. If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do not need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC as long as the replacement motherboard is the same make/model or the same manufacturer's replacement/equivalent, as defined by the manufacturer's warranty."

  • Replacement motherboard for P6813W

I haven't been able to find an original replacement motherboard for my P6813W desktop.
I see a lot of aftermarket boards for sale. I want something that is compairable to my original since it worked well for me.
I need one that can support an AMD FX-4130 3.8Ghz proccesor and a MSI ATI Radion HD6450 video card.
Any suggestions for one that is $150 or less?

The Win 7 OS your using is tattoo'ed  with the original motherboard. It will only activate with the same board and version.  Recently my m8100e CTO motherboard (Narra3) became unsteady.   The HP s5120y has the Narra5. I tried swapping out the hard drive to the working system, but it did not activate, but did allow some latitude (3 days) to activate.  As I was busy with another project, I have not continued with the Narra5.

  • Replacing Power button dual 1G MDD

The front panel power button on my Dual 1Ghz G4 MDD is getting "flaky". I have to push it a bit sideways and to the right for it to work. Any words of wisdom on how to replace the assembly and where to buy it? The local Apple store is only "allowed" to do trades. I bring them the bad assembly and leave it with them, then they will order me a replacement. That could take "a few weeks". When I pointed out the obvious (that I would then have a computer without a power switch) they obviously understood but couldn't do anything about "policy".
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi
Instructions for replacing the front panel board can be found here:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g4mdd/g4mdd-fpb.pdf
Unfortunately it's a bit involved as the optical drive carrier and optical drive bezel have to be removed first.
I've never used them before, but the following is one company that seems to have the part for around $50:
    http://www.mac-pro.com
I'd double check the problem is with the front panel board and not the button itself in the bezel before you buy anything though. I guess it's possible it's just gunked up and needs a clean.

  • Thank Heavens for Dual Booting MDD G4s

Just thought I would relate the value of my dual boot MDD G4 at tax time. Turns out I needed some data on capital gains from my 2000 return. Checked the file and OMG, no printed copy of my return. Checked my second drive on my MDD G4 and found the Turbo Tax for Mac files for 2000. But, the program wouldn't open properly in Classic. So, I booted into OS 9 on that second drive, opened Turbo Tax and printed out all the forms I needed. Saved my butt last week as I was stressing out to finish my taxes by the weekend.
Since I've been doing my taxes on a Mac since the mid-90s, it will be nice to have those files and OS 9 available for some years to come. OS 9 forever!

Isn't this one of the reasons why the IRS lets you file extensions.

Yep with older software and files, sometimes the only way is get boot OS 9.x proper.
Having a dual-boot Mac helped me out big time while facing a critical deadling. I needed document created off disc created in 9.x, yet the document appeared as a Unix executable. Basically, this oldie but goody explains my situation (although it also happens with HFS+ 9.x discs):

  • Replacing motherboard on Dual 1.42 MDD FW800 Power Mac

I need to replace the motherboard on my Dual 1.42 MDD FW800 Power Mac.
Can someone guide me to the correct board I need to purchase? I did a search but couldn't easily find a clear-cut answer... I figure it is common knowledge for some here.

  • Where can I find a replacement motherboard for MB 2.16 intel core 2 duo?

    Hi,
One of my bosses has a macbook 2.16 GHz that's been diagnosed with a fried motherboard. He'll have to get a new one. And he asked me to shop around for a replacement. I don't see anything out there other than one on ifixit.com site. How can this be since it's a relatively new computer. When I do a search on Google I am often directed to sites that sell all kinds of replacement CPUs/processors/motherboards, often saying nothing about being ok to use in macs. Can someone please point me in a direction or two, or give me some terminology so that I can see whether or not NewEgg etc, offers parts that I can use in a mac?
    Thanks much in advance,
    Sheila

I've always bought used mother boards on ebay. Sometimes it means buying an entire laptop with perhaps a bad display or other bad parts.
If you take this route you pretty much need to be able to replace it yourself because I don't think you are likely to find a service shop that will take your used parts to fix your computer. They would ot be able to guarantee anything if they are installing unknown hardware.

  • Can a 1.42 GHz processor (MDD FW800) be fitted in a dual 1GHz MDD?

    Hi there,
I saw on eBay a couple of these 1.42 for around $180. I noticed that the heat sink is copper-based and different to what my MDD has. Can such modification be done? If so, what thermal paste, etc.?
    Thanks a lot,

Perhaps I got caught up in the excitement of "squeezing" as much as I can from my trusty MDD. I'll wait and see if the prices go down.

  • Swapping out fans in a dual 1ghz mdd

I am considering swapping out my fans in my G4MDD. I have downloaded the CHUD tools, I forget which version, and use the NAP feature in the hardware preference pane. would it be feasible to swap out fans or is it safe to keep using the NAP feature. I notice that when I use some apps like dreamweaver that I get a low key sounds coming from my system when NAP is on. When NAP is off, I get no sounds but my temps run high to the point where all fans turn on and it sounds like a wind tunnel. any recommendations on what fans I should get? I have no idea what is in my G$ and have no clue how to find out...

    Thanks for your replies Patrick.

  • G4 dual 1Ghz MDD dead?

My G4 wouldn't start. Found the battery at 2.2v, so I replaced it. Now when the power button is pressed:
    - power button light on
    - fan on (some variation in fan speed)
    - startup chime
    - black screen
    - no normal disk activity (might spin up, but hard to tell)
    - 5 sec. press of the power button shuts it down
If I remove the battery, press the PMU reset switch, or remove and replace the battery, then the 1st startup is a little different:
    - power button light on----off----on
    - power button brightens during the 5 sec press to shutdown
Tried removing extra RAM DIMMs and second HDD to return to factory configuration; same result as above.
Tried startup with cmdoption+PR to zap PRAM and did NOT get the expected second startup chime, just the same as above; does this mean startup is failing very early, before any attempt is made to load OSX from the disk?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any help,
    Lil Davie

The keyoard and mouse are the Apple originals that have worked for the past 5 years, so I doubt they are bad.
Most likely so, but carefully inspect the wires for crimps, or kinks that are severe. Shorted wires will compromise the system.
Test the keyboard on a different machine to confirm the keyboard.
    Try a different USB port.
Try with only the mouse connected directly to the tower.
A normal boot starts with a grey screen and small, centered, animated circle graphic; does the POST happen during this time?
Often referred to "the spinning gear" is what you are seeing, I believe....
POST happens immediately on power up, prior to startup chime.
Starting with keys cmdoption+PR, cmdoption+OF, and [C] all give the same result: power button lit, fan on, start chime, black screen.
Indicates bad keyboard, bad keyboard connection, bad USB port, or bad USB bus (which means logic board), bad logic board, or bad CPU, but not necessarily in that order.
Should I expect the CD drawer to open when starting with the C key?
Yes, or when the mouse is depressed (click hold) during startup.
Given I get no screen image at all, could I expect the G4 to boot from a CD inserted in a manually opened drawer?
The AHT diagnostic uses base systems to operate, which is enables the test to be run when there are hardware problems.
I assume I cannot use the hardware tools until I can boot from CD; yes?
Failure to respond to mouse or keyboard commands does remove the ability to test with diagnostic software.

  • Do I need a Mac-specific Radeon 9600 for my G4 MDD?

I have a Power Mac dual 1ghz MDD with a Radeon 9000 graphics card. I can buy a cheap ($50) Radeon Geforce 9600 AGP 512 MB card, not specified as Mac-specific. Do I need a Mac-specific card? Or will any Geforce 9600 work in the MDD?
I am planning to use my MDD as a media center for my LCD TV; will the Radeon 9600 provide much better performance than my 9000 card (with 64MB)?
    Anything else I should consider?
    Thanks!

You may hear otherwise from wiser heads, but right now I would work on the basis that it has to be Mac-specific. All other reference to such cards I have seen has required Mac specific. However, some cards are non-Mac cards which have had their firmware flashed to be Mac specific. I don't know about that card but from many years ago I recall that sometimes there could still be compatibility issues with flashed cards. On the other hand I have also seen such cards suggested here as suitable so I may be out of date on this. Just so you don't rush out and buy the card before getting other feedback.

Contact HP support and they can advise on board replacement otherwise dissemble and use that board number and go to eBay and find a match and order a replacement board to replace the bad one.
