Replacement of Hard Disk
I'm trying to replace a hard disk in a Pismo in order to upgrade to a larger capacity disk, but have run into a problem: the person I'm replacing it for has lost his Panther disk, so I can't format the drive, and it won't fit in any computer that either of us own. The Pismo refuses to show up in my devices when I use it as a firewire disk on my MacBook. Is the best way to format the disk:
a) To buy a standard Panther disk off ebay (not a specialised G3 Powerbook Panther disk) and use that?
b) Buy a caddy for the disk and use disk utility on my Mac, then put it back in the powerbook?
Thanks
Welcome!
I used the item described here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/USB2PATA/
to work on a G3 Wallstreet. I removed the drive, attached the adaptor to the bare drive and connected it to my G4 Minitower to retrieve files and run disk repair utilties. This would allow you to use a retail install DVD if you connected the bare drive to a newer Mac. No drivers are required for the device
I believe the vendor I referenced ships outside the US but I can't say what the UK price would be with shipping, VAT and the like. Knowing such devices exist could perhaps help you find one locally.

I had a problem with the hard disk on a 13" 2010 macbook pro. Replaced the hard disk with an Hitachi 1TB disk but when I tried to erase and format, it fails with input/output error and at other times saying unable to allocate memory. Any help much appreciated!
Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

Replacing T510 hard disk - 2 questions...
Hello All,
I have a T510 with 320Gb hard disk. I want to replace the hard disk with something with more capacity. I have 2 questions:
Will this void my warranty - I have 500+ days left
Can I take a complete copy of the hard disk and have all my applications and settings work exactly as they did on the old disk?
Thanks in advance,
James
Solved!
Go to Solution.Just as The Dude says. I swap my drives weekely in my T510. I use Acronis True Image and create Rescue Media on a Thumb drive. I boot to it and clone my internal HDD to an external eSATA drive. That takes 8+ minutes. I then swap drives and clone from the external eSATA to the new internal drive. When done, I remove the thumb drive and boot to the new drive - now exactly a duplicate of what is on the eSATA external.
This was, I have two complete backups of everything - and when I travel, I carry the "reserve" HDD in a small neoprene bag.
If you use the Ultrabay adapter, you can clone drive to drive internally. -
Replace the hard disk has, and also have lost the OS disk.

Reset on my computer to install the program instantly,
Is there any way?
Thank you.If I follow you correctly, you either have or will be replacing the hard drive in your iMac. You don't have the original OS X disks nor an operating system disk. Do you have a bootable backup? Here are some steps/options:
1) If you have a bootable backup, install the hard drive, boot from the external hard drive, then use SuperDuper or CCC to copy the external hard drive to your new internal hard drive.
2) You have your old hard drive, and it's not dead. Put it into an external case and see above.
3) You don't have either a bootable backup or a working old hard drive. You can try calling Apple Support to see if they still have the original OS X disks for your system. If they do, they'll charge a nominal price for them.
4) You checked and Apple no longer has disks for your system. You can go to the used market to buy Leopard 10.5 disks. If you do, be sure and get retail black-faced disks, but don't get the black-faced disk which is an upgrade disk .... if you don't have 10.4 on your system, it won't work. Careful of gray-faced OS X disks as they are locked to the original system type they ship with. So a gray faced OS X 10.5 disk for a MacBook won't work on your iMac.
5) Another related option is to buy 10.6 Snow Leopard, if your system meets requirements. This is still sold by Apple, and in the US is available online for $29.99 from the Apple store. Snow Leopard requirements are:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
6) Or you could consider Lion, via the USB stick that is sold in Apple stores. Lion requirements are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory (4GB recommended)
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Hopefully I haven't totally misunderstood your question, and answered something you weren't asking! -

Replacing a hard disk: will any drive work?
The 60GB internal hard disk on my 12" PowerBook G4 no longer works reliably. I know this because I can install OS X on my external Maxtor hard drive and boot up with no problem through firewire, but not with the internal one.
I want to replace the internal hard disk. Will any drive that seems to have the right specs-2.5", 9.5mm IDE Hitachi 80GB-do the job? I just bought the described drive at a computer shop, and haven't opened it yet, but I want to make sure I can actually make use of it. Are there any other important considerations?
Thanks in advance.
17" iMac G5 2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.3) 12" PowerBook G4 867MHzGood to see you have managed to get the correct drive.
I have seen posts on these boards where the SATA version has been purchased by mistake as online resellers don't always make enough distinction between the serial and parallel/ultra versions in their sales descriptions.
Even when I was buying my drive I had to triple check that I was buying the correct one.

Hi,
I had to replace my Presario V4435NR hard disk (80 GB) with a new 160 GB hard disk from Samsung. The original hard disk did not crash but was churning all the time and did not have enough space for all I wanted to put on it. I installed the new 160 GB hard disk (which of course did not have the recovery partition that my old one had on it) and ran recovery from the recovery DVD I made when I first bought the laptop. Everything worked fine until I tried to update my xp through windows update website. This is the error # I get from windows updates (0x80072EE2).
How can I get my xp to run updates sealessly as it used to before?
THank you
AbdulI installed it already and things were fine (updates installed with no problems) for a while but the same problem resurfaced after I installed MS Office. Xp gave me the same error code when I tried to update. Woke up in the morning and tried windows update again and windows found lots of updates and installed them smoothly.
What is causing this inconsistency?
* Now, I'm unable to get any updates (windows updates website gives me the same error code) -
Satellite A10 S213 replacement of Hard Disk Drive
My Satellite A10 S213 is equipped with a Hard Disk Drive MK4021GAS HDD2182 B ZE01 S (40 GB) . The Disk is making more and more often loud and strange noises although it works well.
But it will certainly not go on for long.
I would like to replace the Disk Drive with something compatible and if possible with more capacity. Around 100 GB would be fine .
So my question is :
*Does a replacement of the HDD MK4021GAS HDD2182 B ZE01 S with more capacity exist for the Satellite A10 S213 ?*
Thank you for your help.
gh246Hi
I assume your notebook supports the IDE HDD controller.
Possibly the IDE HDD controller supports only the 28bit LBA which would allows you to use max 120GB HDD.
I think you could install an bigger HDD. -

Replacing the hard disk on an iBook G3 (700 Dual USB)
Hi
I'm kind of regarded as the guy to go and see when anything goes wrong with a Mac, here in Athens, Greece. But I have very little hardware experience with laptops. A friend of mine just brought me her iBook G3 (700 Dual USB), running Panther 10.3.9 to check out. She was getting the initial start up screen (grey Apple, spinning wheel) and once in every ten times or more actually getting into her hard disk. Anyway after a bunch of tests I narrowed the problem down to the hard disk (40 gig, I think). The disc is basically presenting all the symptoms of a damaged disc. I can not even wipe and reinstall on it. When I start up from the Panther system CD, it runs normally, up to the point where I tell it to install, it goes to the next screen where you choose your destination disc, and shows, nothing! Disk Utility on the install disc sees the hard disk and identifies it as an IBM, but the single partition with Panther installed is greyed out. I tells me that the disk can't be wiped because of an ERROR -20. I also tried mounting it on my G4 as a firewire external, and in fact managed to rescue the data, (though it took an hour to transfer 250 kb of data). I even tried to wipe it in my own machine as an external disc, but again the same problem. Strangely enough Disk Utility says the disc does not need repair.
Anyway, I decided to change the disk and be done with it. But as I say I have very little hardware experience with laptops, and the Apple support pages don't have any documents that show the internal workings of the iBook, except for how to change memory and install Airport cards. Aside from the fact that I still have to figure out where to find a new disc for the machine, I don't really want to open it up until I can check some instructions.
Can anyone give me a clue how you get inside these machines? I have a Powerbook G4 manual which does shows how to open it up and change the HD, but I'm not sure how similar these two models are internally.
So I'd appreciate any clue as to the procedure for opening these babies up. Thanks in advance. It's not an easy thing to do. Arm yourself with a tiny screwdriver and loads of patience:

I purchased Toshiba Satellite L505 laptop and it came with Windows 7 Pro pre-installed. The initial configuration is 4 GB RAM and 500 GB disk. Now I want to upgrade the hard disk with 240 GB SSD. I don't have Win 7 disk to re-install. How do I do about it
now?You can generate recovery disks using current windows.
Please check with Toshiba on creating recovery disks.

Hi there, I would like to replace my 60Gb MacBook HD with a 160Gb HD and keep my existing Documents, settings and programs.
I understand how to create a disk image on an external 2.5" SATA firewire drive, but once this is done is it possible to just open the external drives caddy and swap the internal and external drives, so that I have the new larger drive with the disc image internally and the original 60Gb internal drive in the firewire caddy as an external back up?
This sounds like a great solution for all MacBook HD upgraders wishing to keep their original drive and its contents (separate 2.5" SATA caddys are also very pricey) but I cant find anything to confirm it works.
MacBook core duo 2.0Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.9) MacBook, Cinema 20", Ipod Nano 8GB
Mac OS X (10.4.8) MacBook, Cinema 20", Ipod Nano 8GBWell... most can be opened. However... the companies that make them want to be able to sell you new ones. It's far cheaper to just buy a new drive and pop it in the case... so they sometimes make them tough to open. What I would suggest that you do is just buy an external enclosure. Something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392009
Then just buy the bare drive that you want. These enclosures are made to make changing the drive easy. It's usually cheaper to go this way as well. Then you can put your old drive in the case and use it as an external drive as well. -
Replacing a hard disk is broken no OS CD.
My MacBook pro broke down the hard drive, I replaced the drive, I don't have the CD to install the OS X. The original OS X is 10.6.8.
How can I install the OS?Enter the serial number of your MBP (on the bottom) here:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
In order to install Yosemite, the MBP, it must be a Mid/Late 2007 MBP or newer. Otherwise Snow Leopard or Lion are the latest compatible OSXs.
Ciao.
