Replacement Power Supply Works But Smells

Having replaced the Power Supply, and have it working again, I have noticed a sort of smell, an odour of very hot electronic components. I smelt it this morning when I opened the door where the G4 lives. Booting up it doesn't stop. On a scale of one to ten, I would give it about three. There is no smoke, yet.
Is there a software program which can show the internal temperature of the CPU's?

Yeah The smell is not diminishing. I had shut the door after a 4 hour session with the window open, I shut the door and the window and went out. When I opened the door the odour was there, a bit stronger because the door and the window were shut. Maybe the fans inside Power Supply or the G4 are not working properly, I don't know. The G4 is fully functional despite the smell, burning/melting, capacitors or something inside there. Anyone else had anything like this after a Power Supply replacement? Not funny.

Should I check the memory cards themselves? Reseat them?
    Yes.
Memtest X or Rember to test the RAM.
    Reseat is also good.
The iPhone 4 doesn't like USB 1.1 much.
after the update the computer was working well, except for this freeze when ever I connect iPhone.
I'd try USB 2.0 PCI. That's how I connect my iPhone 4s, and have connected all iPhones and iPods, to my G4.
    Never an issue.
Can't say the same for USB 1.1.......
The above (previous post) linked PCI card is cheap enough.
    Want cheaper, try this:

The NEC chipset is the desired chipset, regardless of what OS the maker says is compatible.
OS X has native NEC chipset USB support.

  • Cat Peed on MacBook, Still works but smells. HELP!

I was cat sitting for my Aunt and Uncle on vacation and one of them decided to pee on my laptop sitting on their expensive coffee table. luckily i closed my laptop and the pee only got on the outside and came right off without damage to the keyboard, motherboard, or power supply. But, IT STILL SMELLS LIKE CAT ****! I wiped it down with Lysol wipes and the smell is still present. Is there anything I can gently use to clean my laptop to get rid of this disgusting smell. I just got this thing for college, needs to last me 4 years with out my gaging.

Warm water and vinegar, you'll need to be extremely careful that no liquid enters the machine (wet the cloth, not the Mac), you will probably need to repeat this a number of times. Soft cloths (so that the Mac doesn't scratch) and absorbent tissue for blotting. Do not let it get wet, go slow.
    Good luck
And once more just for emphasis .... Do Not Let The Mac get Wet!

I'm in need of a replacement power supply for an Airport Extreme N base station.
Is this something I can pick up at a friendly neighborhood Radio Shack, or do I need to order the OEM part from Apple?
I don't need the automatic international voltage switching, just something that can power this puppy with US AC. Thanks.

    Tom welcome to the discussions.
I would probably call the Apple number.

I am sure that they can point you in the right direction.
I am a little shocked that one of the Apple Retail stores can't offer you a Power Supply.
If all else fails, it sounds like you have tried an alternitve, if it works use it, until you can get a replacment.

  • Need step by step directions to install a replacement Power Supply for a HP Color LaserJet 1215

I have a HP Color LaserJet 1215 printer that is only a couple of years old.  Had a power problem at home that burnt out the power supplies of two HP Towers, a DSL Modem, and (I think) the power supply of my printer.  I have located a replacement power supply but would sure appreciate any one that would know how to replace.  I need a step by step guide aas to how to perform such a task.
It would also help to have a diagram of the printer showing precisely how to get to the power supply.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.  I have spent days looking for this information and can't seem to find any.

  • Where can I buy a replacement power supply?

Where can I buy a replacement power supply for my time capsule?

Apple do not sell parts for the TC..
And do not allow their OEM to sell parts.
So you need to bypass Apple and create your own.
    Or fix the existing one.

  • Will this video card and power supply work on my computer? HP Pavilion p6213w Desktop PC

I have a HP Pavilion p6213w Desktop PC, will this video card and power supply work on my computer?

    Power Supply: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4668507&sku=C13-2511
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

It is unlikely that the power supply will fit/work in your HP Pavilion p6213w Desktop Computer. Please consider the Corsiar CX500, CX500M, CX600, and CX600M for your power supply needs. These power supplies are the same physical size as the factory unit and are known to fit and work in most HP full-sized consumer desktop computers.
There is a chance that the GTX 760 and other current generation video cards may not work in your computer. These newer cards typically require the computer to support the most current UEFI standards and many motherboards don't meet this criteria. Please know the return policy on any video card you purchase, in case it doesn't work. If the GTX 760 doesn't work, consider the GTX 650/660 Ti or equivalent AMD graphics card for your graphics card needs.

took my imac g5 to apple store where genius told me it needed a new power supply because machine would not turn on and when it did just to gray apple screen Even though the serial number was in the range for extended repair program, i was told mine was to old and did not fall under any repair program. I replaced power supply same issue of gray/white apple screen and fan kicks on loud. reset pram, reset smu, checked diagnostic led lights 1,2,3 all light as they should. Cannot start up with discs either. Anyone with any ideas it would be much appreciated.

I would venture to say that your 3pin female adapter should be plugged into a 3pin male adapter on your motherboard.  This allows your system to control fan speed on the power supply.  I hope this helps you.

    JCGood1984, welcome to the forum.
The computer should take a standard ATX power supply unit (PSU).  I suggest measuring the existing PSU and compare the measurements to the one in the links.  If the measurements are the same, it should fit.  I don't know anything about the brand, however.

  • Elite m9200t. Just quit working. Does not go into bios. new power supply - nothing but fans.

    HP Elite M9200t
    Windows 7 32-bit

    No changes made to system.
I hit the turn-on button one morning and nothing happened.  Looked in the case and was running except the case fan.  No lights were on.  I tested the power supply and it tested good.  Tried again - nothing.  Connected a new power supply and tried again; Lights worked and cpu fan worked, but no attempt at boot.
I have disconnected everything - same result.
Does this sound like a bad ASUS mortherboard?

Heather, the PSU for the first gen G5 iMacs and the ALS models are the same physical size, but the ALS PSU is an auto-switching 110-220v model. Nice to have, but not the cause of the problem if it is working correctly.
Is your first gen one of those effected by the Repair Extension Program? If so, you actually have 2 years on problems related to the PSU and video.
Give Apple a call back and see if they have any suggestions, but don't let them put you off as you are still within the warrantee.

  • 2008 iMac 8,1 still won't power up after replacing power supply

A few days ago my iMac powered-ON as usual at 8AM and was working normally, I checked email and left for a meeting. When I returned 30 minutes later my office had a slight odor of hot bakelite and the screen was dark, instead of displaying the screen saver. Thinking the power may have blinked, I pushed the start button on the back and nothing happened, tried several more times, then depressing and holding, still nothing - absolutely lifeless.
Presumed it was probably the power supply, so took it into the Genius Bar and my suspicion was confirmed; they checked the LEDs and advised that the power supply was mostly bad. Despite the hassle, the solution seemed simple enough: replace the power supply and I'd be back in business. That proved to be wrong!
Bought a new (NIB) power supply from a reputable dealer and carefully disassembled/reassembled the iMac feeling ever so confident that I'd hear the chime and fan whir when I depressed the ON/OFF Button. To my total disbelief nothing has changed! Its still dark and lifeless as before. Not discounting a theoretical chance that both power supplies could be bad I'm puzzled what to do next and where to look. Obviously, there isn't much in line ahead of the power supply, but given the fact there is no fan noise and no glimmer on the display, I can't fathom it could be anything other than something between the power cord and the power supply.
What could have caused the hot bakelite smell? The original power supply had NO bakelite odor and no burned chips, traces, scorched transformer windings or cooked capacitors. That had surprised me, so sniffed around the motherboard/backplane and detected a slight bakelite odor at or near the hard drive; I haven't cracked the case yet to examine the HDD - but, even if it were dead, I'd still hear the chime and fan, and maybe see at least a slight glow on the display, right?
And so, I'm calling on all you "pros from Dover" for some insights, wisdom and pointers to help me diagnose the problem and get the thing fixed. Your thoughts?
    Thanks, much, compadres. AK

My assumption is the same as KT’s, the logic board fried. If the logic board is functional, even if the hard drive is dead, it should power on and perform the POST. Since it isn’t my advice is the same as KT’s - hope you don’t need Snow Leopard to run some older program(s).
