Replacement superdrive wont eject discs

Hello!
A while back my superdrive failed and I replaced it with a NEC ND-3520A. I also installed patchburn for iApp support and everything is great.... Usually.... but sometimes when I try to eject media the imac shows the white eject icon, moves the DVD icon off of the desktop, but doesnt open the tray. Once this happens the only way I can get the tray to open is to restart- after which everything behaves normally. I tried using disc utillity and Roxio toast hoping to find a way to eject without restarting, but they both just hang. Does anyone know of a way I can make my iMac re-scan or reset the drive so I can try to eject again?? A unix command maybe?? better yet anyone know how to solve this problem??
Thanks
Bob

This may not be the "preferred" answer but.....
One day my son was trying to play a game on my Macbook while I was away. He inserted a DVD that didn't get recognized by the computer. He couldn't get it out and cried apologetically to me. Because I don't have AppleCare I opened it with small screw drivers, removed the disc and reassembled it. But I later found out that if the Macbook is in "sleep mode" but open, it will not accept any discs and if you put one in and "wake it up" the disc will not be recognized or ejected no matter what you do.

my cd drive wont eject discs unless you smack the bottom of the computer. does any one know an email adress to contact apple technical support? also my fan is making horrible noises. and the computer wont play any videos i download now in any program. i live in alaska, is there any way to mail it into apple to have repair done on it?

The simplest is to call the AppleCare support toll free number…

… and talk to them about it. You're not going to be able to interact with them via e-mail.

  • DVD Superdrive keeps ejecting discs

My trusty old PB G4 has just started to eject discs from the dvd superdrive. I've tried various discs (mainly cd-r) but for some reason it squeaks and squawks then ejects the disc????
Could this be a media problem or perhaps.......a hardware problem?
    Any thoughts gladly appreciated.

I'm having this problem with my 2.5 Penryn Macbook Pro
And I had the same problem with my last mac which was a 2.8 24" silver iMac.
I took it to be repaired, they replaced the superdrive, and then I sold it on. But now the person i sold the iMac to is saying they are having the same problem.
It must be a fault with Apple's superdrives. My external firewire slot loading burner works perfectly.
Unfortunately I'll have to use that and wait until I buy my next mac before i can take this one in to be repaired. Hopefully they dont just replace the drive with another one of the same model.
I found a solution for this problem with old powerbooks:

  • Internal iMac superdrive keeps ejecting discs

The Superdrive on my iMac will not accept any discs. It just immediately ejects discs that I insert. This happened before about a year ago, but I forgot how I got it to work, and I can't find the thread here.
Thus this request: What do I need to do to get the Superdrive on my iMac to work again? I already cleaned it out completely with the air duster. I know that there is some keyboard startup trick or something that needs to be done to reset something, but my brain is aging, and I forgot what it is. Obviously any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

  • Macbook wont eject disc

    hey,
i just got my macbook today, black bto 1gb ram, 120gb hdd. the first disc i put in was microsoft office to install. the problem is the disc wont eject. ive tried using the eject button on the keyboard, dragging the disc to the trash bin, rebooting holding down the mouse button the whole time. every time the disc attempts to eject but doesnt and revs up again, loading the disc so it shows up mounted on the desktop again. any help greatly appreciated, applecare is closed right now and my apple store genius bars are full for the night.

This same situation happened to me with my new MacBook. I got a Family Guy DVD stuck in the drive. The first time it happened I figured it was a fluke. I banged it around a little bit and it came out. I thought everything would be fine. Man, was I wrong. The second time the DVD remained stuck. It would not come out. The computer would try to eject it with no success.
So, since I am a U.S. Marine stationed in West Africa, getting my MacBook back to Apple for repair wasn't so easy. The first thing I did was DHL my MacBook to a friend in the states so he could take it to an Apple Store for repair. It seemed pretty straight forward. The only issue was I would have had to wait for a long time to use my new MacBook again. I was willing to make the sacrifice.
Well DHL thought it would be a good idea to smash my lap top into bits before delivering it. So instead of just a stuck DVD I had a smashed laptop to deal with. I was a little furious. So, I had to make a claim with DHL which they told me could take up to 90 days. So I just went ahead and bought a new MacBook and I'm still waiting for my claim from DHL to go through.
I hope my new MacBook doesn’t have the same problem. If it does I’m just going to get a PC and I HATE PC’s. But they are cheaper.
Bottom line: There seems to be a problem with many of the DVD drives on the MacBooks. I just might use an external one.

  • Superdrive keeps ejecting disc

I have a 1 ghz 17"powerbook, matshita UJ-815 superdrive, running 10.4.2 and all the latest updates, I have run disc first aid, checked and deleted the duplicate fonts, reset the PRAM, restarted with the disc in, re-inserted the disc numerous times in a row, All to no avail, evertime I insert anytype of disc, after about 35 seconds, and a few "reading disc" type of sounds, the disc ejects, this applies to anytype of disc, cd's dvd's new, already burned, etc. I have tried them all. I have read a few other posts about people having the same problem. Apple care has run out, and the nearest apple store is 2 hours away. Any recommendations, I am considering purchasing a new superdrive from here :

    And then follow this procedure:

Any advice before I proceed would be greatly appreciated!

I have used the procedure below 4-6 times in the last 6 months, has always worked until this go around tonight. I don't see any other suggestions.... so it might help.... I'm trying again now.
Note: I'm using 10.4.2, but no relationship to software recent software install or upgrade... just decided not to work.
•I did read an apple note that changing batteries while unplugged an asleep can mess with power manager...... and that seems to be the case when the disk is quietly never being accessed before eject....
I have the same 17 1ghz powerbook, and just fixed this problem for 2nd time in 6 months. (No clear idea why it happens.... from posts it appears that power manager/battery processes sometimes fool the drive into thinking it must act that way)
anyway, I followed ALL of the suggestions posted in these discussion areas, none worked alone... this is the order that did it.
    1. Reset PRAM by restarting holding down apple-option p-r until 2nd restart sound
    2. nvram reset (see this post)
Macintosh: How to Reset PRAM and NVRAM
... Article ID: 2238. Created: 1987-06-02. Modified: 2004-06 ... steps in the Solution section of technical document 42642: "Macintosh: Computer Starts to Text-Based Open ...

    3. power manager reset-
    shut down, unplug, pull battery
    - hold down apple-option-shift-power button
    - release, then replace battery
    -restart
    PowerBook G4 (12-inch)

PowerBook G4 (17-inch)
PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.33GHz)
PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.5GHz)
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
    this worked..... good luck

More often than not Quality is the issue as well as the correct Format.
This issue has been discussed many times in the fourms.
Many users are not aware of the big difference in the quality in the Media for sale on the market today.
There is also a difference in the quality of the media in the same package from one disc to another.
So it seems this issue boils down to the best in over all quality of manufactured MEDIA.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Again, after viewing the quality guide, some users will expieriance some confusion.
I have tried several different brands and personally had my best luck with.
This Media will explain that it will burn in the OLDER as well as the NEWER Computers. It means that this media will burn at the best speed, your computer is capable of.
Again most users are not aware that there is a huge difference.
Again many computers are capable of reading and writing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW as well as DL, Going under the aumption DVD is just DVD, which of course is not the case, have a look at the link below.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
SO in closing, you will have your best luck using DVD-R Media and one that is high enough in quality that it will burn as stated above. 1X through16X

  • External Superdrive keeps ejecting disc

Ok, I've had my Superdrive since March this year and it's possibly seen around 20 - 30 discs in total.
Given that it's just over 6 months old, why the **** has it started to play up?
Cd's load and play with no issues but load any DVD and it just gets spat out.
Looking around the Apple (gated) community and it does seem to be an issue with these drives - funny how my old DVD player (and CD players) are all happily ticking away with at least 12 solid years of use each.
Any ideas people, before I take my sledgehammer to this seemingly worthless piece of crap (lost the receipt so it's probably a paperweight - my bad)?
    Thanks in earnest,
    Gary

If you are still able to play CD's, but not DVD's, you may have already changed the SuperDrives "Region Code" 5 times, that may be why it will not play the DVD's you are inserting.
DVD Player 5.x: DVD region codes:
Important: You can set the region code for your DVD drive only five times (including the original setting). The fifth time you change the code, it will be permanently set.
DVD Player 5.x: Change the region code of a DVD drive:
Determine the drive’s current region code
Choose File > Get Disc Info and click Regions.
Are these DVD's that you have burned?
If they are DVD's that you have burned, are you trying to play disks from different manufacturers?
Have you tried a number of DVD's to check that they ALL will not play?
You might need to wait for one of the more experienced forum members to help answer your question if these haven't helped.

  • Superdrive wont read discs anymore

My superdrive was working perfectly fine, I used it for hours which i think might be a part of my problem but suddenly after inserting a disc it stopped responding, the disc still spins around and makes noises and seems like its working but nothing shows up on my desktop. after a long time maybe 5 mins or so it says that the cd is blank and asks me how i want to continue!!!! CD i inserted is not blank!  PLLLZZ HELP MMEEE

I have always had a Mac Mini desktop.  I had 3 Superdrives just quit working or have issues over the years.  I could plug in an external DVD drive and the disk and other functions would work fine.  But the internal drive would not read the disk!  My MacBook would read the disk with the internal drive, but not the MacMini.  I have upgraded my MacMini and there is no superdrive, so I connected an external unit and I have not had any problems.  My MacBook internal drive has never had problems and it's at least 6 yrs old now.
For some reason, I just never had those superdrives work for very long in the MacMini desktop.  If out of warranty, the least expensive way to go is to buy an external drive and see if that works for you.  OWC, which carries a lot of Mac related stuff, has some at reasonable prices, fast shipping and they are a reliable company.  No, I don't work there.
Btw, I never found any workarounds.  Once they started messing up, they only got worse.
Oops, I meant to reply to OP!  But, now I can't find a way to change that.  Sorry.

  • SuperDrive wont read disc

I've tried to update the software via the utilities folder, that keeps giving me an error message "There was an error installing this update. Quit all open applications and try updating again. Same problem.. after the Firmware update, I can read only the official audio cd...
All my movie DVD doesn't work and it is impossible to writ any disk...
    All @#ªΩ for simple noise...
I think that i will bring my computer to apple for fix it. Hopfully it is under waranty!
I'm already watching and asking for serval forum and people... and it's look like if I downgrade by myself my computer it will not be under waranty longer...

  • SuperDrive still wont grab disc after SMC & PRAM RESET

My superdrive in my Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2012 wont grab disc when I insert it (like 99% of the way in) and I am getting a little frustrated since I have tried everything from reseting the SMC & PRAM to going to the terminal and typing the "drutil eject". Well actually they work, but they only work TEMPORARILY. Once I restart or shutdown my laptop the problem returns. I have to Open Disk Utility for it to grab the disk once I insert it or go to terminal and enter "drutil eject" everytime!
Please help I dont want to replace anything since I am short of cash right now and the warranty is expired.
    Thanks in advance!

After testing with a few diferent dvds - it seems the reader works with some and fails on others - all movie dvds having been viewed on same machine in the past. This suggests maybe some sensitivity within the reader itself - as all the dvds are clean and work on other machines.
With a data dvd - the reader can take ages to load up certain files - and yet the dvd appears to be in good condition. The data dvd was created on a windows machine - so not sure if the quality of the writing process could be a factor - but the fact that a brand new unused movie dvd is rejected suggests a fault with the internal drive.
Have contacted Apple support and hopefully will get a new reader installed under extended warranty.

  • How far should SuperDrive eject discs?

How far does your SuperDrive eject discs?
The one on my MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 2.33 GHz ejects recordable discs only about 1-3/8 in, which makes it impossible to remove them without touching the top or bottom surface. My newer MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 3.06 GHz ejects them much farther (about halfway), so they can be handled by the edges instead.
The problem doesn't occur with commercially pressed installation discs, only with discs I use to record on (Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R, Verbatim 8X DVD-R and Taiyo-Yuden 8X CD-R).
This is the second replacement of the drive from AppleCare with the same problem. (At least I think they replaced it a second time. The service record said, "Doesn't eject media" instead of "Doesn't fully eject media," so maybe they tested it and thought it was fine.)
Is this normal behavior? Anyone else seeing this?
    Thank you,
    David

    MacBookPro Lover wrote:
My MBP 15" doesn't eject very far, but a little more than what your's does (I'd say around 2"). It does ok for me, though.
Do you notice any difference between commercially recorded discs and recordable ones?

  • My imac keeps ejecting discs and wont read them

my imac keeps ejecting discs and wont read them

I did not ask for the full serial number.  Anyway, you are the 7th week of 2008, unlikely that is a PRAM battery issue.
Since your machine isn't under warranty, I'd try a CD cleaner that supports car stereos, like this one from Radio Shack online, but only if Apple Authorized service technician says it is safe:
    http://www.radioshack.com/index.jsp?productId=2361963
This being a user to user forum, I can't say if it is or isn't.
Or you can buy a supported external optical drive, like the various ones from http://www.macsales.com/
Internal optical drive replacement is complicated, and possibly covered on http://www.ifixit.com/

  • Superdrive ejecting discs after few seconds ...

    Hi,
Everthing worked well for 5 months ... After last update of the Tiger to 10.4.5 I have noticed that whatever type of disc I insert superdrive is ejecting it after few seconds. I've tried CD Audio , DVD's ever Tiger installation discs .. all were ejected after few seconds ...
Do you have any ideas what may be wrong ?
    it's strange ???
    Kind Regards
    Ralph

    hi ralph--
i would try various things for this. first i would boot to open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. if that does nothing, then try an smu reset, which is quite simple for your model of computer. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446. also, install any available firmware updates for your computer. they are available on this page. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303903 if that doesn't do anything, then i would try disk repair http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672. and if that fails, then i would try the archive and install http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. but if you archive, make sure you repair the disk beforehand, and do software updates after. i would not archive and install without go through the other troubleshooting steps. hope this solves your problem. Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
