Replacement WiFi USB with 802.1x support

My WiFi died recently, and now I need a replacement WiFi adapter. I found that none of the wifi usb were actually listed to be compatible. My school uses 802.1x, so that is a mandatory feature. Also, the wifi adapter has to have decent range.
I would not like to repair, because it is too expensive, and it is difficult to find time in my schedule to bring it in, but I need the laptop every day.

After two iPhone updates, Apple still has not released an update on 802.1x authentication support. This deficiency certainly cripples a lot of iPhone users who rely on their enterprise wireless network for day-to-day activities. This is very disappointing and I hope Apple will rectify this situation soon. However, for anyone who is interested in sending and receiving emails with their enterprise Microsoft Exchange Server, I highly recommend you to try the Mobile Gateway solution from synchronica.com.

    hi amit
i personally appreciate ur input, just a thought , i tried trunking between 2 cisco 2950s with a media converter in between , it didnt work out, i mean , is it a must to have a converter with trunk functionality for the links to work and have trnking , as a converter is just a passive device which connects two ports, the links come up, but no trunking, any specific config i need to make in order to achive trunking with a converter in between with no trunk features on the converter itself.
lastly can i have ur email id, just in case if i need more queries.

I recently installed an Airport Extreme 802.11N that I bought in May 2013. It replaced an Airport Extreme 802.11N that I bought in July 2007. My USB printer (Lexmark E350d) worked fine with the old Airport, but I'm having trouble with the new one. When I try to print, I get a USB Waiting message on the printer, and when I force a page to print by pressing Go on the printer, I get a page that says ERROR: syntaxerror OFFENDING COMMAND: true.  . . .cvt . . . fpgm . . . x . . .lglyf . . . <..J head . . .     STACK: / [    -mark-   /sfnts I’ve tried shutting down the printer and disconnecting it and the Airport, but that doesn’t help. I reset the settings on the printer. I upgraded the Airport firmware and removed, reinstalled, and upgraded the Lexmark printer driver. After I upgraded the firmware and printer driver, a few pages printed correctly, but then I got the same syntax error page as before. Any suggestions for getting the printer to work correctly?

Use a powered USB hub between the AE and the printer.. the usb port does sometimes have issues.
Try deleting the printer in the Mac and reinstall it.. the change in AE can represent effectively a change of printer.. it is important to make sure that is all up to date.
Beyond that.. USB printers.. ughhh! Consider for two toners you can go and buy a proper network printer.

  • WinPE 5 802.1x Support with SCCM 2012 R2

Please see updated information a few posts down.
I am trying to get 802.1x support working to deploy windows 7-8 machines using MDT2012.  I have checked IEEE 802.1x network authenication protocol under features of the deployment share properties.  I am trying to follow the guide on the deploymentguys.
I have my files on the boot image and can do a net start dot3svc, we are not using certificates at the moment for our 802.1x so I am skipping that line.  doing a netsh lan add profile filename="X:\8021x\ Local Area Connection.xml " interface="Ethernet2"
does work.  I am having a problem with the third step when I run the following command netsh lan set eapuserdata filename=x:\8021x\Wired-WinPE-UserData-PEAP-MSChapv2.xml allusers=yes interface="Ethernet2"  All i get is error setting
user data for interface ethernet2, the operation is not supported.
How does one get 802.1x working in WinPE 4.0?
Heres the latest updated in this first post so you dont have to scroll way to the bottom to get the latest relevant information:
So here's the current situation and hopefully someone has seen it before.
My boot image has the prestart command set to x:\8021x\configure8021x.cmd.  If i make a USB boot media this command will run and work with an 8021x wire plugged in.  If I PXE boot with a non8021x
wire plugged in this command will run.  If I PXE Boot with an 8021x
wire plugged in it does not run the command.  If the boot image gets staged from the windows software center it
also will not run my command.
Does anyone know why the staged boot image and booting from PXE are not running my prestart command?  It seems that during PXE and staged boot that the network initializes BEFORE it runs any prestart commands?

Well progress on this issue has been made.  So why I was getting the operation not supported is because I was exporting our corporate 8021x LAN profile which gets put in place by group policy, which i assumed would work.  So i unjoined the windows
7 machine from the domain and was then able to modify the LAN profile to be what is exactly in the documentation with images.
Then the above command works and I no longer get the operation is not supported and I am able to move on to the next steps which is to create a script file which contains the net start and the netsh commands i was using above to test it. Great!
Now my next issue comes up when the instructions tell me to modify the winpeshl.ini file which it says is located at X:\windows\System32\Winpeshl.ini.  So I mount the boot.wim file that I did earlier and I browse to the location in question however
the first thing I notice is that when I open the winpeshl.ini file to go to modify it I expect to see:
    [LAUNCHAPPS]
    “%SYSTEMDRIVE%\sms\bin\i386\TsBootShell.exe”
Instead what I find is it says:
    [LAUNCHAPPS]
    %Windir%\system32\netstart.exe, -prompt%SYSTEMDRIVE%\sources\recovery\recenv.exe
So I thought ok I will create a copy of this file and rename it to winpeshl.ini.bak and then modify it to say what It says it should be in the instructions which is:
    [LAUNCHAPPS]
    winpeinit.exe
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Windows\System32\wscript.exe, %SYSTEMDRIVE%\8021x\Configure8021xUser.wsf
    “%SYSTEMDRIVE%\sms\bin\i386\TsBootShell.exe”
Next I unmount the boot.wim file and overwrite the copy I had.  Next I update the distribution points and PXE boot a test machine. What I see next is
what I dont understand.  Upon booting and hiting F8 to get to a command line I cd into x:\windows\system32\ and notice that I do indeed still have my winpeshl.ini.bak file so I open the winpeshl.ini file I had thought I modified earlier and low and behold
it contains this which is different when I look at it when I mounted the wim file:
    [LAUNCHAPPS]
    “%SYSTEMDRIVE%\sms\bin\i386\TsBootShell.exe”
So something is modifying this file and setting it this way effectively overwriting what I put in so that my script can run and configure the 8021x user settings.
Is there some updated documentation somewhere, how do I proceed from here??
The next steps after this would be to modify the unattend.xml file at a certain location to run the Configure8021xUserWindows.wsf script which does the winpe script just instead
of running from X: it runs from C: as it says in the documentation.   But I can't move on to test this yet without getting the winpe part working.

  • USB Printer with Time Capsule (with 802.11ac)

    Hello Guys,
I have a Canon MP258 inkjet printer and it's not working with my airport time capsule (with 802.11ac) .
I had tried a lot of method to solve it but it can't be done.
Pls, help me to solved this puzzled.Thx
    Best Regards,
    Johnremy

If the name of your printer does not appear in the printer list when you click the + button, try contacting Canon Support to see if they have an updated printer driver that you could download and install.
Download Free Driver Pinter Canon Pixma MP258
    http://filedir.com/drivers/printer/canon-pixma-mp258-mp250-printer-driver-downlo ad-516940.html
If this does not work, then Canon has not provided the printer driver for their device to operate on a network USB connection.
Do you understand that if you can get the print function working, that fax, scan, copy, maintenance, etc functions will not work when the MP258 is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule?
Only the print function is supported on the Time Capsule, so if you need the other functions, you should connect the MP258 to your computer.....not the Time Capsule.

  • Replacing the Realtek wifi card with an Intel one

    Hey everyone,
I am trying to replace the poor performing realtek wifi module with an Intel Centrino one on my T420.
I purchased an "Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205"  which is one of the chips the T420 comes with.
Apparently my chip is not whitelisted, as I could not boot with it plugged in.
Lenovo support was unable to tell me where to get a Lenovo branded chip.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello and welcome,
As you've discovered, wifi cards have to be the correct model (Intel xyz) and have a Lenovo FRU number.
I can't link to the T420 Hardware Maintenance Manual at the moment - support is undergoing maintenance
Here are the Intel models and FRUs from my local T420 HMM:

  • 802.11ac wifi speeds with the BCM4360 chip and broadcom-wl driver

    Hello,
    First, some preliminary information:
I'm currently in need of a wireless adapter for my desktop computer. I recently got an Asus RT66U router, so I'm looking for a wireless adapter that supports the 802.11ac standard. The best candidate I've come across is the Asus PCE-AC68, and PCIe based adapter that uses Broadcom's BCM4360 chip, the same wifi chip used in the Late 2013 retina Macbook Pro. It is worth noting that every available 802.11ac compatible PCIe based wireless adapter seemingly uses this chip (I've heard of people having success with 802.11ac speeds using Qualcomm Atheros based wifi adapters and the ath10k driver, but there are no Atheros-based PCIe wireless adapters on the market, as far as I can tell).
The Broadcom BCM4360 chip is not supported by the b43 driver, and I believe it also isn't supported by the brcmsmac driver, since it isn't listed here.
This leaves me with the proprietary broadcom-wl driver, which is listed as supporting the BCM4360.
What I'm interested in learning is how a wireless adapter based on the BCM4360 will perform using the broadcom-wl driver--I don't want to buy a wifi adapter that won't work at its full capacity, after all.
I have found user reports here and here from April 2014 stating that the driver runs BCM4360 based adapters in 802.11a/b/g mode and doesn't allow 802.11n and 802.11ac connections to be made. On the other hand, this user (in a post from June) states that he managed to get ac speeds in Arch simply by changing his router settings. Unfortunately, he doesn't detail what changes he made.
I'm hopeful that the driver was simply updated between April and June and that now BCM4360-based wifi adapters can run at 802.11ac speeds, but as it's closed source, I can't check the commits, and have not been able to find any discussion more recent than what I linked above.
Has anyone had success getting 802.11ac speeds with BCM4360-based wifi adapters and the broadcom-wl driver?

I am currently using the BCM4360 (rev 03) in a MacBook Pro. You are correct in that it does not work with the b43 driver. It mostly works with the proprietary wl driver. I am using the broadcom-wl AUR package. I can confirm that 802.11n works. I am connected right now at 324Mbps (3 .11n spatial streams). I have not tried 802.11ac yet. I will soon, so I will report back.
As for the caveats, it doesn't like 802.1X networks very much. To get it working using wpa_supplicant, I have to reload the wl module. Sometimes when I reload it, it comes back as wlan0 instead of wlp3s0. No idea why. Yet, when I tried it with Network Manager on an Ubuntu live environment, it worked fine. YMMV. It always works fine for me at home on a WPA2-PSK network. If I can pin down something with more consistency, I'll let you know.
    For reference:
$ lspci -vnn | grep Network
    03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43a0] (rev 03)
According to kernel.org, BCM4360 could be either 14e4:4360 or 14e4:43a0

  • I have an HP Photosmart 7510 & cannot connect by WiFi, I have tried the support fix with no success.

    Hi
I have an HP Photosmart 7510 & cannot connect by WiFi, I have tried the support fix with no success.
    I have tried the suggested from below;
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02817031&cc=uk&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=507...
I have not tried to assign the static IP address suggested in step 6 on the web link above, I am not that technical & do not fully understand how to perform this task & am surprised HP expect retail client to follow this, if is a bit technical I think you must agree.
Anyway, the WiFi or Wireless blue led is blinking.
If I try to discover my wireless network, it is not displaye like it used , nor are my neighbors, my mobile Samsung Galaxy S displays my network and my neighbors when the phone in placed by my 7510.
When  I try to enter the SSID & key, my 7510 times out without connecting to my router.
My pc is connected directly to my router (Buffalo) and I use a Fujitsu Desktop running Win 7 32bit.
By the way, I have done a "Factory reset" to my 7510 & this did not help at all.
    Can anyone help?
    Is my 7510 faulty?
    Thanks in advance.

I saw your post and forwarded it to the right people for their review. You should hear back from someone shortly via private message on this Forum.

  • USB wifi adapter with Firefox OS?

I recently bought a product called Via APC. It is similar to the Raspberry Pi, only it has Firefox OS pre-installed.
My question is, can I use a USB wifi adapter with Firefox OS? Will it recognize it automatically or will I need to do anything?

I would recommend contacting APC for more information...

  • New Airport Extreme (802.11ac) Support for Encrypted USB Disk

The old Time Capsule and Airport Extreme apparently did not support a filevault2 encrypted USB disk for storing files like an NAS (not talking about a time machine backup).  Does anyone know whether the newly released Airport or Time Capsule now supports the encrypted disk?

I do not think that USB encrypted disks are supported...and would be surprised if they were....but will know for sure late tomorrow.
Will update at that time if no one else has answered before that time.
The fact that Apple still has a USB 2.0 port on the new AirPort products might be a clue as well.

  • Lessons learned replacing ThinkPad HDD with an SSD

Installing a Samsung SSD on my 3 year old ThinkPad W510 was easy. Getting Windows 7 set up took me days.
Here are some lessons learned so you can do it faster.
    Backup
Lenovo Rescue & Recovery will back up files to a USB 3.0 disk but it took 10+ hours and it put several files and folders at the top level. Can it back up multiple disks (HDD and SSD)? Probably not.
    Backup
Windows 7 Backup & Restore doesn’t have those problems backing up data files but when trying to save a disk image to an external drive that’s > 2 TB (with 4K blocks), it runs for a while then fails. The generic error message and event log are not helpful, costing hours of debugging.
    SSD “frozen”
Some web sites say that an SSD will perform better if you fully erase it before installing the OS, but when I tried to do this, the Samsung Magician software said the SSD was “frozen.” Apparently this is a confusing way to say it’s locked from erasure. Magician’s workaround recommendations didn’t help. Magician’s PDF guide has alternate workaround recommendations (like turning of AHCI mode in BIOS) but I didn’t find them soon enough.
Clone the HDD or install fresh?
Restoring Lenovo’s factory disk image onto the SSD (instead of cloning the HDD) fixed accumulated problems but it took several days of work and problem solving. (The HDD’s hidden SYSTEM_DRV partition was full. Did that cause some of the problems?)
    How to over-provision the SSD
“Over-provisioning” boosts an SSD’s sustained write performance by allocating temporary space. The Samsung Magician program will set this up -- but not on a drive with the Lenovo_Recovery “Q:” partition. Moving and resizing C: and Q: with GParted Live didn’t solve this. Instead it made me start all over restoring the factory disk image and the Windows Updates and Lenovo Updates. The solution (thanks, Samsung’s phone tech support!) is to use GParted or Windows Disk Management to shrink the C: partition. All it needs is some unallocated space between partitions anywhere on the SSD. (Samsung recommends 10%.) You don’t have to do anything to allocate that space to the purpose.
    Partition alignment
For speed, you want the partitions aligned on a 4096 byte boundary. GParted will align them on a MiB boundary, which is more than adequate.
    Windows restore points
The Windows installer is supposed to make system restore points but I found it started out with a broken configuration. So open System Properties, the System Protection tab, and check the “available drives” for any drives labelled “... (Missing)”. Turn off “system protection” (restore points) for the “missing” drives, then turn it on for the real C:.
    Faster updates
After restoring Lenovo’s factory disk image, you must iterate installing Windows Updates and Lenovo Updates over and over until there aren’t any more to install. Fortunately this is faster on an SSD than an HDD. Save more time by having only one user account and no password so Windows reboot won’t stop for login. Also watch the taskbar for license dialogs that open up behind other windows but require your clicks to proceed.
    Watch for stuck updates
Lenovo Update quietly gets stuck updating Intel WiFi & WiMax software. The fix is to download those installers from lenovo.com, run them, get an error message that it can’t install over the existing software, uninstall the WiFi & WiMax software, then run the installers again.
    Restore from backup, or not?
At key points, I made system disk image backups of the SSD to the old HDD and tried restoring from a backup after the failed repartitioning experiment. But Windows Backup and Restore won’t restore a system image after booting from the destination drive’s recovery partition nor from the source drive’s recovery partition. Since my backup was on the HDD in the Ultradrive bay, I couldn’t boot from the Rescue & Recovery CD. The workaround was to make a bootable System Repair disk on a 512 MB USB key. Windows Backup and Restore then failed with another meaningless error, “The parameter is incorrect. Code: 0x80070057.” Apparently you have to remove the USB key right before starting the system restore operation but that yielded the error, "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found." I’m not sure if that’s a symptom of removing the USB key or yet another problem with Windows Backup and Restore. Maybe it can’t restore to resized partitions? Windows Backup and Restore failed and burned hours of my time.
Fix the annoying request on bootup?
After you install Windows, all its updates, and Samsung Magician, you can use Magician to adjust system settings for SSD performance. Then you’ll find that Magician needs permission to “make changes to this computer” on every boot. Samsung tech support explained that you can then remove Magician from the startup list via msconfig.
    Optimizations
Recomputing the “Windows Experience Index” might make the OS recognize the boot drive as an SSD and disable defrag for it. This didn’t work for me, so be sure to unschedule defrag. Also use msconfig to remove Digital Line Detect from the startup list and turn on “No GUI boot” (no Windows splash screen). Also use power plans Advanced Settings to never turn off the “hard disk.”
    ThinkPad
Thumbs up. Easy to replace the HDD with an SSD and move the HDD into an Ultradrive caddy. Sturdy. Easy to work on. Well documented. Hardware that I didn't want to replace.
    Microsoft Windows 7
Thumbs down. Buggy, fragile, over complicated, inadequate error messages, painstaking to install, difficult and time consuming to administer, poorly documented, accumulates gunk over time that causes problems, failed backup software, even a fresh install has scary event log errors.
    Lenovo forums & support pages
Very helpful. Sometimes it's good to use Use Google to search them e.g. https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Alenovo.com+"over+provision"
    Samsung 840 EVO SSD
Fine hardware. Some confusions around the Magician software. Great phone tech support. Web support doesn’t work.

I may have confused you: Lenovo provides two tools, 1) one makes DVDs that restore the original out-of-the-box factory image of the entire disk (i.e. System partition, C: + Q: partitions) and 2) Backup and Restore, which is the Lenovo user backup tool that does conventional full disk backups, i.e. with all user customizations, added programs and files. Since my system-generation-to-SSD saga hadn't created the the Q: partition correctly, my only alternative was to create a full up-t-date disk backup with the second Backup and Restore tool that include all the Windows + Lenovo updates, but didn't include extra programs and my user files. This fitted on 5 DVDs, which I will use if ever I reinstall the entire operating system.
Once you get above 100-150 GB of backup volume (I'm at 450 GB right now), the Lenovo Backup and Restore is very slow, so I use the much quicker Windows built-in Backup and Restore program to backup incrementally a system image and all files.

  • What replacement wifi card do i need for iMac 21.5-inch EMC 2308 late 2009 model

Need to replace wifi card. For the life of me, I can't find the exact model # of wifi card I will need. Only that I need "AirPort Extreme (802.11g/n)," but when I search for that, I get all sorts of different shaped and sized cards that meet those specs.

I would try giving them a call at their support number.  They may be able to help both identify the correct part and know where you can get a replacement. In addition, you may also want to consider getting a wireless USB adapter. You would use this instead of the internal card. There are a number of vendors providing these as well.
