Replacing a cloudy grey with a blue sky.

I have Photoshop Elements 5, and Windows XP Home operating system. I am trying to replace a grey sky with a blue sky. I have "the photoshop elements 5 book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby. He describes on pages 301-302 the steps necessary to replace the sky in a photo. I have followed the directions and have been unsuccessful. Obviously, I have missed something important. Part of the sky is changed and part isn't.
Any suggestions??
thanks

I don't have the Kelby book, but here is a way to replace the sky:
1. Rename the Background layer to something else. This is needed to create the transparency in the next step.
2. Use the various selection tools to select the gray sky. The Magic Wand should work well (you may have to Shift-click several times to select it all). Feather the selection 1 or 2 pixels and delete it, replacing the sky with transparent background.
3. Create a new blank layer below the picture layer.
4. Set Foreground & Background colors to blue & white respectively.
5. Select the Gradient Tool with the Foreground-to-Background option. On the blank layer draw a gradient vertically from the top of the sky to the bottom. This will create a natural-looking sky.
Notes:
You will get different results depending on where you start and end the gradient. You can redraw the gradient as many times as you wish on the same layer until you are happy with the result.
You might also try setting the Foreground & Background to dark blue & light blue for the gradient.

It's my house (I wish!)
Is this method similar to Kelby's?

  • Replacing A Cloudy Sky with A Blue Sky

Can anyone suggest an easy way to replace a cloudy sky with a blue sky using Photoshop? I'm doing real estate photography currently, and I have to take photos on a cloudy day. My major problem is when I have trees in the photo that I need to replace with a blue sky. Thanks, Arnold

Those cloudy skies may have helped soften the sunlight and reduced any hash shadows.
Nothing screams bad photo like a photo taken with the sun at the wrong angle, like photos at noon when the bright sun is directly overhead and it produces strong dark shadows on the house you are trying to sell.
There was an article in PetaPixel about how good photos had helped sell a house in days when it had been on the market (with bad photos) for many months.

  • Can I replace my optical drive with internal blu-Ray player?

Basically what the question says. I have a MacBook Pro mid-2009, and I'm wondering if I can replace the optical drive with an internal blu-ray drive.  I would want to be able to read and write to regular CD and DVD still though, that's a must. Also, if there is an internal drive I can put in, will OSX Mavericks support playing a blu-ray movie just because my computer can read it?
Thanks for any knowledge or advice you guys can offer!

    No.

  • Problem with color banding on a blue sky using LR4.3

    Hi,
Recently, I updated my LR3 to LR4.3 and my camera from Olympus EP2 to OMD. So, I am not sure if any of these factors play a role but, I started having severe banding on photos taken in vivid sunny day with a blue sky.
I am not an advanced LR user and, my process of developing photos in LR has always been pretty simple. First, I export RAW format pictures from a card to a hard drive. Then, I do some adjustments and make two jpeg copies from each RAW file.
One copy I in Export dialog box File Settings as a JPEG, Color Space sRGB, 100% quality and another copy I export for web so, I limit to some minimum size without setting any quality reductions.
Again, in the Export dialog box -> File Setting -> check (checkbox) Limit File Size to 300KB to 1MB. In this sample case, file was farely large so, LR did not allow me to save this file in less than 950KB. (Most of my pictures are saved to 400KB just fine)
Here is the link to the photo https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2VnXu6_Q8eB1u_4Zv4pE5aRyWIM3b1U0dQsgxpOe7AA?feat=dir ectlink

I just tried to export a file from my old EP2 with the same settings as I always have done 100% quality and limited size of the file to 450KB using LR4.3. And, I see banding so, this is definately how LR4.3 compresses files vs whatever method of compression was done in LR3.
If you are using the same Export settings as LR3 then it's probably due to PV2012's more aggressive tonal controls. Try the same Export using LR4.4 using a few images adjusted using PV2010 to confirm.

I experimented a bit and found that if I lower quality to 77% and Resize to Fit the photo to 1000X1000, I get the size of the file down to 350KB and good results on my 24" monitor but, will this be enough to print 4X6 if needed?
For best results most printers require 300dpi image files, which would be 1800x1200 for 6" x 4" prints, but you can get reasonable results down to as low as 150ppi (900x600).

If I leave quality to 100% and Resize to 1000X1000 the size of the file increases to 650KB. This will result in page with photo catalog loading longer.
This is the opposite of what you should be doing to maintain the smallest files size. The only reason ro use a 100% Quality JPEG is if you plan on doing further editing to the file. Even when uploading files to a printer a 90% Quality setting is very adequate and will NOT show any difference in the final print. For the Web I have already suggested a JPEG Quality of 50 is adequate. Please read the article at the link Andrew posted and my comments.
Try an Export using sRGB, 50 Quality, 1000x1000 Image Sizing, and Screen Standard Sharpening. Look at the exported images in LR at 1:1 view for visual artifacts such as banding, then post  them on the web and look at them at full-size. They should look identical. If not let us know.

  • White-grey sky to blue with either blue or white/cream colored objects?

    Hi Everyone:
I took up a keen interest in bird photography earlier in the year. So many times when I go out the sky is grey or white.
I have many nice shots of snowy owls, great or snowy egrets and blue herons that would be even better if I had blue sky.
Use PSE 12 for a resource.
So basically my question is in two parts:
Considering I'm a beginner with mostly Lightroom experience:
    a) Blue Herons - Both background and main subject are either blue or have shades of blue. Goal is to look natural, smooth with defined edges, retain proper coloration and well-blended.
    b) Snowy Owls and Egrets are white or cream on a grey-white background.
I seek a nice contrast with well-defined edges.
if I use the smart brush on a snowy owl for instance it takes part of it and turns it also blue!
How  does one accomplish the above?
    Any bird editor tricks?
    Thanks in advance.

    Bruce,
The Alibony technique for sky replacement works best for me:
Watch Lesson 12: Quick Colorless Sky Replacement | Alibony Lessons for Photoshop Elements Episodes | How To Videos | Bli…
Here are my refined notes after watching the video: I posted most of it a few days ago in a reply.
You need 2 pictures: The one that you have with the drab sky which you wish to replace, and a picture of a "good" sky - just blue sky with clouds, nothing else on it. You can take the picture of the sky yourself, or download one from Alibony.
Also, familiarize yourself with the gradient tool, as we will be using this in step #7.
Open your picture (A) (File>open), and open the replacement sky picture (B)
On the sky picture (B), go to Select>all from the menu, then Edit>copy to place it on the clipboard
Go back to your picture (A), then Edit>paste. The new sky (B) should come in on a new layer
With the move tool, use the corner handles to reduce the size of the sky (B) to cover the old sky on (A)
In the layers palette, set the blending mode of (B) to darken
Set the foreground color chip to white
Get the Gradient tool out of the toolbox, and drag a foreground to transparent, linear gradient from below up to the top of the tree line, while holding down the shift key.
With a soft white brush, at reduced opacity, gently paint the horizon a bit, as we want the horizon to be a tad lighter than the rest of the sky.
If necessary, add a few clouds with the Return to Eden set.
TIPS: The Return to Eden cloud brushes are available for download from Adobe Studio Exchange (free)

grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (sorry, I think  it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.
    Thanks for any help!

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

  • Getting a blue sky with a D200? Not cyan, not magenta.

This might a general issue with current digital cameras but particular on HDR images I have trouble producing a blue sky with my Nikon D200 images in Aperture. Most often the light areas of sky are more cyan than blue, changing the color temperature and/or adding magenta usually make things worse.
Adobe Camera Raw seems to do better but is not completely cyan free either. The best way to improve the situation, I have found, is to use the color palette and change the hue of cyan towards blue.
Here are three examples, first Aperture (default except for a some exposure and brightness adjustments), second ACR (same kind of adjustments), and third Aperture with the cyan-hue correction:
    http://homepage.hispeed.ch/kukushka/sky-Aperture.jpg
    http://homepage.hispeed.ch/kukushka/sky-ACR.jpg
    http://homepage.hispeed.ch/kukushka/sky-Aperture-hue-cor.jpg
Is this a common problem of
    a: HDR digital cameras
    b: Aperture
    c: the D200
Is there an easy solution? Is my WB balancing not good enough? (I am considering too always shooting a second photo with a grey card.)

Played around a bit more with the color panel. Moving cyan towards blue and blue a bit towards cyan + reducing both brightness and saturation for cyan and blue produced a more pleasing color (and a rather good match with ACR):
    http://homepage.hispeed.ch/kukushka/sky-Aperture-hue-sat-bri-cor.jpg
It's a bit annoying having to fix up the colors like this. But I guess this where the experience behind Nikon Capture and also ACR enables these applications to provide a better out-of-the-box result.

  • Running iphoto 6.06 some of my images have been replaced by a grey box with a dotted line? How can I rectify this?

Hi I have about 2% of my library replaced by a grey background with a dotted lined box where the image should be?
Any ideas why or how to return my images?

I too have no use for the new Photos.  Trying to sort through 6,000+ photos by dates (some that are incorrect) was very time consuming.  I was looking for a way to reinstall iPhoto from my Time Capsule because I thought that Apple had done away with iPhoto on my computer.  I found this bit of information.  I now have iPhoto back and am not wasting time trying to find photos anymore.  (No I did not have them sorted into albums because I found the Event sort to be perfect for me and those were my 'albums'.)  I don't know anything about the $3.99 a month.  However, I do not put my photos in iCloud and did not transfer my library to iCloud when it asked me.  Hope this helps.
Using iPhoto and Aperture after you migrate to Photos
iPhoto — and Aperture, if you downloaded it — remains on your system in the Applications folder, and you can continue to use it. If you open iPhoto or Aperture after you upgrade to Photos, you’ll be asked if you want to open your library there or in Photos.
Any changes or edits you make in iPhoto or Aperture aren't reflected in Photos. And any changes or edits you make in Photos will not be reflected in iPhoto or Aperture.

  • Replacement of Superdrive with internal Blu-Ray Rewriter?

I have an older Mac (Mid-2007) and I wanted to change the pre-installed Superdrive with this Blu-Ray internal rewriter, http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Arrival-100-Original-Slot-Load-BD-DVD-Rewrite r-UJ-225-PATA-Blu-ray-disk-Burner/168556
But I believe that the Superdrive is 9mm, would this work, (as the drive is 12.7mm).
Any help is appreciated, Thank You

To my knowledge Apple Mac OS X does not support Bluray at all. There may be an aftermarket program you could use but I'm not sure.
Also I doubt you will find a BR drive that will fit inside the space allotted for the Superdrive.

  • Satellite A200-21t CD/DVD drive replacement with an Blu-ray reader

    Hi,
I have a Satellite A200-21t notebook that came with the mat****a UJ-850 drive.
My original drive isn't working anymore...
I'm planning to buy a new one, but i would like one that has a buit in Blu-ray dvd reader.
I heard that not all players work with Toshiba's laptops, so i would like some help to find a bluray drive that would work with my notebook.
    Two drives caught my attention:
the Panasonic UJ-120 and the Sony BC 5500A.
Do these drivers work with Toshibas?
    Does anyone has another suggestion?
Thanks very much for the help!

    Hi
    > Do these drivers work with Toshibas?
I think you will have to test it yourself.
As far as I know Toshiba didnt mention anything about compatible Blueray drives for Satellite A200.
The point is that not all drives are compatible due to different master/slave/c-sel settings.
Using not compatible ODD you will get an IDE #1 error message and the drive will not be recognized by BIOS.
But I read here in the forum that some guys managed to upgrade the own Toshiba units with a blue ray drive
Therefore Im thinking that youve got a good chance to upgrade it.

  • How do i create a layer of blue to add to existing image to have a blue sky?

Adobe PhotShop Elements 3.0 for Mac OS X+ Mac Mini
I am a real estate photographer. most agents want a blue sky rather than the grey. What procedure would you recommend to creat this?
    1. a layer of blue? if so how do i create one then add it to existing image?
    2. is there a brush or paint bucket or other tool that can be used to fill in the sky area with blue on existing image.
    Thanks
    Hank of California

    Hank,
    1. Open the layers palette and also the color swatches palette
    2. Duplicate the background layer, shut off the visibility of the background layer be clicking on its eye icon.
We shall be working on the background copy layer, which should be the active layer, and is denoted in blue in the layers palette. In case it is necessary to start over, one can delete the layers which have been generated, proceeding from the original layer.
    3. Use the magic wand tool. Have contiguous and use all layers checked. Click on the "old" gray sky. In case this tool does not pick up a portion, hold down the shift key and click again.
    4. You shall see a selection as denoted by "marching ants."
    5. Go to Layer>new>Layer via copy. Hold down the ctrl key and click on this layer in the layers palette, making this active
    6. Select a blue color from the swatches palette (foreground color)
    7. Use the paintbucket tool to fill in the "new" blue sky
    8. You can adjust the opacity of the new sky layer with the slider in the layers palette
There are other ways to do this as well, but this method has served me extremely well. To give it a really nice look, there are available cloud brushes for free download via Adobe Studio Exchange.

  • HT4889 Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive?

Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive? Should I use Carbon Copy or does apple have a better untility to do this?
I can't get my current system drive (OSX 10.8.3) to start on the first try. I always have to shut down and restart again to finally see the Apple logo.
Have used disc utility to repair the disc and permissions several times and that works. The next time I boot up, it works fine and I get the apple logo, but then the second time I boot up, it's back to the blank screen again and it only boots after the second try.  I have tried this repair three different times now always with the same result. Works right the first try (after the repair) then from the second time on it doesn't work. I just get the white screen until I reboot a second time.
Thinking I should change drives but what's the easist and best way to move everything over to the new drive so it will boot correctly with all my data on it. This is the system drive for a Pro Tools 10HD setup. MacPro 3,1 with 16 gigs ram and OSX10.8.3 on it.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

  • Screen Freeze With Light Blue Tint

    Hi,
I bought a refurbished 15" MacBook Pro from the Apple Store last August (2011 model, I think, running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3) and it's been fine up until the past week. Twice now, when the computer has been asleep and I've woken it up, the screen has frozen and has a slightly bleached out and bluish appearance and, unable to see the cursor when I move my finger on the trackpad, I've had to reboot using the power button. This seems to fix it, but I'm worried that it might indicate an ongoing or more serious problem.
Just to clarify, what I see is not a blank, pale blue screen, but the screen as it looked just before the computer went to sleep (background picture, any windows I had open), with a bleached-out, bluish appearance.
I can rule out accidental damage (it hasn't been dropped or had anything spilled on it, etc) but it has coincided with a problem I had with the MagSafe Power Supply. While I was using the computer last week with the supply plugged in, I looked down to notice the insulating layer next to the metal L-connector had split, exposing the wires, some of which had frayed. I switched off and disconnected the supply immediately, but can't say for sure how long the damaged supply was in use before I noticed the problem with it. Neither can I say for sure that the two issues are related, but this bleached-out blue screen problem first arose that day, although the second time it happened (this morning) I was using the replacement power supply which is intact.
Has anyone else experienced this? Luckily, my computer is still within warranty, so I'll call the helpline or visit a Genius Bar, but any other advice would be very much appreciated.

It's possible that it has affected to your computer, but it has nothing to do with the blue tint. Respecting to this problem, the first thing I recommend you is to reinstall OS X, holding Command and R keys while your computer is starting, so all the OS X files will be reinstalled and it should fix the problem if it's software related.
If it doesn't work, take the computer to the Apple Store because it could be a hardware issue. I have seen problems with some computers turning them on after sleep, but the blue tint isn't as normal as this problem
