Replacing a dvd burner

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-6c54nr, Windows 7 64 bit. I have some experience with desktops but I have never opened up a laptop.  My dvd burner needs replacing, I'm told it will have instructions, hopefully they are good. Any pointers? Thanks.

    Hi,
Yes you can, you need something like this to hold the HDD (or SSD):

  • MBP july 2009, replacing the dvd burner UJ 868

Any suggestion about with what replace the uj 868? is the 898  ok or please something else?

You should be able to replace that drive with any slimline (Notebook Style) "Slot loading" CD/DVD burner available, which there is a very small selections.
All modern CD/DVD drives have the exact same connections, power and data, in the exact same physical place on the drive case.
But it must be the same type of drive. Type meaning the data interface, SATA or PATA. More then likely yours is a SATA as PATA went out of use 6+ years ago.

I am planning on replacing the DVD burner which shipped with my W520 (4270CTO) with a Blu-ray burner.  Evidently not all W520s ship with the same drives.

  • Choosing a DVD burner replacement

I would like to ask Steve Grisetti (and Chuck) and other members of this Forum to assist me in replacing the original DVD burner (internal) On this Dell Dimension 4700 5 year old computer. (8x21w61, Windows XP) The  cable is a ribbon cable that connects to both dvd drives. I am not clear because there are so many configurations as to what to buy. Circuit City is one good source as it seems and I would like to find a good burner fo $40-$60. Here is one (SATA) that I have looked at. Please include any good links that could/would assist me. Thanks   http://http://www.circuitcity.com/applications/searchtools/item_upsell.asp?EdpNo=4665188

I would not have a Sony burner at the top of my list, based on tests, where they were never a top-contender for a podium place, contrary to LG, Samsung and possibly Pioneer. Anyway, since they are so cheap nowadays, it does not really matter what the price is, it is more about compatibility with different formats, reliability and burn results. From that perspective in PATA burners, my preference would definitely be Samsung.

  • Qosmio G10 DVD Burner replacement

My DVD Burner failed out and needs to be replaced. It's a UJ-831S. I bought the same one but I got a CD-ROM Error at start up. I tried this new CD-ROM on another laptop (Toshiba Satellite 2800-300) and it worked fine. I think I have a problem with the configuration of my DVD Burner (c-select, master....). Do you know if can change the firmware of my DVD Burner ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alain

A released firmware that is BRAND specific (like the one I have attached... (TOSHIBA OEM)) is made to run on a Toshiba model and has been configured with the correct Cable/Master/Slave settings. As you might already know, notebook CD-drives control the required CSM settings through the Firmware that is programmed on them rather than through a "jumper setting" like on desktop versions.
(The other improvements that are mentioned in the firmware documentary are irrelevant for us,... the important note that was meant to be read is the COMPATIBILITY statement to the G10 requirements)
I made several drives work on different notebooks after applying similar firmware upgrades like this one, and (to me) this would be the normal way to go in case I bought a drive with different settings than my notebook's requirements.
The only difficult part in the whole procedure is "WHERE to find a notebook?" that has access to the CD-drive BEFORE you apply the new firmware with the changing CSM setting. In our case, he does have access to the drive on a friends notebook, so he could easily apply the upgrade on his own.
I don't want to encourage anybody to do something he is not familiar with, therefore (for the sake of remaining in safe territories and keep the adrenalin levels normal during the flashing process) the best would be exchanging the drive with a "compatible manufacturer pre-flashed with correct settings" drive.
The procedure I describe should work, but is only meant to be followed by a person, who is taking up ALL RESPONSIBILITIES ON HIS OWN to proceed with this. My part in this thread is only to discuss and explain the process (and concept) of using this specific firmware upgrade that also changes the CSM.

  • Replace dvd burner in a macbook pro 1,1

    good morning,
I need to replace a DVD Drive in a Macbook Pro 1,1 A1150 and was wondering if there was a way to put a DL burner in it as I will have it apart anyway.  The current drive loads and reads disks but does not eject them correctly.  Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Yes it works great doesn't it.  I replaced mine the day I got it.  I purchased the parts first and then bought the mac.  I got 2 intel 320's 600gb hard drives.  I purchased an optibay and then put both of the hard drives in the macbook pro and then did a raid 0, so now I have 1.2tb of space.  I also purchased 16gb of memory for it, so that couple with the quad-core i7 2.3Ghz processor it's blazing fast, it starts up in 7 seconds.  I love it.

My replacement MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875 drive has stopped burning cd's in iTunes 10.  The error msg is: "The attempt to burn a disc failed.  The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry".  When attempting to burn files from the finder I got the msg:  "The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
Is there any hope for this drive? It hasn't been used very much.

    ust a note of interest.
You don't mention the brand of CD and DVD's you use.
Remember there is a huge difference in the Media you buy and choose.
There is also a big difference in the Software you use to burn with.
There are several schools of thought on th entire subject of burning period.
Apple burners are historiclly very picky, and do not like CHEAP Media.
Here is a good guide to use, it is for DVD but I would use like brands with CD's

  • Satellite 1730CDT, DVD burner replacement

    Hi,

  • Can I replace the DVD drive with a BlueRay Burner?

I have the HP Pavillion a6647c. I assume so but don't know if it takes more power. I learned from an ealier lost I can't really upgrade my video card as my power supply isn't strong enough. 230W I think.
Just incase some knows this answer too......my goal is to burn my HD movies off the hard disk and on to blue ray disks. Currently the playback of the movies on the PC is a bit jerky and I've been told by Canon I need a better video card. Will a movie I burn to a blueray also be slightly jerky on my TV through my blueray player or is it just when played on the PC?
    Thanks

Yes,  you can update the DVD burner to a Blu-ray buner.  A movie that you have burned to a Bluray disc should play smoothly on your Blu-ray player. Your PC and your Blu-ray player are apples and oranges.
    Kind regards,

  • My DVD burning problems solved....here's what I did.

Like some of you, I was having MAJOR problems burning DVDs. My initial setup was a dual 2.0 ghz G5 purchased in July of last year, so it came with a 8x burner and iLife '04 (iMovie 4.0.1 and iDVD 4.0.1). Seeing as how I have 1.5gigs RAM and a fairly new system running 10.4.3, I didn't think I was going to have any problems burning DVDs....
    HA.
Nothing worked right......a 1-hour long project burned for more than 8 hours without finishing, or iDVD would quit for no reason, or the burn would fail. I noticed that Terminal said that during these burns it was only burning at 4x even though 47x was requested. Chapters were not working. Applecare was not helpful, only suggesting that I try to burn under a new user, and then call them back. That didn't work either.
I probably took the lazy man's way out, but I decided this waste of time was unacceptable. I went out and purchased a 16x SuperDrive Pioneer DVR-110D replacement from MCE for $92, and upgraded to iLife '05 for another $79. I installed the drive myself (VERY easy with the included instructions), and tried the new setup under a newly created user.....
PERFECT burning every time. Not only that, but Terminal showed a requested burn speed of 16x and a burn speed of 16x. A two-hour project is now burning in less than 8 minutes. Multiplexing still takes time, but it's less than 1 hour!
On an interesting side note: when I try to burn under my regular user name, I STILL get an burning error (says image not complete, or incomplete....something like that). But under the user name created just for burning I have no problems. The chapter problem was solved when I stopped putting a chapter marker at the very beginning of my iMovie projects, since iDVD automatically puts one in called "Beginning," which you can change to anything you want.
    Maybe this will help others.....
    Dual 2Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5 gigs RAM, iMovie 5.0.1, iDVD 5.0.1

it was only burning at 4x even though 47x was requested.
That's a issue discussed in the past.
It turns out that 8X DVD burning means about 47X CD burning - you were requesting 8X DVD but only got 4X DVD burning.
I haven't seen it discussed anymore so maybe Apple got around to eliminating that 'quirk' in terminology.
I suspect some of the early 8x DVD burners didn't perform as advertised. I'm glad your new 16X burner is working for you.

  • G5 DVD burner error message? Help please?

I get this error message when I try burning a 1gb quicktime movie to dvd on my pre installed standard burner. Thanks in advance
the link below is a screenshot of the error

The error "internal target failure" appears on PCs using this drive as well, so it appears that it's not a Toast specific error.
However, in my browsing, no one seemed to be able to tell if it was a true hardware failure of the drive, or if it was caused by poor quality media.
I'd try other brands of media and a lens cleaner before flashing the firmware. And, if you do decide to flash the firmware, the current, official firmware for that drive is here. The link in MLCinma's post contains hacked (region free) firmware and is outdated in any event.
Let us know what brand of media you're using and what speed you're burning at.
The DVR-106D has had lots of reports of failures, so it could very well be the drive. At least a replacement DVR-111D will only cost you about $40 - $50.
