Replacing a DVD Drive

I posted this in the Tecra forums and received no replies.  I have two of these rascals and was wanting to swap the drives to see if one was defective.  Every laptop I have messed with, the drives will slide right out w/o any force if all of the correct screws are removed.
I have a Tecra M7-7311 that I need to get the DVD drive out of.  I have looked thru the user guide but cannot find a schematic of the correct way to remove the actual drive.  I found one screw, but the drive doesn't seem to want to come out easily - so I am assuming I have missed one or more screws somewhere else.  Can anyone help me?

I've just got a line drawing to look at, but it looks like the latch is as you described, a small thing at the back of the drive.

  • How can I get a replacement internal DVD drive?

I bought a refurbished Toshiba P55t-A5202 a few months ago.  The internal DVD drive seems to be failing and doesn't always recognize dual-layer DVDs.  Some DVDs recognize and play fine.  Others aren't even detected and the system thinks no disk is in the drive.  I would like to replace the opical drive.  I am comforable opening up the sytem and swapping the drive, I just don't know where to buy the replacement part.
Does anyone know who to contact about getting a replacement internal DVD drive?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Apple may not have the replacement discs at this point, but it's worth a try. You could try giving Apple a call and see if they have them available. If they do, they will send them to you for a fee.
You will need the serial number of the iBook when you call.

  • A quick question concerning replacing the DVD drive in a HP pavillion dv6-2057cl

I need to replace the DVD drive in this dv6 and I am wondering if there is any wiggle room when it comes to the replacement drive.  Can I use another HP disc drive with a similar model # or am I restricted to the "identical" drive?
    Some quick info follows:
    OS = Windows 7 home premieum (32bit)
The drive pulled out of the laptop:
    Super Multi DVD Rewriter
    MODEL: GT20L
    FW        : DC05
    HW       : A2
    TYPE    : AMCK702

    HP mPC PN : 461646-6C2
    S/N :
    {Removed for privacy}
    MANUFACTURED : OCTOBER 2008
I have found a replacement with the same "Model #" and same "HP mPC PN" however it was manufactured in 2009 and I do not know if the placement of the SATA connection on the rear of the drive matches up or not.
    Any help is much appreciated!!!!!!

It looks like the part number is the same. As long as the part number is the same, it is essentially the same part and should work without any issues. The only time that part may not work is if the part number is different. If any part is different from another part (firmware, hardware, etc.), it will have a different part number. As long as 461646-6C2 is the same on both, there shouldn't be any issue with replacing the drive.

  • Replacing Internal DVD Drive with HDD in Mac Mini?

Has anyone tried replacing the internal DVD drive with a hard drive, giving you TWO internal hard drives? I think you need a cable to match up the SATA connectors. Then you could use a USB external enclosure for the DVD.
    Thanks.

Very interesting, thanks el Duque. Too bad MCE doesn't make a carrier for the Mac Mini. I wonder if one for a Macbook Pro can be easily modified to fit?
I have just learned that the SATA connector on the logic board for the optical drive in Macbooks and the Mini is called a "Slim-SATA" connector. Instead of the power side of the connector having 15 pins, it only has 6, with both types of connectors having a standard 7-pin data side. Both power and data hook-ups are achieved in a single connector -- a power side and data side.
Since the ports on 2.5" hard drives are "standard" SATA connectors, AND they don't match up to the logic board's connector location (like with the connector location on the optical drive), a cable is needed to run between the HDD and the logic board connector.
Unfortunately, such a cable is not available -- yet. Instead, one has to be fabricated out of two types of SATA cables -- a Molex 4-pin to SATA 15-pin power cable and a combination cable that looks like this:
    http://www.byteccusa.com/product/SATA/SATA-XP118/SATA-XP118.htm
The fabrication involves replacing the molex 4-pin power end of the combi-cable with the SATA power end of the molex 4-pin to SATA power cable (cutting and soldering). The BIG question now is whether a HDD will work with just the two-wire power cable (of the combi-Sata cable) that an optical drive normally uses? Anyone know if it will? Thanks.

    Hello clevermom,
I understand you are looking to replace the optical drive in your HP TouchSmart IQ504 Desktop PC. The optical drive you are looking for is no longer supplied by HP, but I do have information that will allow you to get it elsewhere. The optical drive is "8X SuperMulti Slimslot SATA interface DVD-ROM optical drive - Form factor 12.7mm height, read all CD-ROM medai and DVD-RAM discs", and I have fouhd several available on the internet by searching by the Part Number 467613-ZH1.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting this question on the HP Forums. Enjoy your weekend!

  • Cost to replace internal DVD drive?

(I tried posting this as a reply to a related question No luck.)
DVD's eject from my built-in drive after ~30 seconds, although a blank DVD does not. CDs appear to work okay. I've tried resetting PRAM and SMS, but to no avail. I've read other related threads and see no solutions other than:
    1) have Apple replace the drive
    2) buy an external drive along the lines of Re: What external read / write DVD drive is best for imac
My sense from other discussions is that #1 is not worth it. I have no clue how much this would cost.  Can anyone tell me?
Also, does anyone have current recommendations for an external drive replacement?  (I do know from other threads that the Apple external superdrive is a no-no for my machine.)

Not all optical drives are Mac compatible.
Most Mac compatible drives you will only find to be purchased online.
Here are two on Amazon.com that are cheap and Mac compatible

Here's another source for Mac compatible optical drives. These are better quality optical drives.
These are also tray loading drives.

  • Replacement CD/DVD Drive for 2008 Mac Pro?

I need to purchase a new optical drive for my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-Core desktop computer. I checked OWC, but they're out of stock. I currently have a Samsung SH-S222L, which I absolutely hate–mainly because the heads access the drive every 5 minutes or so. Very, very annoying.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Psst ! Here's a little tip for you. The drive used in Mac Pro's isn't exclusive to the mac. It's an Optiarc model
and I believe you can use any cd/dvd burning drive with an ATAPI plug on the back, Pc or Mac, and chances are it'll work fine,  I used a Lite-On drive I snagged from a dying PC in my Mac pro 3,1 as my 2nd dvd drive
and it worked fine for a few years. Replacing it isn't that hard either. There are guides on Youtube or other places that show you how to do it. Just remember to remove the little lip on the front of the dvd drawer before you install it.  I don't know about specific brands, but Pioneer seems fine, and I'm sure there are others that are fine, too. macsales might help you out. I know what it's like having to haul your Mac pro into your local Mac place--a pain in the butt, right? and then you have to wait...and wait...
I think you can can do this....
    good luck

  • T43 Replacement CDR/DVD Drives P/N:39T2529 ASM P/N:39T2528

I need to replace my T43's  CD-R/DVD drive, as it literally fell apart on me.  I looked at the part number sticker on the drive and it has this at the top of the sticker :
    FRU P/N :  39T2529    ASM P/N : 39T2528    REV :   101
What does the ASM P/N mean?  Does it mean the T43 can also use the 39T2528 drive also?
I found a drive with that part number that is a recordable DVD player and would like to replace my broken CDR/DVD drive with that instead if it will work.
    Thanks

    Hi dumpsterdivin62,
I don't think it matters, the service parts page mentions the P/N as compatible for A30p:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/migr-39574.html

ok i know the easyest way to get past a now aging DVD drive is to just buy an external one (LaCie 1st choice).
BUT why do i want something else to clutter my desk!
does anyone know of slot loading internal DVD burners that i can upgrade to?

surly its a matter of getting the right sized burner + what plug in interface it used and your done?

Two places you can check: macsales.com and mcetech.com.
It's possible that iFixit.com carries replacement parts for your model, but I'm not sure.

  • How to replace a DVD drive on G4

I have a G4 running OSX 10.4.9 purchased in 2003 with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105. It has not mounted for some time now, any discs either CD or DVD are not seen by the system. The hardware profile knows it is there (hence how I know what type it is) but neither Finder or iTunes recognizes anything put into the drive. Neither complains, they just don't acknowledge any discs entered.
I've tried a DVD cleaner just to rule out a dirty lens so I assume I'll simply have to replace the drive.
I've added a PCI USB2 card and extra hard drives so I'm not at all uncomfortable with replacing it myself. However I don't know how to remove the drive. It is encased in metal box (carrier?) with the power cord entering into the case in the back. I only see a couple of screws that don't seem to be the only thing holding the case on.
Can anyone direct me to instructions on how to remove the drive?
    TIA

    Hi
Installation intructions, including a QuickTime movie in most cases, can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/diy/
You'll need to select your exact G4 model in the drop down list box.
If you're unsure of which model it is, the following articles should help:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739
If it was purchased new in 2003 it's probably a FW800 or MDD 2003.

I don't know about their other prices but they want about twice as much for a 250GB 5400rpm western digital hard drive as I paid for the one installed in my MacBook Pro. It usually pays to google around for best price.
