Replacing a DVD-Rom on a satellite S1410-S104

Can anyone advise me on how to replace the DVD-Rom on my SAT S1410 with a DVD\CD-RW.
I had hoped it would simply be a case of unclipping something and it would slide out like many other laptop models, but as yet I can't get the old dvd-rom out.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Scott

In fact you have a screw on bottom side of your satellite, but you have to remove the keyboard to have access to another screw. To remove the keyboard you must pull the plastic sheet on the top of keyboard, when you do that you see another tree screws, you must remove this screws and lift the keyboard.
And finally you see another screw who fix the CD drive to the chassis, remo9ve the screw pull the drive out and replace the drive, mount everything and voil.
Not easy but ...

  • How to replace CD/DVD-Rom on Satellite Pro 2100

    Hello,
My dvd-rom drive in the laptop is old and broken, now I have here a another dvd-rom drive but I don't know how to remove the old dvd-rom without removing all parts of my laptop. Is there some service manual how to replace the dvd-rom drive?

    Hi
Im not 100% sure about the CD/DVD drive replacement on this notebook but I assume the procedure is very similar to another notebooks drives.
Mostly the ODD is secured with the one screw at the bottom of the unit.
You will have to remove this screw to pull out and to swap the drive.
But be careful and dont do it if you have no experience!!!
By the way, not all drives are compatible and supported because of the master/slave/c-sel settings. If you dont know what drives are compatible you should ask the ASP in your country for a advice!!!

  • DVD-Rom drive in Satellite C655-S5128 not working properly in Windows 8

I recently upgraded my system from Windows 7 to Windows 8. However, the DVD-Rom drive after the upgrade no longer works properly -- it now treats the pre-recorded disk as if it was completely blank. I tried reinstalling the Toshiba Disc Creator, but that did not work.
    Any solution?

You apparently did not use the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant in upgrading to Windows 8.  See HERE for DVD and Disk Creator problems occurring during the upgrade and solutions.

  • G3 Pismo DVD-ROM Problem

The DVD-ROM (Model M7931, Apple P/N 661-2244) in my G3 Pismo is not working properly. When a CD or DVD is input the drive spins, but makes slow & fast spin speed noises. Then it quits without reading the CD or DVD. The lens is clean & the drive appears in the System Profiler. When I replace the DVD-ROM drive with a CD-ROM drive (M73888), the CD drive reads a CD, so apparently the electronics within the G3 are OK.
I've read in forums that these drive have been problematic. Has anyone attempted a repair of the drive or know what might be the problem? The Service Manual troubleshooting doesn't suggest much, except replace. Since the drive is inop & possibly need to be trashed, I'm not adverse to trying to disassemble & attempt a repair. I can continue to use the CD-ROM drive.
I doubt that I will replace the DVD-ROM because used ones appear to cost $50+ & new ones about $100+. Is there an alternate (cheaper $) PC drive that could be used?
     Cheers, Tom

It's fixed. WD40 to the rescue.
I was considering swapping the Apple drive with a PC drive (see first link below, Plan B), but thought I would do a little troubleshooting (Plan A).
I opened the drive tray from it's enclosure. Using a #0 jeweler's Phillips screwdriver, I removed the metal cover plate screws (5). Then removed the screws (3) holding the motor/plate assembly. Carefully lifted the motor assembly upward at about a 45 degree angle (flex cables were attached). Looking at the side, there was about a 1mm gap between the motor & the plate. Using the plastic nozzle on a can of WD40, sprayed a small amount of lubricant. Let it sit for a few minutes & rotated the spindle. Reassembled everything.
I inserted a CD, didn't hear any spinning noise & the CD icon appeared on the screen. Repeated with a DVD. Both were being read. Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How to make the CD/DVD drive compatible on Satellite 5000-204

    Hi all,
I see a thread on replacing CD/DVD drive on this notebook, but it was closed, so i write this post.
The most of recent unit is "cable select" type and will not be recognized from many Toshiba notebook.
To solve that you must search a drive for which you can found a firmware update that change it to be "reverse cable select" type, as Nec or Optiarc
If you buy a drive that can't be recognize (like me) read below.
I succesfully replaced the DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit with a Pioneer DVR-KD08 DVD writer.
This unit is a "cable select" type (as most other recent unit) so it can't be recognise by this notebook (and many other Toshiba models). The solution is to connect pin 45 and 47 together on the drive or on the connector adapter (this second solution is simpler).
If you watch the drive from behind these pins are the second and third from the left on the upper row of pin of the connector.
In the connector adapter it's simpler to connect these pin (with care) with a solder iron directly on the circuit board.
Obviously on the circuit board the pins are the second and third from the right.
After this the unit will recognize ok.

    Hi buddy
First of all thank you for participation in the forum its always nice to have users who shares the own experience and knowledge.
Thanks you also for this info how to make the CD/DVD drive compatible.
But to be honest Im a little bit skeptical because there is a chance that the drive could be damage during this procedure.
So everyone could do this but only at the own risk!!!
Usually the compatible drives can be found in the user manual and it would be useful taking a look into the user manual before buying an NOT compatible drive ;)
    Cheers mate

Driver files needed for the following Sony dvd/cd rom drive:  "dvd-rom  ddu 1615".
The dvd-rom drive will not read any type of dvd or cd.

Where can I find driver files for this dvd rom?
    Thanks,

    Hello Denise,
    Welcome to the Sony Community.
All of the Sony internal optical drives are plug & play with Windows so no drivers are required for detection in your PC. If you are having issues getting your drive detected then please try the following:
    • Ensure the Sony drive is set as a secondary master by itself. If you have another disc burner or a zip drive on the same IDE cable, please separate them.
    • Ensure you have the latest Service pack for your Windows operating system and any other updates for your system installed.
    service, storage support email
    • Please remove your secondary IDE channel from the Device Manager.
If the issue is still not resolved, service may be required. You may contact the Sony Storage support team by e-mail at: [email protected] for further information.
    Thank you for your post.

  • Format iMac from external dvd-rom

My DVD-ROM kicked the bucket today & to top it off, my AppleCare expired end of 2009. Replacing the ROM is out of the question (for now) as I was quoted approximately $500 for a replacement.
I need to re-install Leopard & would like to know, is it possible to connect my other iMac & use it's DVD-ROM drive to re-install Leopard?

Is there anywhere online I can buy spare parts for my iMac?
The Apple service centre wants to charge me $400 to replace the DVD-ROM, and $150 for labour.
I don't know if these people ship to your country, but they have reasonably-priced parts:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Mac-Parts/iMac-20%22-2.16-GHz
They also have step-by-step instructions for a number of replacement operations:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iMac-Intel-20-Inch-EMC-2105-and-21 18-Optical-Drive-Replacement/1090/1
WARNING: An iMac can be a little tricky to work on. For example, there are some parts that have to be coated with heat grease during assembly. Another thought: that disk drive is probably not specific to Apple. If you can find a competent computer repair shop, you could refer them to those repair instructions and let them do the replacement.

Does anyone know how to replace the DVD Burner in a Toshiba Satellite P205-S769?  I am assuming that I need to remove the keyboard in order to get to the drive.  Is this similar to other Satellite models where I could simply remove the keyboard securing strip?

    Hi Breck,
in my opinion there is no way to upgrade the internal CD Drive to a DVD Drive because the CD Drive is fixed mounted and could only replaced by the same model!
Only an external solution like USB or PCMCIA would fit!
    Sorry!

  • Satellite L505D-S5983 - CD/DVD-ROM issue

    Hello.
I have a Windows 7 Home Edition laptop that will not boot from the CD-DVD-ROM drive. Under normal circumstances, I know that if the boot order is right, the computer should automatically boot from the CD. However, it instead refuses to acknowledge any bootable disks I have in there at all. I have tried from Super Fdisk bootable CD to Linux Mint 9 Live boot CD version i386. My computer seems to just skip over the CD_ROM entirely and immediately boot from the hard drive.
However, it can still read CDs and DVDs perfectly. I have no problem burning items on a CD or pulling items off. I also have no problem playing games or movies that require a CD or DVD.
    Solutions I have attempted:
Changing the boot order. Nothing changed.
    Creating new CDs. Nothing Changed.
Gently cleaning the drive. Nothing changed.
Pressing the left and right arrow keys during the POST. Though it did throw me into the screen in which I choose what I want to boot, my only option was Windows 7 in the end.
Checking the Device Manager. My drive is working perfectly according to my computer.
Changing drivers. Updating wasn't possible as I already had the latest drivers, rolling back wasn't an option because there wasn't anything to roll back to, and disabling and enabling changed nothing.
Is there anything else I can do? I'm trying not to buy a new drive, as I'm short on money. I'll do it if I have to, but if I don't have to...
Thanks for any help or advice.

  • Satellite A200-23P - DVD-rom mechanic not working

I am sorry for my English in advance this topic! - Thanks
I have very big problem with my DVD writer (rom).
I bought SAT A200-23P three weeks ago.
The OS Win VISTA was installed. DVD-rom worked good.
If I installed Win XP to second partition on my HDD (before I make install disc with driver for sata disc in nlite) and installed all drivers and utilities for Toshiba notebook, I found that my DVD-rom does not respond while I press eject button.
DVD mechanic does not respond for eject in the XP and not even in BIOS!
Interesting is, DVD mechanic is detecting in BIOS, is detecting in XP, operating system XP votes - DVD mechanic working correctly - its fable.
However, if I installed XP on second partition, Win Vista does not load :(
I don't have a second chance for second selection (Vista and XP).
I have now XP only, even if Vista is on first partition - I didnt delete it.
Do you think the DVD-rom is HW or SW problem?
I think, seeing that DVD-rom not respond in BIOS - HW error.
But is very strange, if I install XP from DVD mechanic and close then is done, DVD-rom not working ... : (
If I open it manually and insert the disc, DVD not working (led diode not blink, just if I turn computer off, led blinked once).
    PLS help me somebody -
    THANKS!

    Hi Michal
Your issue is very strange I mean the CD/DVD drive issue
Fact is that the CD/DVD drives eject function should functions no matter what OS was installed on your notebook. It has nothing to do with your software on the HDD.
So I wonder why the eject button works with Vista and not with preinstalled XP OS ?:|
My only plausible explanation is that sometimes there is a loose connection between the notebook and the drive. At the other hand the issue could be related to the hardware problem too
As you see its not easy to say whats wrong exactly we can only speculate.
Now some details about your dual OS installation.
You cannot choose between the Windows XP and Vista because the Vista boot manager was overwritten during the Win XP installation.
This happened to me too. I have installed Win XP on my Satellite and was not able to start Vista.
The solution was easy; I have used another original Vista DVD (from my friend) and booted from this DVD. The Vista has renewed the boot manager and then I was able to boot the Vista.
Then I have downloaded the tool called Easy BCD.
This tool can change the settings the Vista boot manager. I have edited it and inserted a new Windwos XP OS entry.
    Thats it!

  • Replace CD-rom trayloading with DVD-Rom?

im new to mac. Adopted an old mac (G3 tray loading) from a friend. Found out it doesn't have a DVD-Rom. So I started to wonder if it is possible to replace the CD-Rom tray loading with a DVD-rom slot loading.
After surfing the net for ages I still haven't found the anwnser to my question. The only thing discovered is that it will fit, if it works is an other issue, Can someone help me with this?
    Thanks
    JP

If you mean to use a slot-loading DVDROM drive from the later slot-loading iMac, it works but it does not fit. I'll explain...
At the back of the tray-loading CDROM drive is a thin adapter board. The board converts the drive's connection to an unusual small 50-pin ribbon cable which goes to the motherboard.
At the back of the slot-loading DVDROM drive is a similar adapter board. However, it converts the drive's connection to a different type of ribbon cable, I think it's the more typical 40-pin connector.
You can remove and swap the two adapter boards. Unfortunately, the board from the tray-loader fits backwards (up-side-down) on the slot-loader. Therefore, it sticks out on the right side and does not fit in the case. The screws that secure the board in place also no longer fit. However, it does work that way (it just does not fit in the case).
I know it works because I have a tray-loader iMac that is no longer +in its case+. I use it with an external display because my analog video board failed a long time ago. When my CDROM drive also failed, I bought a slot-loader drive on eBay. Since my iMac is not constrained by the case, it works. It reads DVDs fine. However, it will not play DVD movies; I have installed DVD Player and third-party software, but DVD movies will not play. I'm sure it's a limitation of the video hardware.
