Replacing a MSI 6188 motherboard

My daughters IBM NetVista went belly up -- would not turn on, pwr supply will run for about two seconds and then shutdown. This plus that familiar "burned electronic component" smell from the motherboard. Futzing with connections, lots of retrying this and that -- still dead, so it looks like I need a new one. :(
The IBM unit had an MSI 6188 mother board (1GHz pent III, three PCI slots, MicroATX form factor). I am trying to repair on college student budget -- IBM replacement is too many $$.
Can I drop in an MSI 6368? Same formfactor, socket 370, same onboard sound and graphics. I figure I can re-use everything else.

Yes, but you will most likely need to reinstall windows anyway.
I suggest you be sure the PSU is not fried since you don't want to blow the new board as well.
Personally I would try and find an MS6315 v5.0 or some other i815 based board, they run much better and more reliably (except the o/b VGA sucks even more than the VIA PLE133) but it has an AGP port.

MSI Ti4800SE and MSI KT4V motherboard incompatible?

Yesterday I bought an MSI Ti4800SE to replace a GeForce2. It booted up fine and Windows detected it and installed the drivers. However, on rebooting, the monitor went blank and there was a series of beeps.
The computer would not start. I tried taking out all the other cards and tried the video card in 2 other computers but all I got was the beeps. I took the card back and got a refund as they had no more in stock.
Is the video card incompatible with the motherboard for some reason? Did I somehow cause the card to die? Should I buy another or will the same thing happen again?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd like to make a few comments. The first thing I noticed was the placement of the AGP slot. MSI has shifted it closer to the first PCI slot, and as a result, eliminates the space between them. This gap came in real handy for room for a Thermal Take HSF that would normally block that first PCI slot. Also, for air flow and ease to work around it in general, it was a nice feature. I say ditch the ACR slot and move the PCI slots down.
In terms of placement of components, I actually prefer to have the ATX power connector where it is. This way you can wrap the power cable over and around the power supply, keeping it away from other power and IDE cables. Placing it on the opposite side of the board near where the floopy connector is going to be will only get in the way of those cables and hard drive and such. Also real quick, I don't like the way they moved around the internal audio connectors, but this may be an early design.
Another thing to note like others have is the decision to use a heat-sink-fan combination on the northbridge instead of the nice silver passive heatsink. While I prefer the silver HS, I can deal with the HSF, although I have found that they can blow out easily after maybe a year of use or less, which can be a pain to replace. Finally, it looks as if we are going to either have to buy a new case, or perform a serious mod to the rears of our current ones, because with the way nVIDIA has changed the standard setup of the rear external connectors by adding in Firewire and more Ethernet controllers, as well as more audio ports like a built in SPDIF port, those new connectors will not fit at least in my case without cutting away some metal.
Other than these described above, I can live with the rest of the design, assuming it is close to the final product. I'm not bothered by the IDE connectors at the end of the board because they ususally are, and the relocation of the floppy port is probably for the better. It will likely be a while before I upgrade though, because I usually like to upgrade the whole platform, meaning I'd want an AMD Athlon XP Thoroughbred, paired with DDR400 memory and the nForce2 to go with it. And, let's not forget an NV30 :P Damn this hobby is expensive..

MSI Z87GD65 motherboard Not supporting Latest GPU CARDS FROM AMD

m' having MSI Z87GD65 motherboard & MSI z68A GD80 b3
Since the old motherboard is not supporting my latest R9 290 card I purchased latest rig I7 4770k and added MSI Z87GD65
Both are not displaying anything .. I replaced the r9 290 with service point 3 times and I changed 2 different brands .. all having same issues
I updated the latest motherboard too with latest bios but yet no luck .. I finally came to know I became fool again on choosing MSI board
m' sure the card it working .. why msi is not supporting latest cards ?? why msi is doing to the customers ?? I wasted a lot of money really

Replacement of a broken motherboard in an iMac is 595€ or 1.466€!!!

Replacement of a broken motherboard in an iMac is 595€ but if I ask to return the faulty motherboard (proof of replacement, example is class, curiosity) cost suddenly rises to 1.466€.
Dealer claims 595€ is the price of an "exchange" and 1.466€ is the price of a purchase.
This means a motherboard costs more than a brandnew iMac.
Can someone explain what is happening?

Just google the drive in question (or go directly to the Seagate site) + "form factor." The orginal drive will be 3.5" and have a standard size.
I don't know what will happen with a hybrid, but you might want to know before plungng ahead that all the drives for that model are Apple proprietary, with special firmware for the reading of the internal temp sensor.
The usual result of replacing the drive is that the SMC (System Management) receives no input for the temp of the drive and revs the drive fan up to max. One workaround for this, at least with ordinary drives, is to get the free SSD Fan Control.

Optical Out problems with MSI-K8NS Motherboard Adapter

I have an MSI-K8NS motherboard which came with an extra PCI mount bracket for coax/fiber digital out sound. I just bought a Creative surround sound system set with digital decoder. I hooked the header into where I believe the pins should go into the motherboard and even have a light at the ends of the cable (seemingly has a signal, I presume). I have no idea how to enable this in software, however. The Realtek software that is installed doesn't seem to have any configuration for this digital out, and I can't find a way to use it. I've searched these forums, but still have no idea what's going on. Could someone please help?

Edit: Ok, so it looks like the SoundManager software needs to be in 8 channel mode for spdif to work. I don't understand that, but at least I got it working. Hope this bit of info could help someone else out!

I tried to run the memtest86 several times. It starts off for a while, then the computer hangs up as pervious situations. It could just be that the RAM i am using is imcompatible. I may have to invest into Corsair RAM modules.

When I did a Google search on "1416 error ipod 5th," there is some discussion that the earlier version of the logic board only accepted 30 and 60 GB drives (or words to that effect), but the later "5.5" version did allow larger capacity drives. If that info is true, the question is, do you have a compatible combination of logic board and hard drive?

MSI 915GM4 Motherboard and a P4 s775 2.66/1M/533 Processor - Dont Work

Hello Everyone,
I bought an MSI 915GM4 Motherboard and a P4 s775 2.66/1M/533 Processor yesterday and
assembled it by myself.But when I power it on, it won't display anything nor you can any hear beeping sounds.
So I tried to pull it out from the case to test only the Processor, Motherboard, PowerSupply, Memory and Monitor, but still It won't display nor you can hear beeping sounds that would indicate the cause of the problem.
Later then, I contacted a friend of mine who has a Celeron D s775 Processor and tried it on my MSI Motherboard. Its only the processor that was swapped and nothing else. Guess what? It displays and even loads to windows. So I was started thinking that my own processor might be the problem. But I did not conclude right away that the
processor is the problem and so what I did is I borrowed an Asrock Motherboard (s775)
from the same friend. Now, if this will not work then its confirm that my processor
might be the problem. But I was surprised when it work and still boot up to windows.
Confusion wraps my mind, the next time I started thinking about compatibility issues
and so I visited MSI site looking for CPU Support of my Motherboard and found out that
it should support. Well, to try to resolve this issues I tried flashing the bios for
the motherboard of its latest version updates, but sitll no luck..
Hmmmm.... what could be it? Did I miss something?
Well guys if you could help me on this I really appreciate it.. I don't really know now what move to take.

Does the MSI 6340 Motherboard accept double-sided RAM?

I have an MSI 6340M motherboard. According to the manual, it supports up to two 168-pin unbuffered SDRAM DIMMs, and supports a maximum memory size of 1GB.
Right now, I have two single-sided PC133 DIMMs loaded into the motherboard, which feature 128 MB each. Seeing as how I only have a total of 256 MB of RAM, I was thinking of buying two 512 MB DIMMs to max out my computer's memory capabilities.
I have been looking at RAM auctions on Ebay, and it seems that every 512MB stick of PC133 SD-RAM is double-sided. I cannot find any specific information in the manual that I downloaded for my motherboard which indicates whether or not dual-sided SD-RAM DIMMs are compatible with the MSI-6340 motherboard. Can you please tell me if they are?
Also, even if my motherboard IS compatible with double-sided RAM sticks, will the double-sided nature of the DIMMs negatively affect how well my computer can process data? Someone once told me that double-sided RAM sticks do not process information as well as single-sided RAM sticks, but I don't know if that advice is true, or to what extent.

As long as the 512gig sticks are 64meg x 64 sticks, they should work. Do not use high density memory.

MSI RS3M Motherboard

Hi People,
I need to replace my dead RS3M motherboard. I have seen two motherboards on offer , RS3M-IL and RS3M-L. How do I tell if I have a 'IL' or 'L'? All it says on the motherboard is RS3M.
Does anybody know what the difference between the two are?

Major problem with MSI - K7N2G motherboard

i have just purchased an MSI - K7N2G motherboard, when i switch it on the test lights on the back do not light up and the computer does not even boot up the bios. then when i press the restart button the lights will light but hang on this problem - Initializing Hard drive controller, then when i restart again, lights 1,2 and 3 stay completely off and number 4 shows red and it just keeps switching from these two problems. i have also sent it back and they said there was no problem and have sent it back to me, but i still have the same problem can any one help me?? ;(

i have already got one of these pc's running with same spec except different harddrive, and because it was so cheap and easy to make i made another and since then had loads of probs!
