Replacing a "primary" DC Win2K3 ?

Hello,
I've two DC servers (AD, DHCP, DNS and WINS), running Windows 2003R2 SP3, and the first of them (primary/master) died.
I'll replace it with a new Windows 2003 server (I can not use a newer version for the moment because we don't have 2008/2012 license).
What is the best practice to replace a "primary" DC?
Do I need to transfer FSMO roles to my second server, then add the new server and switch back the FSMO roles to the new server?
Thanks,
Chris

If the DC that previously held the FSMO roles really has died and you have no backup, then you will need to seize the roles to the surviving DC before you promote a new DC.  The procedure for seizing the roles is described in the following article.

Also bear in mind that Windows Sever 2003 reaches end of extended support in July 2015.

  • Replacing the primary site server, SCCM 2012 R2

    Hi,
Setup is currently SCCM 2012 R2 with the primary site server on Windows 2008 R2 on a Hyper-V VM with a separate physical SQL server on 2008 R2 (Windows and SQL). I'm not making any changes to the SQL server at this stage.
I want to completely replace the primary site server VM completely with a brand new VM using Windows 2012 R2.
I was looking to run the SCCM setup and using the Expand an existing stand-alone primary into a hierarchy option but it wont let me do that due to "The site code you specified should not be the same as the primary site's site code".
So seems this Expand an existing option isn't the right option for me?
Do I just add the new server in the SCCM console and add all roles and test and then delete the roles from the old server?
    Thanks
EDIT: I have 7 Secondary sites, so I dont want to just start over by doing some sort of backup and restore to the new server unless someone can tell me that wont break my hierarchy.

a backup and recovery is the correct way to do this, but there are a few things you should keep in mind.
Do a backup of your current environment and shut everything down.
install new vm, ensure the configuration is identical, (dns, hostname, etc...); install the same software and pre-requisites,
    do a recovery
check the following links on how to do a backup and restore:

  • Surprises on Replacing failed primary unit

    Dear friends,
I have done failover for firewalls umpteen number of times but yesterday it failed for some reason.
I had replaced the failed primary unit with a fresh one and i had expected that it will detect the secondary unit as active and try to begin config replication from it but rather it wiped off the secondary unit's config. I dont think that i faulted in the sequence but let me share with you what i did:
    1. Put the four or five lines of failover configuration (except the failover command) and did a no shut on the failover interface (management0/0)
    2. Ran the failover command
Instead of getting the config from the active unit, it started forcing the configs to the other unit. To restore, i had to reload the active unit to restore its config. After that i reloaded the fresh unit and now the failover happened as expected.
I think that i should forced a reload of the new unit before trying to establish failover.
Has anyone tried this in a fail-proof way during production hours? if yes, can you please share with me the steps?
I did not ask for downtime because i was confident but i resulted in bringing down the ASA for 5 minutes because of the unexpected failover action.
    Thanks a lot
    Gautam

    Dear kureli,
Thanks a lot for the efforts you took. I really appreciate it.
Here's the exact sequence of steps that happened:
    1.  When primary unit failed, secondary got active and i dont remember if sh fail showed "secondary- not detected" or "secondary - failed"
    2.  I replaced the faulty primary unit with another primary unit and said no shut on the m0/0 failover interface and also put all the failover commands except "failover" command.
    3. I made sure that the new primary unit runs the same code (i checked only the main code version, i did not check the asdm version similarity). The asdm versions were different on both boxes though.
    4. After powering up the box and connecting cables, i said failover. It then prompted me saying that SSL license is not the same on both units and disabling failover.
    5. I applied for an activiation key from [email protected] and then got the SSL license from them.
    6. Next day i went back to the customer and installed the license key. After installing the license key, i said failover. It gave me the message "No response from mate"
    7. I then said no failover to disable failover on the new primary unit.
    8. I then went to secondary active unit and said failover as failover was disabled
    9. I then went back to primary unit and said failover
    10. This is where blank config replication started !!
    11. Reloaded secondary unit to undo the blank running config
    12. Went to Primary unit and disconnected the failover cable. Rebooted the primary unit and connected the failover cable.
    13. Secondary came up as active, primary then came up, and this time primary honored the secondary as active and did config replication
    14. All was well then!!
Not sure still why this happened and it was a bit shameful for me to see this happening after 3.5 years of firewalling experience.
Anyways, i am willing to learn and improve from now on.
Probably next time, i would try to make sure that i apply the failover configs, reload, and while reload connect the failover cable.
I think the learning lesson is that if the unit reloads, the reloaded unit always honors the currently active unit and does not try to override its role.
This is what worked for me.
    Thanks a lot
    Gautam

  • Replacement of primary unit failed! (ASA5510 active/standby)

    Hi all,
I have an issue bringing up my RMA'd primary ASA unit.
    So what happened so far:
    1. primary unit failed
    2. secondary took over and is now secondary - active (as per sh fail)
    2. requested RMA at Cisco
    3. got ASA and checked that Lic (SSL), OS (8.2.2) and ASDM are at the same level as the secondary
    4. issued wr erase and reloaded
    5. copied the following commands to the new (RMA) primary unit:
    failover lan unit primary
    failover lan interface Failover Ethernet3
failover interface ip Failover 172.x.x.9 255.255.255.248 standby 172.x.x.10
    int eth3
    no shut
    failover
    wr mem
    6. installed primary unit into rack
    7. plugged-in all cables (network, failover, console and power)
    8. fired up the primary unit
    9. expected that the unit shows:
    Detected an Active mate
    Beginning configuration replication from mate.
    End configuration replication from mate.
    10. but nothing happened on primary unit
So can anyone give me assistance on what is a valid and viable approach in replacing a failed primary unit? Is there a missing step that hinders me to successfully replicate the secondary - active config to the primary - standby unit.
I was looking for help on the net but unfortunately I was not able to find anything related to ASA55xx primary unit replacement with a clear guideline or step by step instructions.
Any comments or suggestions are appreciated, and might help others who are in the same situation.
    Thanks,
    Nico

    I have a mailbox with 3 aliases.
I need to be able to send to one of these aliased via my iphone mail, but everytime i do this the alias gets replaced by the primary mail address.
    Help!

I have the exact same problem. My apple ID is [email protected] , which is not any valid email. when i try to send an email from my icloud, it uses my @mac.com apple ID instead of my [email protected] email and i always fail to send it out. This was also alright when i send through iCloud.com. Hope someone would find a solution for this soon.

  • I replaced my primary hard drive. Time Machine restore didn't work. HELP!

My 320GB hard drive that came with the mac pro was out of room. I got a new 1T, put it in, formatted the drive, told Time Machine to restore, it did, the information is there....
BUT, Almost nothing is working. If i click on a program to open (mail, itunes, etc.) the crash window pops up. The info is there but it seems no one is talking to each other inside. Funny thing is that "preview" and "viewer" programs do work, just nothing else. Any ideas????
    Thanks a million...

Don't panic. Let's re-prep the new drive a little differently. This will add considerable time to the formatting process. Again, I'm assuming you have booted the computer from your old hard drive.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Please be sure you read the above instructions carefully before proceeding to be sure you don't miss anything such as selecting the GUID partition scheme.
I will also suggest, just for precautionary reasons, that you do the following before cloning your old drive to the new drive:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Replace Primary Battery

    I have my HP Pavilion dv4 Entertainment PC p/n: WA685UA; OS Windows 7 64-bit.
I have been using my laptop almost two years and my laptop crashed one night while I was doing my homework for an online class. I restarted my computer and troubleshoot it and unfortunately the only error message I can find is to replace my primary battery. So i ordered a replacement battery online knowing that I need to replace the external battery. Unfortunately this failed as well because I do not need to replace the external battery. I troubleshoot again my laptop and did a start up test/ battery test/ hard disk test/ and tune up test. Most of the problem that is indicated is it has a Failure ID of "Q0AAXG-00067U-XD7U21-C0CQ03." It also points me out to replace the "Primary (internal) Battery." Also, my laptop is out of warranty as it has been expired. Are there any other solution or how do I resolve the problem? Please assist. Thank you.

    Hi
Please find the link given below might hlp you to resolve your issue. As per my your notes it seem like the External battery has failed which is on the back panel.

  • ACE Ft config sync question during primary ACE blade replacement

I am replacing my primary ACE blade and am wondering if when I reconfigure the admin context with the ft groups will I have any issues syncing the secondary back to the primary? I don't want to run the risk of a blank config from the new primary blade being pushed to secondary.
    Any help is appreciated.
    thanks

Treat the current as primary and put the new module as a secondary (by applying low priority vlaues for ft vlans ) and disable premption.
    Complete steps will be...
Before putting the new module in, configure the standby (which should be acting as master -- since primary is out) module with the "no-preempt" option on each FT vlan.
    Now with new module
    1. Bring the new ACE module online and upgrade it to the same software than is running on the temp master.
    2. Define all of your resource-maps, FT vlans
    3. Add "no preempt", set a lower "priority" than is defined on the peer (temp master)
    4. Install any SSL certificates
    5. Define your context (repeating the same for SSL certs if necessary).
    6. Add the command "ft auto-sync" to your Admin context.
    7. Once the configuration has synced, (by confirming the FT status is now
"FSM_FT_STATE_STANDBY_HOT"), you're ready to perform the FT switch over.
8.In your Admin context, change the peer priority to be lower than the new
master for each FT group, then issue the command "ft switchover X",
replacing X with each FT group beginning in the Admin context, then doing the same in your other context.
    Thanks

I recently got a boot loop on my computer so when I ran the system and component checks the thing that failed was the primary battery. In hopes that that would solve the problem of the boot loop I got a new battery. It arrived and when I put it in I still got the boot loop so I went back and ran the system and component check again and it says to replace the primary battery. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi,
Thank you for providing that information.
As you were doing a system restore, where did you do this from? I would have to guess safe mode?
If you can get into Safe Mode, try doing a clean boot. The issue you're describing sounds more like a probably with the OS loading drivers or software on boot. The clean boot should eliminate the software/applications if they are the cause. It won't impact if it's a driver. However, a Restore to a point prior to the issue should have.
As yo're running 8 or 8.1 you will also have the option of doing a Refresh (provided you can get into safe mode) if neither a clean boot or restore are allowing you to boot normally that would be the next option. You will lose installed application when doing a refresh.
The final option and more for if you can't even get into safe mode is a system recovery.
I hope something here can help, let me know how it goes.

  • Argh! Trying to Replace Linksys with New Airport Extreme...

Been fighting with this for hours...about ready to take the new Airport Extreme back ...Here's the deal:
I currently have a very wired and wireless 2story home professinally set up with 2 Linksys devices as the primary network and a couple previous generation airport expresses as extenders.   Due to video, audio and other systems the primary router for the network/WAN closet out in the garage needs to remain on the primary Linksys (non wifi) router.  I want to replace the Linksys Wifi router (see below) that is puposely set up and has worked for several years as a double NAT config with the new Airport Extreme but i have tried duplicatiing the exact configs from the Linksys router and all the various ways you can use the Airport Express in DHCP/NAT and even in Bridge mode and it still wont work!  I've never considered Linksys software easier (and definately more flexible and informative) to use than Apple until this experience!  Very frustrating....  I'm being very explicit and using the typical Linksys config profiles below so as to hopefully help you translate this into specific configs i can wrangle into the Airport Extreme to make it work like the
    Current Primary Network:
Current WAN Router / + 24 Port Switched LAN Network (for wired ethernet access ports used throughout house) > Linksys BEFSX41 + Linksys 24 port Switch locted in a custom built data /video / audio closet in garage
    WAN IP:  DHCP
    LAN IP:  192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Current WiFI Network > Linksys WRT160Nv2 (currently conected to the 24port switch via a hardwired ethernet wall port upstairs in my office)
    Internet Connection Type: Static IP
    WAN IP:  192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    LAN IP:  192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Per config notes from the network engineer who i worked with to build this network when i built the house
"this allows the 192.168.0.x wifi device to successfully route to the 192.168.1.x wired router (and vice versa)"
My goal is to replace the Linksys WRT160Nv2 with the new Airport Extreme (whose range and ability to reach both upsatirs and outside to the beach is MUCH better) and locate it DOWNSTAIRS and connect it in the same way as the Linksys (via an ethernet port in the living room) to the same switch / router in the data closet.
I have tried to set up the new Airport Extreme to replicate this config several different ways both bridged and not bridged (including telling it to ignore the double NAT warning) with the latest.   I am pretty sure non-bridged is the right way to do it but i seem to lack a config parameter to tell the Airport Extreme to replicate the equivalent of the WRT160Nv2 settings despite trating all the submenues and options on the airport extreme set up / Airport Utility App.  Do i have to telnet directly into the Airport Extreme config files to do this natively?  Help!
PS - no i cannot / will not put the Airport Extreme in to replace the primary Linksys router in the data closet - there is no way it will fit or that its wifi could penetrate the EMI and insulation of all the other electronics in the data closet out in the garage and get a good connection into the house

The trick on the airport extreme is to change the DHCP .. when you change the DHCP it changes the actual IP of the AE..
So go to the setup and open the dhcp, in the network options and you can select by arrow the first two octets and replace the third.
I just posted info on this in another post..

Does this answer your question, as I am a bit unclear otherwise??
I have to say I do not like using double NAT.. it is becoming worse and worse as the amount of material on the internet that requires interactive connection increases.. you block so much by doing this.. double NAT is an issue .. not just ignore the warning.
There is no reason why you need double NAT.. you should have a single flat network. If you need to keep some things isolated from others the correct way to do it is vlan.. but you will need a better router than the old linksys to do it. And possibly a managed switch. Nowadays a managed 24 port gigabit switch is not a bad price at all.
