Replacing a router

Hello,
I have a question that until now, no one was able to give me a definite answer.
In my home I have a computer network consisting of 2 computers linked by LAN and the main desktop computer situated in a concrete-built room. The computer is connected to a router (D-Link 614) via a D-Link USB Adapter, situated in the concrete-built room.
As the router is quite old, and gives me bad connections,(being situated in the concrete -  built room)  I would like to replace it with a newer and stronger router, either from Linksys or Edimax. (Edimax BR6216MG, or LinkSys WRT54GL).
One dealer informed me that the model LinkSys WRT54GL does not support a cable broadband connection and that I should purchase the model Linksys WRT54G v7.
I would like to know:
1. Will a newer router improve the connection with the computer situated in the concrete - walled room?
2. If I replace the router, do I have to replace the D-Link USB adapter and purchase  a Linksys USB Adapter?
3. Which Linksys model should I buy?
Thanks for the help
zsmi

Hello, Mort,
Thank you for your advice. Unforunately, I am forced by my ISP to buy Lynksys BEFW11S4 or Linksys WRT54G v7, together with a Lynksys adapter (at a high purchase price which includes setting up and support).
If I purchase the router from an outside dealer, I shall not receive from my ISP any support for the new equipment.
Thanks
zsmi

  • WET 610N Cannot Connect after Replacing the Router

    Hello,
WET610 has been working flawlessly with the old router.  Upon replacing the router however, I tried to set it up as was before by using the CD that came with WET610N.  I keep gettin the error 107.
I would appreciate any and all suggestions.  Thank you all in advance.

I’m not that familiar with error 109 but I believe it has something to do with the setup cd being corrupted. Good thing is that there is an option to setup the bridge manually. These links will guide you on how to setup the bridge manually: Manually configuring a Linksys Wireless-N Bridge to work with an access point and Configuring a Linksys Wireless-N Bridge through the web-based setup page. Before reconfiguring the settings of the bridge, make sure that the bridge has been reset to factory default settings (push and hold the reset button for 30 seconds then power it off for another 30 seconds; once the power light is solid, you can start the manual configuration).

I have the 9100EM router and would like to replace it with NETGEAR - N750 Dual Band Wireless-N+ Gigabit Route. Is this possible and if not what can I replace it with that will give me better wireless coverage in my house?

If you replace the VZ router with your own Netgear router you will lose the stb guide, dvr remote access etc.  If you don't have tv service then sure it's OK.
Otherwise look at these links for other options.
What are the tradeoffs between the various router configurations
Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router?
Do I have to use the supplied router with Verizon FiOS?
Personally I just connected my own router from a lan port on the VZ router to the wan port of my router in a different part of the house and run all my in house machines on the gigabit and wireless-n subnet that it provides.

  • Help! Replaced Verizon router and suddenly my 2 Apple TVs won't accept my Apple ID

I have two Apple TVs that were working just fine, but I replaced my 11 year old Verizon FIOS router today, and I have everything connected and working, except the Apple TV's which refuse to accept my Apple ID as correct.  I have Home Sharing turned on on all my computers, but on the Apple TV configuration screen I cannot get past where it wants the Apple ID put in.  I even went online and CHANGED my password, restarted iTunes, turned off Home Sharing and then back on, restarted computers, router, and have been using the remotes to type in my Apple ID and new password literally dozens of times and it says my password or user ID cannot be found or is incorrect; I know it is not incorrect....Help!  One thing I noticed is the Apple TV in the configuration screen seems to have a strange IP address.....169. something or other instead of 192.168 >>> like everything else.  I even tried changing that manually to what was showing for the Apple ID on my router screen but that didn't work either.  We have not changed any connections on the TV, Apple TVs.....just the router replacement.  Because it's a new router, it has a new network name and password, but I can't get to the point where I can put that in (tried selecting network automatically), because everything I try to do I get stopped by the Apple ID screen.

  • Setting up airport extreme to replace netgear router

    Hi,
Thanks in advance for help and advice with this one. Im desperate to replace my unreliable netgear router so i bought a Apple Airport Extreme base station (Generation 6).
At the moment I have my satellite box (tooway satellite provided by europasat) plugged into my netgear router and can access the internet via the wifi. I also have my airport extreme WAN port plugged into one of the netgear router ethernet bays. So effectively I have 2 wireless networks and can connect to the internet with both.
I tried removing my netgear router from the system and plugging my satellite box directly into the airport extreme and started set up. The airport extreme sets up ok but i just get an orange light for the internet.. I have tried using static IP, DCHP etc and also changing it from off bridge mode to DCHP and DCHP and NAT but i get various errors. Its keeps asking for a DNS address but i don't know what to enter..
If i look on my router setup its currently set to get IP addresses dynamically from the ISP.
Can anyone help me set this up properly without the netgear router (which constantly resets and drops the internet connection!!)
I just need a reliable home network that can connect several macs, iPads and iPhones, PS4 etc
Happy to paypal a small contribution for anyone who can help.
    Thanks,
    Adam

my details were IP address 10.100.38.234
As we suspected, your satellite provider is giving you a "private" IP address, and not the "public" IP address that you should be receiving. There is nothing wrong with the Netgear router,  but it sounds like you have the AirPort Extreme connected at this time.
"Off" Bridge Off would normally be the correct setting to use with your satellite "modem" since it is behaving as if it were another router.
Unfortunately, you will have to use the DHCP and NAT setting on your AirPort Extreme to compensate for the incorrect IP address assignments that your satellite service is providing to you. Since your satellite "modem" is already providing NAT service, and the AirPort Extreme is as well, you have two devices both trying to do NAT.......that is why you see the Double NAT error.
Unless you can get your satellite provider to provide you with a "public" IP address, you will have to continue to run the AirPort Extreme in the Double NAT setup and hope for the best.  You might be able to get away with this error on a simple home network.
If you do not want to see the blinking amber light, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Extreme.  A smaller window will appear. Look for a Status setting and click on the small amber dot next to Status.  Another window will appear with an option to "Ignore" the Double NAT error.  That will give you a green light on the AirPort Extreme, and hopefully things will work.
Double NAT can cause a number of unpredictable things to occur on a network, but the most common is slow browsing on the Internet, and/or you may be able to get to some web pages, but not others.
Hopefully, things will work OK for you since you really will no other options to set up the AirPort Extreme correctly until you receive the correct public IP address that you deserve from your satellite provider.  You might want to speak to them about this and let them know that you are on to their tricks, though.

  • Replaced old router, now cannot automatically find printers on network?

Recently replaced old Belkin router w/new Linksys BEFSR41 router. Internet access on all computers is normal. However, the computers on my home network (all Macs both wired and wireless) can no longer print to either of the printers on the network unless we address them with specific IP addresses. The printer drivers are up to date. All connections to the router are correct and the cables are tested and working properly. When printing, the printer window shows an endless search "looking for printer..." Additionally, with file sharing enabled on all computers, I am no longer able to "see" the computers on the network. I am certain the issue is some setting in the router I have failed to adjust. Can someone help me!

I have done the powering down and sequential restart of all components with no solution in sight yet. The network has the following components: Motorola cable modem connected to the Linksys router w/4 ports which has connected to it the following components: an Airport Extreme set to NOT distribute IP addresses but allows the router to do so automatically; Mac Pro; G4 Tower; Linksys Switch via uplink cable to which are attached the two printers (OKIDATA and HP). By the way, eliminating the Switch by connecting the OKIDATA directly to the router did NOT solve the problem, even with power downs and power ups. Thanks

  • Replacing wireless router with another

I have just purchase a WRT310N to replace my WRT54GSV4. What procedure do I need to follow to make it this go smoothly?  Thanks   Dave

Just follow the directions in the users guide that came with the router and things should go just fine.

  • I have replaced my router and cannot connect the airport

My ATT router has been replaced and when I set it up I now have no internet connection through my airport extreme

Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable is connected to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AT&T router and the WAN port (circle icon) on the AirPort Extreme.
Then, open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup to check settings on the AirPort Extreme
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your name for the network
Check mark next to Allow this network to be extended
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Radio Channel = Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal
    Wireless Password = Your password
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save any changes and restart the entire network again

  • Hooking up time capsule - benefit to replace existing router?

Hooking up my time capsule to my macair (2011) and mac desktop (2007) - already have a linksys srx 400 router (wrt54gx4) in place, working well.  I want the time capsule primarily for wireless backup.  ANy real benefit to displacing my current router - both the time capsule and srx router seem like they will do wireless activity equally well.  Comments?
    Thanks

Not in so many terms. However, were I you I would replace the old router with the Time Capsule because that is much easier to do.

  • Replacing Actiontec router?

Ok, so I have Verizon FiOS with coax coming out of the ONT. I am currently using the Verizon-supplied Actiontec router over MoCA.
I'm interested in replacing the Actiontec router with one of my own choosing. I realize I could do this by asking Verizon to come and install ethernet out of the MoCA. However, I was wondering if this scenario would also work:
    1. What if I remove the Actiontec and replace it with a Netgear MoCA-ethernet adapter:
    http://www.netgear.com/products/home/powerline-and-coax/high-performance/MCAB1001.aspx
    2. Then, I plug the Netgear MoCA adapter's ethernet output into the WAN port of whatever router I choose.
Now, I don't care about VOD or the FiOS guide or the Motorola set-top boxes (I'm switching over to Ceton's InfiniTV in my own HTPCs).
What I do have is Verizon FiOS triple play so my phone, internet, and TV are all over Verizon FiOS. Do I need the Actiontec router for voice service? Will my plan above work?

no you dont need the Verizon router for phone.
    Yes, that will likely work
Remember that if you do this, you are completely on your own if anything goes wrong or you have any problems. Verizon will NOT support it if you make ANY changes.
Not that this is a bad thing in any stretch of the imagination. But I point it out as many on this board mistakenly thought they could do anything they wanted and still get support (and demanded support) from Verizon and were supprised when Verizon basically said "you have problem? Using your own equiptment? Higher someone to come out and help you. Good by"
Even if the problem is with Verizon, you will have to figure it out on your own, or restore it to the Verizon setup before you will get any support at all. And I do mean AT ALL.
Now that that has been said. I'd say go for it.

  • Replacing verizon router with my own

    Hello,
I want to replace my current verizon router with my own, the issue I have is I can not logon.  I know I can do a full reset but all the info will be lost. (gateway, verizon password, ect).  Is there any way around this?  I only have fios, no tv.  Incoming connection is a cat 5 cable from fiberoptic converter.  Or will I be stuck calling tech support?
Any help would be appreciated, I have small to fair knowledge with these devices.
    Geo1cran

since your hooked up with cat5 your good to go. Now if your DHCP verizon would need to help or if your PPPOE then all you have to do is hook up your router and your good to go.

  • Replacing the router (and maybe the modem)

I've had loads of problems with my infinity. Essentially it is incredibly variable, going from the full 75MB/s DL to 0.37 MB/s DL which gets very annoying. A lot of my devices also tend to lose the wireless despite being in the same room as the modem/router. I know the problem doesn't lie with the devices as they work everywhere else, therefore I am looking to change the modem/router.
I purchased this one a while back it's the Netgear N300 Dual Band Modem-Router. I am just wondering if it is able to completely replace the modem and the router, or even just the router? I.e. will it work with infinity?
If it won't work, can anyone suggest an alternative router for me?
    Many thanks

So we've spent a long time living with these problems and I got fed up and tried to get one of my friends to play about with the netgear modem-router i got, to get it working. unfortunately he couldn't link it up to actually get the internet, and he thought it was because the router wasn't actually recognising the modem and therefore picking up the internet.
I'm just wondering on the routers set-up bit, there's an area where it asks if my internet connection requires a password, is that where I put in the Homehub login details?
If i'm spouting rubbish point me in the direction of a step-by-step guide on what to do (i've tried searching myself but i don't think i know what i'm actually looking for!!) and i'll follow that to the letter and see if it works!!
    Hi there,
First off, make sure that you're connecting the ethernet cable that's coming from the OpenReach modem to the port marked WAN on the back of your router. If you connect it to any of the other ports, it won't see the connection.
Another thing you need to do is in the username/password fields for your connection the login would be [email protected] and the password is anything you like, but most people just use "bt" - Just don't leave it blank, or it won't connect.
See below for a screenie (A picture tells a thousand words and all that)
    I hope this info helps

  • TRYING TO SET UP I PAD TO HP AIR PRINTER HAD PROBLEMS WITH ,TALKTALK ROUTER, ASKED AT PC WORLD ADVISED TO BY AIRPORT EXPRESS BUT STILL NO LUCK WILL NOT COMPLETE SET UP. THOUGHT THIS WOULD REPLACE THE ROUTER, I THINK I MAY HAVE BEEN WRONGLY ADVISED

Having problems with air printer to i pad, problem seems to lie with talktalk router, hp solutions managed to get i mac to air printer working but not i pad, adivsed to buy another router as talktalk is not compatiable with bonjour. Went to PC world apple department advised to by airport express. tried setting it up using but will not finalise. i was led to believe this would replace the talktalk router? i feel i have been sold the wrong thing. Any suggestions

This happened to me when I was setting up the wireless router for a friend.  The issue is with the Westall modem.  You need to go in and setup the "bridge" option on the westell modem.  The link below gives directions or you can call bellsouth dsl support (this is how I learned about it).
    http://help.bellsouth.net/bellsouth/asp/contentview.asp?isbrowse=true&sprt_cid=3f993409%2Ddff7%2D422...
    Good luck
    Solution:
    Method 1 - Hard Reset
Restore the modem to default settings by pressing the Reset button on the back of the modem and holding it for 3 seconds. (Bridged mode is the default setting for the Westell).
After the modem regains sync, it is in Bridged mode. Do not attempt to surf into the modem as surfing into the modem will enable the Easy Login page and convert the modem from bridged mode to a PPP mode.
    Method 2 – Bridged Mode
Access the Westell interface using http://192.168.1.254 or http://launchmodem.
Click on the Broadband DSL Line button.
    Click on the Protocols button
Select the radio button to the left of Option 2 (Bridge)
Click the save button. Once the modem has restarted it is in bridge mode.
    ALL STEPS COMPLETE

you can't. the extreme is only a router. you need a separate modem (or disable the wireless part of your old router and use it as a modem - if that's possible).

  • Replace old router with WRT110 and now I can not see shared printer on network

Replaced a BEFW11S4 with a WRT110. Now I can not see a shared printer on the network any more. I have not changed anything on the computer that has the printer shared. I can see the internet on all the computers, but not the shared printer. can you help?

First which you need to check, is your printer is working Offline on your computer. In this case you need to Re-map your Printer on your Computers back again. First check if you have any Firewall or Antivurs Installed on your computer try to disable it and check if you are able to print from your computer. If not then try to Remap the printer on your computer.
Go to Network connections window and if you are able to see your computer name on which the printer is installed, then right click on the Printer and click on "Connect" or "MAP" once done you will be able to print from your computer.
Note down the IP address of the Computer on which you have Installed the Printer. (Click on Start - Run - CMD and click Ok, now in the command prompt type "ipconfig" and note down the Ip address, Then go to your other computer and Click on Start - Run - CMD and click Ok and now in the Command prompt type "ping (IP address of your main computer) and hit enter and check if you are getting any replies. If yes, then again click on "Start - Run - type ( \\ip address of your main computer) and click Ok, and now you will be able to see your printer name then right click on it and click on "Connect" or Map, once done, now check if you are able to print from your computer.
