Replacing a Superdrive - is there a better option?

I have a third-generation iMac that is about 18 months old. Suddenly (i.e. today) the DVD drive will not read data DVD disks that it wrote in the last 3 days. This is a problem because these DVDs were supposed to be my backup of some critical data.
I know that the write was successful because I read the data fine yesterday, AND I can read it fine using an external LaCie DVD drive.
The weird thing is that it is only data DVDs that the drive is not reading. I can read commercial and home made video DVDs with no problem!
The machine is out of warranty and if I have to replace it I doubt I would want another Matshita UJ-846. Is this not a good model, or did I just get a bad one? I'm pretty suspicious now because my the DVD drive on my wife's new iBook just died - after only 3 months!
Has anybody run into this problem reading data DVDs?
Can anyone recommend a better replacement for the Matshita?

As for voiding the warranty, no one here can say, since no one here works for AppleCare. You'd best ask that question of AppleCare directly at 1-800-APLCARE.

    We have developed an AIR application that involves syncing multiple audio tracks with a video track.  We are using the Spark VideoDisplay component for video and the Flash SoundChannel object for audio.  We are having trouble keeping the audio synced with the video.  Is there a better component to use for this?  Is there some technique to keeping audio and video synced in Flash/AIR?

    Your sample does not look like being »foot-intensive«, I only find two footnotes. And those will not be a problem for FrameMaker.
    For 2-column text layout FrameMaker (as InDesign) gives you the option to create one text frame set to have two columns, or create two connected text frames, each of them one column. To keep the footnote in the original column, you would use the latter method. More information can be found in the online help:

    Regarding other elements of the sample pages I don’t see any stumbling blocks. Just be aware that the general approach to layout, and especially when using XML-structured documents, is completely different from InDesign. With InDesign you just move all the frames wherever and whenever you want. With FrameMaker you plan ahead, create master pages and paragraph styles and then follow this original design. Creating layout changes »on the fly« is just not the way you work in FrameMaker. But this limitation is the reason for a higher layout consistency.

  • DVI to Video adapter CRT Broadcast Monitor? Is there a better option?

    I am a freelance motion graphics artist, and I use Final Cut Studio, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.
    I need a CRT monitoring solution for checking my color grades, etc.
    SD resolution is fine, and i've got my eye on a JVC TMH-150CGU broadcast monitor from B&H. It has an S-Video (Y/C) input.
    I'm thinking of using the Apple DVI Video Adapter hook up to it via S-Video.
    I have a Pantone Eye-One that I can use to calibrate the monitor.
    Would this setup work ok in the above applications? Will it support Digital Cinema Desktop Preview in Final Cut?
    I have the 30" Apple display. Will connecting the CRT via DVI steal 256mb of my video memory???? That seems drastic considering it's already driving a 30" display AND running after effects!!
    I've thought about FireWire monitoring, but I suspect the FireWire/DV 4:1:1 compression will affect the colors.
    I know a CAPTURE CARD would be ideal, with SDI, etc... but I don't really have a need for a full blown capture card at the moment. I don't think use it to it's full potential (ie- to capture). It seems silly spending $$$$ just for a monitoring solution.
    Or is a capture card my only option for pro monitoring? If I was to buy one, i'd want a future proof one should I digitize in the future (ie, HD, with analog support), so that leaves either a Blackmagic Intensity Pro (which I believe is only 8 bit) or a BlackMagic Decklink HD Extreme. And then i'd also need the SDI or Component expansion card for the JVC monitor, and before I know it, i've spent over $1000, just for a decent monitoring solution. Ouch.
    I strongly considered the Intensity Pro card, because I could monitor SD component, and HDMI HD from the same card. But it put me off when I heard it ws only 8 bit. But it is 4:2:2 though.
    What might KILL the Apple DVI adapter option is I have a TON of PAL footage, and I heard the adapter is NTSC only (or a seperate PAL version). So even though the monitor supports both standards, the adapter doesn't. Or so I've heard.
    Very confused. Any other options or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    From the sound of things you have answered your own question.
    If you wanted a CRT to just check video playback, safe areas and text legibility then a cheap option of monitoring via a deck or camera would suffice.
    You mention a lot of PAL footage just as a FYI this would be 4:2:0 as opposed to 4:1:1 with NTSC under the DV codec.
    You don't mention (and I'm sorry if I missed it) what codec you output to. I had always found when working with DV only that a DV monitoring solution was sufficient for most applications.
    However as you indicate that colour plays a factor in the equation bite the bullet and get a decent monitoring system from the off. I am using the Decklink Extreme and have found it to be excellent especially in real time conversion and monitoring of HD to SD.
    In addition you get the ability to work all the way up to 10bit (drives allowing) and capture over SDI with full deck control.
    You could stagger the cost since the BM card will let you monitor composite out in addition to component so the expansion board for the CRT might not be a must have from the get go for you.
    Whatever route you go you will want to calibrate the CRT using broadcast colour bars rather than a Pantone system, theres plenty of info on the web regarding this . . and why.

    i wrote a for.. loop and im checking one bye one from ticket master table using select count(*) from ticket_master where ticket_no = var, which is time consuming and server becoming slow when i issue this query. my ticket master ticket_no is indexed.

  • Populating a PDF: still use FDF toolkit or is there a better option?

    I have had an Access app with some VBA in it that would generate an FDF and merge it into the PDF.  It runs on Windows machines and is only for 2 users.  There is no other functionality required.  Just populate some fields in a PDF and then load the PDF using Reader for view and print.  My problem is that it is no longer working.  I have a new install of Windows 7 64-bit and I cannot for the life of me get the FDF reference or libraries to register or load.  I've tried every combination of regsvr32 I can think of and I still get the error that the library cannot be found.  It is on a network drive, then I moved it local to Windows\system32, etc... It will not load.  So my code looks like this:

    When it gets to CreateObject it fails with "ActiveX Component cannot create object."  This is due to fdfacx.dll not being registered correctly.  When I try to register it I get "The module fdfacx.dll failed to load.. the specified module could not be found."
    So my questions are:
    1-- Should I still be using FDFtoolkit for this?
    2-- Is there a newer version that works with Windows 7?  The one I have is circa 2004 and has two files fdfacx.dll and fdftk.dll.  I have tried to find a newer one without success.
    3--  What am I missing about getting it to register?  I've downloaded a new one and overwritten it just to be sure it isn't corrupted.

    Hi...  I have a similar situation where we use the FDF toolkit to populate PDF documents programatically.  I am a bit confused as to your mentioning that support for FDF has been dropped.  Please check out the following link which seems to imply that Interapplication Communications using what appears to be an identical interface is supported by Acrobat 9.1.
    Interapplication Communication API Reference for Acrobat 9 
    Is this API now part of the LiveCycle Forms Server product?  Can this API provide me with an upgrade path with minimal software changes?  Is there any documentation available for migrating from FDF to LiveCycle?

  • I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 for PHP - Is there a better option?

    Most of my friends seem to use regular text editors for their php programming.  I do not need to connect to a database with my coding.  I just would like something that understands php functions and such, so that appropriate areas are highlighted.
    Or so that php errors such as missing semicolons and such are easy to spot.
    What would you recommend I switch to? Or is there not something that Adobe makes that is specifically for PHP?

    While Dreamweaver CS4 didn´t add significant improvements for PHP developers in particular, the new version CS5 is indeed a huge step forward. Please have a look at the excellent review by David Powers: Dreamweaver CS5 is good news for PHP devs
    My recommendation ? Well, if you consider Dreamweaver CS3 in general (not just talking about the PHP specific features) as overall helpful tool in many areas (e.g. CSS rendering, visual layout drafts etc), then CS5 will be an improvement in these areas as well and could be worth trying/buying. On the other hand: if you´re only interested in "whatever" development tool to give you advanced PHP support, the Eclipse - based Aptana plugin or the Netbeans PHP IDE are pretty fine tools as well.

  • Better options than DAVE for Win NT connection?

    I work for a small Mac design group in a large business environment. We store Quark, InDesign, Photoshop files on the companies Win NT Server. To do this they have installed DAVE because they said just using OS X's PC connect ability was causing the documents to be looked at as .exe or unrecognizable files by the Mac. Lately some files are giving I/O errors on the server and getting corrupted. Is there a better option for communicating with a PC server than DAVE?

    For just using OS X, I've never heard of any problems like that; I'm wondering if they're just confused? Or are they using a fairly fancy, unusual setup of some sort? Has anyone tried just connecting with the standard Mac feature?; I would be curious to hear what breaks (since if something does break, it probably implies that someone either misconfigured the Macs or misconfigured the server).
    For the files in question: Are you able to access these files from a Windows computer?; can you read them there? I'm wondering if the IO error was a network problem (that DAVE might have a connection to), or just that their server's hard disk is failing.

Although this works, I have a feeling that this is not quite right. I feel that there should be some better way to do this, switching the panel and request the program to redraw the replacing JPanel. Is there a better way for this?
    2. Most of the time, the JPanel changes the size according to the components on it. I have tried several LayoutManager, but it seems that those components have more priority. Is there a way to completely fix the JPanel so that they stay the same size?

    I went to my local Apple store last weekend with a similar issue on my 2007 C2D MBP and they quoted me a price of around £60 (excluding VAT) to replace the optical drive. That's about the same price as the external optical drive a bought for my RMBP.
    Alternatively you could just buy a 3rd party external drive if you want to save cash but note that the external Apple superdrive is not compatible with MacBooks with built in optical drives.

  • Complete Apple TV Resync when upgrading my server?  Is there a better way?

    We recently replaced our old imac that served are the ITunes library with a new one. We have two Apple TVs.
    I configured the new server using a time machine backup from my old. I de-authorized my old computer and re-authorized the new one. All of my music, movies and pictures transferred over fine. To get the Apple TVs to work (they weren't visible on the new server), I had to 'remove' them from the old computer. Then add them again be getting a code from the ATVs and typing it into the new ITunes server.
    Even though both ATVs were current with all content, they reloaded everything. I'm about 48 hours in, and it still isn't done. Was there a better way?

    No, unfortunately, it's one of the more annoying aspects of the ATV. If you replace the computer you keep your iTunes library on the ATV sees it as a different library even though it's the same library on a different computer. The hardware signature of the new computer is different, so the ATV doesn't recognize it as the same library. The same thing happens if you replace the hard drive in your computer, the ATV will no longer recognize it as the same computer. Your only option is to wait for the sync to complete.

  • Is There a Better Way to Work in the Marker List Window?

    Is there a better way to sequentially listen to phrases one-by-one in the Marker List window? What I'm doing is Auto-Marking one single long file to break out 271 bits and save each as their own file. It's WAY faster than copying and pasting bits into new files and "saving as" 217 times.
    BUT, after Auto-Marking, I have 300-400 phrases to listen to, deleting the non-keepers as I go, until I'm left with my "keeper" 271 marked phrases. But it's so tedious to move from phrase-to-phase. I have to double-click each one before I can hear it (you can move the cursor with the down-arrow, but it won't actually select the audio). So I have to use the mouse (unless I'm missing something) and double-click each of the hundreds of phrases. Then whenever I delete one (which I'll have to do about a hundred times or more to get rid of bad takes, alternates, etc.), inexplicably the cursor jumps way up the list so you have to scroll back down dozens of files to get to where you were. It took me 35 minutes to do it this last time.
    Contrast that with Reaper's audition/preview functionality (which, ironically, AA has also, but only for files already saved into a folder). Once I had all the files saved into a folder, I QC'd all 217 files in Reaper and MAN what a difference! All I had to do was use the "down" arrow to advance to the next file AND have it play automatically (Audition can do the same thing with the "Open File" feature). It literally took me 5 minutes to check all 217 files that way. If AA could add that kind of functionality to the Marker List window, or if I'm just completely missing something (very possible) I would REALLY be happy.
    Any ideas?

    That doesn't quite do what I need. My end-product is 271 (used to be 116) separate files created from one large file. That large one is made up of WAY more than 271 (the VO actor records different versions of some commands, makes mistakes, etc.).
    So I need the ability to listen to each marker, and then be able to delete it if need be.
    The Playlist makes this impossible in two ways. It only has 2 options for hearing each marker, and neither option allows me to delete that marker after I've heard it. It either plays them all back-to-back without stopping, or it plays each as you click the "Move Down" button. That last one would be great if showed me which marker was playing! But it doesn't, so there is no way for me to know which marker number I just heard, nor can I delete that marker after I hear it.
    Sigh.

    Now I want to make it produce reports with aggregates and projections
    without instantiating JDO instances. Here is an example of the sort of thing
    I want it to be capable of doing:
    Each asset has one associated t.description and zero or one associated
    d.description.
    For every distinct combination of t.description and d.description (skip
    those for which there are no assets)
    calculate some aggregates over all the assets with these values.
    and here it is in SQL:

    Neil,
    It sounds like the problem that you're running into is that Kodo doesn't
    yet support the JDO2 grouping constructs, so you're doing your own
    grouping in the Java code. Is that accurate?
    We do plan on adding direct grouping support to our aggregate/projection
    capabilities in the near future, but as you've noticed, those
    capabilities are not there yet.

    My macbook pro doesn't read or burn CD's, doesn't burn DVD's. It's a 5 year old computer and I'm sure it's time to replace the superdrive in it. Is there a step by step procedure in doing this that I can do myself? I went into an apple store and was told the optical drive needs to be replaced.
