Replacing AE Card with AE Base Station?

Ordered a 2.66ghz MacPro on Friday and the expected delivery has been pushed out to mid September because I've added Airport Express and Bluetooth. I don't want to wait over a month for my new Mac! Is it possible to substitute the AE card option with a AE Base Station. Besides the lack of Bluetooth, which i don't mind loosing, I assume the AE Base Station would do the same job as the internal AE card. Right? Would there be any advantages/disadvantages to this option?
Also, does anyone know if Apple Australia would honor the current US offer of a iPod Nano rebate for education purchases?

To order earlier you can order without the Airport installation and have an Authorised Apple Service Centre do the installation for you at a later date. It is not a user-installable part so it's doubtful you'll be even be able to order it as a standalone part.
Otherwise, you can opt for a USB wireless adapter. I'm not sure if a PCIe adapter will work given EFI rather than BIOS though there's no harm in asking manufacturers like LinkSys of their product will work in a Mac Pro.
A base station will not work in the way that you want it to and will be more hassle than it's worth.
As for the iPod rebate, Apple Computer Australia will not honour an offer made by Apple Computer although Apple Computer Australia should have the same offer. You might want tot call them and ask them about it else consult the Apple Store web site…

IMac doesn't detect the base station correctly (with new base station)

I have a brand new Airport Express. I'm trying to connect to my iMac G5. Everything works fine in the start up with getting the green light on the Express base station. But, my iMac doesn't "connect" with the base station.
I try the "Airport Setup Assistant" and get a window that says "No new Airport networks were found."
I look at the "pie" at the top of the iMac screen. It has the white and black stripes on it. I click it and find "Apple Network e3fec9" and select it. The signal level shown has all blue buttons. That window also reports "Status: Connected to 'Apple Network e3fec9'" and "Base Station ID:00:19:E3:E3:FE:C9". That's what makes me think that my problem must be in the iMac and not the base station.
I had also tried my Dell laptop (from work) and found that it found the internet network. It detected the "local host" and "Apple Network" and the signal strength was very good (~90% or so). The only problem was that the laptop thought it needed to recreate an IP address before it could connect to the internet. I didn't do that, since I saw it was detecting the network.
Please help. Why should this be so hard?

I'm confused. You say you're connected to "Apple Network e3fec9", and you're having trouble connecting your iMac? It sounds like you've managed to connect to your Airport Base Station.
Have you configured the Internet settings for the base station? Try this:
1. Launch Airport Admin Utility (in /Applications/Utilities/) select "Apple Network e3fec9" and click Configure.
2. Under the Airport tab, give the base station a name, click the Base Station Options… button, and make sure Enable Ethernet Port is checked.
3. Select Create a Wireless Network (Home Router) if it isn't already selected, give your network a name, and check Create a closed network
4.Click the Wireless Security button and set it to WPA Personal, and enter a password.
5. Under the Internet tab, set Connect Using: to Ethernet, and in the Configure dropdown, select Using DHCP
6. Click the Access Control tab and click the plus button on the right side of the window. In the panel that pops up, click the This Computer button.
7. Click Update
I'm hoping it's something simple, like Enable Ethernet Port wasn't checked or something, and not something more serious.

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and have recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Now airport utility won't work with my base station so I bought a Time Capsule. For the life of me I can't make the substitution work and only see a blinking amber light.

Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.

You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).

Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

At this point are you saying that none of your wireless clients can connect to the AirPort? If so, then I would recommend that you do the following:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

Help please: extreme card in 17" iMac with graphite base station SUPER slow

I am at my wits end and hope someone can help me. I have a graphite base station that has worked perfectly with a TiBook for years...I just got a 17" iMac with an Airport Extreme card and it is having big problems. The symptom is difficulty connecting to the base station, and when it does manage to connect, it is really slow...we're talking about 300 KB per MINUTE. The signal strength shows 4 bars, and I confirmed with AP Grapher that the signal is always running 70% or more. The older TiBook meanwhile works great, as it always has. A peer-to-peer wireless network between the two computers (bypassing the base station) also works great. Wired connection to internet also great. So I suspect the problem is the communication between the graphite base and the Extreme card...though this is supposed to work fine. It seems the hardware itself must be OK because the base serves the old TiBook so well, and the peer-to-peer network works great too. I am well and truly stumped and hope someone out there can help.
G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I am having what I think is a similar problem, although my problem is more related to a complete loss of signal. I am starting to think, from what I am reading in other posts here, that it is something related to 10.4.3, as the problem I am experiencing began after installing the 10.4.3 update. MacBook problems with Snow base station - other laptops work fine

Hi,
I just purchased a new MacBook to replace an iBook G4 800.
My snow base station works fine with the old iBook G4 (which has an extreme card) and with a borrowed PowerBook G4 Aluminum 1.5 GHz (also extreme card) but will not work with my new Mac Book. Every time I try to connect - I receive an error "There has been an error accessing "my name" 's network. Sometimes it will connect, other times (most of the time), it will not.
My MacBook connects fine to my neighbors Linksys access points and our work Lucent access points (which are b also - snow is b).
I did a search and am reading other people having similiar problems. I was wondering if anyone has resolved their problems. I spent 2 plus hours on the phone with Apple yesterday. They are placing the blame on the older base station (snow) but it is obvious that snow is working fine for other computers.

I am still a little confused. I can be 2 feet from my base station and will keep hitting "try again" when trying to access my network and will get "an error has occurred" many times and eventually it will connect and I will have an incredibly strong signal. My MacBook will continue to have a great strong signal until it goes to sleep and then I will have a difficult time connecting again. My neighbors base station is a weak signal and I can easily join their network. Every time I connect, I have problems but once connected, it is great.
I guess it can be interference but I am now wondering if it is related to the snow/graphite base station only. This laptop has no problems joining other b base stations.
I spent hours on the phone with an Apple wireless support specialist the other night. He wants me to try an Extreme base station. He didn't indicate that he was aware of any MacBook problems (and he mentioned interference and we setup my laptop to only join my network and it didn't make a difference).
More to come.... IF anyone switched to a Extreme Base Station and that worked fine - please let me know. Though I sort of resent having a functional b base station that works with every other laptop and have to spend $200 towards another base station because of a new laptop.

Confusion about using non-Apple prod. on my powerbook with AE base station

I have a G5 and an base station. Always worked fine.
Then I wanted to add a USB wireless "card" to my powerbook 12 inch G4. The salesman said they are not well supported by Apple. So i found an IO DATA Ethernet Converter WN-G54/C which promises MAc compatibility.
Problem is the instruction book is Japanese only and I see no Eng one on the net. Probablty not released yet.
On the other hand, assume these all must work sort of the same.
Cannot get it to work, though it seems to recognize something.
Just to make sure..can I NOT connect to my Aiport base station with a mac connected via a product like this ethernet converter, which seems to allow such connections?
And do I just igore the IO data settings and try to configure it through the Airport application? It seems the airport connection is for apple cards to connect to apple or non apple networks.
But here i think I have to use the IO data ethernet converter application to connect to the apple or other networks?
Anyway, I JUST realized my Powerbook has an Apple airport card in it, as i tried to turn it on even without the IO data in,s o this is a mute point for now.
but if i ever need the IO data (it seems it may have a stronger ability to pull in the signal as it has a big antenna on it), i would like to undersatnd how it works.

Dial up account setting issue with graphite base station and ibook

hello, I have spent hours and hours researching this issue. I cannot connect to the internet using my graphite base station and ibook. It seems to be a settings/configuration issue for my dial up account. what settings do I use? which account do I choose? Same as modem settings? is there a conflict somewhere? The airport card was checked at the apple genius bar, it's ok. How do i configure the base station? Thanks. What's with the paper clip deal? Is orange or green the preferred color?

Anyway, how do you change the modem settings on the airport.
You need to administer the Graphite using AirPort Admin Utility. To do so with a computer running Mac OS X 10.4, you should use AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5. First, join the computer to the Graphite's wireless network. Then, launch the utility, select the Graphite on the opening screen, click "Configure," and enter the Graphite's base station password. (Note: the base station password is not the same thing as your wireless network password and is also not the same thing as your dial-up account password.) The dial-up modem settings are found in the "Internet" pane of AirPort Admin Utility. In the "Connect Using" pop-up menu, select "Modem (V.90)" if your Internet Service Provider ("ISP") supplies a telephone number that is compatible with the V.90 protocol. The actual settings to enter (the dial-up telephone number of your ISP; your ISP account name and password; and (if necessary) DNS server addresses and/or domain name) are those specified by your ISP.
Does this affect the dial up internal modem settings?
No. The internal modem settings and the AirPort settings on your computer are found in different portions of the Network pane of System Preferences. The computer connects to the base station via AirPort, regardless of how the base station connects to the Internet.
The internal modem settings on the computer, if they work, may be useful as a reference. The account name and other settings to use in the "Internet" tab of AirPort Admin Utility are the same ones that you would use on your computer if your computer were connecting to the Internet using its internal modem.
What's with the paper clip deal?
A paper clip is used if you need to reset the base station. See step 4 of Article HT2439 -- Resetting the AirPort Base Station (Graphite). (Note: the references in this article to AirPort Setup Assistant are out of date. You must instead use AirPort Admin Utility to reconfigure the base station, as well as to reinstall base station software, if you reset the base station.)
Is orange or green the preferred color?

Need help with airport base station setup

I have a classroom with a dozen G5 Mac Pros running Tiger and we want to allow them to use a couple of A3 photo-quality inkjet printers and a couple of flatbed scanners.
I see that the airport base station extreme only has one usb port.
Is it possible to use one airport extreme base station to connect all of these peripherals, add airport cards to each Mac Pro, and be able to use any of the printers or scanners from any of the Macs?
What other equipment is necessary?
Should we look to buy any specific printers or scanners that will be more compatible?
Is there some other approach that will work better?

one usb port but user can connect a multi port usb power hub for multiple devices. I run three Lacie quadras connected to a seven port Belkin hub to the Extreme N router.

Extending Guest Wifi with Multiple Base Stations

The 7.6.3 firmware update reports this new feature:
"The ability to extend the Guest Wi-Fi network on a network that is configured with multiple AirPort Base Stations"

I assumed that this meant that an Airport Express was able to "Extent" the guest wifi network. However, I am not able to get this to work. Having entered all the details I just get the orange light and the message that it was unable to extend the network - check the details. I have checked them multiple times and still not working. If I switch to extending the "main" network then it works first time, but does not extend the guest as far as I can see.
If I set up from scratch it picks up the guest network and tries to extend but then switches to the main wifi later in the process after claiming to extend the base station itself, not one of the wifi networks.
What does this update mean?! Has anyone managed to "extend the Guest Wi-Fi network" in any way?
All devices have been updated to 7.6.3 and all airport utilities have been updated to the latest version (6.2).
I am running an extreme as the main router then I have a number of expresses to extend round a large building, but it is the guest that needs extending!!
Any help would be much appreciated!

You need to have the "new" AirPort Express to be able to extend the Guest Network. The "new" Express looks like a miniature AirPort Extreme.
Check the Model No on the side of the AirPort Express devices that you have. If you see A1264 this is an older version of the Express that does not have Guest Network capabiltiy.
Using an AirPort Extreme and new AirPort Express here., the Guest Network "extends" just fine when I try this using wireless only. I also have another AirPort connected back to the main AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection. The Guest Network is extended on this device as well.

Having trouble with Airport Base Station

I am having a problem with getting a base station configured correctly. I am new with working on Apple networks. Currently, there is a communication problem between one of the base stations and the network. I cannot get an Internet connection. One question that I have is if I reset the base station, does it automaticallly go to a default IP address? I keep seeing a 10.0.1.1 address, but I believe that this address is assigned to another base station that is on another floor of the building.
I have gone into the airport setup manager and have tried to set up the base station from there without having success. Do you have any suggestions on how I can set up this base station to get Internet connection?
I see another base station listed on the server that I did not see before, but I'm not sure if this is the correct base station since it has a different IP address. I'd appreciate any help you could provide on this issue.

Yes, if you perform a reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), it will default to 10.0.1.1.

Try connecting directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the AEBS you want to setup.

To set up multiple base stations, you will want to use the AirPort Management Utility, which is part of AirPort Management Tools. But, more importantly, what is the desired network that you are trying to achieve? You can connect additional AEBSs to extend the range of a wireless network, either wirelessly or via Ethernet. When done wirelessly, this is known as Wireless Distribution System (WDS); as wired, it called Roaming.
It sounds like your building has a wired network and that your are using AEBSs at multiple locations throughout the building, but all connected to the building's Ethernet network...correct? This would be a roaming configuration. If this is true, then:
- Each AEBS would have it's LAN port connected to the building's Ethernet ports on the same subnet.
- Each AEBS would have a unique Base Station Name.
- All AEBSs would have the same Network Name and Password.
- Each of the AEBSs would be set up as bridges

Designing a network with 6 base stations and an Access control lists

I have 6 airport extreme (802.11n) base stations setup in my studio.
I'm a little concerned about security as they're all setup individually (wireless mode: Create a wireless network) with the same Network names (mystudio) and WPA/WPA2 personal password so my roaming users don't have to keep entering passwords / experience dropouts etc
i have lots of freelancers who are in and out of the studio and there isn't anyway for me to monitor who is currently connected to my wifi network.
i'd like to setup a wireless network that only allows you to connect to the WIFI network only if your MAC address is on the access control list.
is this possible with Apple Airport extreme base stations or would it be a better idea for me to invest in a 3rd party product?
all the base station are connected to an Ethernet point and have static IP's assigned to them.
whats the best way to deploy such a solution;should i keep the setting as they are and manually enter the mac address for 30 portable machines on each base station or is there a more pragmatic solution...
any help / input would be much appreciated.

When employing Access Control in a roaming network configuration, the MAC addresses would be required to be entered atr each of the base stations ... as there is no means (unfortunately) to have them "automatically" migrate amongst them.
However, one important thing to note. Only wireless security, using WPA or WPA2, will actually secure the wireless network. MAC addresses can easily be spoofed. Someone, determined to do so, can still access your network ... even if secured by Access Control.

Losing Connection with Airport Base Station

This issue popped up a few months ago but I've not been able to devote any time to find a work-around or a solution because I've just been too busy.
My iBook G4 consistently loses connection to my Airport Extreme and Airport Snow Base Stations. The Extreme is at home and the Snow is at work. This happens during any period of inactivity or if it has gone to sleep and I wake it up. All I get is a spinning beach ball and the only way to get reconnected is to do a restart. This happens both at home and at work.
I am currently running 10.4.3 and my Airport software is all up-to-date. Some time ago, I read somewhere that this situation was somehow related to those with 1G modules in their RAM slot but can't seem to locate that info any more. I have 1G of RAM total with 512 in my RAM slot.
Any help appreciated on this. I've reached my breaking point with the constant restarts.

Airport admin utility with Hawking base station?

Hello;
I just bought an iMac with OS 10.4.2. Previously I was using a Hawking router with wireless, but I connected it to my old laptop by ethernet. Now I would like to use wireless. It works fine, except I would like to set-up the Hawking base station with security. Admin utility does not see the Hawking. Can this be done without buying an airport express or extreme? (I have checked the discussions but it seems no one has tried this. I have also looked at the Hawking websites but there are no patches that I can find)

Thanks guys for the quick response. However, (perhaps I'm an idiot) but the only thing that happened when I punched in the IP address you gave me into the browser was "could not find the server". No utility opened. I tried it in both Safari and Firefox to the same affect. Am I doing that right?
